Hey, everyone! I finally, after years of pining, was able to get my hands on a couple of DoD's, and they came without faceups. I'd love to try and recreate the look of the old faceups, if I can, but with the disappearance of the company from the entire face of the internet, finding high-res images of them can be increasingly difficult. I know it's a long shot, since they're such older dolls, but would any of you out there still have any of your old DoD's, any of them, with their default company faceups? Most of the pictures I can find on the site are old enough that we were all taking them on our potato-phones, which were great at the time, but they don't really give the kind of resolution I'm hoping to be able to find, nor are there many that focus specifically on the details of the faces even when they are in higher resolutions! I've seen the old DoD faceups and database threads, but a lot of the images are either linked from photobucket, so pretty small, or have been deleted out of peoples' image galleries and aren't showing up anymore. Thanks for any help, you guys. I can't wait to get these sweet little cuties all done up! I've been wanting DoD's for so long, so this was really a dream come true, especially finding a Too and Bee-A set being sold together!
I am also a huge fan of the old DoD faceups! There is something just so truly nostalgic and simple about them! Congratulations on your new Too and Bee-a! I'm not sure if you've seen the collection of images on the old DoD BJD Wiki, but there are some decent photos here: Dream of Doll Teen Dream of Doll Child Of all of my DoD, only my E-An has her original faceup still. Sorry for the external link, but Flickr will not allow me to upload today. My E-An Hopefully you can get some other photos! Best of luck!
They really are just so pretty! So simple, but really effective and lovely, and there's just something about them that has had me hooked on them since I first discovered the hobby in 2004! I've definitely been scouring the wiki images for a while, now, especially after I knew I'd be able to get them, the images are just a little smaller than I was hoping to find if I really wanted to try and dig in and replicate the faces as closely as I could. I know it's probably a long shot at this point, and if I can't find any that are higher res than those, I'll just try and get them as close as I can. I have a few days before the rains pass enough for me to be able to paint them, though, so I figured it was worth a shot to ask around while I waited. X> Your E-An is so pretty! Do you think her face was done all in pastels, or does it look airbrushed? And how detailed are the hairs in the eyelashes and eyebrows? Those are always the hardest for me to get perfect, and what I'm really hoping to get my eyeballs on more closely.
Skywhys may have posted just what you're looking for below.../threads/is-this-a-dream-of-doll-shade-on-a-dream-of-doll-body.863183/ If it's a female faceup you're looking for. Definitely there was airbrushing to how the glow around the eyes was created. I remember being captivated by that on my dod Shall. I'll try to dig up any original faceup photos I have of her.
I can't help, but I think you should change the title of your thread to something like "Seeking clear photos of DoD company faceups". When I saw your thread I thought you'd be asking for painting techniques, so people with the pics you want might not even click in!
I hadn't taken a very close look at that one because I wasn't sure if it was a DoD or not, since they were trying to identify the doll, and the face-up looked pretty different from the original style DoD used, so I wasn't sure if that was one or not. It's definitely a well-done face, though, I'm just not familiar with the sculpt at all. It's absolutely possible that it was one of their later sculpts, though, from just before they disappeared. I know a few came out around that time that either evaporated from my brain or I never got a chance to see. Thanks for the tip, I'll edit the title of the thread so it's easier to understand.
If you’re looking for more angles, you could try the Wayback Machine, but I don’t think that what we consider high resolution photos existed 12-15 years ago when DoD had their heyday. Internet speeds and computer monitors just couldn’t handle larger pictures, so they tended to be sized down. The photos on the Wiki are super clear, and probably as good as you’re likely to get of a default faceup when it was new and not faded with age. My first doll was a DoD Lahoo, and honestly his faceup was extremely simple. He had some light blush and a little bit of eyeshadow, but his face didn’t have any kind of contouring on it. (I think that’s part of why DoDs often look very different depending on which angle they’re photographed at, because it reveals details that aren’t purposefully emphasized, if that makes any sense.) I think if you can get the eyelashes and liner matching with the thickness in the promo pics of your dolls it’ll look the way it should, because that’s the part of their faces that’s distinctive. There’s no hidden depth you’re missing in the photos available.
How early were you thinking of? My Shall was from 2008 & I've cropped a few closeups for you in case they help. She had peachy colored lips which a friend added red to for me when I first got her. And after a few years the original eyeliner style was no longer my fave so she got a whole new faceup. But I saved the photos as I remember how magical she seemed when I first saw her. https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/f56/LionHeartHats/Starlet_Shall_witch_4_(2).JPG https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/f56/LionHeartHats/Starlet_Christmas_2009_(11).JPG https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/f56/LionHeartHats/Starlet_at_rest_2_(2).JPG As you pointed out, these were taken with my best at the time camera, which isn't as good as my current phone...and I learned a lot about photography once I started taking pictures of the bjds so these are from the early days of my attempts...but eyebrows and lashes can be seen if you squint just right.
Have you tried Flickr? They're a photography site so having older photos that are clear and more likely to show details is right up their alley. I'm not super familiar with dream of doll but I have had good luck tracking down pictures of sculpts from the same time period there. Hmm, you maybe in luck... after a quick search with "DoD bjd" it looks like there's an existing dream of doll tag. Here's wishing you good hunting and good luck!
Which DODs in particular are you after? Some of mine still have default faceups I can photograph Whoops! Just saw you're after Too/Bee-a? I can definitely drop in mine tomorrow! I can also offer up the DOD Dropbox that has as many of the photos from the DOD website I have been able to find
If I remember correctly, DoD offered several face-up options based on certain prompts. This were the prompts: Default, Lovely, Cutie, Natural, Goth, and Gore. /threads/dre...lt-lovely-cutie-natural-goth-and-gore.240867/ You might be lucky enough to find the dolls in here, with a marker which face-up prompt it was. You can also try the database: /threads/the...f-all-existing-databases.205968/#post-3040910
OMG, I know a lot of people have recommended other places, and thank you to everyone who did, but YOU, my friend, have given me a gift from the gods! They're not exactly the largest high res images, but what you've compiled is honestly amazing! There's more here than me and my gf were even able to find through the wayback machine! We tried to look through that, too, but even there, a lot of the pages were unavailable. In general replies to everyone else, yeah, I've tried browsing a lot of the other forums here, but a lot of the time they come up with either no replies, photobucket has mashed the images into little piles of pixels, or the images have just been deleted from databases altogether and have left behind seas of red X's. And man, I'm kind of amused at how we all had such potato phones back in the day, but we thought the images they made were so great! And even when we did have digital cameras, knowing how to operate one properly took a bit of practice. It's interesting to see that they really didn't even have much detail in the eyebrows and sometimes their eyelashes were faint. What I think I'm taking away from them the most is that they tended to have very small strips of "smokey eye" on the upper and lower lids, and that kind of helped hide the lack of detail in the eyelashes, they would use a lot of subtle blushing with bright colors so less was needed, and then they'd hit the eyelids and the lips with a blast of pearlescent powder and gloss to make them pop.
Holy heck this is a true gift! The fact that there aren't just the pictures, but the text from some of the pages? Holy hecking heck. Thank you!
As promised, a photo of my pair: There's a higher-res copy HERE, too. My Bee-A is from April 2007, and she was a "peach" faceup, Too is from October 2008 and is a custom faceup done by DOD in the same style as Bee-A. They must have changed artists somewhere in the year between? @hellsingmongrel , @Korofel : DOD is definitely my specialist subject - I actually saved basically every image from their website before they disappeared I have quite a lot of other information I haven't had a chance to add to the dropbox or the wikis yet, too!
OMG, thank you for that! They're so pretty! And that really helps show the details! Man, the hard part is going to be getting the delicate, fine little lines for those eyebrows and eyelashes, but that image is great for showing more about how they did it! So it looks like they definitely did a tiny bit of blushing under the eyebrows in the same color as the "hairs," and most of the lines seem to be in a peachy color? Which stands to reason, if it's a peach faceup. I remember even back when they were still around, finding different images of the faceup styles was so hard! DoD really was just so great, and I'll forever be upset that I wasn't able to afford to get them before they disappeared from the internet forever. Me and my @Korofel just spent hours going through that entire dropbox and being shocked at all the things we'd forgotten! XD There's such a wealth of info there, even just with images alone!
