Volks NYC Dolpa 4, July 25 and 26th 2009 -updated, postponed.- FDQ Shizu

Feb 21, 2009

    1. Volks doesn't offer faceup services during Dolpa, not even small touch ups. A few DoA members might though.

Here's the link to last year's workshops. The only bodies offered through the workshops are the SD13 boy and SD girl. The bodies are still cheaper if you can get one secondhand, but the heads are a good price IMO.

    2. You're going, DiSpy? I'm excited to meet you!^^

If you take the faceup workshop class, you can probably use your new skills and faceup supplies to redo the one on your doll when you get home =)

    3. DiSpy, if you don't like any of the School Heads that are offered this time around you can use the head for the doll you want repainted. Just be sure to have it cleaned and coated first. ;) If you do a faceup you like during class they'll coat it for you afterward. :)

    4. Ooooh... thanks for the tips you guys. :)

You'll be in town then Bell? That'll be neat!

      I can't wait to go...

    5. Will they have School D head available this time?

    6. We won't know for sure until they announce it. :( But I'm really hoping they do. ^_^

    7. We don't know yet. Last year, they had School Head B and School Head C... And the year before that it was School Head A and SwD A.

    8. We don't know yet....just hoping they will. Once they announce the event....we'll find out for sure. Hope wishing makes it so....LOL.
      .

    9. I keep hoping they will post the date, I've been seeing some really good deals on air fare for mid-July and wish I could book one of them.

I also really like school head D, what a looker ;)

    10. I notice Volks does not like to overlap events ... I think news will be posted after the current dolpa. :)

    11. I've been stalking the site waiting for them to post dates. I actually took at look at when they posted the dates for last year's Dolpa, and they were posted April 5th. I have a feeling we'll be waiting until towards the end of March. >.< I would love it if they posted them sooner, though.

    12. Did anyone get FCS last year that remembers whether they charged tax? I'm trying to figure out how much to save for an SD13 girl. Creating Dreams says at LA sumika they charge $900 plus tax. And is the shipping pretty similar to what they charge on the limiteds?

    13. I'm pretty sure that they didn't charge tax. (I still have my sales receipt from then. >_<)
      MSD FCS $484 USD
FCS Fresh-up Service (seam lines, coating) $72 USD
      Shipping & Handling $14.13 USD
      Total charged $570.13

      Hope that helps. ^_^

    14. I don't know, I'd plan on tax. NYS doesn't take kindly to tax not being collectd at at New York Point of Sale... If not, then you have extra on the day.

    15. I think they only charge tax when they sell in California. They didn't charge me NY taxes on my purchases last year.

    16. For FCS they charged sales tax for NY state residents. No tax for out of state residents they ship to.

They will charge sales tax on items you buy and take home.

    17. I've never been to a US Dolpa, but I know one of the big things about Dolpas here is that you are not charged tax for the items purchased. I think that includes FCS orders done during Dolpa. Of course, I've yet to do a Dolpa FCS ^^;

    18. I've never seen Volks take FCS orders at a Japanese Dolpa. ^^;;; I think that is US only offering. ^^;;; It would be a bit unwieldy since attendance at a Japanese event is so much higher.

It makes sense, in Japan it is much easier to get to a Sumika to place an order, while if you are in the US there is just the one Sumika in LA.

    19. I know last year they only charged sales tax on FCS being shipped to NY and no tax elsewhere.

But NY is now pretty strict with tax and even require internet places to charge tax so it's safer to plan for the tax. If they don't charge tax then surplus for you if they do and you don't plan for it, then it's going to be tight for you.

    20. RE: Me too. With all due respect, we need plenty of notice here in the U.S. I'm sure that in Japan, it's easy for people to plan travel arrangements within a couple of months because they rely on public transportation on a daily basis, and they manage to obtain reasonable airfares to get from point A to point B. Unfortunately for us here in the U.S., public transportation for most of us is a little hard to come by, not to mention that airfare prices rise if you wait too long to purchase a ticket. :(

So, you said that last year they announced a date in the beginning of April? Wow! I'll keep that in mind. I basically gave myself a time period that I wouldn't wait any longer than late April, and that if they didn't make any announcements in terms of a convention date by then that I would bow out. Hopefully, the date will be up before that time period, and that I'll be able to get an airline ticket at a reasonable price. *crosses fingers*

    21. Woo! Planning on attending this year! Can't wait!

    22. crpsaiyan- Agreed, agreed, agreed. It's amazing how much a plane ticket can rise to if you wait to late to purchase it. Even a month in advance may be too late to get a great deal, as I have unfortunately had to find out. :(

Maybe by the fifth Dolpa, they'd start releasing information very early? One can only hope.

    23. I was worried about the plane ticket, but we've decided to take the ferry from Nova Scotia to Maine, then a train to NY which is much cheaper when coming from Canada! I hope they announce dates soon though, I'm nervous about getting a hotel room!

    24. Actually, I suspect there will not be too many announcements until the GW Dolpa is finished since the event isn't until July this year and last year it was in June. ^^;

      And while Japan does have really good public transportation and trains run more frequently and there are not time changes, fares around Japan can be extremely expensive. ^^;

If say PurgatoriX wanted to get from where she lived near Kyoto to Tokyo it would cost her around $300 round trip and take 3 hours or so each way. My mother is looking into going to SF from NY at the end of March right now and the flights she is pricing are around $375... so...

Plane fares within Japan can be very expensive unless booked 45 days in advance.

Driving can also be very expensive in Japan unless you take only smaller roads as expressways have very very high tolls.

    25. Latest I heard from Pat is NYC Dolpa 4 will now probably be LATE in July.

      :)
      .

    26. Well late July is definatly the best for me. My fmaily always has our reunion at the beginning of th emonth and I'd hate to miss it. Though I'd defiantly choose Dolpa over the reunion. XD

    27. Well late July could run into Comicon and I already have my tickets for that. It would be a hard choice.

      Ephemeralice

    28. Well, I'm not only concerned about the cost of getting to/from Dolpa.. It's being able to request the time off work early enough to actually get it (I have days off I can take, its just a matter of actually getting them approved that's the problem if I wait too long), as well as booking a hotel while they still have deals that would cut the expense by quite a bit..

After looking at FDQ's schedule, I'm wondering if it'll be the weekend of July 25th...

    29. That is the only weekend they don't have any other event listed for. That would be a problem for the people wanting to go to Comic-Con though...

    30. I dont need a lot of notice as I live in Washington DC. I am excited to go, so any other cons that may coexist in July, I will still go to Dolpa.

I imagine that hobbyists who live far away would like to know soon. Yet, Volks seems to have historically given us plenty of time to make travel arrangements ahead of time.

I would say that public transportation to NY is fairly reasonable and plentiful. Unless you are really busy in July, you can always make choices between a fav conference and the US Dolpa.

      ~Gus

    31. I won't be able to go if it's during ComicCon since my husband and I are vendors. After paying that much for a booth, I can't imagine dropping it for Dolpa.

    32. Late July ><! I am moving from Germany to the US in August...I hope I can fit Dolpa in.

    33. Oh I might be able to go to the Dolpa this year! I'm so excited, to have the possibility of going.

    34. If it is in late July, I don't think I would mind. Though, personally, I would like the 4th of July weekend, since I don't have to use my vacation time. All I can hope is that I can get an airline ticket at a good price. I'm so choosy when it comes to airline tickets these days. :p

    35. Late july in NYC will be hot hot hot, but I'm up for it. :)

    36. myah~! hopefully it's before or after the weekend of the 17th (x_x) I plan on going to otakon... lol my friends would be quite angry if I ditched them for a dolpa!! XD

    37. wickedstitchery: Late July in NY will be sweltering.

    38. There's 3 of us from our group of 5 ditching Otakon for Dolpa. >_< Whether it's the same weekend or not. $200-300 for the hotel room in Baltimore... Yeah, that's definitely going towards Dolpa. :sweat

I guess in that case, it doesn't really matter which weekend they pick. I just want to know. I'm impatient!

    39. ...and fatties like me don't do so well in the heat. As it is I am a heat stick in the Winter! :|
I'll just have to knock off the McD's and get started on that Wii FIT ASAP if I expect to survive. LOL

    40. I think I know what everyone's saying. I remember going to Otakon back in 2001. When I came back home to San Francisco, and when my friends asked me how my trip was, my response was, "a word of advice. If you ever plan to go on vacation to the East Coast, never go in August." *laughs* I remember when I walked from the Wyndham Hotel towards the Baltimore Convention Center, and just by walking a couple of blocks, I felt as though as I needed to go back to the room and take another shower. :p But yeah, I am prepared this time, should Dolpa take place in late July.

    41. Personally I would hope for 4th of July weekend since I think that ends up being a 3 day weekend at work.

    42. RE: *grins* Exactly! That way I can save up on my vacation time should that happen. But if it's late July, then so be it. *shrugs*

    43. LOL Not to mention that July 4th in NYC has got to be pretty spectacular :D

    44. Ooooo nooooo. July 4th weekend would be horrible for hotel costs, travel costs and heck, travel in and out of the city itself. On the Sunday of the first Dolpa I attended there was a parade/celebration going on a few streets over from FIT and ALL the traffic leaving the city from that event on Sunday night was a complete nightmare. Stop and go for hours and miles. Thank goodness I had all the dolly joy to make it worth while, but I would never wish traffic like that on my worst enemy. Well...maybe them. LOL But seriously, it was bad. I guess for the folks traveling via train or plane it would be good.

    45. I hope it's NOT July 4th. I always spend that holiday with friends/family, and so that would be an immediate no-go for me. =/

    46. I agree with July 4th being a bad weekend... I like their original mention of it being mid-july :)

    47. I know! I need a sunlight body for my tan MD Miho head. I wish they would sell a sunlight SD17 body... :(

    48. I just want sato options period. I'd love to make my first FCS order in person at an event rather than through someone online. *wiggles*

    49. OOooo I think I may have gotten the new job I interviewed for last week and if so...I may just have to do a FCS for that F38 dream boat...I mean...boy. :D

    50. Lucky!! I'm hoping a paying job comes through in time for me to do the same. :...(

    51. I will be doing my first ever FCS at the dolpa! I am sooo excited! I hope everyone is able to get their FCS dollies too ^_^
If they offer Sato options I will be beyond thrilled, if not that is ok because I already know exactly what I will be getting. I have her options picked out for if they have sato options or just normal options. I think I might be going a bit overboard on my FCS planing...I even have the eyelashes picked out...

    52. Ohhh, I know if they did Sato FCS I might just have to order 2: that MSD f-20 sunlight boy I've been pining for forever and either a sunlight f-16 or a sunlight f-40. D:

    53. KeiCai_Ayan: If they were offering Sato only MSD FCS heads then I would be making plans to order. Right now any of the heads I'm interested in is Sato only.

NabeeRain: I don't think there is such a thing as overplanning an FCS. I plan mine for months and plan out everything down to blushing of ears and under the chin. Also other minute shadows and shading. The parts choosing themselves down to the lashes take no time at all but the faceup I can spend months on. I consider FCS planning great to start bonding with a doll before it even arrives.
I'm excited for you, first time FCS is an awesome experience especially if you are prepared.

    54. Thank you AreeElf! I am super excited too. :fangirl: The mold I want is standard, the only sato option I would use is the sunlight skin. I have the feet, legs, hands, torso, head (of course), and lashes picked out. As for the face up, I actually am bringing pictures to help show what I would like. The face ups are essentially the same, but different color schemes depending on the skin tone (which will either be white or sunlight). I also have the wig and eyes picked out too depending on the skin tone. I am so obsessed lol!
I hope they have sato options so you can get the dollies you want too! :D

This might seem like a silly question, but can we order the homecoming outfits for FCS at the dolpa too? I really love to get one for my girl ^_^

    55. NabeeRain: Yes you can order the fcs omukae outifts at dolpa too but only one of each option. I ordered both the girl and boy one last year. Sounds like you have it covered. reference photos and idea of age of the doll really helps too. Ginarolo told me about the age as it helps them with the brow placement.

    56. If they are available I am going to beg my boyfriend for his credit card, LOL. I want a Sunlight F40 SD13 Girl soooooo bad, but the exchange rate is terrible for FCS right now and it would be so sentimental to get her at Dolpa.

    57. I didn't realize you could order more than one outfit total! If I did I would've gotten the SD boys version as well. I might have to do that this year if I can go.

    58. Maybe we should make a little petition to ask them to allow Sato FCS at this dolpa. There has never been Sato FCS at a US Volks event before, has there?

    59. I would be on board with this ^_^

    60. I'm fairly certain they've had it at least once before. I think AngelGuardian has a sunlight skin boy that she ordered during the NY Dolpa.
