Your doll(s) company/ sculpt: Fairyland / MNF Halloween 2018 event head Briefly describe your entry's concept: I recently came across some newspapers from the 1950s, and I adored the yellowed pages and the coffee stains on the papers. Complete list of methods used to create your entry: Photos were taken digitally, and modified using photo editing app to change the temperature of the images. Then, I printed the images on recycled paper I made myself. Afterwards, I used tea and coffee to stain and "age" the paper further. Your doll(s) company/ sculpt: Ingenieuse by Twigling/Artifex Kindred x Magic Mirror collaboration Briefly describe your entry's concept: When I looked through the possible photo ideas for this vintage theme, I remembered the glamorously dressed and decorated ladies I saw in "The Great Gatsby" (2013) and wanted to use 1920's western fashion as the main element in my photograph. Even though the film is made with modern technology and it's colored, I tried to mimic the real 1920's photographs and aged my photo to look more authentic. Her accessories are all self-made by me and her outfit is an old dress I modified to fit the look of "20's diva". Complete list of methods used to create your entry: Backdrop canvas with a room picture on the background, doll sized chair, table, props, soda in her glass. The internet is new to the average person, and there's no better way to show off how cool you are than posing for a moody, grunge themed picture with a disposable camera, waiting a few weeks to get it developed, scanning it to your computer and uploading it to your Yahoo profile, where everybody in chat will insist that's not really you. Your doll(s) company/ sculpt: Volks Dollfie Dream DDII body with DDH-01 head. Custom Face-up by CardMDesigns on Instagram. Briefly describe your entry's concept: I wanted to take the photos a loved one might have on their wall after someone's death. In that vain, I took an intimate portrait, a burlesque photo (how they met), and a bereavement photo from her funeral. I wanted it to feel like the type of photos one might pass down from generation to generation. Complete list of methods used to create your entry: Photos were taken using an iPhone 6s. Your doll(s) company/ sculpt: Volks Show, Magical Angel Kelly Briefly describe your entry's concept: It's a Kodak moment! Two friends goofing off captured forever on Kodak film! Complete list of methods used to create your entry: All of the "ageing effects" were achieved solely with a genuine vintage camera and genuine vintage film (a vintage Kodak disposable camera, to be exact). The original shot somehow came out blue; I filtered out the blue and lightened and clarified the image. Those were the only digital effects used, besides cropping and resizing. The first image is the altered one, the second image is how it originally turned out (still cropped and resized, of course). To add photos: Click the Upload Image button at the bottom. Your doll(s) company/ sculpt: Volks SDM-F-42 Briefly describe your entry's concept: For this contest, I chose to use multiple exposure photography. I thought that the soft, ghostly quality of the photographs would suit this years theme of delicate things. It is also a form of photography that is unique to film, because while it can be made digitally, the nuances of the multiple exposures are difficult to fully capture without using film. Complete list of methods used to create your entry: These photos were shot on a Fujifilm Instax Mini Neo 90 Classic. Instax Mini film was first developed in 1998, but this camera in particular wasn't released until 2013. Multiple exposure techniques have been around since nearly the beginning of photography. With this camera, the process is very simple. There is a special mode that allows you to take multiple exposures on the same piece of film, by not ejecting the film until two shots have been taken. The brightness and composition of each exposure is difficult to control on an instax, so capturing a good superimposition can be tricky. Not pictured are the half dozen failed attempts at getting a few good shots. Images: Are you the creator of this photo? Yes Was this photo taken specifically for DoA's 15th Anniversary? Your doll(s) company/ sculpt: Pipos Rosie Briefly describe your entry's concept: My doll's character lives in old time fantasy world, and her appearance is inspired by that, so I used a prop and editing to amp it up more. Complete list of methods used to create your entry: I shot in a low light and increased my camera's ISO to add noise I cropped the photos so they have dimensions I've noticed many vintage photos have I used more warm and soft lightning to add a yellow tint I edited the light even more yellow and added grain and lowered the contrast in Photoshop express I added a frame To add photos: Click the Upload Image button at the bottom. Your doll(s) company/ sculpt: Fairyland Chicline Lishe Briefly describe your entry's concept: I chose to try and recreate the effect of a salt print or calotype (invented in 1841 by Talbot) because when I was a child I used to visit antique stores with my mother and one of my favorite things was the boxes of old photographs that I could find there, which I would sort through as long as anyone would let me. Photos taken in this method were prone to fading and had a softer focus than other methods like Daguerreotypes, but I love the dreamy, almost ghostly quality of such images. They always made me feel like I was holding something that might disappear at any moment. Complete list of methods used to create your entry: I do not have a Victorian camera (that would be amazing, if I would not also be scared to touch it) so... Cell phone camera: LG X Charge Editing in PhotoScape X: desaturation, color adjustment, light and shadow adjustment, clarity adjustment, multiple filters, additional distressing in program by hand (speckling, edges) Are you the creator of this photo? yes Was this photo taken specifically for DoA's 15th Anniversary? yes Are you competing for the prize, or are you competing just for fun? prize Have you read the 2019 anniversary and prize eligibility rules and do you agree to follow them? yes
All responses will be displayed with your entry. Entries with skipped questions will be disqualified. Your doll(s) company/ sculpt: Lillycat Chibbi Lana Briefly describe your entry's concept: My photos are based off the Holga, a plastic medium format 120 film camera manufactured in Hong Kong during the 1980s. Due to the inexpensive plastic body this camera usually had a number of flaws including light leaks, blurry areas, and focusing issues. Its simple design made double exposures very easy however, and it quickly became beloved for its interesting effects and affordable price. Complete list of methods used to create your entry: I used my digital camera, a Nikon D7100 with a 40mm Nikkor macro lens that I use as a prime lens. Since my Holga camera that I would have used had I done actual film doesn't have a flash I opted to take hand held photos in natural light only. All of the effects were made in photoshop. Your doll(s) company/ sculpt: Soom Puss in Boots Jr Briefly describe your entry's concept: In the early years of photography was compared to today a very special event. The familys which were able to afford this novelty gathered in their best clothes to get their pictures taken. Often they sat down because every movement resulted in blurred pictures.. This I wanted to create with my little fancy catboy Complete list of methods used to create your entry: Photo was taken with my Lumix GX8 + my 25mm 1.7 and edited with Affinity Photo (changed the photo to monochrome, added a faded look via level adjustments, added a light vignette, added a black filled layer and changed mode on multiply negative, added 2 scratch textured layer, added a paper texture and set it to multiply Images: Are you the creator of this photo? yes Was this photo taken specifically for DoA's 15th Anniversary? yes Are you competing for the prize, or are you competing just for fun? prize Have you read the 2019 anniversary and prize eligibility rules and do you agree to follow them? yes

Your doll(s) company/ sculpt: Iplehouse KID Milly (Amanda) Iplehouse KID Ah-ra (Jennifer) Iplehouse BID Coco (Missy) Briefly describe your entry's concept: I wanted to emulate the Polaroid family photos of the mid to late 20th century, along with the nostalgia of some of the popular toys and books of the 1980's. These two little friends in 1987 are having a sleepover in their blanket fort, when Amanda's little sister shows up to cause mischief. I tried to take the photos from the perspective of a parent crouched down to see inside the fort. Complete list of methods used to create your entry: My method was a bit of a combo of digital and analog. I took the photos with my cell phone, then transferred them to an Instax SP3 "printer", which exposes digital photos onto instant camera film (the same film used by Instax square format film cameras). The results are a bit unpredictable compared to a normal photo printer, because the image is being developed onto film rather than printed onto photo paper. I dusted off my cursive to write the captions, then photographed the pictures to upload them here. All responses will be displayed with your entry. Entries with skipped questions will be disqualified. Your doll(s) company/ sculpt: Ringdoll K Briefly describe your entry's concept: Sepia-toned old-timers portrait. Complete list of methods used to create your entry: I used a Canon Digital Rebel XT to take the photo. Digital yes, but not so new that it has the built-in WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity that the latest cameras have. It has a CF card that I have to take out then put in a card reader so that I can get the photos to my computer. I chose to use this camera as it has more settings to fiddle with, and isn't as easy as just snapping a pic with the phone. That and my film SLR camera is broken. I also do not own a printer, so I resorted to digitally aging it. I'm not sure I could have found a way to get it sepia-toned without digital enhancement anyway. I used Clip Studio Paint to do the aging. Images: Are you the creator of this photo? Yes Was this photo taken specifically for DoA's 15th Anniversary? Your doll(s) company/ sculpt: Kids-Sky "Bobo" Briefly describe your entry's concept: I remember when my sister-in-law was gifted a Polaroid camera right before my nephew was born in 1995 and she took pictures of EVERYTHING, especially the kids' birthday parties! A lot of her pictures were kind of hit-or-miss, but she caught some really sweet moments of everyone growing up. I used an Instastax camera to take pictures of my doll's birthday party to replicate the feel of these photos, complete with the little commentary notes at the bottom like my sister-in-law used to do. Complete list of methods used to create your entry: I just used an Instastax camera, then put them in a photo album and took a picture of them, since I don't have access to a scanner. Your doll(s) company/ sculpt: Souldoll Hye on an Ariadoll body Briefly describe your entry's concept: I went for a vintage feel, contemplative and emotive. I used a 1930's lace collar insert to drape around my model as clothes and a pearl necklace to give a contrast it. I kept all the colors light and neutral to have the medium of the film be able to play it's part in the structure of the end result. Complete list of methods used to create your entry: I used my fathers 1957 Asahi Pentax, the first widely commercially available 35mm SLR camera. With it I used a special harmonica lens additive, a 50mm lens and a big diafragma to create the soft blurred atmosphere. I used Natural daylight. The photo's have a sort of dark to light gradient because the shutter has been worn out and thus doens't respond as it should and it's casting a dark shadow on parts of the film. The film was then developed and printed at our local shop and printed as a 10x15 high gloss print. I scanned them with my phone's camscanner. All responses will be displayed with your entry. Entries with skipped questions will be disqualified. Your doll(s) company/ sculpt: Iplehouse Tania Briefly describe your entry's concept: In Cottingley, between 1917 and 1928, two girls aged 9 and 16 took five photos that they said were of fairies by the stream at the bottom of their garden. Many influential people, including Arthur Conan Doyle, were convinced the pictures were genuine and it was only in the 1980s that the girls admitted that the fairies were cardboard cutouts and the whole thing was a hoax. I love the fact that many experts examined the pictures and negatives to rule out alteration, double exposure or other camera tricks but didn't detect the very manual process the girls actually used, so I took my photos using the same technique and no editing after the photo was taken. Complete list of methods used to create your entry: The original Cottingley "fairies" were hand drawn by Elsie, copying illustrations from a book, but for a photography contest, I wanted to use photographs. I also liked the idea of using the same doll multiple times in my final pictures, so the main doll in the photo and all five fairies are all Iplehouse Tania in a selection of different outfits and wigs.I didn't make wings or try to duplicate the clothing, but in the original photos, Francis and Elsie are dressed in demure Edwardian clothes, while the fairies are more scantily dressed with more modern hairstyles, so I did style my fairies and my main model accordingly. I also chose colours to try to ensure there would be reasonable contrast in monochrome pictures when put against medium and dark greens outside. The Cottingley photographs look fake to us now with our knowledge of what camera trickery can do, but were not obviously faked to the original audience – I could have tried to make my fairies look more realistic, but to be true to the originals I took the fairy photos using my camera’s basic monochrome setting, then printed in greyscale onto slightly textured paper to mimic that the originals were drawings. I also used cream paper to avoid stark whites making the fairies look overexposed in the foreground (which did happen in the originals). Francis and Elsie used hat pins to set up their fairies – I didn't have hat pins, so after cutting the fairies out, I taped some of my longest sewing pins to the back of them and then attached them to leaves. Tania was then added using a doll stand hidden by her hair or body. I didn't want to duplicate the exact poses of the original photos and I added more fairies to my pictures than Elsie drew for hers. However I did take inspiration from the three most consistent of the original photos, Frances with the Fairies, Frances and the Leaping Fairy and Fairy offering a Harebell to Elsie. Because I did not want to edit the photos digitally, I took a wide variety of shots using a mixture of monochrome and sepia camera settings. In the end the ones that best made both the fairies and the main model stand out against the garden but not unnaturally so were taken with a dynamic monochrome setting (so the darkest and lightest colours were more intense than in the standard monochrome setting). My camera is digital, but all set up and settings were done in camera and I used no digital editing techniques except to resize the photos to 800 pixels square. Your doll(s) company/ sculpt: Volks old F-05 on custom body Briefly describe your entry's concept: I wanted to try and evoke vintage boudoir photos but with a fantasy twist! Complete list of methods used to create your entry: I used pinhole photography to create the photos with black and white photographic paper. I made a few pinhole cameras from tins, boxes, and crates I had around the house. The photos were processed using darkroom chemicals, and I inverted the images using the computer (pictures come out of the pinhole camera as a paper negative). Each picture I captured had a shutter time of around 10 minutes, with 5 minutes chemical processing time after all just to view the NEGATIVE which then had to be scanned in and inverted To add photos: Click the Upload Image button at the bottom. Your doll(s) company/ sculpt: Dollzone Feilian Briefly describe your entry's concept: Vintage photographs are notable not just for the traditional film techniques and the effects they achieved, but also the popularity of subject matters in bygone eras that differ from what we're accustomed to seeing in modern day. The concept for this entry was the "Memento Mori", or post-mortem photography popular in Victorian times. As photography was still of limited accessibility to the masses, a post-mortem photograph was often the only picture people would have of their loved ones, particularly those who died at a young age. Complete list of methods used to create your entry: This was an attempt to reproduce one of the earliest methods of photography with the resources I had on hand. I constructed a simple camera obscura-type device out of two cardboard boxes and a magnifying lens, but instead of projecting the image onto photographic paper, glass, tin, etc. to be developed, the image was projected onto wax paper. I used the camera on my LG phone for two pictures and a Pentax K-50 for the other to take a picture of the image projected onto the wax paper. I used Adobe Photoshop to flip the images, crop, and resize. No other editing or effects were used. To add photos: Click the Upload Image button at the bottom.
