Udated! My finished bjd. (Full body resin)

Jul 26, 2005

    1. Hi Fairysquisher, I'm going to make another head or two that will go on this same body (maybe with some changes). After that I'm planning on making an edgier, higher fashion doll who is taller with a more mature face and body. Then after that I hope to make a toddler doll.

Once I receive the casted dolls, she'll be offered in a very small limited edition with some one-offs.

    2. Thank-you, Setsuna. She does sit and stand with no problem, but I hope that will be the same case once she's cast in resin since resin is heavier than the relatively light paperclay that she's made of right now...

    3. So beautiful! You did a crazy-awesome job!! Her legs are fantastic, they are my favorite part I think (but I do love all of her!).

Who is doing your casting? Is it a service or a friend? How much (if it’s a service) dod they charge?

The paper-clay can stand up to the stress of stringing? O_O woah! Pretty cool! XD

Again, simply lovely! I think she’d look cool cast in white resin (looking at her in white shown here).

    4. Whaou, she is gorgeous, really. Wonderfull work. I want one too!

    5. Oh wow, she's gorgeous! The sculpt looks so professional :D You did an amazing job!

    6. she is JUST WONDERFUL

congratulations on your beautiful girl after oh so long hard at work - simply amazing!

    7. wow. she is great. i can't wait to see her face up :) excellent job.

    8. I can't believe I missed seeing such wonderful work! She's just amazing! I certainly hope you can show more of her in the future...

      She is beyond :D

    9. :D I love her! Her faces looks a bit more like a traditional gofun doll (which I love)

:D SUPER NICE! Are you going to sell copies? *Puppy eyes*

    10. There should be a mailing list, of those interested in this lovely girl. Her sculpt is fine and delicate, and very beautiful. Congratulations, and :D for such a lovely bit of sculpting.

    11. W O W!! :o . That is so amazing, You did such e great job, she is so beautiful. If I was rich in money I whould so buy her. And she can stand on her own, thats so cool.
I´m so jealous I want to have my doll project finished too. ...and I´m even considering making a new one and that will take me forever to do... *_*

    12. There is a group and I'm sure Diep will keep us posted there :

      http://groups.yahoo.com/group/liebchen/

    13. WOW!!!! You did an a-MAZING job on this doll!!!!!! It puts the one I'm making to shame! There aren't enough exclamation points in the universe to describe my enthusiam for this doll!!!!!!!!

    14. OMG your doll is so beautiful!
I'm very impressed, you made a very great work! :D

The resin color is very pale, with a slight hint of rose tone as compared to some beauty whites that have a hint of yellow.

      :daisy

    17. She is quite lovely! The resin is beautiful and soft looking. I am eatten up with jealousy  ,but I wish you the best :D

      Nita

    18. she is looking great!

Im so glad that your having in her cast in resin, she is a beautiful sculpt!

    19. That color is gorgeous! It would almost be a shame to do a face-up on her. She's just perfect. When she does get a face-up, I hope it's done with a very light hand. She's just....beautiful.
      Fairysquisher

    20. Thank-you, Donn! I only wish I had the molding and casting skills that you do! I hope to take some lessons locally and then with a moldmaker and castmaker in Calif next yea, but in the meantime, I'm reading all that I can on it. It was very interesting to look at your tutorial, although I don't understand how to do that inside mold!.

    21. ... wow. Really, wow. I've been keeping my dolly wishlist down to 3 but... that's horribly tempting! She's so pretty!

    22. Oh, she is precious!!

She reminds me of a lovely little marzipan truffle. So adorable!

    23. She's so, so amazing. Her face reminds me of a young maiko, for some reason. I'd love to see her in kimono.

    24. once again-shes adorable. I can't wait the whole resin doll with make-up an wig :D

    25. She is so beautiful, I LOVE the color. You must be so proud, I can´t wait until she is finished! I wish you the best of luck with her ! :D

    26. :D she's beautiful!!!!

    27. Once you see how its done you'll be surprised how easy it is,.. "If your ever in Pittsburgh, I'd gladly show you my molds and how i made them".... Once you take a class you'll pick it up in a heatbeat, its just one of those silly things that unless you see it done right in front of you its hard to understand.

She looks soo lovely with the faceup and wig, Congratulations!!

    28. Are you serious??? You are right over there in Pittsburgh??? LOL, one of these days I'll take you up on the offer, as Pittsburgh is only 1.5-2 hrs away from us.

    29. Can you tell me how you made the hollow for the strings in the arms and legs and the body?

Did you sculpt the body and hollow out as you went? then put together the two parts which left the room for the string?

When you sent your doll to the mold maker did you send it in parts? so the bottom leg for example was in two parts? I saw your doll all together so I wondered how the mold maker made your doll.

Very interested! does the hands have a metal bar in them? how does the bar go in the hand after its already cast?

Hope you can help I love your doll very much!! you must be proud and amazed.

    30. Hi Lore,

I hollowed out the pieces as I went along. I don't think that I could have made it otherwise, as the hollows affect how the pieces fit together when I'm sculpting them. I sculpted everything exactly as the finished doll would look, so whenever there is a joint, the sculpt was jointed also.

For quotes, I just took photos of all of the pieces laid out, and also the entire doll strung up as she would be once done. It appears that both types of photos are important in order to receive an accurate quote.

Then, for sending, I just packed each piece individually really well and sent off! The hands and feet have metal screweyes that the stringing elastic passes through. I have no idea how the moldmaker is making the doll. I just know how to sculpt the doll, but from then on I leave it to the expert. I'll eventually take lessons as I'd like to handle the entire doll myself from start to finish, but for now I'm more than happy with the work that the moldmaker is doing. :daisy

    31. Oops, missed that question. I use mostly crochet hooks to sculpt. I like the little rounded yet pointy ends. They also have a little bit of a ledge at the ends, so when I push them into the limbs and pull out, they also take a bit of clay with them each time. So little by little I hollow out the limbs using the crochet hook.

Because Liebchen is not overly large, I use the smallest hooks.

    32. thanks for you reply!

I am still unsure though so you took the doll fully apart before you shipped her, so did you split up the legs, two pieces for the thigh and two for the calf and you shipped the leg in parts so it was like before you put together? I am guessing yes as I think the mold maker would need access to the hollow of each part.

Hope that makes sense! will you actually get back a mold that you can use to cast your own doll?

Oh from you answer to the hollowing it sounds like you didn't make them in parts you made them whole and then hollowed. did you ever cut them in two ?

    33. No, I sculpted exactly what the doll will look like when she's done. So the legs are the thigh piece and the lower leg piece. It sounds like you are talking about the mold pieces, which are difft from the sculpted pieces. I have no idea how the moldmaker makes the molds. He figures out how to reproduce the hollows that I have in all of the pieces, so that's his job. I literally have very little idea of how he does it. Maybe Donn might be able to help you.

I could receive the mold back if I ask for it, but I plan to have this moldmaker mold more and cast more dolls for me, so I'll just have him keep the molds. He'll just figure out how to make the molds from my sculpted piece, then once the molds are made he casts them and sends me the casted resin pieces.

From your question, I think that you are confusing 2 steps into one. You don't need to sculpt your pieces halves like you are talking about. A good moldmaker should be able to figure out how to create the hollows of each piece. That's not the job of the sculptor, unless you are the sculptor, moldmaker, and castmaker all in one. Sometimes I know that when you sculpt, you should watch out for difficult to mold/cast areas with undercuts, but as I don't know how to mold or cast I have no idea what would be "difficult to mold/cast" so I just make the doll exactly as I want her to be and let the moldmaker worry about making the molds and casts. That's why you choose a good moldmaker with a good reputation and pay a lot of $$. But if you are fortunate enough to know how to mold and cast, you save yourself a lot of money and have more control over the final product.

    34. WOW!! Damn!! thats cool.

NO WORRIES! it makes sense now!! amazing. So they figure out where the half lines are and they make a caste of each half. Then they somehow and this is the part that totally alludes me, they make the parts and via some miracle they have hollow centers!

Thank you I finally get it!

    35. I think my heart would pound right out of my chest if I ever made it to this point! Congratulations and much respect for having the talent and patience to complete a doll :)

    36. Yea, im not far from most of Ohio  There arent many people interested in this sort of thing ( making molds is dreadfully boring, lol ) so id be glad to show you how i do my molds/cores ect. Whenever you think you might be in town just give me a PM or better yet drop me a note through my site (i get my mail from my site several times a day).

      take care, :daisy

    38. she's so awesome! I'm so glad to see you got her into full resin!
Absolutely gorgeous and unique sculpt!!! Looks like she stands really well, does she pose other ways well too?

    39. fancyboots,

Congratulations on getting the full resin!!!!

Liebchen looks absolutely F A B U L O U S!!!!!! I just knew her resin was going to turn out gorgeous :-D And her delicate face-up is so creamy dreamy lovely. Love love love :-D

    40. Wow, I love how delicately she can caress the side of her face. She's just beautiful.

    41. Amazing!! after so many years you have your own doll that you made :D

The body looks excellent and love the posing ability, also the resin color is really beautiful.

Did you apply Gesso after you finished your doll with Premier clay?

    42. Yes, you have to coat the Premiere with something because it's so sensitive to water. I used thinned down gesso, coated her with about 3 layers, and sanded between each thin layer.

But you have to be careful....I found that once you put even one coat of gesso on, if you scratch or nick the sculpt or have to do anything that adds on more clay to repair, it's very difficult to get it to blend in perfectly w/ the already applied and sanded gesso. I had a repair from a scratch on her head that literally took me 2 days to make it blend in seamlessly.

I'd suggest not to gesso until you are very very sure that you are finished and won't have to make any changes, and be very careful once she's gessoed and during the gessoing so that you don't scratch or nick the pieces.

    43. she looks so...so...proffesional! I could see that sold in any store....=D *is inspired*

    44. I read on the news area you did a presale and she is sold out?

If not you might want to add there that she is available if you didn't already.

    45. :daisy Her eyes just kill me :daisy perfect faceup on her too.
      Fairysquisher

    46. Diep did a pre-order in the Liebchen Yahoo group and the pre-orders are now closed, but the rest of the edition (regular orders, not pre-orders), will be available later from Karin's site.

    47. *dies* That is soooooo cool! :love She is so beautiful! I've also just joined the Yahoo! group, even though I have *no money*... I had meant to make a doll so I could be cheap, but now I think I'm going to have to save up for a Liebchen. ::grumbles:: This is going to make me poor, these dolls. But I love them just the same!

By the way, how did you sculpt the joints? Or would that fall under the category of "trade secrets"? It's cool if it does, I'm just curious. The joints on Liebchen are so elegant looking!

EDIT: My bad, I never got around to editing this. I read through the whole thread again, and found the comments on joints that I had missed.

    48. I was wondering how much she sold for during the pre-sale, and how much she might be selling for in the future (whenever she is released)?

    49. May I inquire as to who you moldmaker is? Or how to contact him? :chibi

    50. Me too would like to know

fancyboots you did a great job, she is beautiful!!

    51. :D she is amazing!!!!!!!!!! i'd love to see more of your work, she has to be by far the best home made bjd! :D

    52. ^_____^ I bet she'll be absolutely gorgeous when she's done. Are you going to sell dolls of her once she is casted? *sighs* I would like to see her in person. I think I'd love to have one of my own haha

    53. p.s. will you be making any other dolls after her?

    54. Thanks to Biscuitbear to introduce us you so beautiful BJD

    55. wow, she's ADORABLE!! (and what a cute bum!) you really did an excellent job! she's so delicate and sweet. i'd love to see more pictures of her!

    56. oh my god... :o absolutely beautiful it's incredible how you went from those first, rough, lumpy images to the beautiful, professional, smooth, smooth, smooth final product. she's so pretty. congratulations. :daisy

    57. she's so elegant looking ^_^

    58. Hi Fancy, your Liebchen is very very wonderfull, she's so delicate.
What you have used for coat the Premiere before Gesso?
