Volks NYC Dolpa, June 19-20th, 2010.

Nov 15, 2009

    1. There were Japanese vender Yo outfits, but they sold out quickly (I was the 23rd person through the door and quite a few were gone already by the time I got to them). The ones they had left were so cute though!

    2. I see! Thanks everyone for the info! If I ever manage next year, I'll go to the next nyc dolpa since it's a borough away from me. XD

    3. Inmylove: When I got in to Dolpa on Sunday most of the YoSD outfits left on the table were Kimonos. They were on the pricier side the one I got was $99 for Waloli style one. I can post a photo later. i think the other styles which were more full length but less puffy were $65 (not too sure on this number) There were more yo outfits than msd outfits on the table most of the outfits were SD

    4. If anyone here won one of the white SD beds during the general lottery, could you please take pictures? I'm curious to see what it looks like.

    5. If you can wait a month, I'll be assembling the bed once I move on August 2.

    6. Sure, there's no rush! Thank you very much~ I'm just curious to see what it looks like.

    7. I put mine together this past weekend (had to mail it to myself from NYC so my luggage wouldn't be overweight!) and have a photo that sorta shows it here~

The only full shots I have of it are on my phone, and not uploaded anywhere right now. I'll probably be taking more pics soon, though! :)

    8. In CA we get hit with sales tax from Volks so in CA we end up paying a bit more for dolls as well. It is just one of those things I guess. What is the sales tax in NY? Where I am it is almost 10%. I am dying to put in for Little Alice but I need to raise funds first.
I am still waiting for Chika's outfit to be released at Volks USA, I should add put up for lottery not released. I won Chika but she unfortunately does not come with her adorable outfit.

    9. It's so cute! :whee: Now I can't wait for a color scheme other than Baby's Room.

    10. That scheme kinda works for my naughty little rosy-cheeked twins, but yeah, I've got to make some fluffier bedding for it with different material so it can be more multi-purpose! :XD:

      And Tsukidoll - I believe it's 8.875% within NYC. ^^

    11. Did they just have Yo size outfits from the Japanese vendors on Sunday?

    12. Nope. They had a stuff in every size. I even got a nice Maxi-Dress by a Japanese maker for my SD16 girls and a cute princessy dress for one of my yos.

    13. Thank you so much, thesaraghina! I don't care much for the bedding, but the bed itself is very cute! ♥ I'm sure it will be even better with new bedding~ (And I still want to see more pictures, if anyone else has any!) I wonder if Volks will sell this bed?

    14. The bedding is cute (matching pillow, futon, & sheet) but yeah, it's very minimal. :sweat

As for if it'll be sold, I think it's actually leftover from last year. The sticker on the box shows that it was part of their 10th anniversary items. Probably something they only sold in stores? I never saw it on the US or international sites. >_<

    15. Ah, that would make sense. I could definitely see them having leftover stock of it. I really like it, though. It's more daybed/loft-y than I first thought. I did see one, but I thought at first glance it was a crib.

    16. OMG Your twins are so adorable!!! :3 And thanks for the pic of the bed. I was kinda curious about it, too. ^_^

    17. I don't know if this is news to anyone, or if I should even put this here... but I just saw Volks put up a web lottery for the dolls they sold at the party this year! I didn't get to get one there but I might try with this.

      http://volksusa.com/dolls-party-in-new-york-city-4-2010-web-lottery.html

Like I said I'm sure everyone already knows or it shouldn't go here, but I thought it was worth mentioning if someone didn't get a doll this time and wanted one. The lottery starts July 10 and ends July 25.

    18. I am about 80% sure there will maybe be one at the end of the year, its Volks USA's anniversary, 5th or 6th. ;)

    19. I don't know- all they've done is like three years of web events and one make-up class.

    20. It's been mentioned before, but it's definitely worth a 2nd mention! ;)

I just noticed that the lottery entry isn't until the 2nd half of July, basically. Hmmm...I think that gives me enough time to scrape together enough for a White Rabbit...or maybe Lorina....? Gah! Decisions are hard!

    21. Silliness- That grey arm around the girl Reisner in the background belongs to my Genji, Kai. So technically, there's three in that picture n.n

    22. Yesss! [IMG] The elusive Third Man! That was the third Genji at our table on Sunday. I was hoping somebody had got a pic of the whole trio at the same time. Did you happen to catch one?

(You were the one who wore that excellent corset on Sunday, right?)

    23. I am so hoping they do an LA Dolpa so I at least have a prayer to go. I am already going to Hawaii and the hubby was not willing to give up Hawaii for my "stupid doll party" no he does get it. Thanks for the link :)

I wanted to add Jenny your guy is just so hunky.

    24. well that's interesting, I wonder why they told me I couldn't get a swd boy on Sunday, that they were sold out (?) That's kinda confusing. :?:?

    25. I've got a question....

If you used credit cards for your Dolpa4 weekend purchases....have they posted to your accounts?
      .

    26. You know, I'm glad you asked Angelguardian! I saw my purchases posted to my account when I first got back from Dolpa that Monday, but now I don't see those charges. I'm kind of worried...

    27. Nope, not posted yet. I thought it was a bit strange, but I am still waiting for other non-Dolpa purchases to post as well, so I am not too worried yet.

    28. I had contacted my credit card companies and all is okay on my end. Those amounts are still pending. I used 2 cards on the 2 days and the same is happening for both. Wondered if it was happening to others.

According to my cc....the funds have not been transmitted to Volks....said it can take 10 business days....but everything else for my trip is there and the charges since Dolpa4.

I called Volks Monday and sent an email today....hope there is not a mess.
      .

    29. Hi Sher, I thought I read on the NYD4 Volks usa, that #1 first opportunity was pre-order, #2, second was they would bring extra limited to the event, (where we had to stand in line in the hot sun ouside the building for hours to get a ticket to buy one or the clothing limiteds) and #, "if there were any left" they would be on Volks USA.

I was in at the purchase table on Sunday where my understanding was that they were sold out.

meanwhile, I was not there all day on Sunday. Was there any mention by the Volks staff or FDQ about there being a NYD5?

FIT seemed to be not so welcoming on Sunday. we could not get into the building until 10:30 AM and then, could only enter in groups of 10 at one time, led by one of the Volks staff. almost 2 and 1/2 hours standing in the hot NY sun, and I wasn't about to sit on the sidewalk. The building was open, but were not allowed inside until 10:30. people before me in line said that FIT considered us a fire hazard and would not allow us to be in the hallways inside the building. (second hand, but were were only allowed into the building in groups of 10 each time.)

    30. you might be right, I just thought if they were going to offer a lottery, at least for those of us THERE on sunday, maybe they'd say something like "we're sold out of the dolls we BROUGHT but you can still sign up for one". but I might be making that up. Total wishful thinking. LOL.

I didn't get there sunday until later when the doors were already open. I did hear people got caught in the rain and then had to stand outside. there were less people there on sunday than saturday; on saturday they let us in and we all sat in that hallway. they complained about where we were sitting a lot, which is understandable, they are just trying to do their job, but at least they let us IN. I don't know why they'd quote fire code issues on sunday when there were less people there than on saturday; doesn't make sense, does it?

There was no mention of a NY dolpa 5. I have a feeling this might have been it. :(:(:(

    31. Hi Sher,

there was a mention of a NY Dolpa 5 (dolpa 4 and 5), at the end of NY3, so I'm hoping for next year. although that was 2 years ago. Maybe this will depend on if they can get the room at FIT. I can't see why FIT didn't put up velvet ropes, like movie lines, bank lines, etc. to keep people waiting in single lines. might have also made it more difficult to for a group of 4 or 5 to cut in ahead of others in line. - Barb

    32. I think they might be counting the canceled one, and if so, this would have been 5. Usually at the end they say numerous times see you next year, see you next time! and they didn't this time, hence my assumption.

I certainly hope I am wrong! I would be SO HAPPY to be wrong!!

    33. maybe if we sent lots of Birthday Cards next fall, and mention politely what a great time it was in NY. meanwhile Sher, you and I will get out our lace needles and cobweb yarn to prepare for next time in NY!

    34. The security guard told us they would not be allowing people to stand in the hall at all because they wouldn't stand against one side of the hall on Saturday. Because they were blocking the exits and the flow of traffic of the hall it was a fire code violation. In order to prevent it they made us wait outside as a lesson for not listening the day before.

    35. It wasn't at all the case that the crowd was "not listening"..... It's that the line was too long for the hallway to contain, and they wouldn't let us continue the line on the other side of the door at first, because they didn't want to have the door open. So, they told us to make the line wrap around onto the other side of the hallway, which is what happened.

Later on, they changed their minds, and then opened the door to let the line continue on the other side of the door-- whereupon everybody followed instructions immediately. The basic situation was they didn't want us to do what we were doing, but they had no idea what they did want us to do.

Not terribly smoothly handled, really. But eventually everybody got inside, and that solved the problem.

    36. I just remember the security being very angry and flustered that they couldn't clear the hall way and that people wouldn't stand to one side or the other. That they were making very big circles and taking up whole secitons.....

either way I'm sure they'll think of something different or better to do next year

    37. Barb - You were there on Sunday at 8am!!! And they didn't even let you into the building? :doh It rained just as I got off the subway about 10:40 - hope no one or doll got wet...(I brought my umbrella)...
What was the sumika like at opening? Was there an Opera Cat outfit for sale? By the time I got in there, the tables had been pretty picked over. Noticed a kimono for $550 though....and there wasn't even a picture on the package showing what it would look like on a bjd....:o
      Alex

    38. For the new web event the prices are less than what was charged at Dolpa. White Rabbit was 503.00 at the event and is now listed for 462.00. $41.00 is a huge difference! What's up with that? :?

Edit: I think its NY sales tax, maybe?

    39. yes, it is the NY city/state sales tax.

    40. Alex, yes. I took care of my son's insulin and left my two at the hotel. was very hot standing there, I was in the third group of 10 let in, and there wasn't much. saw one boys kimono dfd for 220 or 240, phoenix pattern but for what I spend Saturday night, I decided not to. sorry you got caught int he rain, it was really hot waiting and close to hitting the sidewalk. I met a small group of like minded people and that helped the time go by.

    41. I was there both days before the opening. On Saturday we got there at about noon and the line was down the hallway to the first set of double doors. We started the wrap process, but after about ten minutes it was obvious that the hallway was too narrow for that, plus as more people arrived the wrap would end up with nowhere to go... so I asked a security guard if we could just continue the line down the hall and open the doors, which he did. The problem was that it was a rather narrow hall and people were meeting and greeting, getting the dolls out, and parking their roller luggage. This created little circles of people on down the hallway, making it hard for people to walk through. Plus, some of the side doors were blocked with people sitting and with doll stuff. This upset at least one staff (FIT) member I saw, who needed the side door opened. The security repeatedly went down the hall asking people to stand to one side, but that wouldn't last long.

When we arrived on Sunday at 8 AM, there was about 6 people gathered out front. They sent us to the back, assuming we were Volks staff, and then Bailey came out and brought the people back to the front the place and talked with Security. They were told of the problems from the day before and said the line had to be outside, and when they let people in, it could only be 10 at a time. This was what security decided, not Volks.

The line grew throughout the morning, and by the time 10 o'clock arrived, there were a good forty to fifty people in line. The Volks staff came out and handed out tickets for the limited stuff. Then, at 10:30, they came back out and took the first ten of us inside. I guess at that point, or shortly thereafter, it started to rain. The line moved to be a 'U' shaped underneath the building. I know because I came back out 20 minutes later and the rain had stopped but the line had moved.

    42. I heard some scuttlebutt that Dolpa may not be at FIT next year. This makes sense, as it seems (from the 'enrollment lottery' kerfuffle) that the event has outgrown the space. The recounts of FIT security's seeming lack of understanding of how a crowd this size should best be handled, it sounds more like this is the case.

I don't recall the exact convo, so I can't say whether they're actually shopping for a larger event space for NYC Dolpa 5, but that was my understanding of what I heard...though it's officially just gossip, so who's to say what's actually happening.

I do know that I'm hoping for a Dolpa next year, though.

crosses fingers & claps because he believes in faeries

    43. '

this was also the rumor 2 years ago after NYD3, it might be very difficult to find an affordable space in NYC, but who knows.

    44. Yay, keep hoping for those larger venues! :eusa_pray: Would be nice, if they can get one.

Methinks FIT may want to reexamine their Large Events Lineup procedures, because they didn't quite seem prepared to cope with a waiting-line of that size.... But our line was only as big as the capacity of that room, so chances are this will happen with some other sold-out event! What'll they do next time an event sells out & brings 350 people in? Perhaps we provided them with a learning experience.

    45. OMG! I really do hope you are wrong...I was so looking forward to going next year :(

    46. I have never never ever been mistaken for an economist, but wouldn't the cost of larger event space potentially be offset by the additional ticket sales, & maybe a few additional one-offs? Or... it could be an opportunity for Volks to rent "vendor space" to a few companies who sell clothes, wigs, eyes, etc. As gorgeous as the clothes are that were for sale at Dolpa, most of them just didn't fit the aesthetic I have in mind for any of my (potential) dolls; more vendors could also mean more variety in terms of styles of "stuff" that is available, no?

Like I said, I'm no economist, but I think that would work, no?

    47. Move to LA or Chicago, can? Or maybe even a state without any sales tax. ;)

      ... I didn't think so either.

    48. Seconded for Chicagoooooooooooooooooo! But yeah, probably so not happening.

    49. I have nothing but guesses and possibly not realistic. Volks has small events that have entry by lottery in Japan, and then the very large Dolpas. They may want to keep this small, and their expense in traveling from Japan to the east coast must be up there. I think I remember once that they hoped to bring Japanese Vendor to a LA event but it may have been too costly for the vendors.

I doubt that Volks would want other vendors in NY at a Volks event, selling wigs, eyes, etc. that are not made by Volks or by Japanese designer ouftit brought in by Volks.

    50. I would be a VERY HAPPY CAMPER about a Chicago Dolpa~ ♥

    51. Ah yes...other considerations that I didn't think about. Hmmm...still, I hope they find a way to keep having Dolpa NYC.

    52. So am I wasting my time saving up for another Dolpa that might not happen??? I tred for 2009 Dolpa, but my friend canceled...then Volks Canceled...Now there might not be one at all??? I can't go to LA, that would cost at least Double!

    53. I guess it is your choice if you choose to feel this way. I'm being positive about next year, but things do happen. there is no guarantee that one will be in NY, and if so. there is no guarantee that everyone that wants to will get in. such is life, things happen or sometimes they don't.

    54. I am still hoping though. I mean, I got a sign about it, I like to think. Just hope they can find somewhere bigger or something...

    55. I really wished they had a store in NYC. It'll really pick up momentum with not only doll collectors but other fandoms.

    56. I am so envious! I have a SD16 girl on the way and would have loved to shop for her.

    57. If they have a Dolpa in LA....I will go there ~ whichever happens first!!!

    58. At the one and only LA Dolpa they had a vendor area with maybe 10-12 spaces. Display dolls all had to be Volks but there was no rule about what sizes and types of clothing etc. could be sold. Obviously people asking about doll fit kept their voices low when asking "Will this fit my Delf boy?". The Volks staff was quite curious about our stuff (I was there as part of orangebabydolly) and took pictures of our table but they didn't otherwise monitor the goings on. The down side is that people acting as vendors had to be there at 6:30 AM and they could not line up to go shopping with all the other attendees. I was sent to the line so I could shop for our group!

All in all it was a good event, I have to wonder if an LA Dolpa will really ever take off and be a big thing - it's hard to get people to take time off and travel etc. right before Thanksgiving. I have set aside time off from work this November (dates to coincide with the fifth anniversary of the LA Sumika opening) just in case!

    59. I sooooooo wish this too!!!!
