very cool tutorial, I put some cotton batting in mine for added fluffyness lol I sewed in some Velcro to the inside corner and on the back so when I wrap her up the velcro matches and keeps her safe
That's cool! I might make one when I get my girl! That way she'll be safe inside a carrying case. Thanks for the tutorial.
I love love LOVE this tutorial! Finally, a way to have my dollies wrapped nicely without spending tons of money! Here is my very first attempt at one. Keep in mind that I haven't touched a sewing machine in like twenty years, so this is something of an accomplishment for me. It's not perfect but that piping really DOES help it to look more professional. lol Rowan has eagerly agreed to demonstrate. She is a Fairyland Littlefee Chiwoo elf. Say hi, Rowan! I cut 17 by 17 inch squares for the main body of the blanket, and the corner I cut 8.5 inch triangles (on the right angles). I used plain cotton quilting fabric and fleece. Both on sale. Woohoo! As you can see, I love bright colors. And this is what she looks like, all wrapped up. The corner does cover her entire face. I washed all of the cotton fabric before cutting it, to (hopefully) remove excess dye. And there you have it! Although, if anyone can tell me the best way to hide the edges of the piping, I'd appreciate it. That goes a bit beyond my skill level. ^^; The pic cut it off, but my edges are in the middle of the seam and look kinda blah. Is it better to overlap them, and tuck them into a corner, or how would that work?
Thanks to everyone who has submitted photos and suggestions!! Stormlight, to finish the piping you can either hand sew the two edges together, or overlap them slightly and taper them to end inside of the seams. Hope that helps!!
Aw! This is a really cute idea! I think I might try this... Only thing is I do not tend to take my dolls with me when I travel. Especially if it is a week or less. Still, it might be hand to have around. Thanks for sharing!
hello lolita - Yeah, it does. I just handsewed the ends on the first one but it doesn't look that nice to me, so the next one I try, I'll tuck the ends into the hem. Has anyone made one without using piping? I'm having difficulty locating stores that sell it by the yard (only packs which contain just enough to make a tiny-sized blanket), so when I tackle the bigger blankets, I may have to forego the piping. But only if the blanket won't look bad without it. heh heh
Just finished mine I only had scraps of fleece, so I made stripes (albeit uneven ones..but whatever) @stormlight--I bought my piping at hobby lobby in a pack..it had 2.5 yards which happened to be enough for mine, with about 2 ft. left (although mine is for a 42cm size doll)
Thank you so much for this these are great. I was looking for something i could make for my 2 before they came in. Should be getting them in for the holidays and so want to be able to take them with me to show my grandparents. This will be perfect. It will lessen my worry about taking them places and look really neat too.
I made two last night! One with piping and one without (used top stiching since I ran out of piping). They're really nice. I did however, switch the fleece and cotton so that the cotton is on the outside and the fleece is on the doll. I think I might stuff any others I make with a few layers of batting to make it more cushiony too! Thanks for such a fantastic tutorial!
Thank you so much for this tutorial! My mom and I used it to make our own blanket for our doll. It turned out great and I love that it is special to her. Thank you again!
That's great! I'll have to carry my doll around in two days, so I know what I'll do tomorrow!!!! Thanks!!! update: can't post the picture, I'll have to check why. I'll try later... sorry!
I LOVE this tutorial I've made little blankets for all my dolls! Here is Sam's blanket: Maddie's blanket I think her blanket is 17x17 inches. I like the blanket having lots of extra room for folding. and my F-18's blanket It's huge! But I still like it. I think the measurements are like 22x22. Here she is all bundled up like a burrito
Aww those blankets are so cute. I never thought a baby type of blanket could be useful for BJD haha. Will have to try this when I have time! ^___^
That's a great tutorial ! I made a blanket for my smallest doll, a pukifee, since she's the only one to not have her own travel suit Now she can safely follow me ^^ I used pink squarred coton and an other fabric I don't really know what it is, since it's all remaining pieces i've been given...
Thank you so much for this wonderful tutorial. Wrapping a doll while travelling is such a good idea and I will give this blanket a go when I get more time.
Thanks so much for this tutorial! I made a few of these for a swap meetup and they were great hits. I reversed the layout on mine so that the cute fabric was on the outside and the fleece was on the inside ... half an accident as the den was down when I was making them and half due to my paranoia of fabrics staining even after washing. Sadly I never took pictures, but I do plan on making more "backwards" travel blankets soon for my own dolls, so I will be sure to have some photos next time. I may even try making a reversible one by adding piping to the inner corner of the pocket.
I made one a little while ago, but lost the thread xDD;; Sorry for the bad phone pictures, I haven't gotten the actual pics off my camera yet. I made it without piping since I didn't have any (and it was three in the morning so I wasn't going to fight with it anyway lol), but it still turned out alright. And I guess my patterning is off, because it's reversible!
Hayate-San, your patterning isn't off because if you make it without piping, it is completely reversible! The piping kind of prevents the head pocket from being flipped. I'm so happy to see this thread still going strong after so long! Keep posting pictures of your doll burritos!!!
I love this! I made one for Corinne last night, and it was super quick and easy! I made mine big for her, 16x16. I didn't have this tute in front of me, so I did a lot of guesswork. It's a little sloppy, but I think it still turned out lovely.
thank you so much for this tutorial! my little guy's blanket turned out great! I'll edit this post with a picture later!
awesome tutorial! I am especially happy with the explanation on the piping, I never could figure that out on my own 8)
This is great, Thank You for posting it. I do have a question though: why is the fleece on the outside? Wouldnt it help keep your doll from getting bumped or stop the rubbing off of a face-up with the softer side touching the doll? Or is it better to have the 'printed' cotton side on the doll? What about staining from the prints? It's such a good and cool idea, and I just know I would mess it up so that is why I am asking all these questions, Sorry!
I made my first of these travel blankets while the Den was down, so I "messed up" and put the fleece on the inside because I was following the same logic. Print fabric on the outside to prevent color transfer (even washed fabrics can stain sometimes) and soft fleece on the inside to keep the squish closer to the doll. They were a great hit at the swap meet-up! I think they work well either way and I personally use a face shield to prevent any rubbing to the face. Plus one does not want to crush those delicate eyelashes. To solve my waffling on which way is best to have the blanket, I made my personal one completely reversible!
Don't be sorry; asking questions is how we learn from each other! First of all, always pre-wash any fabric before sewing, not only to help prevent staining but also because fabrics can shrink. I have never had a problem with my printed cottons staining dolls, and they were wrapped up for over 24 hours in the hot car when I moved last week! Second, there is no right or wrong way to make this blanket. If you look back in this thread, some people put the cotton on the inside, some put the fleece. And if you decide to skip the piping steps, the blanket is completely reversible, so you can switch which is on the inside/outside whenever you want. Good luck making your blanket! Let's see pictures when you're done!
Ahw, great tutorial and loads of awesome blankets I'm tempted to make one for my sister doll, as a christmas present :3 I don't have a doll of my own yet, just ordered a DZ Aimi and she won't be home until December/January something :c
OMG!! this is awesome! i love the fabric, so cute with japanese motifs, i will try to make one, thanks for sharing
Nice and great tutorial, it seems not to hard, now i'm thinking about making one for my girl, thank you so much =^.^=
I made one of these a while ago. I made it for a YO sized doll I was planning on getting, but I decided to use it for my tiny instead. I stick her in the head part, and the fold it up like a burrito. It provides many extra layers of protection.
