~~|Uncanny Dream Discussion - Seattle Doll Expo May 29th|~~

Mar 21, 2011

    1. I have some dolls, but am really a newbie. I like to see (and photograph, if you don't mind) as many dolls and face-ups and wardrobes as possible. So I hope to see lots of dolls. However, it would be great to have some way to identify the dolls in the ohotos - at propped up nametag?

    2. Oh I do hope this will be annual!! If it is, I'll be there next year!

    3. As far as contests go, my personal favorites are those of the photography kind XD

    4. I think it would be good to also separate the contest into categories like, "beginner", "intermediate", and "expert." I'm pretty new, and would love to enter my two dolls in the contest, but I don't think I would stand a chance against people who have been doing this for years.

I think this a great idea, but the rules need to be pretty clear. I am such a klutz that I can't do anything myself. I buy off-the shelf things and commission some pretty wonderful dolls, but I don't feel that I should be given a prize. I always give credit to the real artists any time I formally show a doll. But in the real world, your doll may have a face-up that you did but clothes that were commissioned and ears that were hot-glued on by someone else. In a big show, you could have umpteen categories of contests divided up by various criteria.

To keep it simple, how about simply Face-up, Photo, and Clothing? But what about a Challenge contest? At a certain time (2 hours? 2 days?) before the opening, you are given a theme. You have until the opening to complete your project. There are many variations on this that you can think of yourself. Sound fun?

    6. I haven't been able to make the outfit for my one doll yet :( I really hope i am able to make something for all 3 of my dolls in time for the meet! gotta make a trip to the fabric store this weekend.

    7. I'm definitely planning on coming! Hoping I'll be able to make something new for Bisou to wear, but I don't know that I'll have time to...either way, she and I will be there! :)

    8. I'm going to be attending also. I really hope we do name tags with DoA name on them too as there are a bunch of people coming whose names I recognize and would like to meet in person, in addition to meeting new folks that I'm not familiar with too.

My biggest dilemna is in deciding who to bring. I have Dollshe, EID's, Luts, Volks - it's going to be tough to pick just two or three to bring along.

    9. I'd probably worry about who to bring if it does become a yearly thing. Right now it's just me an Az.

    10. mysticaldolldreams- Wow, you have quite the choice to make! ^^ Of course, my suggestion would be Alessandro because of this ;)

      I agree, nametags would be awesome. Even getting the names of the locals near me has taken a while, so if we had DOA names and real ones, it would really help. ^^;

    11. LOL - I am thinking Alessandro may want to make an appearance. His facial hair and body blushing (and several pics from that story) were done by one of the exhibit artists, Christy, so it might be very fitting for him to make the trip with me. Although packing him around (superhero body) would be quite the chore!!!

Yes on real names and DoA name tags!! Look forward to meeting you.

    12. okay so if we want to sell things (I have a bunch of MSD and tiny props that need to go before I move) how does that work? Do we just price them, put them on a table and walk away? Or do we have to stay with the items? Never been to a trunk show or anything like that so have no clue

    13. I've never been to a trunk show either, but for a starter, how about this: each item is tagged with the price and name of the seller. Someone mans (or womans) the table, taking in money and making change. The catch is, nobody would want to do it, so as a sweetener the person gets 10% of the sale. In case of a high-ticket item, such as a doll, there would be a limit. Of course, different people could trade off.

Nothing of value should be left unattended at any time -- most of us are meeting face to face for the first time, and there may be people walking in off the street.

    14. generally at trunk shows, you stay with or close to the items that you are selling so as to handle any transactions on your items.

    15. I've updated the Uncanny Dream Website with a "Frequently Asked Questions." Many people seem to be unsure of the same things, so please read this over and see if it helps. I've tried to answer all the questions I've seen pop up over and over as concisely as possible.

We're also working on the contests. It will most likely be one contest for 60cm and larger, and one for 50cm and smaller. At this point it will be easiest to do them as "Full Package" contests (Faceup + Costume + Styling). We ask that you have done the majority of the customization yourself, but I don't want to get too bogged down in the background checking on this. (For example, if you did the faceup and bodyblushing, but have a bought/commissioned outfit that would be ok. Or if you made the outfit but have a commission or company faceup, that would be ok too.) Just use the honor code ;) The contests will be voted on by crowd participation.

    16. That is so cool! I wish there was something like that on this coast too!! It'd be so cool to see your Mr. Have and the others in person and in their dioramas!! I hope there's tons of pics for us all to see laters!!

    17. Very cool, I think I might make it. :3
I'll be the one in the corner who doesn't know anyone XD

    18. Flayrah, I'll be right next to you in that corner, as I don't know anyone either :D

    19. Anna, I'm glad I won't be the only one X3

    20. Less than three weeks away~ I'm getting really excited for this! X333

    21. Less than three weeks to go, indeed! :D

Good grief, I have so much to get done! :horror:

    22. I second this, currently making corsets,,,,,, then jeans, then shirts,,,, then?

    23. I hear ya Kiya....:o:?*_*

    24. He he, yes, I'm in full panic mode as well. And a few things I was counting on having ended up being sold out :?

    25. @_@ so much to do...

can't wait to see everyone at the show, though! :)

    26. All right you guys - no last minute nerves! You are spectacular artists and there is no way that your displays won't be devastatingly amazing. :D

    27. Exactly, you guys will be awesome and from what I've seen online, I'm so stoked to see what you do at the event! As for myself, I have no idea what my dolls will be wearing... >.>

    28. Sadly I just now stumbled onto this, and it's too late for me to arrange to get up there. I hope it goes really well and that you decide to do it again next year.

    29. I'm so excited for this! The wait is killing me! It'll also be my first bjd function so I have extra butterflies~ :0 I'm hoping to make a bunch of fur wigs to take with for the trunkshow too. :3

    30. I'm getting so excited for this :D Can't wait to see all the artists set-ups and what everyone brings :)

    31. Hehe~~
My doll is on shipping today so will probably make it in time for it!!

I keep looking at the calendar everyday even though I know when it is and the day's date xD
I can't wait to meet everybody!

    32. Wow, we have just over a week guys! So exciting (and a little nerve-wracking too!)
Congrats on your doll shipping Sorachi! Hopefully it gets here in time :D

I put up a few pictures on my flickr of what I'm working on, he he.

    33. I'm coming up with Reichiere and others :dance
Just thought I'd chime in to show interest :kitty2 Cant wait!

And I think name tags are a great idea.

    34. :aheartbeaOooooo CG, I am amazed at the sparklies and the tentacles, what a combo!!!! Can NOT wait to see what you come up with, it's always brilliant.:aheartbea

    35. It's crunch time, everyone! (Seriously...so not ready. I'm going to be working like crazy all this week.)

    36. I'm not either and I don't know when I will find the time to get everything ready

    37. *jumps in the boat with kiyakotari* i'm excited for the show as well, but sooooo not ready yet! this is gonna be fun!

    38. Hehe, he's here, but with no clothes xD
I'll have to buy some there so he won't be inappropro.

      Hang in there guys xD

    39. I would love something like this!

    40. Who are these masked men?

Find out a week from today at the show! Do they not look simply divine in their rabbit and steampunk masks? Be sure to make their acquaintance and look through their magic basket. You might find yourself wondering if they are real...... or merely an Uncanny Dream.

Candygears, the crystal flowers and sparkle are wonderful. Can't wait to see what you bring to this show! :D

    41. I am so excited, I can't wait. :celebrate We are moving this weekend so this is going to be the post-move treat! My mom is coming too, she is really excited also. She isn't into BJDs but she loves art and wants to see what people have made for their dollys :aheartbea

    42. Okay! All I have left to do is finish one doll and complete the walls of my set - oh, and I have to repair some damage my cat did to my furniture items in the fifteen seconds I left them unattended. She's got this weird obsession with biting wood. =_=

This is starting to look more doable!

    43. I'm done my outfit for my one doll I'm bringing. All I need now is rare earth magnets! I have 3 dolls but I'm lazy and I don't want to carry them all around so I'm just bringing my Bambi Crony tan Ellen!

    44. I have a questions for the locals. I just learned parking is free on Sundays in Seattle! W00t!

Soooo is there parking close to 619 Western Ave? And enough that I wouldn't have to park a coupel blocks away?

We were planning to take the light rail and walk the couple of blocks so we can stick to that plan....

    45. First time in WA, and very excited that my vacation overlayed with this! I am looking to meet some new people and be able to talk, as in the future might be living here. So very excited to meet everyone!

    46. I am so excited for this! I moved to Seattle relatively recently, so I don't know the BJD community here at all - I very much look forward to meeting everybody! Though, knowing how shy I am, I'll just be standing by the wall somewhere, observing lol

    47. Reichiere, there's a large parking lot just around the corner. It stretches for a couple blocks, so how far you would have to walk would just depend on what spaces are available at the time.

    48. I have one more straight jacket to sew--got one done and had another half way sewed when I realized I had cute it out wrong--ARGH. Should of known when things seemed to be going so well late last night--poo. Went to bed and will commence today. Started to pack though.....told Dh and the fam. that I will be gone all day so will have to fend for themselves. Looking forward to sunday!

    49. Thanks Jryus thats what I needed to know! :)

    50. I'm praying for rain, because if it's nice, Mr. polyhymnia and I will be morally obliged to spend the whole day hiking.

    51. Forecast for Seattle on Sunday high at 61 degrees and a chance of rain ;)

    52. I've been sewing mohair wigs like a madwoman and working on a super rad outfit for Zornon, my alien Orijean. I can't wait!

I am worried about parking though, there's a Yankee's VS the Mariners game this weekend.

    53. Hooray! That's promising ...

    54. FunnyLori the game isn't until 1:10 so hopefully we'll be fine....

    55. Ack, I didn't know about the game... maybe I'll just take the bus, then.

    56. But won't there be tailgaters? I'm having flashbacks to living in a college town during home games.

    57. I used to live in NYC and I remember what would happen during a Yankee game, like being stuck in traffic for hours :horror:

    58. No room for that downtown, I don't think, though it happens around Husky Stadium for UW games.

    59. It's ok.
It's not actually too crowded, and I've been downtown during games plenty.
You may get a little bit of traffic, but only enough back-up for maybe 15 minutes, tops, around the stadiums. And then regular downtown traffic adds some time~ but Pioneer Square isn't too close to the game either ^^'.
Though I think parking becomes a little harder.

    60. Hi everyone! As far as parking goes, you can usually find it underneath the Alaskan Way Viaduct (right behind the 619 Western location). The streets go 1st, Western, Alaskan Way, but between Western and Alaskan Way is a one way street that runs underneath the viaduct and is all public parking. Since its a one way, the best thing to do is head up to Jackson, and then drive along under the viaduct until you see parking. Even on gamedays, you can usually find something in that area, since most of the sports-fans park in the pay lots by the stadium. There is also a paylot right by the 619 Building.

For the people busing - the event location is only 3 blocks away from the Pioneer Square Tunnel Station - so any tunnel bus works. Or any of the buses that stop at 3rd and Columbia or 3rd and Yesler.

I'll have the final info about the contests up later :D
