~~|Uncanny Dream Discussion - Seattle Doll Expo May 29th|~~

Mar 21, 2011

    1. candygears, what are the (tentative I'm sure) hours going to be? And just to confirm, it's a one-day event on Sunday, correct?

    2. The official hours are from 12-6pm (but I'm sure we won't just boot everyone out a 6 o'clock flat if people are still hanging out...)
It is a one-day event - and over Memorial Day weekend, so there's plenty of neat stuff going on in Seattle if you're making the trek out and looking for other fun things to do :)

    3. Thanks candygears! It's more trying to figure out the logistics of a possible trip...it slipped my mind that this was Memorial Day weekend.

    4. This sounds like a wonderful event, perfect for a newb like myself! I don't travel to Seattle often but this would be worth it:)

    5. I'm really going to try to make it down, this sounds so epic! ^^ I told all the Vancouver peeps, so hopefully we can bring a decent crew as well. Is it just the people listed that are going to be setting up displays?

I really wish I could get my Williams in time, but at least there will be enough space to bring quite a few of the others!

    6. reaperofleaves - Yep, this time it will just be the 7 listed people doing displays. But we're also working on putting together a large photo area with dollie furniture and props that all attendees will be able to use, and there is lots of room to bring and setup dolls :D

Hopefully some of the Vancouverites can make it down! :)

    7. I hope there's a next year for this event...a limited release just ate my plane fare...

    8. reaperofleaves, candygears - I know that Dagger is coming down at least... =)

    9. Happy bump of getting a lot done on my diorama this past weekend! I'm so stoked for this event!

    10. I would like to attend.

    11. Awesome Seahawks71, hopefully we'll see ya there! (Its open to anyone who wants to attend :))

I think Clean Slate is getting pretty excited, she's been handing out flyers too!

    12. Hehe. I just CANNOT wait to go!
I'm wondering if I should wait until after the event to buy all of my boy's clothes online :o

    13. Of course, I'll be there! :D

    14. :aheartbea I love seeing Clean Slate in Mr. Have's coat. :aheartbea

    15. An event I can't miss~ The plans have been made, I'm coming too! 8D

    16. @ Revilis Yaaaaay!

Are you coming up for the weekend,or just the day?

    17. Kiyakotari- Agreed, the coat looks great on her as well! ^^

Already trying to choose which dolls to bring, I may be bad and truck 6 or so along with me... >,<

    18. I know what dolls I'll be hauling down with me. I mean, there will be my display pieces, of course, but I'm also going to bring a doll just to have one along that I don't have to leave in the display. And I know who it will be. ^___^ (If he's painted in time...)

    19. Thank you! I thought it was pretty awesome :D

Yay for being able to come Revilis! Bring some wigs to sell too!

      reaperofleaves
We'll have plenty of room for dollies! I'm working on putting together a cool photo-set that everyone will be able to use to (it sounds like the Olympia meetup group is gonna build one for us to use!)

    20. I'm coming!!! :D I can't wait! This looks so exciting! Now who should I bring? Hmm ....

Clean Slate in Mr. Have's coat. Wowowow!! :aheartbea

    21. Oh, I just saw a BJD for the first-time at the Sakura-Con.
I got all hot and sweaty for just one doll in the 4 meter radius around me. I probably seemed like a noob. They were a lot bigger than I thought!
I can only imagine how it would feel to be in a giant room of them with my own in my arms.

    22. At lot of dolls are quite large. Trust me, carrying around the Amber on Sunday (since we had already checked out and I am not leaving her in the car) was an exercise in stiff joints. I saw a couple MSDs around and one Yo-SD... oh and one puki-puki.

I forgot to get a post card for it. However, I am requesting the day off once I get a job. Hopefully it will all pan out. This is something that would make a perfect getaway for a day.

    23. We all start off as noobs sometime (and the SDs can be a lot bigger than you expect from pictures. If you do come out to Uncanny Dream you can see my 80cm Mecha Angel, and I'm sure a few EIDs will probably show up too, for some massive dolly overload...

I'll be posting an update in the next couple of days with some more local vendors that are participating too!

    24. I asked for the day off from work so I should be there just hope Grave's body gets here in time so far one month down for him:sigh

    25. I had a question, I checked out the site for the vendor mychildren.biz/ and I love their stuff ^^ but does anyone know what scale the furniture and gun/weapon props are? I'd love some SD and larger sized stuff mostly and I really hope that at least some of it is!

    26. I love mychildren.biz, and yes some of the stuff is big enough for SDs. I even found a chair big enough for my 70cm SSDF from them.

    27. I just got my doll stands in today for my diorama! Now to the fun part... the body blushings and faceups *dons respirator* lol

    28. The panels -- History of BJDs, Introduction to Ball-Jointed dolls, and one on more advanced stuff, like restringing, etc. were excellent and you could get up close and see what was going on -- not to mention the pleasure of meeting some of the people putting on ~X~ Uncanny Dream, if you haven't already.

The only negative was that there was so much amazing stuff going that you would have to be five people to see even a part of it. We had it worked out so that we could go to two doll panels and hit the Lolly Fashion Show in between, but the fashion show ran late, and wasn't nearly as good as what you could see outside the floor!

Big dolls? I had the thrill of seeing two life-sized dolls -- well, actually two humans cosplaying two of my dolls -- Hikaru (Angelic Layer) and Utena (Revolutionary Girl Utena)!

      ~Ranma~

    29. I've been feeling so badly about this...I hadn't met anyone previously, but I'll be honest, I didn't have the fun at the panels that I'd hoped I would, and I did find the people to be a little cliquish, so I wasn't as happy as I'd hoped I would be at the dolly events, and someone was actually quite rude to my sister, which made me quite sad. :(

At this point I'm looking into maybe going to Anime North, which is on the same weekend, rather than Uncanny Dreams, as I don't know if I'd have that same experience at the dioramas. It's the first time I had an experience quite like that at a dolly meet-up, and understand, if people who've known one another for years want to get together, I'm 100% cool on that, but I'm wanting to be there to share my joy of collecting, which definitely wasn't the vibe I actually experienced on Sunday, I felt like I wasn't welcome at all to be there.

      .hlp

    30. Oh noes, that is really too bad heidi! I know the people running the panels are friends, but I've never known them to be anything but inclusive. We have a lot of meets at Oasis, and the regulars are always super welcoming of new people (unless someone is mishandling a doll or something dramatic like that...)

I wasn't at SakuraCon so I can't chime in either way, but hopefully whatever happened to your sister was a fluke or misunderstanding? The next Seattle Oasis meetup is on May 8th, if you come out for that you'd run into most of the Seattle regulars again and it might give you a better idea if it is your cup of tea or not? I know I would love to have you come to Uncanny Dream, since we can squee over Soom Fairies together :D

    31. :sweat I would quite like to give it another go, as I'd really wanted to be a more regular part of a dollie community post-Fargo, so I would be delighted to try my hand at the Seattle Oasis meet-up. Aw, fairies, totally, I dream of my Haidi shipping by then, though she will just turn around and ask me if I've ordered Auber yet--which I will have done, sigh, I'm weak! It's so sad Midnitestar will be going home a couple of days before that, she'd wanted to meet as many dolly folk while she was here too, but I think we may be working on something informal.

      .hlp

    32. eep! i'm so sorry heidipay - especially if i was one of the rude ones! u_u i hope you can make it to uncanny dream or one of the upcoming local meets!

    33. I didn't really stay in the panel [Introduction to BJDs]. I felt a little out of the loop, so maybe about ten minutes? '~'
...I didn't know anybody in the room either.
Eh-- I seem to have missed out on a lot, both knowledge and seeing. OTL

Hopefully it'll be more comfortable at Uncanny Dream, because there will be more interaction between people and more noise. The panel was so quiet, I think I felt a little awkward. Of course, I suppose it's supposed to be quiet like that, though, Q&A x'D
There will always be some non-clique people and since Uncanny Dream seems like it'll be huge, there'll be many different types of people.

@Scarele: SOOM Amber? ...How much does she weigh, hooves and all? Goodness! Did you just carry her in your arms?
@candygears: I'm not sure if I'm mentally prepared for 80cm dolls. 60 and 70 were already very disconcerting (Ringdoll Teen&Ringdoll Grown. That's already taller than half of my height [still only about 5']!

    34. I'm looking forward to this!! I just have to still decide who I'm bringing since I'm limited to my suitcase lol.

    35. Sadly, Amidoji didn't not get this time off and is unlikely to find a way to get it off. This leaves Silvermare and myself without a ride and since the walk from Bellingham to Seattle is longer than either of us want... we likely aren't going.

EDIT Amidoji might have found a way to get the day off. We're waiting tentatively for the schedule revisions. Cross your fingers!!

    36. my only concern about all of this is the border wait... since it's a long weekend I can see it being nuts. over easter there was a 5 hour wait at the border last weekend. fingers crossed for quick boarder crossings!!!

    37. i wouldn't think that there would be as bad of a wait that weekend, haruko, since victoria day is the weekend prior and all of the traffic would be going in the opposite direction over memorial day weekend...

    38. The Friday afternoon meetup at Sakura-con wasn't very big, but it seemed like everyone was having fun. I'm sorry to hear that people had not-so-great experiences the other days, but let's keep the discussion in this thread focused on Uncanny Dream. If people want to talk about Sakura-con, please do it in the appropriate threads. Thanks!

    39. @ heidipay Sorry to dig this up, but I think this is important to say. I second what fenris said. That was not the goal of the panels at all! Hopefully we can improve for next year - and hope to see you at oasis meets and maybe Uncanny Dreams.

    40. Re: Heidi

I know what you mean. Even though I've been to a lot of meets and know several of the Seattle people, I still feel kind of.. awkward at meets like I don't really fit in. I guess a lot of it is because my dolly interests are kind of different than a lot of the group's? I'm not sure. And I disappeared for 9 months so now it's awkward again just because I fell out of the loop. :sweat I guess what I tend to not like about the meets is that, to me, I feel a lot of negative vibes because people are comparing themselves to others, their dolls to others, the value of their dolls to others, talking about the costs, the annoyances of 'other people' maybe on doa... This is just how it often feels to me. I am not a very materialistic person (it is weird for me to even be in this hobby at all) so when the meets feel very materialistic with not much grace, I don't feel very comfortable. That is, if the meet is all about the material items, the materialistic aspect of dolls, it doesn't interest me much. I wish meets were more about meeting people and exploring the characters of the dolls or playing games. I actually really enjoyed the few meets I had in hawaii because the dolls were used as an excuse to get together, so it ended up with our group going to eat lunch and go shopping with the dolls tagging along. I liked that!

The oasis meets are especially uninteresting to me because it is the same every time I have been. Same crowd, same dolls, same place... what brings me back? I think the meets would be better if they were not always at the same place, and had different focal points. Maybe getting together and going shopping at the mall or chinatown, or going somewhere like the park in good weather and playing some kind of game which includes the doll's characters. Like, maybe apples to apples, where the doll's character picks the cards. Maybe this excludes the people who don't give their doll's characters, but I don't think there are that many of those in this hobby. and if there are, they could play along anyway or not play the game or play as themselves with their dolly in their lap.

Anyway.. these are just ideas.. I get bored with meets very easily so..

I hope no one is offended by what I said :sweat these are just my feelings when I go to meets, and why I don't go much anymore.

That being said though, I'm really looking forward to this event!

    41. Hey can anyone recommend hotels close to where this taking place? If I bring a car full of people we need a room . :)

    42. This sounds amazing! I can't wait. I will do my best to be there for this.

    43. I personally like our regular meets, and try to attend when I can fit it into my schedule. There is something nice about just chatting with a cool group of people on a regular basis that share such a specific interest, and I love seeing everyone's dolls evolve and grow and new ones come in, etc. My favorite meetups are the trunk shows we have sometimes, because it combines the regular community with the fun aspect of actually being able to buy and sell BJD items in real life, instead of from little online pictures.

The original reason I wanted to have this event is because for me (and I think a few of us) what's missing from the Oasis meetups is that you can only creatively push them so far. The aspect of the hobby I love the most is customizing/creating/and photographing these dolls. When they're just in a random pile on a table in a bubble tea place, there's only so creative you can be with it. Especially after the first wave of Soom MDs started coming out and the doll companies branched out into crazy fantasy realms, it made it seem like there was a great opportunity for organizing a more creative kind of doll event. We have so many talented artists and customizers in the area that it seemed a shame not to showcase that aspect.

So that's my goal with Uncanny Dream - since I have the space to host something like this, it seemed like we should take advantage of it. Lets keep the energy about it positive, and just enjoy pretty dolls and each others' company!

    44. reichiere,
Hotel Max looks to still have some rooms available that weekend. And they are pretty close to where the expo will be. The ones that are any closer seem to be full that weekend already. You can try the Best Western, they're really close, but hardly any rooms seem to be available.

    45. Okay folks, chiming in here again, this time with my Moderator hat on.

This thread is for discussion of the Uncanny Dream event. If people want to discuss other meetups they have been to, and what they do and do not like about them, please do so in the appropriate threads.

      Oasis Meets Thread
      Sakura-Con 2011 Meetups Thread

Thank you for helping keep the discussion focused! :)

    46. Seattle is not a very large city, so any downtown hotel would be only 5 min. or less away. The Red Lion Hotel on 5th is great and very reasonable, and you can still walk to the event.

    47. I updated the main news post for Uncanny Dream with some more vendors and entertainment info.

What I wanted to ask you attendees though is, what else would you like at the event? So far we have the trunk show, the diorama displays to look at and photo, a large photography stage for everyone to use, and snacks. But would you like BJD info panels? Would you like a doll costume contest? Let me know and we'll work on fitting it in to make this even more fun :D

    48. I think contests would be a great idea no what kind don't know

    49. Thanks for the hotel info... unfortantly everything downtown was around 200. *_*

I think we're going to stay down by the airport and take the light rail into town.

If anyone needs a ride from the Tricities area, we're planning on going up Saturday morning and back home Sunday night. I'm waiting to hear back for sure if I'll have car space or not. We may also have a crash spot at our hotel too. :)

      I too vote for contests!

    50. I agree on the contests as well :)

    51. Will this be an annual event? I'm moving out that way the following weekend... sad for the timing, but happy if I'll have the opportunity to catch it next year.

    52. I'm interested in attending this, but have a couple of questions: is the meet-up for people who already own very accomplished, artistic dolls, or is it for anyone interested in bjds? And if it is open to anyone interested in bjds, are we allowed to bring our own dolls, even if they're not especially creative? I'm sorry if I seem dense, but I don't want to break any rules or do something really stupid if I end up going. :)

    53. I'm going and my dolls are quite avrage and plain >_> and my creativity is poor to boot.... From what I understand, the displays will be creative and artistic but one doesnt have to follow that theme to attend ^_^

    54. I really like the contest idea.

    55. Re contests: Okie, I'm willing to put one together, but what kind would you all like? Costume? Whole presentation package? Best Faceup?

@ cedarheart - Its basically a mini convention. So the 7 artists building displays are putting a whole thing together, but for everyone attending, you just do what you would for any regular meetup or con. Bring yourself, and your dolls, and dress up if you feel like it, and dress them up if you feel like it too :)

    56. That's what I was wondering -- if there was a theme attendees are supposed to adhere to! Sorry, I'm sick and my brain is mushy today, so I couldn't quite articulate that clearly. Thank you, Manami!

PS Don't worry, my dolls are plain, too. But it's fun to look at fancy dolls and get inspiration. :)

candygears -- sorry, I posted as you were posting so I didn't see your answer before. Thanks for the clarification! :)

    57. Ooooh.... This looks like so much fun ;n;
I'm going to be in Canada for a Choir trip that day, so I can't come....
      Hopefully nexy year, though.

    58. I agree, contests would be awesome. ^^ Maybe a photo contest, costume contest (and/or a doll and owner matching contest) and 'Whole presentation package' (not sure what that'd be, but it sounds awesome :)).

I was wondering if anything like a doll help/restoration station with help with things like restringing, chipped faceups and the like would be good. I'm not sure if it'd work for an event like this, but for people who need help with their dolls it may be a nice idea. (I know I hate my Drui's knees, but I think no amount of restringing could fix the way the body was made >.<)

I'm really excited by the new vendors added as well!! (and hope Devout Dolls brings some of the cloth dolls/animals)

Cedarheart- Pfft, your dolls are not plain! I love your ND Lucifer boy btw. ^^

    59. I think that a "whole package" presentation would be best. The attractiveness/matching of the costume to the doll/their eyes, face-up, wig and such. It doesn't mean it has to be fancy. Casual can beat those decked-out outfits. And maybe separate it into different sizes, so that it it'll be MSD size vs MSD size and SD size vs SD size?
