Contest Photography Contest: Vintage Photograph Challenge--WINNERS

Aug 7, 2019

    1. WINNERS-- at end of this post!
      ===========================

      Vintage Photographs

Many of us can remember looking through our parents’ and grandparents’ photos and wondering what life must be like during those times. This challenge will allow us to show just that through our dolls. The history of photography is agreed to have begun in the 1830's, in France. The popular definition of vintage is anything older than 20 years. For this challenge, we would like you to replicate the traditional film photographic styles and techniques from a time between the years 1830 and 1999.

This contest will require some research on behalf of the participants as entries will be limited to techniques other than digital photography. We understand that most people only have access to digital cameras and encourage those participants to either print and age their photographs to mimic the aesthetics of vintage photographs or digitally age their entries to look like vintage photographs. Special recognition will be given to participants not using digital photography.

      Rules
      1. Your photograph(s) must be created by using any photographic method in use from the birth of photography in 1830, until 1999.
      2. If using contemporary digital means to produce your photograph(s), they must have the look of photographs from that past range of photographic production. We understand that most participants only have access to digital cameras and suggest that digital images are aged to look like photographs from before 1999 either digitally or printed and aged by hand.
      3. All photographs to be submitted must be scanned into a JPG or PNG file format, suitable for uploading, no larger than 800 pixels on the longest side.
      4. Photos should not be watermarked or designed in such a way so as to easily indicate the identity of the creator.
      5. You may submit only one entry of 1–3 images.
      6. Your photo(s) must have been taken specifically for this contest. Please do not submit work done prior to this event.
      7. The doll featured in your photo(s) must be on topic.
      8. No posting entries or other photos that are recognizably from the same photo shoot until after the contest is closed.

IMPORTANT: Describing your entries, posting photos, revealing your alias, or soliciting votes (either on DoA or on offsite blogs or forums) before the contest has closed will result in disqualification.

All entries must also meet the general anniversary contest rules and eligibility requirements.

      How to Enter
      Your submission must include:
      • 1–3 photographs of the same doll. No additional photographs may be submitted.
      • A short statement (3 sentences maximum) explaining what effect you were trying for (whether due to a specific photographic method, or specific aspects of the appearance of physically-created photographs from the past).
      • Please specify if you used digital/software means or a specific vintage physical method to create your photo(s).

    2. I'm just curious if any of you all regularly shoot film? Unless you're developing and scanning yourself, it takes about a week to send your rolls in and get them back from most labs. Also, a lot of cameras don't allow you to change film mid-way through a roll, so someone may have to blow a loaded roll in a week, plan their shot , load the desired film, and do probably 5 shots for the event, blow the other 31, get it developed...

Film is a slower turn around than digital, 2 weeks is kind of tight.

    3. Most of the U.S. has one hour photo still available, Walmart, Target, Walgreens etc. and disposable cameras are pretty inexpensive.

    4. If film is available to you within the timeframe, feel free to use it. For others, if it is not that readily available, feel free to use digital and either print out the photo and age them by hand, or age them digitally.

    5. Sounds like an exciting contest! One question. In the first post, you say

Does this mean people using non-digital photography will have a higher chance of winning, or just that they will get bragging rights, or...? Not that it changes my plans, just curious! :)

    6. When the entry period closes, members can vote for their top 3 favorite entries. This is when voters should give special consideration for entries that used non-digital methods. :)

    7. Thanks for the clarification! :)

    8. Will photos from the modern Fujifilm Instax accepted?

    9. Yes because it is intended to emulate a vintage method (just as ageing a modern print by hand would).
Just a friendly reminder: please be sure to mention all methods and equipment used in your entries. :)

    10. Oh I wish I could afford to use my vintage camera for this - but it'll be like $20-30 to develop the film and far too expensive. Will have to think about digital alternatives.

    11. When you say, "1-3 photographs of the same doll", does it also have to be in the same outfit, with the same background, etc.? Could we change it up at all, such as, removing a hat, changing the pose?

    12. Removing a hat and changing a pose is fine as long as the set works together as a whole. As for changing major aspects, if you can make it work as a set (parts making up a cohesive idea), that’s fine.

    13. Is it acceptable to use more than one method to age the different shots in the entry, provided they are all emulating the same historical look? Just as an example, submitting an entry emulating photos from 1850, where one was aged digitally, one was printed and then aged by hand, and one was taken with a pinhole camera and then developed in a darkroom?

    14. Yes absolutely! We encourage everyone to try different methods (just keep in mind your entire entry needs to be cohesive: as in have a consistent theme in all the images).
Just another clarification, photo editing software and apps are allowed. Regardless of whichever method(s) you choose, be sure to list them all in your entries!

    15. One hour photo no longer exists around my area (unless digitally sent). We have to mail out disposable cameras and it can take a few weeks to receive the physical pictures.

But I will try my hand at digital to see what I can do. X3

    16. I just bought a disposable camera today at Walmart, but I didn't think to ask if they develop it on site...I sure hope they can...If not, I guess I'll be retaking photos digitally and printing them!

I'm assuming to get the printed photos online, we should just scan them? (Like I did in the 90s. :D )

    17. Do the dolls have to look like they are from that time period, clothing wise?

    18. You say that all photos must be of the same doll - does that mean that only one doll can be in photo or are group shots okay?

And can multiples photos be from different time periods or use different techniques so long as they are the same dolls as models?

    19. If you have an actual camera store nearby, check with them to see if they develop film onsite. Walmart, CVS, and Walgreens all seem to use outside services for developing. CVS lists a 7-10 day turnaround time. I can't find turnaround time info for Walmart or Walgreens. A lot of these places also apparently won't return your negatives. Here's a blog post I found: Developing Film at Retail and Drugstores - Film Return Policy - The Darkroom Lab

    20. Thanks for the info! Our Walmart is currently being remodeled and don't have their photo center open at all right now, so here's hoping for Walgreens! I guess I'll find out tomorrow. And go ahead and take some digital photos, just in case.

    21. You can scan them or take photos of them— whatever works!

We have no rules about that... it’s up to you. Clothes or props may help with the vintage look of your photos, however.

Group shots are fine. The 1 to 3 photos should look like they are related in some way. They should look like a set.

      • x 1
    22. [QUOTE} Group shots are fine. The 1 to 3 photos should look like they are related in some way. They should look like a set.[/QUOTE]

So can you technically tell a three panel story?

    23. So after buying a camera and taking all the shots, I’ve discovered some of you were right: there is nowhere in town to get photos developed from film in less than two weeks. :( So for anyone who was considering doing this, check around first and see if you have somewhere to develop it first so you don’t end up wasting time and money.

On the up side, at least I realized this with enough time left to reshoot it digitally! :sweat

    24. I was hoping to do real film but... I think it will have to be digital for cost reasons. But thats ok, I have a couple different ideas. :)

    25. Yes you can :) Just echoing what @april said, be sure to keep it as a cohesive set. :)

    26. Time to whip out my old photography book that I never read... I foresee some improvised dark rooms in our futures. :XD: **edit** I just realized polaroids could count! I wonder if I know anybody with a camera I could borrow?

    27. I finally got some pictures printed and now my scanner quit working. I've had so many setbacks on this contest, I can't do anything but laugh at this point. :XD: If I have to resort to using my phone, I WILL get this submitted in time! I never imagined taking a picture would take longer and more work than sewing a lace costume, but every year, I learn something new from anniversary contests! :thumbup

    28. One of the best pieces of advice we can give is to start early to work around any unforeseen problems!

I’m so excited to see how the entries will turn out, so many people are working hard! The very best of luck to you all!

    29. The BEST advice right here! I can't imagine how upset I'd be if I ran into all of this in the last few hours of the last day. I'd probably give up and cry. lol But as it is, I am finally getting ready to submit my entry in the next few minutes, let the stress be over and focus myself on Triathlon #2 now! :cheer

    30. Oh man, I wonder if I can get hold of one of those disposable cameras. I know we also have them here, but not where... Develop would also be a problem probably

[Edit] I just remembered I have an instax so I just need to buy more film LOL

    31. Well, i have one idea I wanted to try! I’m going to see if I can do it. I got another idea because of a lucky find today! So hard to figure out which to do!

    32. I didnt remember traditional photography to be so hard, I kinda gave up

    33. I felt the same. We've been spoiled with modern technology, it's hard to believe I used a disposable camera for almost every photo from high school and thought it was the best!

    34. There is always the option of digitally aging an image to reflect the traditional aesthetic! There is still time to try! :)

    35. So... I guess my experiment is a flop. I got a Brownie no2, model e camera on Monday (this model was made between 1919 and 1924) it was made to put cameras into everyone’s hands. Anyway totally over developed the film. Guess it’s time to move on to option 2!

    36. I sent the bad pictures anyway, I felt it was better doing bad in the actual purpose than doing great in the way I always use. Im kind challenging the odds...

      • x 1
    37. If we are aging our pictures digitally, do we need to specify the editing program we are using?

    38. I posted mine, I’m new to the contest and all that and I am not sure if its okay or needed to be fixed?

    39. @Cloudsorano I’m not a mod, so I hope it’s okay to comment, but usually if you submit early enough (as in, not within the last few hours before the deadline) they will contact you and let you know if something is wrong and can be changed. If your entry disappears/you can’t access the page anymore, it’s been accepted.

    40. Wait, I submitted last week and I can still access my entry... Does that mean that my entry hasn't been accepted? Because I haven't been contacted by anyone saying anything is wrong...

    41. I can still see my entry and was wondering the same thing.

    42. Only the mods can answer this for sure, but on the triathlon, my entry didn’t disappear until just before the deadline, so if you haven’t gotten a mod message, it’s probably fine!

    43. Phew! Thought I might be too busy to participate in this contest, but I managed to find some time to take my photo this afternoon. Good luck to everyone, and I'm looking forward to seeing all the other entries! :)

      • x 1
    44. Yes you need to specify what you did (physical methods and/or software used) to create your entry.

      Yes we’ve received it. :)

      We received your entry. :)

We normally don’t confirm individual entries. They have been coming in and we will contact participants if there are any issues. Very best of luck to everyone participating!

    45. Have been having so many technical differculties. Hopefully just scarped in.

    46. If our entries are still visible at this point is everything still ok?

    47. Received!

    48. Did I miss the voting link somewhere? I don't see it on the opening thread post.

      • x 1
    49. I'm guessing the more entries there were, the longer it takes to make the voting thread. The face-up voting thread was up pretty quickly, but then there were only nine entries. There are probably more for this. This is just a theory though. :) I'm also anxiously awaiting my chance to vote!

      • x 3
    50. Yes... definitely more entries for this contest! We're sorting out the voting thread now and it will be up as soon as possible.

    51. *Slams head on desk* I had an entry and completely forgot to enter. Oh well, can't wait to see everyone elses entries!

    52. Am I checking the time zone wrong or is the votation post late? I never know about time zones

    53. Yes, voting is late due to technical issues. Will be up asap. Most likely tonight.

      • x 7
    54. I'm really curious how all the photos will look like, which old techniques we will see :D

    55. I just had a look at the entries, and gosh, voting was hard! There were so many great photographs to choose from!

      • x 3
    56. I am so in love with these entries!! It was worth the wait to see them. I thought my entry was really good, but I’m pretty sure I don’t stand a chance now. Lol You guys are amazing!

      • x 2
    57. These are great! I don't have a strong photography background so I don't really know the difficulty level to create some of these, but they look so real! Very hard to pick only 3!
