Definitely get the stand unless you plan for her to sit all the time. They don't really stand well on their own. When I was at outdoor meets, people would always make sure they lean their DDs against something to get standing shots safely.

 

@NyanChoco Is there a stand you recommend or would the typical Kaiser stand work well?

 

I don’t have experience with the Kaiser stands myself, but I have seen others using that style and it seems to work fine.

The Kaiser / thigh grip kind of stand seems to offer less protection from the doll tipping over, or if you have a doll like Saber that might be wearing heavy armor, it could be an issue.

Personally I have the Volks SD metal saddle stand (type C). None of my dolls have heavy armor anything, but no falls have happened for me.

Does anyone have pictures of a DDH-09 with the eye holes modded to be more downturned? Kind of a long shot but figured it would be helpful to see more eye mods before doing anything stupid...

Speaking of stands, does anyone have a preferred stand for dollfies? I'm not sure if the Volks SD stand or the Volks DD stand would be better. The DD stand looks to be plastic while the SD one is metal/wood, but I wonder if the DD stand has some kind of advantage?

Would the SD C-type saddle stands be fine? I really like the wood base they have.

 

Sure, those are fine. I use the Volks SD wooden stands for all my SDs and DDs both. They're sturdy, look classy, and don't tip. The saddle stand is fine for anyone wearing skirts or dresses, but I would suggest the waist-hold type instead for anyone wearing pants. The VS wood stands do cost more than other common stands (by Volks or other brands), so that's a downside if you want a lot of them all at once. I think they're a worthwhile purchase though.

The plastic DD stands are not recommended, even for Dollfie Dream, outside of posing for photoshoots. The plastic is lightweight, designed to be carried outside and screwed into a tripod for support. The articulating arm (or arms plural if you buy accessories) can hold your doll in more esoteric poses than the SD stand can, to go along with the more dynamic poses that DD dolls are capable of holding on their own. It can't support that much weight (i.e. props), which is also why Volks says not to use the heavier SD dolls with the DD stand whatsoever. The plastic material is pretty fragile thus is at risk of breaking on impact or on bending, especially if your tripod is not good and tips. The DD stand is also clear, with the goal of disappearing during a photo shoot. In summary, the DD stand can help you perform unusual photoshoots with DDs, but is not suitable for any other use (including daily use), in my opinion. Didn't the DD stand go out of production, though, not long after being released? Did they come back for sale?

I thought I saw the DD stands on the Volks USA website, but now that I take another look, they seem to be sold out. I don't really remember if it ever said it was available, I guess they just keep the sold out listing for archiving purposes?

The photoshoot potential of the DD stand sounds nice but not sure if it's worth looking for one when I don't need it immediately. I think I've heard of other special stands for photoshoots, from 3rd parties, as well, that might work better than it.

Omg this is a mighty need for me *-* Volks has yet to release a character doll where I'm actually a huge fan of the very character (except for the Sailor Senshi), but Yor is finally one I can totally get behind ♡

 

I'm still hoping one day that maybe Volks will collaborate with the Yu Yu Hakusho franchise.

 

I don't have a specific image of DDH-09 with modded eyeholes in the shape you are looking for but this youtuber has videos of him modding eyeholes so there should be multiple examples. Maybe not DDH-09 in specific (I didn't check for one) but it could help give you a clearer idea in general.

I would also consider looking through Yahoo auctions, a lot of people sell heavily modded heads there so you could check there if anything works for a reference.

If you have a front facing photo of the blank head, you can edit that too and see how you like the shape! This is probably the easiest way of figuring out what you want.

 

I've been thinking about this recently as well...if they ever made Kurama I think that would be an instant purchase for me lol.

Extra outfits have generally been sold separately in the past, most recent I think was Fumika's? But it also sold out pretty fast, about as fast as she did from the clickwar iirc.

 

The extra outfits seem to generally be sold separately, like the extra outfit for Kaito who is on preorder now.

But the extra outfits for non-preorder dolls do seem to sell out quickly in a click war... like Fumika's extra outfit as mentioned above... orz (And since Yor will probably be quite popular, it'll probably be the same.)

 

As much as I love to see Yor released as an official DD from Volks, her face appears very generic to me this time that I can see other head molds able to pull off the same look with face up... And with Tsukihime's Arcueid having the same red eyes, it's like Yor just changed her wig from black to blond Anyone have the same feeling or maybe I just unable to love Yor that much to notice any distinctness in her head design...

 

I don't think my opinion counts much, because I love duplicates and sister-like sculpts, but I find Yor and Arcueid very cute. DD eyes are also very distinct from each other, the designs on the new girls eyes are very very different when you look up close. If anything, Arcueid reminds me more of DDS Skadi (which makes sense with them both being Type-Moon characters)
People were saying the same thing about Megumin looking generic, but once you see more angles their uniqueness begins to show. It doesn't help that they're all anime-style, which suffers from same-face-ness a lot.

 

In addition to the anime style, Volks isn’t super adventurous (and very light with the blush) with their faceups so a lot of the subtle features in the sculpts don’t get highlighted.

Today I was thinking how I feel a lot of the licensed dolls don't have the same flavor as the character they represent. While I'm not super familiar with her, I really like this DD because of the subtle smile with her sharp eyes. Rather expressive!

Hello!

I just ordered my grail Dollfie Dream, Hatsune Miku from an offsite secondhand market! She will more than likely be my only vinyl doll.

But here's my problem. I know absolutely nothing about Volks Dollfies other than they're made of vinyl, they stain easier than BJDs and they can have an internal skeleton. HALP!

Anyone know where I can read up on basic care and feeding of a Volks Dollfie? I really don't want to read all of the different threads about them, especially since this is the 16th thread.

I just found out about DDs sometimes being reissued. Is there any way I can find out which version Miku I got? Like is the box different, or is there a "2" at the end of the product? I'm just curious.

Do you mean the reboots?
Generally, I tell them apart by the frame series they're on, but this isn't always possible (for instance, Asuna and Asuna Titania are both DDIII, although Titania isn't specifically a reboot)
With Miku, the OG was on the old DDIII frame (most of this version of her are probably a bit yellowed by now as well) while the reboot was on DD-f3 frame. You can tell the difference by taking her apart and seeing what the frame looks like, or the simple method of checking the back of her knees (a slit-looking joint is DD3, while a larger opening showing the shin joint is f3 basically). Reboot should also have more vivid makeup.
If you posted a picture of her, there's probably a decent chance that experienced DD collectors could tell you which one she is. However, note that the copyright mark on her head means nothing when telling the two apart- that date is from when the sculpt was originally copyrighted, and reboots use the same sculpt (i.e. a reboot of a doll made in 2021, whose original is from 2014 will still have a "(c)2014" on her head)

The first release of Rin and Len was a preorder and all the vocaloids so far have been preorders, I think, so the chance of it being a preorder is high!

 

@namika yay! I somehow missed Len’s first release. I honestly don’t know how, but ever since, I’ve been looking and so far I have missed him, or I couldn’t get the funds together in time. Now I have time to prepare!

Oh, I guess I must have remembered wrong then... I somehow remember preordering him but must have mixed him up with another doll... maybe Snow Miku.

Edit: Ah, looks like I found someone to help me buy one from Dolpa back then (wow, it's been 6 years already?), that might be why it felt like a preorder to me!

I’m wanting to try for Yor this weekend but am getting nervous! I’ve never tried to order a doll from the international site. If I figured it up right, she should be released at 8pm on Friday EST, right? I want to be ready for the click war!

 

You might want to get some people to help you snipe if possible. A lot of big auctions and limited time buys are botted these days. It's hard for legitimate people to compete.

 

I got my new girl last month and I haven’t shared her yet. She is so cute.

She was brand new. She is a White Christmas Alna made in 2010

 

I don’t really have anyone that can help me unfortunately. My husband will be at work and no one else in my life knows anything about dollfies.

 

I'll have a go at getting Yor Forger later. I'm not optimistic given the Volks website usually displays the overloaded sign when there's the slightest chance there might be a lot of traffic. I wish they'd increase the server load like Lego do... they easily handled the Bricklink Designer sets sales frenzy last May.

My experiences with the Kaito preorder day was that I couldn't really get their website to work at all for the first hour, then I managed to get through, add him to my basket and go through the checkout procedure. I then went through the same to get his extra outfit.

I do have mixed feelings about Yor. I love the anime, but on the other hand I do already have a Dynamite with red eyes. I'm also suspicious of pleather outfits as they tend not to last. On the other hand, if I don't get her in the clickwar I might still be able to find her. As you can see in my avatar, I now have Mytyl. I missed out on her lottery last year but she popped up on Mandarake a year later (albeit at a significant markup).

Did anybody get Yor or Arcueid? From 09:55 - end of sale the Volks site was inaccessible for me. How frustrating .

 

I was on the final step of order process for Yor for 40 minutes but it kept crashing not going to confirmation. Then it took me back to cart saying she was sold out. So disappointed.

 

Miku came home December 28th, and I have gone a bit crazy trying to find snow outfits for her. I managed to find a couple...with a hefty markup, oof, but I'm keeping my eyes open for more nontheless. I'm hoping to someday find her a Sakura Miku outfit. Not the doll, just the outfit.

In the meantime, here is a quick pic I took of Miku wearing the Fluffy coat outfit I managed to find for cheap. I'm so thrilled to finally get my grail vinyl doll!

I've ordered Yor. Now I'll have the mad scramble to try to find her other outfit.

Your Miku is really cute - I have that outfit but nobody's worn it yet. I liked the idea of getting this outfit as it's one of the few Miku outfits that doesn't have a lot of pleather/vinyl material in it.

I did recently acquire what could be Miku's rarest outfit. The price was high but it's an outfit I really like the look of. It should arrive this week and I've nominated Kizuna AI to wear it since she's the closest girl I have to an actual Miku. We decided we needed a standout outfit to take to conventions.

Incidentally, for anyone seeking Miku style wigs, the Dollpoint wigs in Miku melon green are fantastic. Here's DD Asuna (Titania) cosplaying as a Miku style Erika Sendo. The wigs are difficult to get hold of as they're only sold in store, but they do pop up for sale from time to time.

DDS Uzuki is wearing a Cotindoll wig. Their wigs are a superb fit on Dollfies and Smart Dolls, and they do a lot of styles in Miku colours.

 

My Buyee haul arrived. I don't have a Miku so Kizuna is standing in for her. Now I know which types of outfits suit my girls more, I've decided to focus on acquiring a few really awesome outfits, rather than many they might not want to wear much. First up is Miku's Ribbon Girl outfit. This set is just so amazing, and definitely worth every penny. The only downsides are that the shirt material is thin and the buttons are really fiddly. Also the necktie pin doesn't fit very well and I was paranoid it would snap. The socks and sneakers are super cute too, and it's so cool they thought of including a headphone lead.

Uzuki (on the left) has a new wig too. She is a little unsure about it, but loves the colour.

I have a lot of Dollfies now, but this pair are two of my absolute favourites after Towa [DDS Uzuki Shimamura Smile & Sweets version and DDS Kizuna AI].

 

Kizuna's sculpt is so cute as Miku!! I see it sometimes and I love it. Also ugh that Ribbon Girl outfit is adorable!!!

 

@Xiongmao, your girls are super cute! Ugh, now I want that Ribbon Girl outfit for my Miku!

I'm going to end up getting Miku some of the Cotindoll wigs, I love the idea of her being able to change her hairstyle.

I’m very tempted to pre-order DDS Len, but I’m already waiting for Kaito and I’m afraid they will ask for the rest of the payment soon. But another DD boy is so tempting
