So you have the face protector, cushions, and carry bag to help protect your doll when you go on adventures together. Even with all of these things, your doll can arrive a bit disheveled… a shifted wig, fallen off shoe, etc. Plus, when you get to your destination, sometimes it’s not the cleanest place… where will your resin friend safely rest and enjoy their outing? … hmmm, I should get my doll a blanket or something!! Oh, but on every website they are pricey, and it doesn’t really fit my doll’s size or personality correctly… What should I do? I know, MAKE IT MYSELF!! Lucky you, I will tell you how!! I took inspiration from the baby blankets that have the little pocket to put over the baby’s head, and created fleecy blankets for my girls that will keep them together and protected while we travel, and give them somewhere cute and machine washable to sit on!! And compared to buying one, I probably saved over $50.00 (when you include shipping). The blanket is square with a pocket sewn into one corner to protect your dolls face even more. While traveling, wrap your doll completely in the blanket for added safety: continued in next post...
Ok!! So how do we make it? Materials you will need: Besides the normal thread, sewing machine, etc. you will need a soft fleecy material and a cotton material with minimal stretch. For an added touch, I used (white) piping around all of the edges. This is not necessary, but it gives the blanket a more professional look. If you are not using piping, ignore the steps that explain it. What is piping? Piping is a ribbon-like notion that you sew into the seams of a garment. One edge is stuffed full and then sewn off, while the other edge is unfinished. You can find it near the ribbon and stuff in any craft store. Step one is to cut out the COTTON fabric, THEN the fleece. For my Volks SD girl, I cut out a 26 inch square. For my Dollzone BB, I cut out a 12.5 inch square. You also need a triangle for the pocket. For the BB blanket, I cut a triangle with 6.5 inch sides for the right-angle sides. Next lay your cut pieces onto the fleece fabric, and cut them a little larger than the cotton. Step two is to complete the pocket. First add the piping to the FLEECE TRIANGLE. Take your triangle with the GOOD SIDE UP and place the piping along the LONG EDGE ONLY, with the PIPING YOU WANT TO SEE going towards the inside of the piece. Place the bad edge of the piping right along the edge of the fleece triangle. There are stitches already in the piping; follow them as close as possible as you attach the piping to the fleece. Next attach the cotton triangle to the fleece. You are going to sew right along the same stitching you just made to attach the piping, with the GOOD SIDES of the fabric TOUCHING. I sewed it with the fleece up so I could follow my stitches. Note how the piping is sandwiched inside, and the good side of the green is touching the good side of the red. Here is what you will have: good side of fleece, good edge of piping, good side of cotton. Fold the cotton under so you have a triangle again, and the piping is the edge. continued in next post...
Step three is to assemble the cotton side. Baste stitch (loose, temporary stitch) the completed pocket onto the corner of the big cotton piece. GOOD SIDE BIG PIECE SHOULD TOUCH GOOD SIDE COTTON BACK OF TRIANGLE. Next put the piping around the COTTON PIECE. Fleece has the tendency to stretch, and if you put the piping on the fleece square first, it could distort your blanket. Note that the piping is on the GOOD SIDE of the cotton, and the edge you want to see is towards the inside. Step four is to finish!! Once the piping is on, make another sandwich: GOOD SIDE cotton touching GOOD SIDE fleece. Sew around the entire edge, following the stitches you made to attach the piping as close as possible. Make sure to leave a gap to turn it right-side out!! After you turn it, fold under your unfinished edges and close it up. And you’re done!! If any part of this tutorial is unclear, please let me know and I will do my best to better explain it!! If you make this blanket, please post your pictures here!! Thanks so much for reading, and happy sewing!!
I love it! I am going to have to read several time to understand how to use the piping! I really want to make one!
My fave part ever! Thank you for posting this! I have been thinking about something like this and your tutorial is great! Thanks!
Oh! I so wanna make one of these now! yay! ^^ I also LOVE the cotton you used. Where on earth did you find it? Both the prints are really awesome. I love temari balls (have made a few myself) and those little kids are just freaking adorable.
Great tute! Thanks for posting! I've made one for my doll I'm saving for, and everything is very clear in the instructions!
Hi, thanks for reading!! I didn't find these fabrics in an ordinary craft store, unfortunately... There is a little shop in the town where I go to college that specializes in Japanese quilting (I know, *very* specific shop!) and they have a ton of authentic Japanese fabrics like this. But just like anything imported, I most definitely paid premium for them, believe me...
Aww thats a really simple and cute idea to keep the dolls safe Really like the simplicity of it! Beth x P.S: Lol, when its all wrapped up, it looks like a sandwich wrap...Love it! :P
for UK peeps, I bought some lovely cupcake material in Hobbycraft...very sweet lolita! I have some old blue fleece and I am going to try this, just seen some of that edging stuff!
I've been looking at similar doll blankets online and they cost a pretty penny so I was discouraged. I really want to try this, especially for my incoming yo since he will be my travel doll. Now, if only I was slightly better at sewing xD;
Wow, i think this is super usefull¡¡¡ I try to made one, i think can put some inside the blanket for made more comfortable for dolls ^_^.
Wow.. Lucky you. Those are so cute. I so wish they had a shop like that near me. >.< It's funny, we have a large asian community, but not many asian specific shops...
thanks to everyone who has commented on my first tutorial!! now let's see pictures of your completed blankets!!
Nice idea! I got my first BJD (Volks) only a few months ago and was still figuring out the best way to travel with her.
Great idea! This quick inexpensive project has so much gift potential, like other doll friends and baby showers. I like the Japanese prints you used. So sweet. LOL The doll burrito picture. Just precious.
these would make adorable gifts XD i have a christmas idea for my dollie collecting friends!!!! the tutorial is very nice btw ^_^ very innovative idea.
Lovely idea. I'm going to make me one today! If you used 26in for an SD, what would you use for an MSD?
his is such a nice tutorial and the blankets you made look so cute. I'll definitely try this out in the future.
What a wonderful idea. O: I travel all the time and I'm always nervous about just having the pillows that came from DOD with them. [And soon I'll have an SD...that I have no idea what he will come with. ;_; ] So thank you! Can't wait to try this so I can stop being paranoid over whether my babies are okay or not. ._.;;
I made one for my boy. Found some material that was actually boyish. Apparently I own alot of feminine fabric. But here is a picture of what mine looks like. I'll probably make a couple more for some friends. Great idea! It's soft and my mom has quilting cotton that I can put inbetween the blanket for extra cushioning.
Ahhh how wonderful!!! You did a great job, and it looks like it fits his personality very well!! I'm so glad everyone is enjoying this tutorial!!
This is wonderful idea!! I travel sometimes with my Fiume, and she has rather big box... so the blanket will be much better for transport. I will make it! Thank you!!! One stupid question: the red or black fabric - aren't you afraid it can stain doll's face? I recently made a black panties for my doll, she had them on for one day, and it stained her. To line the "corner" with something white or pale might be better, I think.
AWESOME!!!! XD i love it!!! i'm going to pick up fabric to make one today!!!! i have to i don't care if my lovelies will be here in late october...
I pre-washed the fabric, and my dolls always wear plastic face-covers when they travel, so I am not afraid of staining!! Good honest question though. If you feel more comfortable lining the 'triangle' with white fabric, I'm sure that would work out great too.
for the SD blanket what size did you make the triangle??? you never said in the tutorial EDIT: nvm i figured it out XD i'm going to get fabric today after pre calculus ^_^ i probably won't start it until later this weekend possibly next week i got other things to make XP
As I said above, I liked the idea so much that I HAD to make the blanket for Fiume I bought 50cm of cotton flannel (60 cm would be better, but...) 2.5 m of bias stripe, vateline for padding and some cotton fabric I had already at home, so here is the result: Fiume enjoys her new, soft blanket, and looks forward to travel Thanks again for the idea!
i'm almost done with my first one i ran out of piping so i have to get more tomorrow -_- i am NOT a happy camper i'll post it tomorrow when i finish it ^_^
I love this It's too cute! Although I'll probably add some ties to the outside of mine to make it more secure.
My darling James now has a travel blanket~! And I now have a way to use up some of the gazillion yards of fabric I have! I'm making blankets for my girlfriend's dolls, my friend's dolls, plus my dolls! It's great fun~
looks *great* everyone!! i'm so glad you have all come back to post your pictures!! so happy everyone enjoyed this...
Awesome tutorial and may I say that your Lolita dollfie is super cute! Where did you acquire the OTK and the shoes?
what is 'OTK'?? Her wig is a HZ wig modded by me, dress is Volks, socks are Volks, and shoes are ReleaseRain from eBay.
Sorry I always seen to think everyone knows the short term for everythin Lolita -_-;. OTK is the over the knee socks but thanks for telling me where to find them
So I thought I'd give this a try cause I really needed something to put her in when I travel, besides her bulky box. I hand sewed this cause the power cord for my sewing machine is missing. Here are my fabrics, I love them to death. Instead of going with a solid fleece color, I went with a small striped fleece. This is what it looks like finished. I forgot to buy piping, but I like how it came out without it anyway. This is Ishi, my girl whom the blanket is for. She's enjoying her new travel blanket! I used a piece of scrap ribbon that I happened to have, thanks to Malvinas! It matched perfectly and it makes it easier to keep the blanket around her so I don't have to worry about readjusting it. any suggestions, or comments would be appreciated! And thank you so much for the tutorial!
aw she looks so cute!!! nice touch with the ribbon hmmmm i would try finding a way to sew it one though so you don't lose it
Thanks for providing this tutorial, I was looking for a blanket to use on my doll's "bed" but I think I'll make him one of these instead now. I always worry about him whe he's travelling in my bag, even with cushions and face-protector. Thank you! If I get one made, I'll link to some pictures for you if you'd like... it looks like a very useful thing to have.
Argh, what a terrible phone camera photo, sorry about that! I just made it, and was so excited to snap a picture that I couldn't even wait to iron it and take out my proper camera. Here's my CH Ange Ai Uri sitting on her new blanket and thanking you for the tutorial! It was quite easy to follow, even for a total beginner like me. (My sewing machine came in on Tuesday this week!) I used pink flannel and a cherry print cotton for my blanket. I didn't buy trimming as nothing caught my eye at the store I was at, and I was too impatient to visit other stores for nice trimming. I might try it again, as the pocket is too small to completely cover her face! Must be something that I'm doing wrong about the thing. :\ but this will do for now, I was having a headache trying to figure out how to carry her around for the moment.
Oh, my! That temari ball fabric is lovely! Excellent job constructing and great tutorial! Thanks for posting.
