Twigling Doll Discussion ~ Part 3

Jul 31, 2015

    1. I know that plenty of people have found jointed hands that work with their twiglings, but has anyone found some that match or are a close-ish match to the vivid resin?

    2. Haru vivid or DCS vivid? They appear quite different in the couple photos I’ve seen of new (dcs) vivid compared to my older vivid doll.

    3. The DCS vivid; I just got her new from Twigling this year.

    4. Nice! I don’t have a vivid head yet, but I’m ordering one soon. Visually, it looks like a light, warmer tan, so I’m thinking it might match some batches of Soom tawny (I’m really hoping to match that, at least). I think DFH makes jointed hands too, and if so, they do custom colours.

    5. I've been looking at the pre-order for Oryx, but I am having trouble finding a clear picture of what "sienna tan" is. The website links to this instagram post with a bunch of different colors that could be sienna tan. Is it similar to the "caramel tan" here: Haru Resin Colours & A.K.t. standards | twigling ? I tried looking on fb and instagram and I'm stumped.

    6. We all are, honestly. @twigling has acknowledged that she needs to update her website with more/better/clearer/any recent information about her resin colors, but has not yet done so. I've been meaning to order a body for ages, but the extra step of having to email her to get clarification about what resin colors she's actually using has so far prevented me from doing so. Other doll artists/companies with clearer information keep getting my money instead...

    7. Sienna is the lighter of the two tan shades here (raw umber, which was limited is the darker one). I checked this with Reese when I last ordered, because I’m going to be trying to match a head to another body.

Also @Girrl I agree, it’s been pretty difficult with the change in casters to know what colour the resin is, and I’m glad they’re fixing it on the site. I’ve had to clarify what a few colours were, so if you’d like a hand at all, you’re always welcome to ask. I think I can pretty much identify all the standard colours by now.. I also own the white and the mint green (which is available on request) in case seeing either helps!

    8. Sighthound lady on YouTube has an amazing collection of twiglings and she just got a sienna tan oryx and did a box opening video on her you should check it out. Hope this helps to me it looks more orange than the other browns and tans do.

    9. Thank you all so much! I was sort of hoping for an color in between vivid and sienna tan, so I'll have to think on this a bit.

I also emailed Reese and got this reply:

In this photo, vivid is top row far right (#4), and sienna tan is #7, second row third from left.
In this photo, vivid is the lighter tan colour, and sienna is to the right of the frame, the darker brown is raw umber and the black is Obsidian.
In this photo, vivid is the more "orange" colour.
In this photo, the brown at the far end is sienna tan.
Here, sienna tan in the middle and raw umber at the far end.

    10. I love these production shots. All the potential of dolls-to-come stirs my creative juices!

    11. When mine comes home from the spa, I can take comparison photos with my Soom boy if you'd like! I hadn't considered Soom, and somehow forgot that they do sometimes make jointed hands in colors other than NS.

    12. That would be fantastic!!

    13. She’s definitely short torso, long legs. The short torso is a lot curvier, versus the long torso is has some abs to it! I could get you a picture of the two together if you’d like. (I have long torso/long leg, short torso/long leg, and long torso/short leg.

a-bust, long torso, long thigh Gamine, then b-bust, short torso, long thigh ingenue, then b-buse, long torso, short thigh gamine. Ingenue is actually the tallest because of her head, but you can see there’s ~1cm of difference in their shoulder heights! I unfortunately only have a and b busts, but I have a c coming in on my next order. If you want owner pics of heads that aren’t ingenue and gamine, I have more ingenues because I’m an addict, but also a blank pieta and a blank Elbe!

    15. they are beautiful @Chameleon! Any tips on good corsets/shorts/skirts that would fit a short/short girl? I love your Gamines outfit!! (Elbe spam welcomed as I have one on order)

    16. @Chameleon ohhhh they are all so beautiful! Thank you so much! I really like the B doll body.

      Let me see your heads!

Also, what are your favourite hands?

    17. My gamine is an an approximately sd16 outfit a friend made!! As for short/short, I'll know better when I have one. I go for dresses or very stretchy garments, and the b bust for sure fits sd16 tops. I will be trying out EIDf pants, becasue their hips fit not high so far!

So far, I prefer the original, though the long nail ones are growing on me! the fingers on the long nail are longer, so I got a pair for a really big doll as a hybrid project, and I like the way they're looking on her. And heads coming up! I can never resist showing off!

    18. @Chameleon hope you are not taking any picture.

This pre-order is not for me apparently.

I went to order and now the doll costs 1200 euro. I guess I missed the discount period? So sad and also mad.

    19. That’s super bizarre. I don’t remember there even being a discount period, I thought she’d just changed the price when she announced it. It says in her Instagram announcement for it that the final price is 999, so maybe it’s a mistake? I had some weirdness happen with a discount code, and we got it sorted out.

since I’m hoping this is just a website issue and not an increase, I’ll show off some pictures anyway. [IMG]Heads by Indifferent Red, on Flickr

    20. @Chameleon Yeah, I contacted Twigling about it and she told me that it was a problem of the site, so now it's been fixed. Fiuuuuu!

Your heads are all sooo beautiful!! I love each and every one of them! The teal one is my favourite thou.

I think Elbe and Oryx in obsidian could be awesome <3 Should I consider buy them both? XD

As always, thank you with all my heart for taking these pictures and always answering my posts, I really appreciate it!

    21. No problem, I'm glad Reese fixed it!!

I'm so glad you like them! That teal Kahlo is one of my favourites too. I'm getting an obsidian elbe, but Oryx has looked good in every colour I've seen her in (I'm enchanted with a raw umber one right now...) Not to be an enabler but,... both is always good.

    22. Stunning line up @Chameleon! Does anyone have a pattern for shorts for twigling girls? Would love to make my incoming short/short Elbe some! Also large bust shirt pattern?

    23. @Chameleon Eh, so I followed your kind "enabler" (xD) advice and got both heads. It took me a week to choose the body options just because the obsidian color is prolly never going to be released again. I hope I like the short hip-long legs setup. It was really a nightmare for me xD

    24. Glad to help enabling! Short hip/long thigh is so far my favourite configuration, so it's what I have coming too!

    25. actually, the obsidian color probably is going to be rereleased again, based on the last time Twigling offered it and said it was a very limited one time only thing :|

    26. I hope I chose well xD Even if I passed last week watching video and pictures, I dunno what to expect! But finally I ordered a Twigling! I'm actually super intrigued and I haven't feel this way towards a doll in very long time!

At least she didn't re-release Ingenieuse :D Now that I think about it is this obsidian the same from the first time? Also, she said that maybe the color will be available again, but it's just a possibility. I should read again her post on fb, because I have a vague recalling about it.

    27. She can't re-release Ingenieuse - it was a collaboration with another artist and she doesn't have sole control over the sculpt

    28. I’m so excited for you!!! I can’t wait to see how you like her!!!
I’m honestly just thankful I got to order this time. I wasn’t in the hobby in late 2013, and I could never have afforded one second hand. This time around she’s said she probably won’t be redoing this, but I think doing it has been a great opportunity for a lot of us. I talked to someone from the 2013 order on discord who is even using it as a chance to get a body for one of the original heads.

    29. I guess that, hypothetically speaking, if they both agreeded the doll could be released again. Ofcourse she is LE so that's not the case.

I've always wanted a Twigling, but never found the right time and I was actually quite stubborn to try and get the obsidian LE. Time passes and the Ingenieuse face doesn't appeal to me anymore, meanwhile someone on DoA put her on sale for 1k and I asked myself "Do I really want to spend 1k for a 2013 doll whose head I don't like anymore?" (Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the doll isn't worth those money).

I'm glad I didn't buy her, because with the same money I had the skin color I've always wanted and 2 beautiful heads that I really like <3

    30. I’m also glad you decided to wait then! I also saw that ingenieuse, but I just didn’t have the money at the time! Elbe and Oryx are such beautiful heads, I can’t wait to see how they look in obsidian.

    31. @Chameleon I wonder who got the doll!

I think Elbe and Oryx will be beautiful in obsidian! I will post pictures as soon as I receive them xD

    33. Hey people!!

I just want to pipe in on a couple of things. Dunno why I got a notification for the post directly above mine but none of the others, I never have time to check forums anymore, so rely on the notifications to remind me to have a peek once in a while, at least in some twigling-related threads.

Obsidian as a colour will probably be released again, what I have said is that I wouldn't release any one sculpt (heads mainly) in that colour more than once, so next time it would be with any new heads released after the ones that currently exist and are ummm, "in progress" such as resized Eloy (just receiving final sand/prime/sand/prime/sand/prime/ad infinitum) and 90% Ingenue OE & SA. Well they're not just resized, I am tweaking them a bit too so that I won't again have the bright idea to discontinue them because I no longer feel they align with my sculpting style. Ok, I mean it at the time of writing, but things happen and nothing is forever. That said I hope to remain a part of the BJDverse for many years to come.

About Ingenieuse, it's another something I'd have to discuss with Nanyalin to be able to offer again, and it's not completely off the cards, but it isn't a priority. Although, now that (knock-on-wood) I seem to have a fairly stable production source, other business issues are *mostly* settled down and it's something I can consider. If it was up to me though, since Ingenieuse was built over Ingenue SA, she would also need to be reduced to at least 90% to sit nicely on the TL3 body. And if we were to get her scanned, Nany would probably like to offer her on one of her bodies as well. Anyway, it's all up in outer space (meaning way above the sky or clouds) at this point, but definitely not saying never.

Just a note about Obsidian, the price was originally set at €1200, but I dropped it to €999 due to the whole pandemic cluster**** that you might have heard of, that probably has affected the income of many of us, and I set an end-date to the discount offer which was concurrent with the end of the survey-coupon (Thanksgiving), but some orders were placed after that, and all of those were informed and part-refunded.

Ps. I have only skimmed this last page and there is too much before that to catch up and comment on, but please know that I always try to respond to direct comments whether it be email, on the Facebook page and on Instagram. Thank you for supporting twigling and loving the Artifex Kindred through the years, I feel very lucky and blessed to be able to keep doing this.

    34. Oh wow I totally didn't get that point. I thought that the obsidian black was a one time only thing. Opssss! Well, then I'm glad I skipped Eloy and Ingenue cus I wasn't really sure about them, also *new heads* yummmy!

Also, also! Even if the Ingenieuse is a project out in space and time I will start saving money anyway cuz this obsidian black project was totally unexpected until it happened :P

About the 1200 euro: it was just a bug. I went a little out of board thinking that I lost a great occasion ahhahah

The other pages are more or less about people helping each other because it's really HARD choosing options for one of your dolls! And I'm a first time buyer! But I'm glad people in this thread helped me making up my mind!

    35. Well, I did do Obsidian black resin once before, just with other headsculpts ;)

Thank you for the summary of previous pages, it makes me happy to hear you guys are looking out for each other when it comes to navigating the process. I still have a lot of notes to go over when the time comes, in terms of potential improvements to the website itself and its function and ease of use, and will probably reach out to get your opinions and ideas when I get to that, but in regards to the process of deciding what parts and colours to pick, it really is a very personal choice — unless the issue is that there are not enough official pictures of the options and possibilities, so having the community is a blessing. :aheartbea:aheartbea:aheartbea:kitty1:thumbup

    36. Personally, it was really hard to choose ahaha Normally, you don't get to decide hips size, hands shape and legs lenght. For a person like me it's a living nightmare, so I had to see pictures taken by you, the artist, and those taken by DoA members, analyzing them with the zoom and from every possible angle and then decide. Same with the heads. I did a loooooong research.

    37. I had a lot of fun enabling for that!

    38. My current Twigling collection! I ordered a Khalo in cream (I forgot to use my coupon discount code DARNIT lol) so now I just need to get a Gamine and Pieta and I've got all the sculpts! Besides the elves because no way ill find one of those lol. I would die of happiness if there was another release.

    42. Hi all, I thought I would join you all and share my Vivid Gamine who finally arrived following a two month holiday with UPS last week....Its been a bit of a nightmare but she is here now and I painted her yesterday.

    43. She's so pretty! :D
That shipping must had been a nightmare. Good she got home to you in one piece.

    44. She's gorgeous!! I love the grey eyes!

    45. Thank you :) Yes it was! The fallout from Brexit was the excuse but it seems to have been more UPS i think.

    46. Thank you, yes so do I :) These are 12 mm oval glass eyes. I struggled to find eyes that i liked in her and didn't think these would fit, but i got away with it because they are oval, I think. :)

    47. @twigling has there been any movement on updating the color samples? The ones on the site still seem like they are from an older batch since that obsidian isn't included. Sorry if I'm looking in the wrong place! I still find it a bit hard to navigate the web site.

    48. oh yeah, those are from an older caster! The best samples I've found for the current colours are on insta, and I've done a little guesswork to get it...

This post has teal, and on the second slide, top left is Vivid. This has what I think is NS (pink?) then vivid, grey and Argyria (which was limited). This post (middle body) is Sienna, in between Argyria purple again and Raw Umber, which was also limited. This post has I think Sienna, then my doll in Cream, then I want to say raw umber, teal, and then vivid again. This and other pics were what I saw of obsidian! (feel free to weigh in if I've gotten anyone mixed up!)

    49. I'd just like to comment that, for how much @twigling's dolls cost, what the resin colors look like shouldn't have to be based on guesswork and conjecture - the cost of just a body is upwards of $850. That's not exactly a price that most people can casually afford
on a related note, I've been wanting a body for one of my floating heads. I took a photo of the headcap with the headcap of my Vivid Pieta from 2016, if anyone could opine on which of Twigling's current resin colors would be closest to the Granado resin I'm hoping to match (taken in indirect daylight around noon (it was overcast))

    50. Wow! Thanks so much for the sleuthing! It’s a bit hard to imagine what the dolls look like from a handful of Insta posts :frownyblush: There’s gotta be a better way! Hopefully, Twigling has some updates planned for the site to actually show what you’re paying for :sweat

    51. Nope, not yet, sorry. All the colour sample photos I have posted are from previous manufacturers and the only samples I have are those shiny chips from DSC that (while the same colour) does not look like the same since the dolls are more matte texture.

And now I'm told no shipment being made til end of June, not that all the offered colours would be in that shipment either... ‍‍:frownyblush:

    52. Hey Girrl, you make an excellent point and I am sorry I have been lax about this :vein will try to remedy this as best I can with what I have, and will have, on hand going forward.

While colour matching between companies and batches is always going to be a gamble, it should be possible to make some sort of estimate. As DoA doesn't doesn't do image uploads, I can't post it here right now, I can't show you the image I have taken, but if you get in touch on Instagram @twigling or via email, I will send it to you and do my best to help you pick the closest match. For the moment it is a morning /daylight phone cam image, but I can redo when direct sunlight hits, and will do some proper camera pics too (charginging the camera battery now!)

While it's always lovely to receive praise, well phrased critique is perhaps even more welcome, it's what we seem to learn from. So thank you for speaking up, please never don't do that, at least for me :eusa_pray

      • x 1
    53. I can understand your frustration, but I never claimed that my insta-sleuthing resin references were supposed to be a full solution. I know it would be better to have official pics.

You’re really welcome! Again, I get how in-ideal this is as a solution, but as a quick fix for people who need a rough idea of colour, I’m hoping this can help.

Also, thanks, Twigling for weighing in, and letting us know we can contact you about resin-matching! Oh m sure that will be a lot of help for some of us going forward!

    54. Weeeeeeell, ideally the information should be easily available so you don't need to ask me for it, but if someone needs, I will do my best to solve. These requests also serve as reminders to get the info available on the website, because I tend to forget as soon as some other issue crops up, and they always do.

    55. I mean, I know Twigling dolls are expensive (I pay for the quality of her dolls tbh and while I agree that her site is a little difficult to navigate I really don't mind do some research: I actually find it enjoyable), but she also has just recently changed the factory that will cast her dolls, so I guess it will take time to fix everything. Plus, I want to remind that she manages her business by herself, so we should be more understanding.

Chameleon, thank you for the excellent resin color recap!

      • x 1
    56. Thank you so much! Also totally agree that the recent shift, and also the amount of things she has to do to keep it running mean we should cut her some slack here! (Also I’m so hyped, because I have a doll in the shipment DCS is sending At the end of the month!)

    57. The change of factory was sometime (a year maybe) before covid started, though sure it is not making things any faster. I don't post about all the setbacks I have had with getting anywhere with renovating the web over the years, but it's one of the things that I juggle along with fabrication, and that also never seems to take off properly. I am part of the problem, for sure; and having more funds to inject for someone to dedicate time and expertise to get it done properly and quickly, and beautifully would be great.

I won't go on but you, my dears, are being wonderfully patient with all this, and maybe even too quiet at times. Any specific complaints, feedback or criticisms are in fact welcome both as reminders and as pointers as to what needs fixing.
