Update 4/2/08 - new heads, hands+casting - "Tier-in-Mir" - 60cm Humanimanoid Doll

Feb 26, 2007

    1. Holy Mother of Wow.

That's incredible! I'm... utterly amazed at what you've done since the last time I checked!!

THANKS for putting up all the pictures of the process!! I just could never picture it before and now it absolutely makes sense! finally! I am also now convinced that if I ever decide to make a doll on my own someone else is going to have to make the molds and do the casting ;) . I don't think I have the spatial coordination to do that. :)

    2. Wow. I just looked through this entire thread and it's really neat to see so many detailed steps. What really impresses me, though, is how beautifully those unusual legs work together.

    3. AMAZING! :o

I can't wait to see her finished! :whee:

    4. hell yea!!!! :D im so excited to see her in person!!! i cant whait to play with her!!! lol cuz u know i will.:) and im so excited to see u when u get home!!and omg that would be awsome to have u help me cast something.... like maybe parts of the dog doll that im working on... that if i get my ass in gear and work on it some more....:sweat but yea i so totaly want to watch/learn/assist you!!:) (sorry im just in a realy good mood at the moment, i just got home from this scolership thing and i won some money for school!!!!! YAY!!!!!!)

      Love ya,
      ~Kat

    5. Update May 20 - Cast the first test of the arm and there were air-bubble voids on both pieces... XD;; :doh Fixable tho thankfully. o_o (air bubble void is when the mold is made in such a way that when you pour the resin it traps some air cause it's a pocket where it's slightly tilted up. So it is not an actual defect in the mold, just in how it is designed.) I cut a small airvent for the lower arm, and the upper arm's mold can just be tilted a little to get out it's air bubble (it was not as bad). Next casts should hopefully be all fine.

All the same I played around with the junk casts and the arm poses nicely! :D Preparing all the parts after casting sucks (drill drill, cut of the cups.... etc). :barf I will remember to make the cup's connection to the piece smaller on future molds... XD Will make cleanup easier. I was just worried for the material to get in properly so I wanted to be safe than sorry.

And poured the second half of the torso molds today. Tomorrow I'll pour the plugs for them (to make them hollow and stuff.) Also tomorrow I gotta order more silicone. The gallon kit made it all the way through the upper body tho! :D (Body, arm, head, hands, tail assembly, and foot plate).

I also improved the locks on the ankle foot parts, by putting them farther back so it is not in the way of the ankle posing. :)

The pointy-hand mold has some major random little problems...like some pits and airbubble voids. Not toooo bad but like....not good enough that I'd sell any of those cast parts. I may just make a different left hand, one that is easier to cast *_* I will try making the mold for that hand again later (I still got the original), but right now to get this done in time for class I can't.

I'll post pics again soon hopefully if the next molds go good. :fangirl:

      ...

Thank you! X3 I've been working on like crazy in order for me to get it done by the final class (which is May 31).

No problem on the process pics! There will be more later. This week I'm casting the legs. It's really not THAT bad, it's a lot of steps and planning but I'm sure you could do it! :)

      Neither can I! :whee:

Thanks so much X33! I hope they allow her to stand. only time will tell.

    6. can you post pictures of how you cast the arm? Im curious how you keep the center hollow so the band can fit through.

    7. DoA member lolipop said she put a straw in he mold that you pull out of the resin after demolding (You cast it with notches to put the straw, filled in, not hollow of course, into the mold during casting). I was going to do this but opted for simplicity and left the notches of the joint / bumps showign where to drill, and then drilled the hole later (it's not such a big deal, resin drills easily, it's just more work). I'm handy with a dremel and a drill so it's cool. I'll post pics of it later definitly. :)

    8. Ooooh, straw technique.. It's not just for drinking with, kids! I've been using straws on my prototype sculpey doll for nice hollow limbs so I can do string & joint tests before I get too far along, but using them *in* the mold sounds like such a great, time-saving idea. :aheartbea

    9. I love those new legs, with the molded on fur and everything. Very cool. Can't wait to see the finished casts.

    10. I second the straws in the mold method. That is how I am making all of my own molds and it works wonderfully! :aheartbea

    11. I may still do it for the legs (as they would be a lot of drilling! *_* ) But drilling the arms is not bad at all. I need something thicker than a standard straw for the legs tho. Guess I'll need some bubble tea straws or something *laugh*!

You just leave a place to stick in the straw right? (when casting yout part, leave straw bits sticking out of each end), then put in a straw when you cast (+ mold release on it) and pull it out of the resin part? (then repeat?)You have to plug up the straw's ends with clay or something I'm guessing...you wouldn't want resin getting into it!

    12. I will try to get some pictures next time I cast since it is easier to show then tell lol :)

I sculpt my clay around a straw to begin with, then when I cast each clay piece, I make sure a straw is in place and cast it with the straw inside and sticking out about 1/2 in on each end, then after removing the original, there is a hole just right for a new straw to be inserted before casting in resin. I then just pull the straw out after the resin cures and it works perfectly. Even if you just use the straw hole as a guide for the drilling of a larger hollow, it is helpful for getting it straight ;) Oh, and I do plug the ends with a little clay, just to make sure they don't get any silicone or resin inside.

    13. Hardware stores also sell various types of plastic tubes. Some might be small enough for what you need.

    14. Awesome! Thank you! :D And I'd love pictures of course! I am still very curious.

Also a good idea! :) Thanks!

    15. wow sh'es amazing i wish i was talented at you at sculpting XD

    16. Lower arm STILL has some tiny air bubble void problems, but I shall defeat you trapepd air! XD The upper arm had just a TINY bubble second time around, next time I shall tilt some more and it will be gone I bet.

Torso molds are okays! X33 :) Upper torso looks beautiful, I is pleased. However, upon trying to pour the lower torso I discovered the pour spout was too small (Fixable tho, I just cut it a bigger for next time) and the resin just gloped everywhere, only filling 1/3 of the mold, leaving a very amusing paperweight XDD *LOL*! I must show all my friends or hang it on the wall.

      ...

Some pics from casting the arms / torso.

      ...

I laid her pieces out to check her preportioning and stuff. She looks good I think, I love her legs. :D She is more stocky (built) than most dolls, as I wanted since the start. Her legs are standard doll size and they may just look short cause of her shortened calfs / thighs from her long ankles.

Showing off the double knee and stuff. :

      ...

Legs will be finnished being made and will be cast this weekend. Then I got Sunday - Wed to clean up the pieces, drill, and paint /string her for class finals. XDD :barf Ohhh man I got a lot to do but I think I can do it! I better, I don't want to fail! *_*

    17. I love the joints on the legs! D: <3

      And...

Wow I don't know what to say about the 'paperweight' xD

    18. Wow! I just came to this thread! Amazing! What a beautiful doll! I LOVE the Tokala head! That is exactly what I have been looking for - for years! I know I definately would like to have a Tokala head, and a body if I can afford it! Please put me on your list for when/if you decide to make some to sell.

Heck! I'd even take an imperfect one! I've always wanted a "fox-person" doll/figure! (I'm a TMNT fan from long-ago, and they first got me interested in the Japanese mythology of the fox people!)

    19. LOL  !

Oh wonderful! :D I'd love for her to go to a loving home! I don't really have a 'list' but I think there are about 4 people including you who were seriously interested. I doubt I'll get more than 15 castings out of the molds before they start to die on me anyway, so that's good then. XD I'll invest in some higher quality silicone to cast her again sometime, but I do have other anthro doll projects I want to do...there is a little fox called Tier-in-Mir Zauberin (means 'fairy' or 'enchantress'). I got plans for ;)

The Tokala head, and other animals, are what I intended for the body, :) I just needed to do the human head for the project (I'm doing this as a final in Casting and Moldmaking class). So I'll be casting them this summer. Tokala is looking nicer since those pics, I fixed her symetry and eye wells, pics shall be posted when she is complete :fangirl: !

    20. It makes me think of Felicia in Darkstalkers ^^

    21. ^^ Ah, Darkstalkers! She does kinda' look like Felicia! Hee.

I'm so amazed by this thread every time I log on. I'd love to know if you decide to sell them as well, though I'm not sure if I'd have enough money by then. ;_; She is truly incredible, though!

    22. Thanks! I was thinking straws too but Im very curious to see how you do yours. The casting pictures are extremely helpful. I cant wait to see more pictures of the process!

    23. I love love love her, Lithe! If you offer these girls, please put me on the list. I would absolutely DIE to have one of these bodies in a white resin. Heck, if you didn't feel up to doing full sets (or if you had any 'rejected' bits laying around that didn't quite pass par for your class), I'd be interested in just her limbs! It's so great to see this project finally coming together, and I'm sure you'll be able to get her done in time for finals!

      Ganbareru!

    24. hehehe "paperweight" lol. thats funny.

shes looking awsome hun, im loveing her evean more!!!!!

      ~Kat

    25. you've made wonderful progress! good luck getting her done by finals!
any plans for a doll with unguligrade legs??? that would be a dream

    26. I keep hoping I'll have the money for her! I've never wanted a 1/3 doll till I saw yours. She's so awesome!!:kitty1

    27. Thanks, I'll need the luck! :whee: unguligrade, you mean like a horse? That would be neat. I more so had in mind to do some other quadruped dolls designs (could be like BJD 'pets' ) like my Jaquel but improved (but I really can’t post them here a they are now against the rules… >_> *will still mention them tho and post links at some point when I work on them*. I have a water dragon idea, and another dog dragon.

Oh wonderful! :D I'd be so happy!

I'll most likely only have a few to sell cause I doubt I'll get too many from my first set of molds (Maybe like 4-5 basic sets and 2 one-offs) , and I won't have them available till I get home for summer (I'll only have enough time to finish my one for class right now). I hope people know, as batchix says with her dolls, they are handmade without fancy equipment so they won't be perfect like a company doll, but they will be very unique and special! :D

If you are indeed interested in some of her 'junk' bits (dirty castings, casts with bubbles, etc) I could sell some to you for uber cheaps. :D lol!

That is very flattering, thank you! :fangirl: I'll be posting when I am taking down orders about who is interested so I'll look forward to seeing you around! :)

    28. Doing her legs has been such a pain, I HATE getting things symmetrical… XDD ARGGG well, tomorrow I start the molds for her left leg, which is all done, the right legs needs sanding and stuff still.

Something fun, designs for my little 10-12 inch anthrodoll I want to do. Tier-in-Mir ‘Zauberin’ (means “Soceresses” or “Fairy”):

And some pictures of other Fox-mask designs like Tokala but a bit different:

      [IMG][IMG][IMG]

And also, if you are interested, designs for 2 quadruped BJD animals, who are improvements on the design I did with Jaquel. I want to do a a dog dragon and a water creature, who will not be posted here due to them not being within guidelines, but I’ll post links to pics of them on my DA page when they are done/sculpted or wahtever so you can see.

    29. "you mean like horses"
mmm yess! i'd love to have a doll for the the little faun people i doodle and animate. :P

    30. I absolutely LOVE the look of those two quadruped designs you put up. They're delicious. And your little one is adorable, too. She looks like she'll be in a similar scale to Leeke tinies/YoSD, is that right? VERY cute. And those alternate fox-mask faces are great. I especially like that first one with the swirls on her cheeks.

Yes, I truly am interested in getting 'junk' bits. One of the things I really love doing with my dolls is modification, so it's good to have pieces around that I can work with. It would depend on what you have available, but if there's enough to make full limbs (heads, full hands, full arm with hand, full leg, or even a full limb set) I definitely want some! It would help you recoup some of your costs, too, before you start selling perfected dolls.

I'm mostly interested in limb bits and possibly heads, but if you have torso pieces I might be interested in some of those, too.

Please, if this is the case, drop me a PM about what reject bits you have, or let me know in this thread if that's easier, and we can discuss it!

    31. If you have any reject head casts as well, I'd love to talk to you about one through PM. (Maybe an upper torso bit, so I can make standard-sized heads? >.< )

I was also wondering, for someone considering casting as well, about how much resin would you say you are using, or would use, per whole doll? Because I am looking at clear casting resins (there's one I found that's uv resistant, non-yellowing, the whole kit and kaboodle) and a two-quart kit of this runs about $72, and to me, two quarts doesnt seem like much, but I might be grossly overestimating how much exactly is needed to make a doll.

    32. Arg just her legs to do....must finnish.... XD She is sitting on the couch, upper half strung up, with her cute purple/black tail and wig attached :D I'll take pics of that later when I got at least one leg done.

Eeee awesome! X3 I will send you a PM later about it then. :D

Wow that's EXPENSIVE resin. XDD The stuff I have is that much for 2 gallons! I guess the clear stuff is more. I want to use that for future dolls, I like the 'clear with dye' added look. But for now I'm not using it, as it's WAY more toxic and I don't want to deal with color mixing and stuff as I am just learning how to cast.

As for how much it takes, her head, not including the cap, takes about 3 ounces (the size of a kids paper cup), and her lower torso, her thickest part, takes about 20 ounces (almost two coke cans). I've gone through about a gallon of resin so far and I've cast 8 arms, two full heads, 8 hands, two upper torsos, a lower torso, mess-up half lower torso, and lots of other little bits (foot plates, knees, tail assembly, etc) as well as 6 kunai knifes (which take about 2 ounces each). You also waste some here and there, from spilling and overflow / the pour cup (just happens).

My GUESSTIMATE for mine is that a full doll will take about half a gallon.

    33. XP well that'd be two quarts a doll then, lol.
It probably is expensive but compared to the figures local places have been saying for casting something of this nature it's pretty cheap.

What brand of resin did you say you were using, though? It's from smooth-on, isnt it?
It kinda makes me wish I'd gotten more into this when my dad was still in the states, he can get buckets of smooth-on components from his work, for free. He had some sitting around the house, but it was grey epoxy, not what'd be considered 'normal' resin. (though it was still probably a good $80 of epoxy @_@)

I'm kind of lucky. My dad happened to be friends with someone who works in polymer engineering, making stuff for the military (as in, plastic that withstands tank shells) XD if it exists, he likely knows about it and how to get it (at a student/professor's price! :D )

    34. Nakie Dollie warning! XD

She poses quite nicely, and stands easily, even on one foot, and she's not even strung that tight! :D X3 (but my roomie has those pics on her camera, sorry XD; ). There is a locking mechanism in her ankle to allow for the stability. I am also happy that she sits up well, and doesn't lean backwards. Her thighs down't come as far up as I designed, but oh well...maybe I can fix that later. Her torso joint is great for swiviling sideways, she can't lean back with it really, but you can get her to stay leaning hunched over.

I love this shot, but it is not worksafe, so only click if that's cool with you: ----> http://www.geocities.com/the_fider/BJD/TierinMir_Nesha7.JPG

    37. I have to say, I am completely in awe. You have such an amazing talent! She looks incredible!

    38. I love her! Will you sell her/her body in any point? I'm broke atm, but good lord, she's such a lovely piece of art! I'm a sucker for animallegs. <3

      And I LOVE the paintjob!

    47. Wow, she's amazing! Congratulations. :)

    48. AWESOME!!!!!!!!! Congrats on her completion!

    49. WOW!
      she is very poseable!
It must be something realy difficult, to make her with all those articulations and make her pose well...
      Did you study something artistic??

    50. WOW! Congradulations! So what are your plan now?

    51. You have so many creations to be proud of, but this is definetly your best I've seen so far. You've provided a lot of good information for those who want to make their own BJDs, not to mention inspiration. I can't wait to see more of this new girl.

    52. She's absolutely astounding! I love the stylized stripes all over her. I absolutely cannot wait to see more! And, like everyone else, I think those feet are pure awesome.

    53. beautiful!!!:fangirl:

    54. WOW!! now that is something!! she's beautiful, you have a very impressive talent! :D

    55. oh wow! I didn't know you'd cast her! She's gorgeous!

oh! Did you know you can paint in acrylics on the inside of the molds and it'll stick to the resin? just a thought on her striping. It'll still scratch off, but it's MUCH more scratch resistant.

    56. Wow!!! She is REALLY beautiful.

    57. WOW. That is so cool! She's so posable!!! AWESOME!!!

So...when is that tiger coming along? :aheartbea

    58. Wow... just wow!

I can't get over the attack shot there at the end, though. It's so funny AND it does a great job of showing her off :D

      Congratulations!

    59. Wow, I must say - I love the work you've done. I would own one of these in a heart beat o_o And doubly so when you do the tiny thing! XD

*edit* Ducks, I didn't realize this was the doll you'd shown us on teh LoSt forum! *smacks head* Whups

    60. wooooooooooooow!!!!!! OH MAN!!! This gotta be the best handmade BJD I've ever seen!!! What an amazing project and kudos for ending up with a beautiful doll!!!!
Ha ha ha.....musta been so great to see her finally finished!
