Volks NYC Dolpa 4, July 25 and 26th 2009 -updated, postponed.- FDQ Shizu

Me neither! My best galfriend and I are planning on going! We're already talking about what type of One-Off possibilities we'd go CRAZY for.

Hm I am new what exactly happens at a Dolpa? Is it just for Volks dolls?

 

Last year, it was either the Volks Membership Card or a subscription to FDQ, but you did not need both to attend.

 

Okay, neat. So if I wanted my husband to tag along, he would also have to have a VolksUSA Membership Card? Obvious question but I must ask anyway!

 

You can buy a ticket for one guest, as well, so you can bring him along.

I had my husband (Mike on DOA) get himself a membership card just in case, but it wasn't necessary.

 

Do you recall how much the ticket cost?

Would it be cheaper for me to just get Chris a membership card next time I order from VolksUSA?



Also, if you purchase a ticket for a Guest, are they still eligible for the giveaways and whatnot?

 

Guests are eligible for giveaways but not for purchasing limited items with some exceptions such as the guest is your main source of income (Parent or Spouse, for example). I think Volks have been a bit more lenient on this though.

Ticket cost isn't too pricey. Around $40-50 if I remember correctly.

 

This is the first year I seriously thought I was going to get a chance to go, so I'd love to learn more about the application process.

 

Last year, tickets were $40 for you and then $40 for your guest - so it would be the same price regardless...

Previously, guests have been allowed to participate in the give-aways and entering for the one-offs. I believe you had to have a subscription to FDQ to enter for Irvin, as he was an FDQ exclusive. They didn't sell out of Irvin, so if I remember correctly, on Sunday, they opened up his sale to all attendees.

Another dumb question! You can do FCS at the Dolpas, right?

If so, is it just headmolds that are Sumika headmolds, or do they also allow you to do Sato headmolds as well?

 

OMG, Mid-July, I think I'm going to cry
July 11-17 is when UFDC (United Federation of Doll Clubs) holds their annual convention, and I'm already committed to going. I am truly bummed, had such a great time at Dolpa last year. I can't believe the folks at FDQ didn't check this out beforehand. So many doll collectors are also into BJD's and I know quite a few who were planning on going.

Ah, I've been waiting so impatiently for word about NY Dolpa this year! I can't wait to go! XD I already know which of my boys I want to bring, and am really looking forward to seeing friends again!

 

I'm actually pretty thrilled with the mid-july and advanced notice of a quasi-date info... this gives me a lot more time to plan... plus July is my birthday month, so it'll be great! XD

 

I'm bummed too. I'm already attending a doll convention that month in Washington DC. Even if the dates don't end up being the same I can't possibly attend both, I don't have the time or money. I was really hoping to go to the next NYC Dopla; I'd get to attend a fun convention plus visit my family & friends in NYC. Oh well......

 

Mid July is a terrible time for me as this year's Otakon is July 17-19. I really hope I'm not forced to choose between the two ;o;

That's the same thought I had too... I really wanted to go to this Dolpa since it'd be my first one and I hope I don't end up having to choose either (and I finally got a hotel connected to the Baltimore convention center too!)

 

I was hoping to make this my first Dolpa ( I really want a Kurumi) and my first trip to NYC but I am also committed to Otakon. So let us cross our fingers that they don't overlap.

 

Dolpas are intended for Volks SD owners and admirers. You need a Volks membership to attend and only Volks dolls are allowed to the event if you so choose to bring one. Usually at Dolpas there is a dinner or some similar kind of affair where guests are able to sit down with their dolls and other SD owners. Painting and maintenance workshops are also held at Dolpas for SD owners to attend and learn hands-on. There’s even a “Beauty Salon” where you can take your SD to the Volks staff “Doctors” to receive special services such as restringing and much more. Also at Dolpas, there are opportunities to do FCS orders, enter for One-Off Models, and buy limited items. Many of the Volks head staff come from Japan to attend the Dolpa, including the President, so it’s a pretty important event. And I heard it is a lot of fun. If you’re interested in attending I would definitely keep an eye out on the Volks USA website for more information and details of this year's Dolpa.

 

Oh, bad timing for me. I've got a week-long family reunion to help host in mid-late July this year.

 

I probably can't go to this Dolpa anyway, but San Diego Comic Con is July 23-26. And since I absolutely love it already, maybe the Con will help me to not feel bad about missing the Dolpa.

 

I'm hoping to go to this one! I went last year and I had such a great time.

Thanks so much nimbusdrake! It stinks everything is so close together. I would like to go to a doll con but they are making it hard to choose.

 

It's a lot more complicated than FDQ just didn't check the dates for other possible doll events. Volks typically chooses the dates, but the availability of the venue also enters into the decision-making process too. There are a lot of factors at work, including international travel for a dozen or so Volks staff and a national holiday at the beginning of the month, which would be even worse timing for a variety of reasons.

Don't be disheartened just yet. Nothing has been formally announced.

 

Yay, great to know, as I'll be off from school anyway. I hope they give us enough notice to not have to pay out the butt for last minute hotels!

I knew there was going to be an NYC Dolpa this year, but like everyone else I didn't know when. I am excited to hear confirmation of the event, but wish NYC wasn't so bloody HOT in July! Why can't they hold an NYC Dolpa in late September? LOL
Better start saving now for a one-off or limited.

I'm so glad it will be in July this year! I'm a little behind on saving up, so this gives me an extra month!! I'll just keep praying that it won't be really hot like last year.

Who knows? Maybe I'll win a gorgeous One-Off, or maybe even an adorable little Rei or Sei Tenshi!!! I'll never stop hoping!!!

 

I'm sort of glad it is July, I had been afraid it would be early June again this year and had resigned myself to not going since I have a wedding I can not miss then.

I'm also glad it's not late September. While I'm sure it was not something taken into account when planning the dates, late September/early October has the Jewish High Holidays.

One thing to note for all those people giving descriptions of what happens at a Dolpa. That is specifically what has happened at a US Dolpa, is anyone in this thread ever goes to a Japanese Dolpa they will find it is very different in many ways.

One can also gain the ability to attend the event if they're subscribed to FDQ Magazine since they are the co-sponsors with Volks.

And to continue with that theme, I think we all need to be extremely grateful to FDQ that it looks like we're having a live Dolpa in NY. I doubt without Pat and the magazine's hard work we would have the event.

I was worried that it'd be June, so July is great for extra saving up time.

Since we didn't have LA Dolpa last year, I feel like I shouldn't miss this NY Dolpa just in case we don't have one again. ><
Plus it'd be my first time in NY (well, the east coast in general).

So how hot does NY get anyway?

 

awww..... I'm not going to be able to go probably..... I don't get back till mid July, and Otakon is right in the middle of the month. If it fits in my schedule, who knows.....

 

I'm not 100% sure on that one actually. I know you needed a Volks membership number or be a guest of a member to actually get into the event. Once you got in, you had to be a subscriber to put in for the limited doll. Or at least that is how I remember it since there was a lot of chat about the specifics before hand.
I would say to be safe, get a Volks membership and make sure your subscription to FDQ is up to date if you plan to go for the limited doll when they release it.
It's all so exciting! Now we are sure to have something fun to look forward to and plenty of time to save up.

I am glad is in July I have start saving up some money for that and that is going to be my first DP .

 

Gah, I wish I knew whether there is going to be an LA Dolpa this year. It's much cheaper for me to get to LA than NY (more money for doll stuff!). But if they don't have one in LA, then of course I want to go the the NY one. What to do, what to do?

 

It was soooooo hot last year....and humid! I think I must have drank 40 gallons of McDonald's iced tea that weekend XD

 

Amen!!! FDQ really has been wonderful by putting their money, time, and effort into these events. Without them, we might never have experienced a Dolpa on the East Coast! We all owe them a big hug!!!

I agree, I'm sure that Pat and all the people who help from FDQ work very hard to secure the dates, the site and the product that is featured at the Dolpa on the East Coast. I'm sure tons of time goes in to the planning of an undertaking such as this! I have been to all of the NY Dolpa's in the past few years and Pat, FDQ and her helpers are to be commended for their tireless attention to this event. Thanks Pat and FDQ!

Oh no! I was really hoping it would be in early-mid June, I have a vacation planned and everything. >__< Now that its in July I won't be able to go... I was really looking forward to it, I just hope that there is an LA Dollpa this year so I still get to attend one.
