Modification Vidania: poseability/height mods on a resinsoul 60cm body

May 3, 2020

    1. Hey everyone! You may remember me from Paladin, in which I make a 75cm woman with big muscles, but I’m far from done with weird mods, and my next victim is my resinsoul hybrid.

Resinsoul’s 60cm body is a lovely body, especially for the price. It’s very slender, however, and it has a bit of a back bend that I intend to correct, so it’s not always arched.

This is going to get fixed by cutting another joint under her bust, like bimong’s Narae58 has.

I also want to move her bust down a tiny bit, and de inflate it a little, because right now, she has corset boobs, and they’re sculpted very high up on her chest.

I’m going to sand them down a bit and resculpt them a touch lower (not quite as low as the line but not as high as the doll has them!).

Finally, I’ve seen a mod on here where someone cut sections out of legs to shorten a doll, and this one is really leggy. Her legs are probably half her height. I estimate the torso mods will take off about a cm of resin, but her character is shorter than that. In my scale, 1ft is 10.71 cm (based on 75cm=7ft with my tallest), which means a 5’ tall girl should be 53-54 cm.

I’m going to take one section out of her upper thigh, and make a mobility joint, and then take one section from her upper calf, and one from her lower calf, to hopefully make those legs a bit closer to in scale, and shrink her up. (note: I’ve actually measured this on the doll, but took no pictures, so you’ll see some when I start work!)

after that, the fun part. Vidania has extensive tattoos, some of which are on joints, so I’m probably going to have to tattoo her and then look into protectants fro my work. (I designed her before I knew I was making her,,, sooo..., also please ignore the very, very rough draft).

I will also need to probably make a dark purple side shaved wig, and 12mm grey eyes, except that I’m so picky with eyes that that’s secretly harder than the modding. She is a Withdoll Adriana, faceupped by Adrenaline Aesthetics, and is perfect for the character already!

Finally, as a DnD cleric, she’ll need her spell casting focus (or holy symbol)

      to do list:
-sand down bust to resculpt breasts
      -torso joint modifications
      -upper thigh mobility joint
      -calf reductions
      -tattoo work
      -wig
      -eyes
-spellcasting focus from the start of the campaign

all body pics in this post have been taken from Resinsoul’s official listing/promo pics, and have been badly photo edited by me to demonstrate the mods I plan to do.

    4. The leg shortening mod is a pretty easy way to shave off a couple of centimetres - I did it myself with Resinsoul's other female body but I had the advantage that she already had the thigh swivel joints.

[IMG]Resinsoul Body Mods by Rubydoll Chaos, on Flickr

I only took a small bit off her ankles because I was trying to make it easier for myself and because her ankles aren't that curvy. I did have to work harder on my April Story girl who did get thigh swivel joints added and I did as your picture demonstrates - took a segment out of the ankle then put it back together. If you're planning to do what I did and fix the parts back together with Milliput then maybe don't do what I did here - I filled the stringing channel figuring I'd drill it back out afterwards.

[IMG]Leg Progress by Rubydoll Chaos, on Flickr

I drilled the hole but the S hooks still kept catching. I sanded out some more. Still catching, more sanding...maybe you're more confident with power tools or don't have to work in a freezing garage but I'd still suggest trying to avoid that. Also, don't fiddle around with it while it's drying. I pulled two bits apart because I didn't let the Milliput sit and stick.

      I have that body as well and while I quite like the sway back, I am considering making the bust a bit smaller. Lower hadn't occurred to me so I'm really looking forward to seeing what you do there. I did consider sawing my other Resinsoul girl in half to shorten her torso but I don't think I want to. I don't want her to end up like my poor guy on the Yi body who is still waiting for me to finish this mod;

[IMG]Progress Shot by Rubydoll Chaos, on Flickr

It's the sanding. It's so tedious. I decided when I started that he's going to have a massive scar round his middle to take the pressure off being neat. One of the reasons to follow this thread is so I'll be inspired to finish what I've started!

Love the tattoo design - I take it you're going to paint them on yourself rather than using transfers? I used a varnish called Poly-C on a fully airbrushed body as an alternative to Minwax which I couldn't get here in the UK. It seems pretty good but I have had some issues with it - but they may be user-error. Apparently Mod Podge cures rock hard if you leave it for about three months but I haven't tested that myself.

Good luck - I'm looking forward to seeing your progress!

    5. @rubydoll wow, thank you so much for all the knowledge! It's great to talk to someone who's done this before! I ended up taking a lot off my girl, becasue sanding hides all crimes, right? Also, because she's so much taller than her character should be, and her character has literally been brought back from the dead, so scars aren't an issue here!

your work on your girl's thighs looks so neat! I literally couldn't tell she'd been modded till I saw how much shorter she was! and I think I'll have to paint the tattoos on, and then look into Poly-c/Minwax. I'm testing Mod Podge on another project, so I can keep you posted on hardness. My current plan for reattaching her pieces is to fill the insides of her joints with something, maybe even a bungee cord the same thickness as her stringing channels, and then apoxie everything back together, and sand it flat. I'm thinking even if I have some inevitable seepage, I can yank the cord out, and have a workable channel at the end.

as for her bust, I think the sway back really throws me off, because it looks better to me when I tip her back up straight than it does in the pics, but I do think I'm still going to mod it. My character has a fairly small chest, and I've already discovered that I kind of like sculpting from my MtF mod project, so I'm not worried about sculpting her chest again, if it comes to that and I get overzealous with the sanding.I might order apoxie super white, or give miliput a whirl for the colour match though...

    6. Yeah, my Resinsoul bodied girl there is supposed to be younger than most of my other characters so I wanted her a bit shorter - the things we do to make dolls fit our characters! The only tip I can think of to get the thighs neat is to wrap your sandpaper around a block and then put it on a flat surface so you can rub the piece on it. If you're intending to make working swivel joints then don't do what I did with my April Story girl. I thought using large wooden balls/beads would work instead of sculpting the inner ridge. It works okay but the lack of a straight wall to hold the leg in place means it tends to gap - this is probably made worse because AS are strung weird.

If you open out the stringing channel a bit first you'll make space for the epoxy/Milliput so it shouldn't seep much. If you remove whatever you use to keep the stringing channel clear before it's properly set then it won't get stuck that should work well. If she's white resin and you use white Milliput it shouldn't show but Resinsoul does turn a creamy white in time. Hopefully all over body blushing should help.

I do find that torso joint kind of annoying because it's hard to get her to stay up straight - that would be nice as an option. I'm a lot more comfortable with subtractive mods rather than additive ones but it sounds like you've got some experience with it. Are your other mod projects up here on DoA?

      • x 3
    7. @rubydoll I'll keep that in mind. Everything's super rough right now, but I'm still under the lines, so I have space to fix it, I guess!

And thanks for the tip on her channels! She's already pretty creamy, but she's going to be pretty covered anyway, between blushing, scars and tattoos.I'm actually the polar opposite with mods, I am so comfortable with additive, but not at all comfortable with subtractive, until today I decided I was going to run before I walked ahaha. My big additive mod project where I've sculpted her chest is here. She's going to be a lot more work than even just the sculpting has been though.

      ___

So, on with the Frankenstein photos:

Here we can see everything all marked out, and even some guidelines on it for where the centre of her torso is. I don't think I'm doing the joint above her pelvis that I've mapped out. Too in the way of the tattoos on her hipbones. Still adding an unederbust joint though, I think. I really like the way that looks, but who knows what I'll do next. It's notable that I'm removing a lot of resin, and I don't think the sheer amount of resin was real to me until I did it. Also, first time using a Dremel, so sink or swim, I guess. Thank god Resinsoul will sell you parts if you goof.

Practice safe dremelling, kids. Even if your neighbours think you look a bit like an alien.

It's at exactly this point that "The Point of No Return" from phantom of the opera started playing on my headphones. What an omen. Past the point of no return, the final threshold -the bridge is crossed, so stand and watch it burn... we've passed the point of no return...

Never let a theatre kid near a keyboard, people. Never

This is the very start of her torso. I've hit my wits end with her torso, so my current plan is to. intentionally take off too much material, and then apoxie the joint on, because what is colour matching? It makes getting the joint to fit right easier. Also, I keep going back and forth, but yeah, her chest isn't working for me. I'm resculpting it.

Hoooo boy. I am icarus. The sun looks really pretty today, doesn't it? The good news is that her calves are going to be easy to fit together. The bad news is that her thighs exist. One is longer than the other. I know this. That pales in comparison to the size difference (I guess I took off a lot of resin. I did this to me) So my new plan is to sculpt them together, and thicken the top of the lower thigh piece, and also sand down the upper until they are one. It looks bad right now, but I think I can make it look alright. I don't think I'm doing mobility thighs, because I want to focus on getting them to look like one thigh again, and that's easiest without more complications, I think.

My next order of business is getting all the leg bits to be the same size as the other leg, then test-measuring her. I think I'm going to finish her legs and then tackle her torso, but also, I kind of want to go work on her torso. I think the thighs are going to be okay, because short thighs should be thicker than long thighs anyway, and this body is really skinny, son little more thigh might be nice. I would never compare my work to Twigling's ever, because I admire hers just so much, but for an example of long versus short thighs, she has that going on with her taller bodies, where one of them is probably 3cm taller than the other, and that's about the difference I made. Also, worth mentioning, this character has scars all over, so that hides all sins, if some other step goes less than ideal. And sanding also may fix my hubris. Either way, I will make this girl work, because I possess a truly monumental drive to be stubborn.

    8. Oh your additive mods on the other thread look really good! So yeah, you shouldn't have any worries about redoing the bust here.

The thighs are surprising though - didn't realise how much they narrowed down. You cut them with the Dremel? I wussed out of that and used a razor saw and so much effort! I think you're right about building the thighs up to make them thicker, that will give the most natural look. Getting them the same length will take time but it's doable - just make sure when you're comparing them that you have them in the same position because they're an awkward shape and they're opposites.

I love that you seem to be simultaneously in the "what have I done??" phase and the Dremel hungry phase! I would say finish the legs first so you get the satisfaction of completing them. As fun as moving onto the torso would be, it can be disheartening when the whole project needs work. Unless you really want to play with the Dremel! You sound like you have the determination to make this work either way!

    9. @rubydoll I have the proportionate strength of about a 13 year old, so I love using tools that I don’t have to force, plus that resin is thick! There’s about a 1.5-2cm stringing channel and then that is solid, so the dremel was ideal! It still took more than half an hour to make the top cut on the first thigh, because I had to keep turning it, and then eventually snap the two tiny little bits of resin my blade couldn’t reach. The second cut was always easier, because I’d make relief cuts, to get chunks of resin out so I could keep on cutting without the stress on my blade.

As mentioned, it looked like a good idea on paper and then I got super carried away. I ordered some really fine sandpaper, so I can get the pieces evenly sized without having too much fun with mad science and dremel. That thing is too powerful, and it’s so easy to get carried away!

That’s a good point about comparisons! I think for that reason I’ll start with her calves, and unify those, because they’re less work and I can learn how to do it there, and then apply that on the big job on her thighs. All phantom of the opera jokes aside, I’m really enjoying this mod project, and I don’t feel overwhelmed, even with the sheer mayhem it’ll be. I ordered white milliput, because all I have is “white” apoxie that is definitely grey, and super white apoxie is super expensive. Amazon wanted $103 for the 1lb container, which is less that 4 lbs of regular white (granted, almost nowhere sells it in Canada, so amazon is usually the easiest).

for now, I’m going to work on getting the leg bits the same size until I have milliput, because you’re right, it’s demoralizing when everything needs a lot of work, and I’ll also be off doing mayhem on my Paladin girl, because I need to update that thread with my tomfoolery, but I’ve gotten supplies for her tail in, goofed up sealing her horns, and planned a new and improved wing design twice over, so she’ll keep me pretty busy until I have milliput! I’m so glad you like the way the sculpting turned out. I basically laid down a clay outline of what I was sculpting, and then built it up with more apoxie until it looked about right and smoothed it with a whole lot of water. It ended up being much easier than expected!

As always, thank you so much for all the advice!! I love having people active on my projects so I get to discuss them and get feedback!!!

    10. Haha, yeah, my arms ached so much after sawing through the April Story thighs! I'd put the cutting wheel on the Dremel then noped out of it! It's a great tool but I'm still a bit nervous - doesn't help that one of my cheap grinding stones disintegrated while I was using it - that was working on Milliput, the resin had been fine! So if you do dremel Milliput, go slow and give it a chance to cool off!

Good thinking starting with the calves, fingers crossed they go okay. If you're working white on white that should make it easier - I have some stubborn white marks where I'd wet the Milliput to smooth it and not noticed I'd left a little watery Milliput on the resin. So much easier to clean up before it sets!

I've been considering making wings and a tail for one or two of my dolls so thanks for your links in your other thread! I've ordered a Teddy bear armature for the tail and I've been giving my old umbrella a side eye XD and thanks to reading about your progress I did add some magnets to my April Story girl's hips - they haven't really helped much sadly so I probably should have used the time to put them in her thighs but the gapping wasn't so bad once I tightened her stringing so I might not bother.

I think one of the reasons I flit between projects is because there's no one to hold me accountable (unless you include the judgey stares of unfinished dolls) but reading your project journal is inspiring me to pick up where I've left off. I'm looking forward to your next update

    11. @rubydoll Disintegration sounds alarming! The cutting wheel I used wasn’t from my cheap off-brand dremel, it was a diamond blade from my dad’s good set, so that thing knew what it was doing better than I did ahaha. I intend to continue “borrowing” his tools for the job, because mine would totally do the same thing. I also started on a super low setting, and only turned up when I hit the point of no return, and I vaguely knew what I was doing.

I’ll definitely keep in mind that milliput can leave little stains. She’s pretty creamy by now, so I’d imagine it would be easily blushable/usable as a scar, but in case there are areas I really don’t want to be super white. I’m excited to try it, because I’ve used Apoxie a lot, but milliput is new to me and it’ll be cool to see what the differences are. Also to see how much I got for what I paid because the site was not clear on that at all, but alas.

oooo! I just got my tail parts, so I can’t wait to see how you do it as well. I also spontaneously decided I wanted more poseability with my wings, so I’m making umbrella wings for me at pride, and then buying action figure joints so my girl can actually curl her wings around herself.

I’m so glad my project journal Is inspiring you, because having your feedback is inspiring me to keep on working On my projects—even though that’s probably going to be like 4 projects all at once. I’m juggling that and a NaNoWriMo style writing event, and it gives me excuses to flit off and do things once I hit a point where I need to think about my next move. Dolls and WIP folders are both just so good at judging.

    12. @Chameleon yeah it was not fun! It does mean I make extra sure I wear goggles when working! But yay for dad's tool stash, may he continue to have everything you need.

The standard box of Milliput here is 15x4cm, 4oz/113.4g if that helps any. If you rinse your work under a tap once you're done that should help. My boy I was working on is pale yellow so I didn't notice until later - as I abandoned the mod I wondered what the white marks were later.

Still waiting for my parts so I'm currently in the daydreaming part of the project where everything is easy and possible. Action figure joints?? I was thinking I'd like my girl's wings to be foldable - partly for storage reasons - but I haven't figured that out yet. I have some Powertex fabric hardener that would probably make great static wings but unless I hang them from the ceiling I've nowhere to put them. Actually that's not a bad idea...

So many projects at once! Have to say I like to work that way too so you don't get bored working on the same thing and like you say, put a project on the back burner while you figure something out. You're making wings for yourself? That's awesome

I've made some progress myself but it's mostly sanding so it doesn't look much. My guy I sawed in half is now hopefully ready for the remaining crack around his middle to be filled. I sanded off some muscles and some grooves remain but they can be scars. He's a tan doll so he's faded where I've sanded so I am considering a quick dye dip to restore some colour - which will also be an experiment in how the Milliput takes the dye Vs the resin.

Hope all your projects are working out!

    13. Wow this is really coming along.
No lie though, whenever I see projects like yours which I consider to be pretty intense one of my first thoughts is "omg!" because of how expensive BJDs are (even used ones can be quite expensive!). I don't know that I'd have the fortitude to take a dremel to a bjd lol!
So I guess the point of this post is to applaud your bravery and skill in this matter! Oddly enough, I'm reminded of and episode of Bob Ross's the Joy of Painting where he had this amazing scenery painted and he wanted to add a tree and he goes "You just have to be brave- there!" And paints this giant black mark across the canvas- I think I about died lol! But then he made the tree and the like, and it turned out even better than before ahaha.
Anyroad, I really like watching the transformations happen and at the end, the results look great! So I look forward to what she'll look like when you're done with her! ^_^

    14. I'm a little amazed at how long this has sat in between updates, but here I am, with a little more progress. Initially, I had tried to sand everything for the next stage by hand, but that was.... tedious. Wet sanding for 2 hours is just a lot. And that was on one side of one piece. Time for my favourite power tool.

[IMG]Vidania saga: part 2 by Indifferent Red, on Flickr

Obligatory shot of me in my gear. Practice safe Dremel, friends. (Also shoutout to my gf for fixing my eyebrows before this take 2. Not planned, but very fortunate.)

[IMG]Vidania saga: part 2 by Indifferent Red, on Flickr

Some pieces were cut too far from the line, and not sandable, until I reduced them with a little more hack and slash. But we all know I enjoy that. Sidebar: when your mom asks you what you plan on doing today, and you say "hacking apart bodies", you know you're far gone when she doesn't react.

[IMG]Vidania saga: part 2 by Indifferent Red, on Flickr

Then everything got sanded smooth with my new favourite bit. That sander just eats resin, but it really helped. absolutely wonderful piece of equipment. watching it go through resin with a different musical this time--heathers. So when you finish all the work you'd technically planned, and then you hear Heather Chandler sing "And you know, you know, you know, this could be beautiful" you just have to go for it. It could be beautiful, she's right. which is why that pic is of a torso, and not a leg. I got ambitious.

[IMG]Vidania saga: part 2 by Indifferent Red, on Flickr

Back to our legularly--uh, regularly scheduled leg updates, the calves are going to be easy. I've reunited all my bits, and made them all the same size as their "twin". Here they are lined up into legs. and above them is.... thighs. I know I said thighs were going to be tricky, and I'm not wrong. I'm going to fuse the bits, and then both sand and sculpt, until I have two thighs I like. I'll probably make a to-scale drawing so I can figure out what her thighs are going to be like.

      "This could be beautiful..."

Heather made me do it. I just had to work on the torso. This was my outcome. Took two much off one side, but I can get her to fit her own body standing upright now. I had to slightly reposition the joint. again, bless my sander. I'll be using some milliput to perfect this joint.

Isn't she a little top-heavy now? and her chest looks normally-positioned, except for that massive ribcage before her waist, and then very tiny hips. I think I want a little broader hips, and I think I have to reduce her ribcage. It's just so long compared to the rest of that torso, and it's really skewing my perception of her waist, which seems very low. A safe option would honestly be to thicken the waist/hips area,, sand the "bump" put of the ribcage area, and move her waist up, while filling out her torso. That sounds reasonably safe. My other idea is to do all that, but also hack off the rib cage completely, to add a third joint in the torso, shorten the rib area, and probably also de-bump the rib cage for the waist relocation. I was trying to draw it on the picture, but it's not easy on a phone screen. The third joint would be right where I've drawn it in. I'll figure out if I want to edit the breasts themselves once her torso is more normal.

Next time on this journal: Leg fusion, and some sculpting bits together. Cussing out thighs, and measuring the legs total measurement once I'm done rough fusion, to know if I have to shorten the torso, or just resculpt it to my liking.

Last time we passed the point of no return. This time could be beautiful. Who knows what musical the next session of work on her will feature.

    15. The milliput came in, and it's not as much as I'd hoped--not cheaper than my Apoxie, but cheaper than super white apoxie. I'll wipe the "stains" of it off, as advised, because that sounds like a good idea.

As for the wings, I'll tag you over there when I start working on them! The action figure joints are...somewhere in the mail. Amazon alleges I'll have them sometime soonish? In the meantime, I'm working on this girl's weapon, which I started before this journal, or I'd have included it (I still will in pics), and a mask for another character, which I'm sculpting in Apoxie again. No rest for the wicked.

I'm glad to hear you're attaching that torso together soon! I can't wait to see how that turns out. And keep me updated on how milliput dyes!!

Welcome to my little project! This is definitely my first time doing anything this wild (and I got into the hobby in 2015). If you want to start somewhere, I strongly recommend resinsoul, mostly because if it goes wrong, you can email them, and they'll make you replacement parts pretty inexpensively. I am absolutely Bob Rossing the sanding, because wherever the Dremel slipped is now a happy little scar, I guess. Part of her backstory, anyway! I can't wait to keep showing everyone how she turns out, and hopefully providing some insight into how I've done it, other than the part where I'm winging most of it...

    16. Wow, I'm loving the ambition! The progress is looking good! She does look a bit top heavy now, I guess she's essentially pushing her bust forward now, rather than back, and her boobs do have a fair bit of volume to them! And yes, she's quite ribcage-y so smoothing her out will give her a better silhouette. Sketches are definitely a good idea so you know what you're aiming for, especially as you're working quite fast - in that you're using the Dremel rather than painstakingly sanding by hand (which I agree is tedious!).

My short burst of activity on my doll was brief, lol. I got distracted by other projects. Maybe I should take good top off and after a few days of being glared at I'll sort him out! But, yes, please do tag me when you start work on the wings! (Not that I've done anything with the armature I bought for a tail yet...)

Thanks for the update and good luck as you continue!

    17. I’m thinking I’ll print out the pic I had and sketch all over it a few times so I can share it here and get some feedback on it! I have this tendency to get blind to my own work after awhile! But I also think if I end up giving her a little more hips, I can get away with less sanding on the thighs, and make them more like the size of the top piece to stay in balance. I think the ribs might be a small enough mod that I could use sandpaper instead of my fast and furious dremel sanding (which takes off a lot when I turn up the speed...)

I hear you on the bursts of progress and then Nothing stages. I recently dyed a doll (still needs blushing/evening out), obtained new armature that I like better for a tail, and started brainstorming how I’m going to make it, roughly sculpted some weapons, and then only got around to this last night. Good luck to you as well in your projects!!

    18. So no fun modding has happened, but I've done a bit of a mockup. I think her shoulders are a bit too narrow, so I fixed that, and her hips, and moved her waist up with a debumping of the rib cage. I think this might make her proportions work a little better for the character. I also think it makes her a little less tiny. Like Vidania is canonically fairly thin, but I don't think she's this extreme. I want to mod her body to be a smidge more balanced, and the ribs and waist locations are a challenge for me right now.

    19. Your ambition is so admirable!! I think the latest mockup looks great and really does even out some of the proportion issues you had pointed out before.

      • x 2
    20. Thank you so much!!! I’m hoping the hips balance out the shorter but a little thicker thighs I’m going to get from the top piece of the thigh being so much bigger than the bottom.

    24. Thank you so much for your interest!!!! I also can’t wait to see what I do with her!

      • x 3
    25. With all the interest, I just had to do something I could update on! For the only part of this project journal so far that hasn't involved a Dremel, or listening to musicals (though, this time there was Buffy).

So I decided I was reattaching her shin bits, which were in 3 different parts. I started by dry-fitting, and I noticed that they didn't fit perfect (not perfectly flat surfaces, but that was okay, becasue I was fitting them by basically covering the smaller piece in milliput and then squishing them together. It might also have been helpful (for grip) that the pieces had all been sanded by the "god only knows what grit" sandpaper bit on my Dremel.

So I mixed a tiny bit of Milliput super white, and I got it nice and wet and sticky, and covered one of my flat surfaces...

[IMG]Vidania: pulling it together by Indifferent Red, on Flickr

Like that. Then I pushed them together, and pulled them apart. When I pulled them apart, I added milliput anywhere that was still smooth (ie: hadn't touched the other piece) and scraped any that got into the stringing channel.

then, I looked into it like this

[IMG]Vidania: pulling it together by Indifferent Red, on Flickr

And used basically a chopstick to push all the squeeze out to the sides, until there was no noticeable extra inside the channel. Then I did the other pieces, and used water to smooth it all out, ish. At this point, in the buffy episodes I was marathoning, Drusilla asked her lover, Spike "Do you love my insides? The parts you can't see?" And while he reassured her, eyeballs to entrails, I stared inside a leg, and hoped that maybe I could have a truce with it, at best. I love it when whatever I'm listening to is relevant.

[IMG]Vidania: pulling it together by Indifferent Red, on Flickr

you can see how much I used milliput to absolve me of my sins--one of them has a bunch of milliput in the gap to make it the same length as the other. I swore they were the same length when I was sanding, but I was off by a factor of a lot. Milliput is the hero we needed.

[IMG]Vidania: pulling it together by Indifferent Red, on Flickr

In my side-view, you can see how much work still needs to be done here. I'll sculpt the calf smooth, and then sand the milliput so it blends with the rest of the thigh, and looks like it's all one piece. Then I'll have to tackle the ankles--those I'm mostly going sand to get them harmonious, because sculpting them up to match would make the taper from calf to ankle a little too abrupt.

      • x 9
    26. Wow it's looking really good! Great job with the Milliput. Hopefully once it's all sanded out it will blend in quite nicely - out maybe a sort of marble effect. And you did well to fix the length issue. I approve of the Buffy background too

      • x 2
    27. Yay! Thanks for the update! ❤️

      • x 2
    28. So! I finally decided to make her calves back into actual cohesive limbs. Some takeaways: sand with a stick, or a block, but don’t grip the sandpaper in increasingly weird ways to try to make it sand. This gave me a blister. Also, as always, wet sanding is better unless you have an N95 mask.

[IMG]Vidania leg mods by Indifferent Red, on Flickr

Here you can see the legs, 85% done. I sanded, filled with more milliput, and then let them dry. The inside of one of them needs a bit more smoothing, and the last milliput needs some sanding, but they’re looking good!

[IMG]Vidania leg mods by Indifferent Red, on Flickr

I mean, look how much better that’s turning out!

Next, I did the same milliput on the inside strategy with her thighs, but I also built them up with some apoxie. I’d say they’re at maybe 40%!

[IMG]Vidania leg mods by Indifferent Red, on Flickr

That’s so much more thigh shaped. There was a 2+ cm size difference between pieces!

[IMG]Vidania leg mods by Indifferent Red, on Flickr

this one is going to need some work...

[IMG]Vidania leg mods by Indifferent Red, on Flickr

also started the joint rejointening, and that’s at about 60% on this joint. I’m going to let it harden and test the articulation.

Thank you so much!! I’m loving the marbling I’m getting so far. I’m also planning a Buffy-themed project soon!!

      You’re very welcome!!

    29. Looking good!! This is giving me hope that I'll get the confidence up to work on my project doll lmao.

    30. Thanks!! What’s your project doll?

      • x 3
    31. I got a Withdoll Dark Elf Angel second hand. Her faceup is peeling, she has a chipped ankle, and an acetone burn on one hand. I want her to be a hedge witch so I'm going to do scar blushing on her hand anyway, but I thought I might try some slight mods since she's already damaged and needs love.

      • x 2
    32. Ironically "make a scar out of it" is my go to for this mod project, and it's coming out cleanly enough that I might actually have to go back and carve in some scarring. but the colour differences between the miliput and her skin are all being used as healed over scar tissue.

Also! I love that sculpt! If she was 1/3, I'd have taken her home!

      • x 3
    33. Wow she's looking good! Congrats on the sanding and the shaping - they're looking really symmetrical - is that the right word? They match, that's what I mean. Ooh what's the Buffy project?

I love Withdoll! But sadly, or luckily for my wallet, I like their 1/4 dolls but I don't collect that size more than the 1/3 scale ones.

      • x 3
    34. She was my 3rd doll, I have 5 now but she's still unstrung and waiting for her fixing to be done. My first 2 were ResinSoul though so I had a moment of "oh shoot, I can't pose her with them!" because of the difference in head size. I have a weakness for elf girls though!! Plus I always "rescue" the not-quite-right stuffies so I couldy resist haha. I have one dragon stuffie that I found with my mom, he had one eye coming off and we knew I had to take him. I fixed up his eye so it stayed on, but we say he doesn't see so well out of that one so he's going to get a monocle and the other stuffies are careful to stand on his "good" side!

      • x 2
    35. you did an amazing job !

      • x 1
    36. Thank you so much!! I’m really excited at the amount of progress I’ve made so far. I might actually be painting her by August! The Buffy project was unexpected. I’m modding a feeple Sylvia sleeping vampire head into Dru in her Vamp face. I can’t bring myself to mod the OE head, but I want the fangs, so this is my compromise!

Also: ironically, another aesthetics project I have coming up is a 1/3 Withdoll body hybrid. No rest for the wicked.

I get that! I love project dolls in particular, because I get to enjoy the journey more so with them, and see how I can make them turn out. If they came in rough shape, then I can even say I fixed them up a little ahah! Your one eyed dragon sounds like an absolute treasure and I love his monocle!!

      Thank you!!!

    37. This is the point at which the project kind of shifts from legs to torso. As the last entry about legs, I think it’s fitting to hail this... the epileg.

yes, that was a bad pun. I’d apologize but I’m not actually sorry for it.

So today, while working on legs, I was listening through the musical episode of Buffy. By the time my dremel and I had reduced the apoxie to a tolerable height, and then my sand paper had smoothed it all, I’d reached the end of the episode.

Giles was right: the battle’s done, and we kind of won.

[IMG]Epi-leg by Indifferent Red, on Flickr

So we sound our victory cheer,

[IMG]Epi-leg by Indifferent Red, on Flickr

Where do we go from here?

As you can see, they’re smooth, but not even close to all one colour. I bought some sandable Tamiya acrylic that will be easy to match, level and coat in CA glue, as I’ve seen in this tutorial. I’ll just have to mix up a batch of yellowed resinsoul white.

Now, I didn’t stop there at all. I wanted broader hips, and by the gods, I was getting them.

[IMG]Epi-leg by Indifferent Red, on Flickr

This is 2 separate coats of apoxie/milliput later. The first one had a weird ridge that I forgot to photograph.

[IMG]Epi-leg by Indifferent Red, on Flickr

Then I decided, she was also getting a bit of a stomach. Entirely because I thought it would be cute. My poor father walked in on me, with my shirt rolled up, feeling mine, then adding to hers. It does go a little low right now, and her hipbones are gone now, which I might fix too.

For next update: I’m going to tackle her shoulders, probably hack a second joint into her chest, and probably resculpt her chest a bit, because I still don’t think it’s quite accurate to her character. I’m also going to sand her new stomach and butt so I can start smoothing them out.

    42. My projects are multiplying! The guy I cut in half got his sanding done but I need to cover the join to make it look like an actual scar. Planning to give him a quick dip in some dye because he's tan and it has lost some colour. However I also started sanding down a bust - same body you're working with, actually! However I lack your courage with the Dremel so the difference so far is pretty subtle!

[IMG]Nearly Barenaked Ladies by Rubydoll Chaos, on Flickr

I think I may go a bit smaller but I do try to take breaks when modding so I don't risk going too far! But sometimes that also means I forget what I was doing and have a dozen half-finished projects on the go!

    43. Your girls are all so pretty!! I can’t wait to see how the bust sanding turns out on your girl! I’m trying to talk myself out of another resinsoul mod, because I want another buff girl, and the body I have for her isn’t doing it for me right now. Also modding super saturated teal resin (matching old twigling resin) might be a little harder than my ws project... i should also post my third mod project journal (absurd hybrid project) because I’m starting to get slightly out of hand ahaha. When you finish the scar on your guy, I’d absolutely love to see how he turns out too!!

    44. Thanks! At the mo she kinda has Barbie boobs so even if I didn't go any further I think I'd need to at least draw on some nipples! She's so thin though my thinking was that realistically she'd have smaller breasts so I think I will go further.

Sanding and modding does tend to mess with the colour so the teal body may be trickier. In my head, dyeing something so it's the colour it already is mostly should mean the original colour stays the same and the uncoloured parts take the dye...if only! Definitely post your other projects - cheers me up to see someone else with a million ideas on the go! Cut in half guy is actually gonna be wearing a costume for Halloween that bares his chest so really now would be the time to finish that. We'll see!

    45. I believe in you (and cut in half guy!) we got an absolute deluge of snow recently, so I can’t dremel anything until I find a way to do that outside without freezing (which I’ll have to, because it’s not going to clear up completely until April-May ish).

At least, since I’d be buying her a new body, teal mod girl would probably be the same colour through, if RS makes her body!) that said, some of her mods are additive, so I’m going to be experimenting a little bit with methods of colour change for her. Before I decided she also needs muscles (a common thread here, apparently) I was supposed to dye a body for her, but it just didn’t look quite right.

That’s exactly where I’m at on this girl’s chest. Last time I was sculpting a chest, I had 4 other dolls and reference pictures sitting around too less so I could look at what I liked about theirs. Granted, that one was an additive mod, where I was sculpting boobs over pecs. Made for a fun explanation when my dad noticed I was surrounded in pictures of boobs. Vidania’s (my version of the resinsoul) are going to end up being fairly small, somewhere along the lines of the small bust Iple Hid woman, or a bit bigger than the small bust on AOD’s body. I’m already picking which dolls on hand might be the best references for that so I can start. I can’t wait to see how yours turn out!

It cheers me up too to see that we’ve both got so many projects. I have a couple more that I haven’t even mentioned yet, (Paladin- which is the other project journal, the hybrid girl I mentioned, and a really ambitious undertaking: getting an old iplehouse EID to be a functional doll) I can’t wait to see how yours are going!

    46. The Dremel creates so much dust and mess you really do need a specialised workspace to use it indoors. I've used mine in the garage - separate from the house and not frequently used - but it's so cold in there I've had to stop Dremelling because my fingers were so numb! Hope you find somewhere you can use yours!

I seem to keep going for really skinny girl bodies - got my eyes on a Dollzone one which I hope to get at some point. Although the Nobility Doll muscle body looks awesome! I just haven't got a character for her...but maybe if I give my brain some time...!

You mean your dad hasn't yet reached the point where he doesn't bat an eyelid at what you're doing?? You do end up doing some strange things in this hobby! I haven't done much in the way of additive mods. I do want to make pointy ears for one doll but I'm a bit too cautious to sculpt them straight on. I don't know why subtractive mods seem less daunting!

I have the small bust AoD too and I had got around that size in mind. Then when I undressed her they seemed less small than I remembered. Am I brave enough to go as far as almost flat chested on my Resinsoul girl? Or am I patient enough?

I've heard old Iplehouses are a pain to pose! I had to do a bit of work on my April Story body to get her to sit nicely. She's still not my best behaved girl but she's so much better than she was! I hope you're as successful, if not more so!

    47. The minute you mentioned dolls with flat chests, I thought of Twigling's A-bust. It is flat. Like doesn't make a bulge in tight clothing flat, and god, is it pretty. I've never seen another quite like it. looks so good dressed too!

Yeahhh, my dad is at a point of not knowing how I manage to surprise him, but being surprised. Mom wants to crochet clothes fro them, and accidentally got a whole look at the genitals I sculpted on my Paladin project (I experimented with going a smidge more realistic than typical) and went "bet you liked the research for that." Granted, this is the woman who made it her mission to learn what my type was when I came out, and hasn't let me live it down yet, so she is delighting in watching my mods, if only cause she knows about my weakness for muscles.

I'm ironically the opposite on modding. I have no fear of additive mods, but it took me awhile to get the nerve for subtractive mods. I'd love to one day do an eye opening mod on a fl sleeping head, but heads are a new level. If you aren't sure about additives, you can sculpt them on a layer of Saran Wrap, then glue them on. I'm doing that for a head, so I don't mess up her faceup!

As for bodies, I'm almost the opposite. I hoard either tiny thin bodies, or large girls, like iple and twigling. Nothing in the middle, it seems! I'll tag you in my project when I start it, but I basically have to redo his ankles, elbows and knees. the worst body, but he's perfect for his character. I'm told the nobility doll one is also terrible to pose, n o matter how much I'm in love with it. I'm told she's worse than the EID, but I love the way it looks, so I'm considering it anyway.

Right now the Dremel plan is space heater and a grow tent outside, so the dust is contained. My parents both park in the garage (as a freeloader, I park on the street) so that's currently a no-go. we have a shed I'm considering claiming too, but we shall see!

    48. For as daunting as the concept is, it's looking great so far! Building up the curves of a resinsoul body looks so nice considering how shapeless they are to begin with.

    49. My photos keep breaking (am I exceeding a data limit? Who knows?) but I’m going to do my best to update you all! If you click reply, all the images appear in the reply box, if that helps! Anyway, I got a bunch more done on her torso!

[IMG]Vidania: torso ordeal by Indifferent Red, on Flickr

I still have to smooth it out, and then even out her waist, but it’s looking good.

[IMG]Vidania: torso ordeal by Indifferent Red, on Flickr

She’s a smidge lumpy at the back, but I’m getting really close to considering these parts finished. You’ll also notice there is milliput everywhere—this isn’t as clean as the leg work was. I realized while I was working on her that she is a woman covered in burn scars, and having the texture from the milliput reduces the amount of work in doing later, so we’re doing this the lazy way. I’m never reselling her, so the mess isn’t a concern for me right now.

now, onto her shoulders. They’re really rough, but they’re wider now!

[IMG]Vidania: torso ordeal by Indifferent Red, on Flickr

I considered doing shoulder joints like my Twiglings, with the cups, for better mobility, but decided against it for this time, entirely because I want her done fast. Those need to be sanded, straightened out and then better fitted to her arms. I’m then going to make sure her arms aren’t too long, now that she’s lost 7cm of leg. And then comes reducing her chest. I really should do it by hand with sandpaper. But, we know me, and we know my dremel addiction. So we already know how much that isn’t happening. This character canonically probably has about a-cup breasts, and these are bigger than hers would be, so they’re getting sanded (and resculpted as needed). Once all that’s done, I think I’m actually done modding, and can move on to the Aesthetics portion of my project. And colour matching milliput, resin, and apoxie.

her head is also back with a more accurate faceup!

[IMG]Vidania’s new face! by Indifferent Red, on Flickr

this was done by an amazing friend of mine (who I’ll have to ask if I can tag, because they aren’t doing commissions right now, I’m just super lucky!) you can see her burn scar over her eyebrow there, which she’s usually going to have a wig covering (her character doesn’t talk about the fire incident).

      _________

thank you so much!! Initially I just found she was way thinner than I wanted (even though her character is tiny!) and now I’ve changed enough that I have to wonder if it would be on topic in the resinsoul chat, or if she’s become something else. That’s a philosophical debate for future me! I’m really glad you like the way she’s turning out! Best of luck with your mod too!!

    50. This is looking so good!! You say you’re being lazy, but what I, and others, see is beautiful work. I love seeing this progress, and am looking forward to seeing more!!

Also, I was curious. You mentioned how making the legs and waist shorter would make the arms be longer proportionately... I was wondering if before you fix the arms, you could post a picture for laughs. I’m extremely curious about how out of proportion it is!! :kitty1 Of course, you don’t have to

    51. If the arms turn out too long, I will 100% string her and take as many weird pics as I can!! I’m really glad you’re enjoying my work, and I’ll definitely try to be less hard on myself about the timeline here, though I’d really like to have the dremeling done before it snows!

    52. I just looked up the Twigling bust and wow you are not kidding! It's really petite and really pretty. After spending forever sanding my girl's bust for a second round and then being frustrated that her boobs still didn't look much smaller I finally plucked up the courage to get the Dremel out. I have not gone as far as the Twigling bust partly because I'm not that brave but also because it's cold in the garage and my back started to hurt because of the uncomfortable position of leaning over the tumble dryer. I say cold, it's probably ten degrees C here XD I am always surprised how controllable the Dremel is - if only I had a nice work area where I could work comfortably! So unless you're only going for a minimal reduction on her bust, I'd say go straight in with the Dremel - you've used it enough to have pretty good control, right? And with all the additive mods, if you have to add a bit too her bust it's no biggie!

Your parents sound awesome. Can we just clone them and hand them out to people whose own families suck? My mum doesn't really get my hobbies but did say she hoped my doll appreciated the dress I'd made her. It was for a Halloween costume and she was a handmaid from The Handmaid's Tale so that was fun to explain.

I always struggle getting Saran wrap to stay snug in place without getting too bulky, and still cover everything. Maybe I should try using smaller pieces rather than trying to work with a big sheet?

Loving the progress on her body and good idea working with the milliput and allowing it to stay uneven to get the effect you want. Her new faceup is gorgeous, kudos to the artist!

Her arms are pretty long anyway so they might look a bit out of proportion - my guy whose torso I shortened has long arms now but I kinda like the effect so I probably won't mod him further tho.

Think I might sand my girl a bit this afternoon so I'll try to remember to put up a photo - keep hitting my Flickr limit so I'm having to be selective! Good luck with your modding!

    53. I’m glad to hear the dremel worked out for you (though it sounds like your setup was pretty uncomfortable!) I’m done until I get to warmer weather, or make a setup for it. It snowed like crazy last night, and It’s -10 c out today (though I’m in the middle of the prairies, so it’s dry cold, which is so much less cold than humid cold). My plan though, when I can, is to dremel-sand her chest down and, like you say, build it back up if need be. I enjoyed sculpting my other girl’s boobs, so I know I won’t mind!

Honestly, my parents “adopt” a lot of my friends (in our 20’s) because my mom is furious that their parents aren’t supportive, so she will be. She’s the honourary mom of most of my friends, because a lot of their parents had really varying reactions when they came out. Family dinner is often me, mom, dad, my brother, and however many gays weren’t busy on Sunday.

I’m actually prepping for a paper on the Handmaid’s tale in class right now! We read it in a Canadian Lit class. I’m sure explaining that was an adventure (explaining the theory I’m dragging in for that paper got me banned from Victorian perverts with my aunt and cousins at the table). Some of the class also watched the show, but for some reason, watching it didn’t go super well for me?

Saran can be a pain for that... usually I use florist wire to fasten it down when I sculpt armour over it, but I do t know how well that would work with ears. Hmmm...

I’m so glad you like how her torso is coming out. I can’t wait to get my winter dremel lab set up, so I can get right back to it, and start in on her shoulders, and then mark out how much arm she has to lose. And yes! Her faceup artist is so talented, and we did a really cool trade where I gave her a body, and then she painted as many heads as she could in the summer, because she likes painting them anyway, and I have so many blank dolls. I can’t wait to go visit her again and learn to draft patterns and sew. I’ll definitely need to to clothe this girl.

I can’t wait to see how your girl turns out this afternoon! Best of luck sanding!!

    54. Well not too long to wait! She still has a few scuffs I'll need to buff out but my hands are wrecked from wet sanding and trying to use a razor blade as a carving tool so that'll have to wait for another day. I'm pretty pleased with how she's turned out. They're still not flat-chested level of small but I'm happy with them.

[IMG]Lucky That My Breasts Are Small and Humble by Rubydoll Chaos, on Flickr

No snow here but it's definitely a bit nippy out! At least sanding I can do inside in the warm with the telly on. Good luck with your winter Dremel lab - keep those extremities warm!

That's really sweet, it's lovely that you have an nice extended found family. It's always good to hear there are good people in the world who try to make things better for everyone!

I'm sure I must have seen a film version of The Handmaid's Tale but it was so long ago. I did start watching the series but it was very heavy going. I think I did oversimplify it in my explanation - said she's basically a sex slave to provide babies for the wealthy elite. Good luck with the paper!

Oh I hadn't thought about using wire to hold the wrap in place - usually I use elastic bands but they can be a pain. I have got some fine wire so it could help...

Are you planning to string her together to see how she's looking so far? I always get impatient when my dolls are in bits. Normally I string top to bottom but I did get a restringing tool which means I can just take the head and upper torso off and leave the legs strung so it's a bit easier to put back together.

Your girl might actually be a bit easier to dress off the peg if she's less skinny! So hard to find things which for Resinsoul girls - and boys for that matter! Making clothes is a lot of fun... When it goes well! I actually like working with fake leather because it's easy to cut out and no fraying!

    55. Alrightie! After the exam related radio silence, Here I am! Got blaring the soundtrack, broke out my Dremel, and learned that negative temperatures are not conducive to working outside. Anyway, listening to my own fan fiction being read to me was an experience. Siri reading latin made me laugh hard enough I dropped a Dremel bit.

And Vidania's butt is looking way more even. Butt/waist is at 90%, just needs a tiiiiny bit more symmetry toward the bottom there, but after Dremel sanding, then hand sanding, she's looking good.

[IMG]Dremel day by Indifferent Red, on Flickr

From the front, her stomach is done, and so cute. I love a little bit of tummy on her. I might have to do this to more of my dolls. it's so easy, but it's so cute. Despite the colour differences, the waist mods are a smooth line right now, so that's awesome. I just need to even out that butt and we're golden.

      Now, moving up. Literally.

[IMG]Dremel day by Indifferent Red, on Flickr

Her shoulders are getting there. they're not even, at all. They project different amounts. I've gotten it to sit flush with the rest of the body, where it connects though, but I need to smooth the bit under her armpit, and get them evened, and then fit for her arms. But I'd say they're at like 65%. Probably.

I've started roughing out a chest mod here. I've reduced her breasts by at least half a cm, and tried to give them a sort of natural shape. I need to smooth that out, clearly. my Dremel needs some more fine sanding bits, so I can rough that out, but I like the way they're starting to take shape. they might end up a little smaller yet. We'll see.

      side-profile is pretty nice!!!

So hopefully next time, I've evened her shoulders, and her chest a bit. Hopefully I've evened her butt a little more and finished that. We're almost done modding her, and then I can start colour matching her. and also see if I'm shrinking her arms. It'll be really cool to string her again, finally.

    56. Your sanding looks beautiful, on her chest. It looks like it was cast that way. As usual, your modding is looking great!

As for the sanding, yeah, I'm going to be doing a lot of that inside, rewatching buffy. again. I got some sanding film that wet sands well. Right now, instead of a lab, I have a pair of gloves (and a new project, just in case!)

Also, my paper is finally done! I wrote on Jezebels and handmaids as two sides of the same coin. I tried watching the series once, but I had what I jokingly call an allergic reaction--literally no content seems to affect me when I watch it, but for some reason, that did something, so as much as I'd like to watch it (because the book....doesn't have an ending) I'm giving myself a break from it. for a bit

I'm going to be stringing her reallyy soon, one I'm done with her chest and shoulders! I'm really excited to potentially be onto the aesthetics. I slightly hate restringing, so I'm prolonging it until I absolutely have to restring her, because I'll be taking her apart again to colour match her. She's not so bad to string because of her size though. I might need a restringing tool, finally...

She's hopefully going to be decently easy to dress. My mom is making her a cloak as one of my Christmas presents. I'll be testing out sd13 and the like on her to see what fits. I'm also going to be doing some work with fake leather (in another project journal, in which I'm making... 6 identical sets of armour. There will also be scale mail involved. So many projects, it's not a wonder it takes me a century to finish things.

    57. Happy 2021 y'all.

So, here I am, again, jamming out while I'm working. Picture me, wet/dry sanding film, and a yogurt container of water. I cut each piece into probably 1 inch squares, and went ham. My papers went think 220, 400, 600, 800, 1000 or something like that. It was whatever was in the pack of sanding film I'd bought. It got it smooth.

[IMG]Untitled by Indifferent Red, on Flickr

So here I've done one side with 220--you can see how pretty the sanded side looks, even after only the roughest grit. I was jamming to her playlist, and I found a cover of "passive" by a perfect circle, which is fitting.

I catch a brief reflection of what you could and might have been. I hear, while one side of her chest looks like it's just come out of a woodchipper, and the other side looks pretty.

[IMG]Untitled by Indifferent Red, on Flickr

And then that's what she ends up being. Still bigger than intended. I'd planned on reducing them a little more, but these came out smooth, and honestly, I'm Cool with them, after I tried some clothes on it to see how they looked

[IMG]Untitled by Indifferent Red, on Flickr

this looks normal-is for her. Again, it should be a bit smaller, but it looks about right?

[IMG]Untitled by Indifferent Red, on Flickr

      here it is sideways versus,

[IMG]Untitled by Indifferent Red, on Flickr

here it is! I think I'm going to accept ot as is. It's so smooth, and looks right clothed. You'll notice I also smoothed the shoulder areas (like going into the mods. I'll just have to even them up)

So next time: Evening shoulders, final touches on her butt and stomach, then sanding those, then I get to start filling gaps, and painting her to all one colour.

    58. I gotta wonder. With all the heavy mods you do, have you ever considered just sculpting a doll? I bet you'd do a good job.

    59. To be fair, I hadn’t considered that until I was redoing her lower torso, when it occurred to me that a lot of her sculpting is me. One of these days I’ll definitely hav a project journal for a body, though I don’t know how I’ll do at faces...

    60. Oof, I got super depressed and didn't do anything for like... Okay honestly, I was going to say 6 months but it was basically a year. Anyway... I had 6 months of updates to catch up on! It looks AMAZING!! Also:

Your parents sound so much like mine it's not even funny!! We also have a massive chosen family of foundlings.
