:: Volks Dollfie Dreams Discussion Room :: Part XV ::

    1. It just occurred to me that i haven't shared Hana's newest faceup here yet! (her last one lasted two years before it's tragic end)

    2. Thank you for the tips! I'd seen a few tutorials with that method before, I'm not particularly crafty so I'm going to try fitting the head cap underneath the wig and see if I can get it to stay invisible, luckily my Volks USA order came today (gotta love their fast shipping lol) so I can give it a try later. If that doesn't work, I'll probably sew the cap into the wig and trim it like you suggested.

I was thinking I'd rinse the wig in vinegar to see if I can remove some of the excess dye as well! I wish I'd done that before styling the wig, Ami's wig is fairly simple but I hate to style/wash a wig and then have to do it all over again lol.

I do tend to keep my dolls bald when I'm storing them and I don't keep them out for extended periods in the first place, so I'm probably worried about nothing. The only doll I keep wigged is Usagi but I've never had any issues with her wig so it doesn't worry me.

    3. My Volks head caps are here, and fortunately I was able to situate Ami's directly under her wig, so it's providing all the protection I need but not messing with the aesthetics at all! I'm so relieved! It does show at the sides a little bit, but that doesn't bother me.

Her wig looks 100% better with that kink straightened out, with a wash in hot water and some Water Wax in the front to give it more shape.

She's so incredibly beautiful, I can't. Even better than I could have ever imagined!

Bonus photo of Usagi here because she's just...stunning.

    7. I just finished styling Mars' wig and my god, she's so beautiful. A+++ Volks you really did this line perfectly.

      I don't deserve this beauty. <3

    13. Melty is so pretty! She was another sculpt I was considering. Her face seems pretty versatile and I love her elf ears.

    14. I just received my Jeanne about a week ago. She's my first Dollfie Dream. <3

    16. Now that Volks News 83 is out, has anyone seen something regarding a Sakura Miku preorder? I have only seen one article by Volks today talking about how to pick up Sakura Miku or "Reboot" Miku at the event. Given that she´s less versatile than pretty much any Vocaloid DD they made up until now... I´m a bit scared that she might be the first to just be a Limited edition without an additional preorder...

    17. all these sailor moon dolls make me smile :D can't wait to see the other sailor moon dolls! I found out about them too late, I wanted Mars, she is my favorite sailor moon but I like them all so I can probably get the next ones!

    18. I don't trust the white cap either, I had the white body suit that I used on a vinyl doll, I thought she would be protected but her blue jeans stained her so bad, the body suit didn't protect her. :( this is a problem for wigs and clothes, my dolls loves black and blue but those colors are dangerous :(

wow wow!!! this is so informative and amazing! so you're saying that DDs could disintegrate in 50 years? DDS will disappear?good thing I won't be alive in 50 years...what about bjds? I have a bjd that's yellow yellow like banana yellow or worse because he is starting to look green :( I also found out that bjds yellow faster when they're in a box or stored in some place where they have no air and light.

    19. @Arletstar
With urethane-type resin, the molecule adds an oxygen atom from the air, thus becoming more stable. Unfortunately, this often changes the appearance of the resin to a yellowish/greenish hue. Heat and light speed up the reaction.

Pure vinyl is hard and extremely brittle, so a plasticizer is added in to make the vinyl soft and flexible. As the vinyl molecule becomes more and more unstable, the plasticizer starts leaking out (again, 20-50 years). Once that happens, it is no longer safe to handle the doll, as most plasticizers are carcinogenic. If you've ever run across old halloween masks stored in a garage that are kind of a sticky, holey, falling-apart mess, that's kind of what it looks like.

Basically, I like to think of it like this: vinyl dolls are mortal, like us, while urethane dolls are immortal, like Elves. As for the staining, I have sometimes thrown new doll clothes in the washing machine on the gentle cycle, if they aren't too delicate (soak them in warm soapy water overnight if they are) to remove excess dye. I find that it helps a LOT, especially coupled with a bodysuit (the t-shirt material type, not the nylon stocking type).

    20. Hi folks, been lurking in this thread for a while. Time to join in... I've been doing resin dolls for a long time and recently it seems my tastes have shifted to vinyl. I've had a Smartdoll for over a year and am now waiting for the second half of my first DD to arrive. I purchased a custom face-uped head by Mia's Daydream on FB recently and now waiting on her DD2 body from Mandarake.

    21. I just got my order confirm for the Kisaragi Chihaya I bought on Mandarake the other night. Couldn't be more excited!

    22. Thank you for all this, I enjoyed reading it and learning from it. I'm still mind blown at this information, my vinyl dolls will disappear :( but my lovely bjds will be immortal, you made me appreciate my yellow bjds even more now, I can see them as immortal elves. I was sad that he is getting green but I'm now over it and I see him as my magical elf .Thank you!

    23. @Arletstar You're welcome! Glad to be of service! If the discoloration gets especially annoying, there are various brands of plastic-specific spray paint that you can cover it with (although, normal fleshtone is harder to find). I got tired of all the hearsay in the community, so I struggled my way through a bunch of scientific articles on different kinds of plastic and how they age. I was pretty upset, too, when I first learned it. My first BJD was a vinyl one, so it was upsetting that she wouldn't last forever. Every once in a while I still think about selling her and reshelling her character as a resin doll, but I'm currently still too attached.

    24. I got my dream DD a few weeks ago. She is an Akaira 1st version. I bought her from Mabarake at a very low price. She was brand new. Unfortunately she came broken, but I bought the replacement part from Volks and she is like new now. I named her Shakira and she has become my favorite :)

    25. @MrFjmg2003 I love that you named her Shakira! She looks very sweet, congratulations on the great deal :)

Does anyone have Mercury with wigs and eye colors other than the default? She has a very sweet face shape and I really want to see her as someone out of the Mercury look lol

Im planning a trip soon and hope to visit the Akihabara Dollfie Dream store, Doll Choice isnt something I might try, but I really wish for the 11 head in tan but thats COORD exclusive, and research says that non Japan residents cannot enter for those. Ill go and pick up some stuff for 2B, maybe decide between the DDP body or the DDS for her once I see them in person lol

    26. Good news! You don’t need to be a Japan resident to buy DCoord from the Volks shops. And if there isn’t one you love at Akihabara, the Yokohama store also has DCoord dolls. Bad news is that the selection is random so getting tan DDH-11 is not guaranteed. I went in December and found 2 tan DDH-11 in Yokohama (one came back with me) but Akihabara didn’t have much in tan at that time. If you’re in town for a bit you can try again after a few days and see if stock has changed.

    27. @jadepixel thank you :love:love
Ive only been to Japan once before and relied on the Tokyo subway for everything, so Ill ask the hotel how to get to Yokohama since the directions online seem a bit intimidating lol and Im not sure the subway connects

Your girl is so cute and your photography is amazing :D Ill have to think about my excitement for a bit, is my love for the doll because she is exclusive and harder to get, or is it because shes the closest thing to getting a FCS in person

    28. My DD body arrived from Mandarake! So I have my first DD, so excited. Her head has been floating around here for weeks...

I'll take pics soon its just to dark here now to get anything. Hopefully tomorrow.

    33. Looks like Sakura Miku and DDf3 Miku will both be sold on April 28 at Dolpa 41 and then on May 11 for the After Party event. Hopefully Volks USA will be getting some too. Great opportunity to finally own a Miku.

    35. Hey ya'll! So I decided to replace my Mars' wig for several reasons; the left side of the fringe was too thin and, even after my styling, I couldn't conceal the wig cap underneath and it was just so finicky, along with all of the super short layers under the wig that kept popping into her face no matter what, so I just needed something else that wouldn't be so thin and annoying. I couldn't even photograph her from the left because she looked like she was going bald lol.

Leekeworld just came out with this wig, with a similar style to Mars' and and it's the exact same shade as her stock wig, except it's significantly thicker and the fringe is much easier to style. It's only slightly shorter than her stock wig, too.

It came in the mail today and I absolutely love it! I took a few photos before I washed it; the fringe is a little long, I'm not sure if I'm going to cut it yet because it looks so perfect as it is, and exactly how I want Mars to look.

It's hard to show the exact color on camera, but I compared the two wigs and they are, indeed, the exact same shade of dark purple-blue-black!

I thought people would like to know about this, I'm sure others have had issues with Mars' weird stock bangs.

    36. Wanted to share my suntan DDH11 D'COORD I just recently got from Akihabara Doll Point, Ive named her Juri :)

Thank you again so much @jadepixel , I dont think I would have been able to get her if it were not for your help and clarification, I would have seen her and tried to look away thinking I would not be able to welcome home a coord doll :aheartbea I appreciate it so much

@lunar-dream304 Thank you for sharing this, she looks very cute
I did notice that sometimes when I got two of the same wig, there were differences in volume and sometimes length

I dont think you have to cut her hair, maybe use some water wax to make it look shorter or styled away like you currently have her like :) Is the wig fabric inside (I dont know what it is called) light colored or black?

    37. @GreenTeaSlug she's adorable! I'm so glad the expedition worked out well for you :)

    38. Thank you! I decided not to cut the bangs, they're right at the perfect length imo especially after I finished styling and washing the wig:

It's honestly strange to see her with such perfect hair, like I haven't been able to 100% enjoy her until now because I was constantly trying to fix her wig. Now she looks flawless to me and I can finally bond with her!

The wig cap is black, I have a white protective cap underneath the wig :)

    40. Question:

I got a pair of high heeled pumps for Dollfie
Dream from Volks. They're molded plastic
and really too small for her.
Do I heat them up, like in hot water and stretch
them over her feet or do I need different feet or....??
      Anyone else run into this?

    41. Hana's been very patient while i work slowly but surely on this wig commission. Ventilation takes FOREVER!

    42. I entered the lottery for a Sakura Miku. I will be very unhappy if I don't win, all the Mikus I have seen on the Marketplace have been missing pieces, so the odds of getting a complete one second hand are low.

      • x 1
    43. @Layn Good luck! I saw her in person and she looks amazing and all the details are so cute like the brown keypad thing on the sleeves, the eyeballs, the petals in the eye balls and the pink pearl nail polish. Shes my favorite of the Vocaloid release

    44. I got my Megurine Luka home on Tuesday, so I wanted to share a photo of her~ :aheartbea I switched out the default eyes, repainted her and put her on a DDdy body (with modified DDIII L-bust as I'm not a fan of the Dynamite body's boobs).

I documented her box opening in my blog. ^^

    45. Did anyone do the lottery for Miku/Sakura Miku? I’ve never bought through VOLKS before and thought I was entered but the date for announcing winners is passed and I haven’t received anything. If I don’t win would I still get an email? Sorry for potentially newb questions, it’s been about 9 years since I last bought a doll...

    46. @evilnekohilda Unfortunately Volks only sends emails to winners. If it's been a couple of days since the results were supposed to be announced and you haven't received an email, it's likely that you didn't win. :( The lottery entry will eventually disappear from your order history as well.

    48. Has anyone tried to use a DD3 bust on a DD2 body? I want my girl to have a larger bust, but finding one designed for the right body in the right skintone is proving difficult.

    49. hi @Audrina Mystique ! Yup, that is possible. However, it is hard to remove the vinyl material around the hard plastic part (check the internals of your DD2 bust) and slide the new one on, so you might want to use a hairdryer to warm it up first.

I did it on my Rei Ayanami, because the M Bust looks a bit big for her when wearing her uniform so I "demoted" it to S size. I didn't use a hairdryer, but I was scared I might tear it on my first attempt.

    50. @orekimok Thank you! I have a hair dryer I bought specifically for my vinyl dolls, so that won't be a problem. I just wanted to know it would fit before I bought it.

    52. I have question.
Anyone has try to remove yellowing for DD? I have plan to buy old dd model but it yellowing.

    53. Dollfie Dreams don't really yellow... Some of the old white skin do have some color change issues, but generally the NS doesn't yellow the way resin does. I have two of the 2009 Rih Tohsaka v1 DDs, and there is only the sliiiiiiightest difference between them and my 2017 Kirito. If there's discoloration, it's likely staining and not yellowing, in which case normal stain-removing techniques apply.

    54. @Kitsune88 Very nice!
I love twin sculpts, but I like it even more if they are unique in some way

I just noticed that they have the same mole, but mirrored, it is such a nice touch!!!!!

@Mizya that is very impressive, she looks professional and the body looks more natural like this
I always wondered why the other lines had all kinds of busts but the DDDY only had pushup and forwards busts lol

    55. @Alisa_sasa @Cauldroness actually, yes, they do yellow over time. Vinyl does not yellow AS FAST as urethane resin, but it DOES yellow. Honestly, there isn't a lot you can do about it, because the chemical process is different in vinyl than it is in urethane. (Urethane gains an oxygen atom, while Vinyl loses a chloride atom.) However, I have found that it's not as extreme in Volks vinyl; my Volks doll has yellowed a LOT LESS than my Obitsu has, though, even though she's older.

Whether the doll you're interested in is yellow because of natural yellowing or staining really depends on the age of the doll and the condition it's been kept in. Is it a fairly new doll? Has it been kept indoors, at room temperature, away from windows? If so, it could be staining. However, if it's extremely old (my Dollfie Dream was purchased around 2009 and she's only very slightly yellowed), it's likely to be natural yellowing.

    56. Hi all, is there a DD head mold that resembles the resin SD Ria sculpt?
