Unoss Discussion Thread

Dec 8, 2009

    1. I now remember one of the resons I got Sienna over Aika, and is probably the only way to tell the two dolls apart (if they don't have their other things with them). Aika's eyebrows were darker than Sienna's. Ok, I know it is trivial....lol. But that was one of the reasons I got the blonde.

    2. I don't think it's trivial, I was curious if there was a slight difference to be able to tell them apart. I've started looking for original face-up photos.

    3. Gamekitty, I think you do have an Aika, indeed. She's gorgeous either way. :)

Wally, I threw on a spare wig I had around, but yes, she's sticking with green wigs. I've ordered her something a little fancier, just waiting on that slow boat from China, lol.

My girl seemed to have barely yellowed as well. She is a lovely, sort of pale shade of NS which is great because I usually prefer white skin dolls. :P Most of her seams were removed but the ones on her hands and feet are most obvious. I did have one question though...Her wrist AND elbows are glued together. This means I can't take her apart without cutting her strings. Are they all strung this way?

    4. The photo below is minimontoya's

The faceup looks to be original. It's exactly like my Sienna, except my girl has the blondish brown eyebrows. Here's an old photo of her with a tiny Kaye Wiggs doll.

This is my girl in her outfit.

You can't really tell it, but her eyebrows are more of a yellow brown not the red brown.

    5. minimontoya and oriscany: You have gorgeous girls! Love the original makeup!

VinylFaerie: I don't think that is supposed to happen. When I had to figure how to string my girl the ball joints are on the same body part but they are not glued together. Can you guess what kind of glue it is? Maybe you don't have to be so dramatic as to cut the strings to free her.

One thing that I noticed after I string my girl together is that it is missing one of the metal S for the head. I made do with some flower wire for now. Otherwise I would lose the body string. :/ That part is annoying. The springs on her eyes and her back head piece won't stay put either. I guess I might just use some eye putty or something.

    6. Gamekitty- Mine did not have an S-hook either. The elastic was simply looped over the hook behind her eyes. I think her elbows/wrists are super-glued. I can't get them apart and I don't want to break her. I am not afraid to mod a doll, but they are pretty well stuck on.

    7. Thank you for the comparison feedback on her, oriscany and lovely photo of your girl. She looks wonderful! Mine needs some careful cleaning so I'm hoping I can just dry-dust her gently. Did your girl come with blushed nipples or was blushing or the Satogaeri service available for them? Is she seam-sanded? When you mentioned 'destroyed' dolls, were any junked when Volks stopped selling them? I guess I am just hungry for news from someone who got one new at the time, since they are (to me) an iconic doll and too seldom talked about anymore and I love them <3

I'll be on the inevitable shoe hunt since as Quiet Queen noted, links are outdated, some companies long stopped making. im going to compare her feet to my Souldoll Zenith girls to see if they are anywhere similar. I'm wondering what in Dollheart girls attire she can wear too, an SD10/13 or Sd16 Fer, perhaps?
I've read the book translation here on DoA, and it's oddly touching and evocative to me. I got the book quite a while ago, then another one came with my doll.
I love the original makeup for what it is but really have seen some lovely repainted girls as well. I told myself that if I ever found one intact I wouldn't sand her but never dreamed I'd find one with face-up itself mostly intact. I cant wait to see yours painted, Gamekitty. The rest of you, (those who aren't, that is), why aren't yours in the UNOSS database thread to admire? :abambi:

The painting on my Aika (her name is Genki) looks very different from the U-noa that Mr Araki had painted and much more like old Volks faceups. I wonder how many prototypes of Unoss he ever painted himself?

    8. When I ordered my girl, body blushing was not an option. Volks did offer the sanding service, but I sanded the seams myself. Volks dolls come with very minimal parting lines, and all the gates have been nicely sanded.

Many of the Unoss dolls have been sold off in parts. Quite a few were modded and the "surgery" went badly.... Though, I have seen some beautifully done mods. And there are some really charming Frankenstein dolls. (I remember a lady in Japan made a Rock band using Unoss heads on several different bodies, and she displayed them at a Dolpa. They were wonderful. At the time I was so disappointed when Janne told me that Unoss didn't come in MSD. Somewhere I do have a copy of the photo that was taken at the Dolpa of those dolls.)

Araki Gentaro never did paint any of the Unoss to my knowledge.

    9. I assumed he painted, blushed and manicured the 2 in the book, since they look a lot different. I'm wondering why he signed this box, though, that was my line of thought. If they were released at the Dolpa just before though, this signature would have been later since it's dated '2000.12.10'

    10. Araki may have signed all the boxes. I just don't remember. I keep all boxes and shippers, but don't want to unearth the boxes at this time. The only Unoa boxes he signed were the ones that he painted, that much I do know.

    11. I did not see a signature on my box Oriscany.

Also, I'm waiting to put my girl in the DB till she has her proper wig/eyes.

    12. Hello all! I do not have a faceup for my Unoss yet (she will get one as soon as my friend is ready to do her), but how about some wigs pics? I can't decide which one I like more since I usually like brunettes more...

      [IMG] [IMG]

    13. My girl has yellowed a bit too, but very well. I've been sanding her seams and have only noticed a tiny color difference. My girl's elbow, wrist and thigh tops are all glued together with what looks like krazy glue. It doesn't affect me taking her apart or anything, for instance the elbow joint is just glued to the forearm.

Your girl is lovely, Luria! For shoes, those meant for Dollmore Model doll size fit Unoss, I have some canvas flats made by Dale Rae that fit perfectly. Lots of shoes are the right length (like SD13 boys' shoes), but Unoss have really wide feet too. I just purchased a pair damaged Unoss feet that I'm planning on sanding down to a more reasonable size so I can get Rumiko some cute girly shoes.

EDIT: I actually emailed Volks to ask if they had any idea how many Unoss were produced. They were very friendly, and said even if they did have records from 10 years ago easily available, they don't tend to publicly announce sales figures/number of items produced.

    14. Luria, your girl is really beautiful. When you showed the head I could tell she was going to be wonderful, but I wasn't sure if you had the body. I'm so glad that you do. ;)

    15. Luria, she's gorgeous! I'm very partial to pink hair.

Here's Rumiko sporting a new wig from an awesome friend of mine, plus a shot of work I'm doing separating her fingers and cleaning up the flash.

    16. Luria: Your girl is amazing! Love the pink wig.

Kate: I love your wig too! It reminds me of Lum. Very cool! :)

    17. That was my first thought! I did name her Rumiko after Rumiko Takahashi, after all. :) I can't wait to see your girl with a faceup. I'm digging the blonde wig on her.

    18. I can't wait either! My friend is kind of busy at the moment so I have to wait until she is done. Until then... I am just "dolling" her up, little by little ^.^

    19. Luria, that faceup is just stunning, I love it! The photo of your girl at home isn't showing up for me, and I'd love to see it!
Kate, I adore that blue wig, and Gamekitty, I hope to see your girl face-upped soon, although she is lovely blank!

My Unoss has been on a Shinydoll body for several years now, but today, I decided to move her to a Volks SD body. The hands are completely wrong, so I'll have to find a way to replace them with hands that are more along the lines of AL hand sculpts, but otherwise, I like having her on a "thicker" body again! Here's a quick pic of my girl!

    20. Wally, your unoss is gorgeous. I hope you can find the hands you want. I'm not sure if the Volks SD13 boy hands will fit or not. Imho, theyre really nice hands.

    21. Thanks oriscany! I don't have a Volks SD13 boy here, but one is on the way. If the hands will work, I can order some from the Volks USA site, so that might be an easy answer!

    22. Wally: I remember reading about an Unoss on a Shinydoll body. I didn't think it was your dolly but it got me really liking Shinydolls!

And thanks to Wally now I will also have a Siena's accessories coming! I am really looking forward to it!

In the meantime, I accidentally stumbled onto these eyes from Leekeworld of all places: new demon and robot eyes! It was sadly a preorder from a few months ago but I adore them so! I can't decide which one I like more...

      Demon eyes 16mm

Robot eyes (or eyes with gold gears on them), also 16mm

    23. ooooo! Gamekitty, I LOVE the robot eyes!!! They're awesome!
Shinydolls are the most poseable bodies I have seen, but I have become weary of fighting to find clothes for the "off-size", and wanted to put my 'Valentina' on a more normal size body for awhile. I love her on the Shiny body, but I'm enjoying pulling more things out of the closet that fit her for now!!

    24. Thanks Wally for the advice. I don't really know what exactly fits Unoss though. I heard stuff from dollfie dream fits them and I hear stuff from SD10 sometimes fit, but nothing really just for them.

The cyborg robot parts + wig has arrived! Bebe really likes it!

      • x 1
    25. Wow, she looks good in every color wig, Luria! Are her ears pierced or are the earrings glued on?

Gamekitty, I love those demon eyes. And yeah robot parts! Bebe looks rad.

I wiped Rumiko's faceup off so my friend could paint a new one, but underneath her makeup I discovered that her eyelash mod was really sloppily done, so I'm gonna have to fix it up before handing her over. I also bought some pink mohair pelt to make a wig with - I can't find any wigs that accommodate the robot parts that well, and I want my robot space princess to be able to wear her android parts, danggit.

    26. Yay, I can participate! This week I received my grail doll, Unoss Seina. She was a fullset with the Volks faceup... It's pretty horrid. :'D Some Japanese person propably just kept her in her box somewhere for the past decade, she's in absolutely mint condition. :aheartbea Too bad the faceups back then weren't that good so someday I need to clean her face and do a new one... But so far we'll go with this. I love her anyway. ;__; :aheartbea

    27. Yay! Congrats on getting your grail doll. What are your plans for her?

    28. Thanks! She was quite a find, I was looking for an Unoss for several years and then I finally got her!

Someday she'll have a faceup done by me and hopefully some pretty Mori-styled clothing. Her looks are pretty random at the moment, the eye color is the only thing I've decided so far. :3

    29. Can I post right after my own earlier post... My Kalla finally got a new faceup, it's not as well done as I could've but at least she's not on her original faceup anymore. :'D Those eyelashes Mr. Araki did are... very interesting to paint. =_=

    30. Having a little fun while I decide what to do with this adored girl! We took her to Glitchcon in her pink kitty set to display at the doll panel we presented, so I've gotten past the inhibition of taking her out. She's fun to carry and pose! She's loose, which is fine, so is my Lusis so I'm used to that.

I think I'd like to seam sand and blush her eventually but feel pretty strongly about keeping her faceup default. she is an Aika full set but we have the Seina things and then the pink kitty and black maid sets for her. I like the Seina outfit best.
Photo is a link to my little eye mechanism demo video with default eyes. :love

    31. [IMG]

Mine is FINALLY complete :) But I must do her faceup again as soon as possible. She is wearing Ardeur de l'Amour clothes, That's not perfect but it works well!

    32. I've had my Unoss head for some time, and had all but given up on finding a body for her. By chance, at the last local meet up, I found a super reasonable D.i.M body, and it actually suits her very nicely! So now that I have a complete doll, albeit a hybrid, I'm really excited about her again. I did an okay face up (not happy w/lips), and have been trying wigs, and eyes, and just playing. My head is missing the eye mech though, and I figured this may be the best place to ask if anyone has found a working replacement, or barring that, if I could get some good photos and measurements, my dad is willing to try crafting one from wood. I understand that they kinda made the eyes wonky, but I'd still like the option. :)

A couple pics, not the best, and she's wearing a diff wig now, but it demonstrates how the head works with the body.

    33. Limë, you girl's wig is fantastic.

Kim, the eye mech is really simple, you should definitely be able to make a replacement one. I think you could also use the little springs from inside retractable pens, if you're missing those as well. I'll PM you with pics/measurements later!

    34. Whee! Thank you Kate!!

    35. Could I see some profile pics without a wig and one without headcap

    36. Sure!

    37. Is the headcap supposed to have a matching indentation as the one at the back (the dot)

    38. Nope, there's nothing on the headcap.

    39. Alrite, good I recently got a seina and I wondered if that mark had a purpose

    40. Time to add more content to this thread! XD

So I finally have Bebe in the beauty spa. She should be home soon.

As for another Unoss... I found another one, but the poor girl is in a terrible shape! She had yellowed, sueded, and her eyebrows and eyelashes sanded off! She also had some dings on her foot. I am hoping I can restore her to her former glory. She is a Siena this time.

    41. Post some before and after pics when you're done!

    42. Ok LaPlaceDemon! You got it!

So... here is what I am starting with. This is her auction picture. I thought at first it is the lighting because she looks so yellow, but no... she arrived way more yellow than my oldest Unoa girl! Her faceup is terrible (now since removed) and more!

More of it will be in my flickr under Unoss Restoration.

    43. commented on flickr aswell but whattahell:aeyepop:

    44. Ya... I got my work cut out for me >.<

    45. Ok some good news other than restoring the other Unoss: So this is Bebe from my face up artist table. Isn't she cute? She even managed to make the default eyelashes work! I can't wait to see her in person!

As for the Unoss restoration project I got some apoxy sculpt coming in the mail now. It is supposed to come on my birthday. I think I will probably not do much work on her until I get the apoxy. It looks like there is a lot of sanding in the future!

      • x 1
    46. Gamekitty, I'm confused. The Unoss you just bought is really yellowed. How is the apoxy sculpt going to help that?
I really don't know how to reverse the yellowing of the resin. Volks' resin really does mellow, and it's a pretty candle light tone. (Not sure how it looks if it sits in the sun for a period of time.) From the photo you have, it looks as if the resin has yellowed unevenly. I'm sure washing your doll would help greatly and I do hope you can fix her so you're happy. I love the faceup on your other doll and yes the sculpted eyelashes look great.

Added: I bought my girl from Volks a long time ago. The clothing she came with was made out of white synthetic lycra, or something close to that. Anyhow, the material has lost most of its stretch and it's kind of sad looking, not the hawt outfit pictured in the book....lol.

    47. oriscany: Thanks for the comment on Bebe! I have 2 Unosses. Bebe is an unmodded girl that still wrapped in plastic when I got her. She spent her entire time in her original box. (I did say I am spoiled on my first Unoss!)

Well... if you looked at my photo album about her there are a few parts let's just say that are completely irreparable without the apoxy. Somehow the previous owners pried off the S hooks off her hands and then replace it with something weird that just came off with a xacto knife! The apoxy sculpt would help fixing the S hooks back into her hands. Also, the inside of her head looks like hell! It looked like the previous owners had superglued the eyes on her head and then pried it off with a screwdriver. The apoxy sculpt will stabilize the inside of the eye sockets so she can once again have at least a normal eye socket.

As for the yellowing it is actually even. I already cleaned off her quite a few times with alcohol/magic eraser and she still is pretty yellow. Her whole body looks like this in direct sunlight. This is a comparison shot between my unmodded girl and the new girl All of the new girl looks exactly like that shade:

To deyellow her I am going to try Oxiclean soak on her. I didn't do it yet because she is full of glue! That has to come off first.

    48. At least it's all even~ that should be helpful

Her faceup looks great thought~ I deff love the sculpted eyelashes

    49. Ok I got an update on my very yellow girl:

I had taken great steps in improving her outlook. At the moment, she is being deyellowed. I managed to get her head to match my 8 year old Unoa sist girl after a few days in oxiclean formula that has no chloride, bleach, and no scent/perfume. I will continue to deyellow her as much as possible so that the body and the head would match in resin color.

To see more pictures, you can go here. I got lots of pictures under Unoss restoration project.

So glad this girl is going to be better!

    50. I wonder if you asked Volks about the yellowing of the old resin what they'd say. In as much as they develope resins for so many of thier products, they might be able to give you an idea about a safe way to restore your girl.

You've done a great job and she's looking better.

    51. Thanks oriscany and captainkyo for your kind comments!

oriscany: No I did not ask Volks how to deyellow the resin. I am kind of just doing it through reading online. I probably should have but I don't think they would know any more really other than spray the doll with mr. super clear uv flat or something to prevent it from going in further.

    52. Fine grain sanding and bakingsoda usally does the trick ( afriend of mine turned her green doll wreck she bought in to a normalskin)

    53. LaPlaceDemon: I do have sandpaper up 12000 grain but I am holding sanding off for now since it seems to be working. If the body does not budge because it is more yellow than I would definitely reconsider!

    54. Great job so far Gamekitty! And awesome work your faceup artist has done with those lashes.

I'm bringing my girl to Dollism, and my friend just did a fantastic sparkly faceup on her, I love it so much. I have to paint the resin parts on her space bikini and robot visor thingy now :)

    55. Love unoss! Did they put anywhere in the description that it would be that yellow? Did you pay a lot or considerably less because of the condition? At least the eyelashes and brows weren't modded off

    56. Thanks Kate! The restoration continues!

Lazhielle: I have 2 Unosses: one of them is Unmodded and the other one is the yellow one being restored. There is no indication that she was yellow on the auction description. Actually I got the Unoss for her clothes. The fact she is there is a bonus. I did not pay very much for her as auctions go, but it was still not cheap.

I have more pics of her on the workshop journals under the name Unoss Restoration project. There are just too many pics to post to post on here, although I do send everyone updates when I have them.

    57. I just got a beautiful dress custom made for my Unoss. It is absolutely amazing with all the small details and aaah! I'm so happy about it! Now Kalla just needs a new faceup and she's finally what she's supposed to be!

    58. she is such a cutey!

    59. Giggy! She is lovely! Loving it!

Ok so I got far enough on my restoration project that I can show you some very awesome pictures with all what Siena, Aika, AND the elusive kitty set looks like on the Unoss that I am restoring. I got her to the color of new Unoa regular skin color, which is not the usual peachy color of Unoss but I like her that way.

    60. :( This thread has gone quiet again, but I have new pics for my Unoss!

So last night I got my Unoss restored enough for her to stand! After doing some more work she will be ready for painting and blushing. So looking forward to that! :D

I had done so many things that I just placed what I had done in this thread: Unoss Restoration Project/
