Volks Mini thread (MSD, SDC, Midi sized dolls)

He looks amazing!! He really wears the heck outta that outfit, it looks sooo good on him! And his face is one of my favourites!

 

I dressed up the other two volks doll in different outfits too, I didn't realize that F-10 would look great in skirts until today XD

 

They all look so cuuuute! And the skirt does look great! The outfit colours all complement each other, too, which is really cool.

 

I think my unnamed gretel is a water spirit, possibly a river. I’m open to name suggestions since I’ve just been calling her Water Spirit.

 

EEEEEEEE Just put an SDC Mina on layaway!!! I have May but now I'll have twins!!!!! I can't wait! I've wanted a second Mina/May/Mei for a long time now.

@Aiko-chan your Gretel is so cute are you using names in English or other languages? I wouldn't suggest something that you're not used to.

And to add to this thread, my gretel now has a name! She is Willow River, a water spirit that protects both the river and its inhabitants and whoever may fall in.

Aww, thank you @PinkBear ! I don’t know why I didn’t think of making her so bright and colourful before!

@billy001 I think it’s just a rim of resin that you can paint however you choose. My SDGr Belle has something similar. Some people just make it similar in colour to the rest of the mouth so it blends in, some paint it more like teeth. To me it looks like it’s at the top half of the mouth, so if you wanted to, you could go the tooth route. Maybe someone who owns one can give better insight.

 

I just bought an SDC Kaede on Mandarake. Now the only SDC girl I’ll be missing is May (I’m not interested in sleeping heads). For the longest time I thought I’d never want a Kaede, but recently I’ve seen cute pics with her in different faceups and a friend of mine got one and I just can’t get her out of my head so... SDC #7 is on her way (well, #8 if you count my F-31 on SDC body)

May is a tricky one to find! I’ve seen them here and there but her resale price has stayed fairly high. My latest three, Ren, Sora, and Kaede have been bargain bin pricing cause they’re older, seeing the normal price is a bit daunting. I wouldn’t rule her out though, the GOTTA CATCH EM ALL feeling is even stronger now

I’ve been messing around with eyes for a few of my gals, and these were not intended for Momo but ended up being pretty dang nice for her. It’s funny how that seems to happen.



Does anyone know of a good place that sells SDC-sized shoes? Beyond just basic sneakers, like a place with cute flats and maybe some boots and things?

 

Those eyes do look really nice! I’m trying to find new putty because the old ones I used seemed to have lost its stickiness and texture. What eye putty do you guys use that you find it easy to remove but still keeps the eyes in place really well?

 

I just use white poster tack. I’ve never had a problem with it.

I use Loctite’s “fun-tak mounting putty.” It’s basically a blue poster tack. It has worked for me and stays fairly flexible. Never left a stain and is pretty easy to get out since it tends to stick to itself.

 

Depends on the eyes. For some, white tack. Others don't seem to want to stay the way I put them when I use white tack (looking at you, glass eyes in Volks heads) for some odd reason, so for those I use eye putty I got from Dollmore. Only eye putty I really like.

 

I switched some of my girls over to their autumn/Halloween looks. Anyone else do seasonal things for their minis?

A dumb question but still asking it anyways: will Volks mail out physical GL membership cards?? It shows 23 yen on my order for overseas delivery fee but how could it be that cheap??? so confused

Does anyone know how the Volks USA Owners Limited thing works? I just got my Noa in the mail (after wanting her for ages eeek) and she came with a little pamphlet to order some option hands that aren't generally available on the site, but the link just leads to an empty page it says the deadline is January 2021 so I assumed they would still be available.

This is my first time getting an SDM directly from Volks (my other 3 came from Mandarake) and all the little touches were so nice to see, like the little handwritten COA with my name on it lol. Getting a doll from Volks feels like... the modern counterpart to picking out a bisque doll from a french boutique in the mid-1800's.

Was going through my collection today after a long time of them being stored elsewhere and realized I have more MSD/SDM than I thought including 2 sculpts I didn't even know I had in my collection...sorry to my F16 and my Ryotarou Kataoka so together with my Sato FCS boys that comes to a total of 7!

Seems like SDM is the largest part of my collection at this point, I always wanted them to be a bit more popular on here, but as I slowly make my way back into the hobby I will try to share some of them as I work to style them! Even when I wasn't participating, loved coming back every now and then to see you all share your children, can't wait to see more!

I've finally gotten back onto DoA to be able to enjoy everyone's dolls more, It's such a wonderful community here! I've never really gotten around to sharing this gorgeous boy I received back in fall of 2018, he arrived while I was in LA for Dolpa funnily enough! My grail Volks, a sunlight skin F-35!

 

I'm so excited! I just sent payment for the first doll I've purchased in nearly a decade - a little MSD Maggie from 2003 that popped up on Mandarake for 9000 yen. My girlfriend helped me to buy her as a birthday gift, which I think makes this doll even more special.

She'll need some elbow grease and TLC (sharpie faceup, yikes), but I'm really excited and can't wait to have a little project doll to work on. I'm already thinking of names...I've really missed the New Doll anticipation.

It’s so wonderful to bring one of these older Volks back from the brink...good for you! I’ll be looking forward to seeing her once you have her completed. I’ve also recently adopted a project doll to work on...an old F-01 Myu from 2002 who is severely and unevenly yellowed, the poor baby. And like you, I’m really looking forward to working on a project during these difficult times. I’m anxiously awaiting her arrival...she’s currently stalled in USPS limbo due to pandemic shipping issues. But yes, the New Doll anticipation is very real and enjoyed here too!

Thank you! He was absolutely an impulse buy but it was one of those moments where you just see them and you know that they're yours and you have to bring them home! I really dont have much of a character or direction I want to take him, but I'm content just to have him for now!

 

@Khell - thank you!! I kept revisiting her listing and getting whacked with nostalgia. I love the current Volks sculpts, but the older ones are so charming and nostalgic to me. And I kept feeling the impulse to rescue her, like a stray cat or something

@Ferret-hime - Congrats on the old girl! I love seeing the really old Volks dolls get new homes and it's been great to see in the past year or so the old sculpts become popular again as people give them a chance

I was struggling with this guy and he almost got rehomed, but this wig has really brought him around and now I am like yes, I can see him! He does need some eyes that fit better. These are going to go my Michele

 

@Kim - me too! I've been really loving the glow-ups people on DoA have been giving to older or damaged dolls. I think there's something very beautiful about taking something that's been unloved for a while and giving it new life!

Also speaking of beautiful - your little guy is gorgeous! What eyes are you planning for him?

 

I've just gotten a little Hewitt head (I've been taken in by the charms of that sculpt for a while!), but have been trying to figure out what body to go along with. I'm hoping for a good range of motion and posability (I've heard sadly that MSDs are not that great in this department), without sacrificing aesthetics. It's been a struggle though, as there seems to be dearth of possible hybrids (I've wanted to do a Tiny Fairy or LUTS hybrid but the neck seems a little thin compared to the Volks MSD heads and I didn't want to buy a body that wouldn't work)...

More recently, I've been seriously considering SDC though- can the legs be propped up so the doll can hold it, and how much forward leaning can it do?
