Udated! My finished bjd. (Full body resin)

Jul 26, 2005

    1. Hello,

I've recently started working on this bjd, and am almost finished with her. I just discovered this artist bjd section here, and was very interested to see that so many are making their own dolls!

I hope that you will enjoy meeting my Liebchen. She is still in rough stages, as you can see that her clay is still bumpy. I apologise that the photos are so dark, but these were taken in the middle of the night and I only have one small lamp at my table.

    2. Congratulations on a beautiful job!

    3. o wow. your doll is looking really good so far. can't wait to see her when she is done

    4. YaY! Ohio! Great progress photos! (the first two didn't come thru)

    5. ooooo amazingly done! How big is she? She seems like an msd sized doll from the pictures XD

I love the face she has currrently, it's somewhat asian looking like a soah, but i love how you sculpted her body, specially the way the leg joins with the body :) very nicely done... i can't wait to see her painted and finished, it's lovely!

How long have you been making her?

    6. Ahhh, she looks lovely~ <3

    7. Oh wonderful! :o She is very shapely for such a young little thing! The feet are just awesome! Those are always hard to do. :barf

Keep on going, you're doing great :D !

What material are you using? And will you be making resin casts or keeping her as she is and paint her?

    8. I've been working on her for about a month. Hopefully, she will be finished soon but I keep finding little things to correct along the way. She's 38cm so far...

    9. Wow... what a beautiful little creature. I can't wait to see what she looks like finished! Her leg sculpt is gorgeous - I especially love the way you've sculpted her knee joins and her upper thighs. Even in this rougher stage, I can see she's going to have gorgeous muscle definition.

I wish I could sculpt like you! :)

    10. How utterly gorgeous!! I can't wait to see how she turns out :)

(hint, hint -- you should cast her! hint, hint *grin*)

      -- Andi <3

    11. Yes, I'm going to have her molded and cast for me! :daisy

    12. Oooh, she's so gorgeous! I love her Asian features and graceful hips. ^^ Very appealing not to have the hugely visible joints there like most BJDs do.
Can't wait to see the finished product!

    13. wow that's fabulous! I'm jealous- i'm so busy moving i haven't had time to sculpt! what material are you using to sculpt her? do you have a core or is it all by hand?

    14. I'm using the red label Premiere airdry clay. There are no cores, I've been sculpting the pieces entirely w/ the airdry clay.

    15. you're awfully talented with this, i really love how you did her face :)
When she's casted and all done, i really can't wait to see how she looks hehe. Will you be making more in the future?

    16. Thank-you!

I'm going to cast her as a limited edition--I have to find out from my moldmaker how many castings that he can do. Then, I'd like to make a couple of heads that can interchange on the same body. After that, I'd like to make a bigger, more grownup doll.

    17. Really and truely great job on her. I can imagine its a challenge to make the paperclay behave itself. Even with the lumpiness can tell she is going to look cool.
Beautiful pouty face and her body joints look good so far.
Did you use one of the online japanese tuts for building her?

      Nita

    18. Thank-you, Nita! This paperclay is the redlabel Premiere---it is a fabulous clay and very easy to work with!

This is the tutorial that I used. I think that it tells you all that you need to know to sculpt:

      http://www.lewisgoldsteinartanddesign.com/DollTutorialFS.htm

    19. She is so pretty, lovely work. I´m excited to see her finished!!

    20. Ive tried LAdoll but, never either of the Premire products. The LA doll cracks as it dries and was kinda lumpy to work with. Ive heard good things about Premire though.
I guess I will have to try some.

    21. I can't recommend this Premiere enough---I really love it. I haven't tried LaDoll or the other formulation of Premiere, just this red label one. It's very smooth. It does have shrinkage when it dries, but if you keep that in mind it's not really a problem. There can sometimes be cracking along thin edges if they are manipulated while the clay is drying, but I just mix up some pasty clay & smooth into the cracks. It's super easy to use.

I had previously used a cheaper paperclay called "Knead-O", but it wasn't as easy to use as this one and it dried about 40% heavier. The one advantage that it had was that it had negligible shrinkage. :daisy

    22. Right now I am using prosculpt and its turning out to be not quite as seamless as Id like.
it shrinks ever so slightly once cured making the joints a bit tighter than I had in mind also when heated the clay distorts and sags !

Im considering moving on to Chavant for the body or maybe my next peice, but also I want to try out some of the online turorials that are in airdry types of clay.
I was looking at doll protypes at dolltown and looked like they were done in paperclay of somesort.I think it would be a good media because the doll could easily be gessoed for a fine finish.
Thanks for the recommendation. Im going to order some

    23. yer doing a wonderful job!!! please keep up posted!

    24. It's coming out great! Defenitly do post more pics and updates!

    25. Thank-you, Dette! Here are the latest photos. I have the second leg well-roughed in, but it needs refining. I hope to be able to start on her arms tonight. :daisy

    27. I love her face - she's shaping up to be a beautiful doll :daisy

    28. Oh man! She looks great and is progressing fairly quickly for you.The joints look really good. What are you using for the balls of the joints?

      Nita

    29. Oh, she looks even more beautiful in these latest shots. I love her face and her legs!

May I ask -- did you make the legs in two parts, or start with them in one part and then added the joints?

    30. Hi Nita, I just roll the Premiere into a ball the size that I need. I don't use anything else other than the Premiere to make the entire doll. I have clay tools, but I don't use anything inside of the clay.

    31. I make a rough roll for the leg, then roll a ball for the size of the joint that I need. I wet the leg roll and the ball, mix up some paperclay into a paste, "glue" the 2 shapes together, and then just start adding clay to wherever it needs filling out and smoothing away whatever needs narrowing.

I find that it's more accurate to make the joint ball separate from the leg at first, because when I make the shape as one it tends to not be as accurate.

    32. Hmm. Thank you for sharing. I should have done something simple like that. I tried using marbles which I added a layer of clay to cut them open and then applied the parts to the ends of limbs. I t worked but was not as perfectly round as I thought.

      Nita

    33. It's coming along so nicely! really, it's a beautiful sculpt! looks like a professioinal piece in the works!

    34. :o awsome job! I want one! ^_^

I always thought it would be cool to make my own doll... where did you get the clay you use?

    35. You can get it, and other clays, here:

      http://www.miniworlddolls.com/CSClays2.htm

    36. which one did you use?

    37. awesome! and you are here in ohio! good work!

    38. i love her body!!! the head's cute great too but there's something about the shape of the body and how it all works together that rather takes my breath away!

    39. ooooh, nice work so far! you are a superior sculpt artist!
the body reminds me a lot of sharmin or unoa, sort of. mainly the legs reminds me of sharmin. (i hope that didn't come out accusative *_* )

    40. I have silly questions...
how well does she sit? it doesn;t look like she has enough room for her hips to move (no offense, simple curiouslty) how are you attaching the headcap, and how are you attachign the hands and feet to the elastic?

    41. She sits really well---she's sitting in the photos on the first page. I have her other leg all finished, as well as an arm & her hands. She's unstrung right now, so I can't take any more sitting photos, but she has no problems sitting. You don't even have to fidget to make her sit, just bend & set her down & she stays. Her legs even go sideways so that she can sit cross legged.

I'll make the headcap w/ a notch that goes under the front lip inside of the head, as well as a ball that will sit down in the head. The hands and feet have screw eyes to pass the elastic through.

    42. ah, okay, I see how you did the hips ^^
screw eyes are a good idea. thank you for answering!

    43. I LOVE her face its incredibly cute, she looks wonderfull!

    44. im extremely impressed with your work! very very nice!!!! i cannot wait to see her all done and possibly casted since you talked about doing that

    45. Absolutly beautiful!

You have such talent ^^ I love it!

She's really cool ^^ Will you be putting her on sale or is she a personal doll? ^^

    46. Hi, it's been awhile, but I finally finished my bjd. Here are some of her pics. She's roughly 15 1/8" (38cm) tall. Hope you like her! :daisy

    47. damn. daaaaamn

    48. OMG she's beautiful.... (I want one...........) I absolutely love her face sculpt, and she's so graceful...

    49. GAH! She's abolutely gorgeous!! Wonderful job! I agree with Iroha, I totally want one.

    50. Thank-you! You don't know what a HUGE compliment that is!!!

Actually, I'm having her cast for me in a limited edition, so she will be available in the very near future! She'll even come with glass eyes, wig, and an outfit! I'm very excited about this.

    51. She is ....incredible... your work is equal to the BEST doll sculpts out there. You need to really consider making a mold and then making a limited run. She would sell so quickly. Wow. Major kudos to you!!!!! Are you planning on making any other dolls? Not just copies of this one, but entirely new sculpts? Wow. I mean it. Wow.
      Fairysquisher

    52. your doll is really amazing. I'm studing on the art academy and I can tell for sure, that you did a great job. I was planning to make my BJD also, but I have problems with materials here in Poland. anyway- I would love to have your girl in my collection. she's one of the most adorable I've ever see :D
      congrats!
can I ask you, how long it took to make her?

    53. Wow! <3

    54. omg... that is AMAZING... I agree with fairysquisher... your work is definitly equal to the sculpters work at Volks/CP/any other BJD company. And you even made it out of a fairly difficult medium! Absolutely incredible...

    55. She's stunning. Ethereal, graceful, and it tickles me that she can stand on her own! What a fabulous job -- congratulations!

    56. My word, what a lovely doll.

And she stands on her own, sits beautifully & straight upright, wonderful hands, graceful feet (especially when she's sitting).

Wow. Ok, so everyone else has said it, too, but just Wow.

I look forward also to seeing her face painted & wigged.

Congrats on great finish to your hard work.

Looking forward to some pictures of her painted and wigged, like everyone else . . . wow, I want to bring her home with me!!
