Volks Super Dollfie Midi Discussion part 1

I just saw some scans from what I assume is the latest Volks News and oh my god this precious new baby boy Oliver is sooo cute!

 

Hello! Got myself a Hina SDM. And I am wondering if a regular 1/4 MSD clothes would fit her. I want to buy something from Alice's Collection and I can't tell if the clothes ft since VOLKS never released official measurements for this doll size. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

 

It will fit! SDM is the same measurements as MSD! IIRC the only difference is the jointing of the torso and elbows

 

Thanks so much! I couldn't find any measurements in the internet so I couldn't buy anything since I can't cross reference. Granted, I have the doll, I don't know how to accurately measure (and I don't have any measuring tape).

 

Anyone else see the announcement about a CM lottery on Volks USA?

 

Yes; very interesting! I wonder how many they'll offer for lottery. I also wonder if it's in lieu of having Online FCS for June.

 

They've got some nice sculpts in the Volks USA CM lottery. I think the only one they've offered in North America before has been F-48?

 

Does anyone know when lottery results will be announced for the SDM coordinate models? I entered for an SDM f_50! So cute, but now I’m a little anxious :0

I hate Volks. Even though my SDM is my most expensive BJD ever, it is the worst in every way. Firstly, I got pure skin ever beauty which is supposed to be much slower at yellowing and paid more than double price just to get this. Turns out, this doll is yellowing CRAZY FAST and drastically even though I never ever put it in sunlight or fluorescent lighting and my room has blackout curtains. Secondly, it is insanely floppy no matter how tight I string it or even if I use an extra thick cord. Even with sueding it has no stability at all. The joint separation around the hip is stupid as well, it is always popping out randomly and is so useless anyways. The only thing I like about the doll is the face sculpt. Even for stuff like eyes and wigs, I am insanely disappointed with Volks. Standard long wig was more than double price of typical BJD wigs, yet it was extremely bulky and mushroom-like. The eyes are just bad. The clothes are extremely simple/plain and a lot of the newer designs in the past few years don't look good. I also remember how they wouldn't let non-Japanese residents order FCS in their stores even if they travel all the way. Not to mention all sorts of issues and drama people have had with Volks.

Hi! I use 16mm eyes in my Byakuren. I believe they're Volks glass eyes...

Larger-eyed SDMs seem to be able to handle 16mm or 18mm eyes in my experience. Whichever one you use really falls to personal preference- and it's never a bad thing to have some back-up eyes in both sizes! For SDM Byakuren specifically, I've used both sizes as well. I personally like 18mms because they give her an "old-school" look (the sculpt is, after all) but I received mine with 16mms on arrival. Coordinate model Byakurens seem to come with 16mm in general.

Both pairs are Volks HG Glass eyes I believe. Someday she's going to get 18mm zoukeimura eyes when I get extras.

I recently redressed my CM 61 boy in his CM outfit since it's very wintery themed! I really like 61, it reminds me a lot of Noa, which is another sculpt I have and love. He's so so cute, though the wig definitely is not the greatest aha

 

Sorry to hear about this. If what you described is true, it sounds like a quality issue? Maybe you can reach out to the proxy who helped you with the doll and see if they can have your doll sent back to Volks for inspection?

 

I did not buy from a proxy. Sadly it is not a unique quality issue. It is a known problem among owners, there are many tweets about it on Japanese Twitter.

 

@SuperShawol : He is so cute!!! I don't think I've looked closely at F-61 before, but I really love his mouth sculpt. His CM outfit is very cute too, I love his little stego bag

I also updated one of my MSD dolls on a Midi body~ She is an old fairy F-21 head. She has a very cute :3 face hehe

Interesting...This is the first time I heard about it. I wonder if anyone else here encountered the same issue. If you bought from Volks directly I'm sure you can reach out too, especially the stringing issue they probably can fix and check if the parts are ok and if it's defected causing the flopping you mentioned. (I had an FCS before that had a wrong leg part so the doll couldn't stand properly and Volks replaced the leg and reassembled the body for me.)
The wig problem depends on the style you pick probably but I also have their FCS wig before and they look beautiful, sorry to hear about yours.
Japan FCS order is never opened to people who does not have address in Japan, because they are not shipping it outside of Japan so it's like a specialty for people living there

 

No it is not about joints or restringing, it is the resin and you can look up EB 黄変 if you have never heard about it.

 

EB 黄変 is yellowing in English. All resin yellows. Early Volks dolls yellowed more quickly, but the modern ones are much more stable. The skin tone has changed some over the years, but on the whole, Volks' resin is much more reliable that some other doll companies out there.

 

The size really depends on the shape of the eyewall. Most of my MSD/SDM sized dolls use 16 mm, but some have 18 mm, which helps with a younger look, or a more anime style. Here is my SDM Tenshi Mamu with 18mm eyes.

There’s a special resin mix called Ever Beauty that’s more expensive than Pure Skin but supposedly more resistant to yellowing. Apparently not everyone thinks so.

 

I've also heard this problem about Ever Beauty particularly the WS. I'm sorry about your experience maiyufi and how it has put you off of Volks dolls. It seems like this gimmick may have been more experimental than they let on.

 

If you are a GL member, Volks’ website has a preview of SDM Saki, Coco, and Chiyo. There are 10th anniversary editions releasing at the April Dolpa, and regular editions releasing afterwards in Japan at least - maybe Volks USA will get them too?

The limited edition of SDM Saki, Coco, and Chiyo are all in white skin and the regular release will be normal skin.

I like Chiyo limited wig, but not quite interest in all of those 3 sculpts. They don't look distinctively different from each other like what Momo, Hina, Noa impressed me

 

These girls make such adorable SDM's! Saki is a must have though Chiyo and Coco are also very tempting. So glad the NS versions will be standards!

At first I thought they looked rather same-y, but looking at the small pic of the standard versions, I think that is mostly because the LE's are all styled very similarly with the same general tones and color scheme. The standards look more like themselves, if that makes any sense.

 

I absolutely adore them, to me all three are must haves happy they're standards as well, and that the standards are made up just as cutely as the LEs! trying to work on doll wardrobes before growing the family, so it's great not to feel rushed

 

Is there any indication that the new releases would be purchasable from the Volks USA website at some point? I'm not sure how releases like this work. I'd love to own a Saki, she's really cute.

If you are looking for the more durable choice. I use blue fairy shoes for my Volks mini girl. For more affordable choice, check either some maker in taobao that list their shoes as Volks sdm size or second hand in mandarake or dollyteria.

I thought I was immune to "very cutesy" like dolls, but no...I have been Volks'ed! He's a F-48 coordinate-model boy.

 

She's still fairly new-- I'm personally waiting for her sculpt to be added to FCS so I can get her in sunlight skin with order makeup. I'd recommend searching "sdm ここ" on twitter to get owner photos, though this brings up non-doll-related posts as well (but no one seems to use the actual hashtag for her...) Instagram is more difficult because Volks has always used #sd_sculptname regardless of doll size, so obviously #sd_coco brings up big Coco.

Recently I got SDM-48 FCS. He is adorable. I selected the new AM makeup. The new AM makeup is really cute
