Contest Triathlon Round III: Twist of Fate

Aug 20, 2017

    1. Wow I nearly missed that we have to include our prob... Well I still can use the scene I had in mind with some changes

    2. After getting over the moodiness about the poor challenge #1 results I've changed my plans for the last challenge and went for something I would not have gone otherwise. So who knows, there might be some good things coming out of the bad things! :sweat

    3. We've had a few questions so this is just a general reminder that all props and constructed scene items must be made specifically for this competition - you cannot utilize previously made props, scenery, etc.

    4. But we are allowed to use other dolls as "props" and their clothing and looks doesn't have to be made by our self's if it isn't important to our dolls fate.. correct??

    5. That's correct, you don't need to build other dolls from scratch and they can wear pre-made clothing unless said clothing is significant in regards to your dolls fate: For example, you can use another doll as an executioner but you'd have to make their robe since they are a key figure in your doll's execution.

If your doll ends up as a successful rockstar, you wouldn't need to construct outfits for the hordes of screaming fangirls.

    6. Great! I thought we needed that clarification because it kind of contradicted the other previous statement about props being made specifically for the contest :)

    7. We updated the rules for clarification about the small clothing exception:)

All props, furniture, and constructed scenery do need to be made specifically for the Triathlon to be included.

    8. Ah I'm back at the crafting table... I did a first round of photos yesterday, they are good but I'm not 100 % satisfied.

    9. Oh god! I just sent in my part.. First one I am unsure of x'D I hope it gets accepted just fine..

    10. Mine's sent too! Now I can relax and do other things! :celebrate And wait for the last voting.

    11. You guys are so fast! I've barely even started xD

    12. Haha, me three @Snyblind and @Fate! :XD: I've got an idea, but that's about it... Hopefully I'll be able to go location scouting today, and everything should move pretty fast from there. "Should" being the operative word...

    13. I'm always paranoid, I had so many issues with my computer in the past! Better to do it earlier than later :kitty2

    14. Good thing I'm not the only one! I actually had to double check the deadline there for a moment x)
But yes, I also wanted to be finished earlier in this round! But we'll see how it turns out ><

    15. We've had a few issues so this is a reminder:
You can describe your concept, but do not use this section to tell your story. We will be contacting entrants and asking them to update their entries.

Also remember, your story has to follow your selection of lucky or unlucky. The moderation team has a record of what you selected so please make sure you stick with your chosen selection - if you do not do so, your entry will be disqualified.

    16. I've changed mine, I hope it's ok now. It was probably far too long before. I understand the photo should speak for itself, and description in the concept field should just lead the reader into the right direction.

    17. If our entry is deleted does that mean it is a-okay?

    18. I've just updated mine and it was gone in a minute, should be ok! :) I guess if it needed editing it would be left there for us to change it.

    19. If your entry disappears it means we've accepted it and are processing it for voting :D

    20. That's great, thank you so much!

    21. I'm not sure I understand the distinction between describing my concept and telling my story....could you give an example using your previous examples of the doll that's a rockstar and the doll that's beheaded?

    22. @skyealloway I believe it's because it's the picture itself that must tell the story.
It's what the voting point "Narrative Skills" is there for.
      =^.^=

    23. The picture itself tells the story, the concept just provides additional information.

      For example (rockstar - lucky)

Image is of a doll on stage performing in front of a crowd.
Concept: It was challenging trying to portray a performance on a lit stage in front of a crowd of this size: I wanted to show that the audience was massive and that the show in fact sold out, without using 9000 dolls.
Or perhaps you could say in concept: After their youtube video went viral, the (doll) had a chance to play in front of a live audience - the show sold out!

In both versions of concept, the story is still being shown through the image - without the concept information, the viewer would still be able to see that the doll succeeded in their goal of performing on stage.

      For example (beheaded - unlucky)
Image doll on the executioner's block (or maybe the head is in a basket and the executioner is holding the now bloody axe) - we can clearly see that the doll was or is to be executed.
Concept: I wanted to make their death/execution moody so I used actual firelight as the main light source. The executioner robe is actually a skirt I had in my closet, but it draped so nicely - the shadows perfected the illusion.

Concept: After failing in their attempt to assassinate the high priest of the temple, (doll) paid the ultimate price.

In this example as well, the main storytelling occurs within the photograph rather than in the concept paragraph.

I hope this helps :) If you need more specific help, please let us know in Ask the Moderators - we'd be happy to go over your entries if you aren't sure about whether a concept description would be allowed or not.

    24. Of course my computer broke down before I could uploud ... Good thing my boyfriend has his own

    25. @Uminari you're having the worst luck this contest. :(

    26. ironically it´s fits my dolls theme.. maybe I shouldn´t choosen her

    27. Haha, maybe you jinxed her. ;)

    28. The good side is that it seems that I bonded with her. I had a hard start with her and she only arrived a week before the contest. Even I have little chances to win I have this and the experience

      • x 1
    29. That's a great side effect of these contests. :)

    30. phew i did it just submitted my entry for round 3. :D

    31. Mine is already processed so everything was fine :D I was a little nervous about it. Next year I will take better shots for the next rounds too. It makes a big difference... I was too stressed and nervous

    32. You guys are killing me! I just started my entry last night! Congratulations on finishing though, hope mine is ready on time :)

      • x 1
    33. Omg x'D I almost get stressed on other peoples behalf! Argh! I hope everyone makes it in time!! x'D

    34. Go go go!
We all did such a good job

    35. Entry submitted - really hope I did that right (to be honest the examples of the 'concept' paragraphs seemed to me to actually be telling the story anyway? Um... So I hope I've understood that!)

Good luck to everyone still working on theirs - can't wait to see the fates everyone came up with!

      • x 1
    36. From how I understood the examples was that the concept description could discribe what we see in the picture and how it relates to the other challenges but not tell the full story behind the picture..

We can say that the rockstar is on the stage but not how he got on the stage?

I might have it wrong tho x'D

    37. The concept is really either what you were trying to depict and challenges you encountered in doing so, or a discussion about context for the photo and its connection to the other items in the challenge (for example, the princess thought the lamp contained a genie but it was a demon who enslaved her = photo shows her chained in the creators version of hell).

Your photo ideally will tell a complete story in and of itself without relying on the concept text. The concept box merely supplements the story told in the image (so try to take a photo that could act as your entire entry as if the context box would not be present for voting).
Your concept should not go beyond the moment of the photo - so if your photo was of a swordsman about to duel his lifelong six fingered foe, you cannot use the concept box to discuss the events of the duel itself or what happens after - you can only say "Inigo finally found the six fingered man"

      • x 1
    38. oh i think i get it now, kinda misunderstood what i was suppose to to put in the concept box with the other examples. trying to remember what i wrote XD
Hope my visual story telling is better than my written portion :P

    39. We will be contacting people individually if there are any issues with your entry (so submitting early is good because that gives you time to fix anything!). If your entry disappears it means we've accepted it :)
If it's still visible don't assume it means there is a problem - it does take us time to process the entries :)

    40. Finished and entered mine. Very exciting! Good luck everyone :)

    41. Thanks for the additional clarification! :) Whilst the info came slightly too late for me - form accepted - I'm glad it'll be up there to help everyone still working on this round.

Good luck everyone - I really am looking forward to seeing the stories people come up with, and the reveal when we find out who did what!

    42. @Fate Thank you :)

I wanted to use some sunlight in my photos, but woke up to a cloudy sky:o even after the whole week with no cloud in sight, almost can't believe it! Almost submiting though:3nodding:

    43. pfew i submitted mine, now the real nailbiting part starts, will it be approved?
it was quite a struggle for me this week, i knew exactly what i wanted to do, but my health was really failing me. My finger (which i badly cut on challenge 1) got infected last weekend, so when it was time to remove the stitches the doctor prescribed me antibiotics (but i am allergic to penicilline which offcourse was what she was trying to prescribe) after a search a of more then 5 minutes for alternatives she found one. But i had so many side effects the apothecary printed the pages for me so i could read them at home (i received 5 full pages including instructions) And off course me beeing me, i had to try out most of the rarely seen side effects (nausea, loss of taste, headaches, stoch pain) and some of the very rarely seen side effects (including muscle [ain like i have been excersising like a maniac and even loss of feeling in my foot, depressed thoughts and lying awake for hours at night. (i didn't even recognize some of the side effects until i reread all the paperwork today, after i had taken the last pill)

so i am super proud of what i managed to accomplish and so relieved i managed to 'allready' enter my submission that i had to share it with you, and sorry about all the rambling on about the medication.

      • x 1
    44. Damn, that sounds rough! I've never heard of anyone having that many side effects from antibiotics o.O At the vet clinic we use several different antibiotics with barely any side effects at all. You must be really unlucky! Good job on finishing the challenge! I hope it made your finger better at least?

    45. -flails- I'm sooo stressed! I gotta get out for pics today! Thank goodness I lucked out on good weather this weekend! (Though I think I would have still done it in the rain)
I'm not gonna lie, Im glad this is the end of it.. I still had fun! But I wanna play pokemon, not do crafts everyday! Lol!!

    46. Yes, my finger is back to normal proportions and doesn't contain the fluids that made the doctor worry . I usually avoid medication alltogether so that is maybe why my body decided to react so heavily on this

      • x 3
    47. Well done, it's a great attitude not to surrender whatever happens!

    48. Are we allowed to use wigs we already have?

    49. Well, senior year of college started this past week for me and this triathlon just... completely slipped my mind?! Whoops lolol. Let's see if we can't get a picture or two for an entry before the deadline. Luckily the entry I had been thinking about last weekend requires very little crafting, if any!!

    50. Yes :)

    51. Cool, thanks! Submitted mine now

    52. :kitty1 Got more for the challenge #2 than #1 yet it is a poor result indeed, will have to come up with something really special next year! It's kinda strange though, getting up this morning and not needing to check on the forum what do we need to do for the next challenge. The crafting days went in a flash. The voting weeks are moving like snails :yawn

    53. good thing that deadline for round three is already over because now I´m salty. I wouldn´t take my last picture after this. I didn´t join the triathlon for the prices, it made fun but seeing this result... wow I need chocolate now.

      • x 1
    54. I am kind of with you . xD I stressed and got my entry in yesterday after having to scrounge for being able to take a picture. Granted, I did do better this round than last, but barely. It was a stressful yet fun experience. And I know I'm totally going to reuse the outfit I made so at least theres that. xD This is my first year though so it was fun all teh same.

    55. You beat me to it! I'm having a good slice of a chocolate cake. It's worth celebrating anyway - it has been fun in its own way.
I might learn from my ''mistakes'' and be wiser next year. I've been sewing for years and even selling my work, and some costumes I've made have been called amazing by some doll collectors, but it's not always helping in a competition. I think I went too much into details; it's hard to have them all noticed in a small photograph. Making a ''photo friendly'' outfit & prop as well as taking a good photograph is half way to success here. : ]

    56. Yes! Learn from this years contest! :D
It was my first time and after getting the round 1 votes, my confidence was knocked out x'D I think that I played it too safe and next year I might be keen to take larger risks!
Even though it might not have gone as expected or as hoped, it is all still in good fun.. If you didn't get the votes you hoped for, remember... We only had 3-4 votes x.x Especially round 2 had AMAZING props! I don't think I saw ANY. in all honesty, that wasn't worth a vote!

      • x 1
    57. Yes, I felt bad not voting for some but then again, you are limited to a few choices only!
Anyway, I'm using a different doll next year. I have a few BJDs now so each of them can have a go and have fun.
