Contest Triathlon Round 3 Voting!

Aug 20, 2017

    1. The end is upon us! It's time to vote for the third round entries in this years Triathlon!

Please take a moment to look through all of the amazing entries below. In this final challenge, participants were asked to take a single photograph which told their doll's fate - the fate they determined by selecting either lucky or unlucky in the first round!
This photograph had to be able to stand on its own and tell the tale without the aid of narrative text- how did the participants do?

When you have finished checking out the entries, please vote! Voting is open to all members, including contestants!

Voters have four points to distribute to four different entries
      based on the following criteria:
      1. Narrative skill
      2. Creative use of materials
      3. Concept development
      4. Artistic merit of photograph
Each entry can only receive one point from each voter, so please choose a different entry for each criterion. If you vote for the same entry multiple times, all of your votes for that entry will be thrown out. Contestants are allowed to vote for themselves.

Voting period: Sunday August 27th 3pm–Saturday, September 2nd 11:59pm EDT

      Voting

Entry # is post number (there is no entry #1)

After you finish voting, take some time and check out the "Just for fun" entries here!

    2. Briefly describe your entry's concept:
My concept migth look unlucky, but the idea is rooted in luck. Sometimes your past needs to be uprooted from the very earth for you to prosper. So the chair is broken and the clothes is almost pulled off. He's a happy dolly thought! No longer attached to his past he is free to spread his wings.

Materials used: Broken chair from the old competition and the clothes from the one before.

    3. Briefly describe your entry's concept:
She played dress-up non-stop for weeks, then her birthday rolled around. After playing Pin the Tail on the Donkey with friends (yes, there's always that kid who pins it somewhere near the nose...) it was time to open gifts. In a twist of magical fate, her family pooled together to surprise her with the BEST gift: tickets to Disney World Magic Kingdom to meet Merida in person! Imagine such luck: going from playing princess to meeting princess!

Fun fact: Her park ticket is a scan of an authentic Disney World ticket from my first ever trip to Magic Kingdom, and the "signature" inside the card is a replica of Merida's official Meet n Greet signature from Disney parks.

    4. Briefly describe your entry's concept: I had to capture several moments into one shot, like the old masters would do in their paintings. You see my lady standing in the middle with her perfume box in one hand and the disguised poison in the other. She's ready to strike. When the Queen is busy in conversation, no longer paying attention to her cup the lady seizes the chance and drips the liquid into the cup.

But she has been seen. A palace guard had thought her suspicious and takes her into custody but he may or may not be too late. As the drop has already fallen and the Queen doesn't know. The lady is executed and shaven as punishment but what will happen to the Queen? Will the poison get to her?

    8. Briefly describe your entry's concept:
Chica is a fashion model, originally Africa-born, but was LUCKY enough to be noticed and invited to the most famous runways. Today she lives in Paris and works worldwide. She is aware like nobody else that the right look can decide about your whole life. She turned from a poor scared girl to a well-educated self-confident woman thanks to presenting expensive high-quality art outfits. The crazy abstract flower dress will stay in her mind forever as a great symbol – this is her first Vogue cover photoshoots! (it’s a pity the date of photoshoots is 13th, she believes in bad luck of 13)

...and that single time she was right... bad weather, a moment of inattention, crazy taxi driver were enough to scratch though her whole career and her whole life....

    10. Briefly describe your entry's concept:
Unlike myself, Xenia has always been lucky.
When she first met her husband, (who is a skeleton) he was taken away by her beauty. She now lives with him in the Underworld where every other living dead soul recognizes her living beauty as a rare sight in the Underworld. To add to her delicate beauty, she is kind and caring like a loving mother to all who she meets. As luck would have it, these sweet qualities, along with her independence and strong-will, caused the people of the Underworld to declare her Empress of the Underworld!
She reigns with strength, power, and the will to do anything for her people who she cares about deeply.
      Long live the Empress! :)

    11. Briefly describe your entry's concept:

Iset leaned too far over the fountain and her crown slipped from her head and into the water. Its mirrored surface cracked as it hit the rocky basin and Iset immediately felt a great amount of her power leave her. It would take centuries to regenerate that much power. The goddess wept, and her eyes, which were once bright with love, turned dark with sorrow.

For this challenge, I photographed outside near some natural ferns which blended well with my faux ferns from the dollar store. I put some more of the flowers into the ground to tie everything together and make a natural landscape. I also gave Iset a new faceup and wig to reflect this unlucky twist of fate. Her mirror crown was also broken for the challenge.

    13. Briefly describe your entry's concept:
      Having it all
In Greek myth, Persephone, daughter of Demeter, the goddess of the Harvest was kidnapped by Hades, god of the underworld to be his wife. She ate six pomegranate seeds while she was in the underworld and was therefore forced to stay there six months of each year.
In my version however, Persephone deliberately eats the seeds in order to have both possible lives. I wanted my photo to symbolically show the moment immediately after eating the pomegranate – one half of the photo shows her fate as Queen of the Underworld and the other her fate as Goddess of Spring and New Life, while the metaphorical chains that would tie her to just one fate or the other are in the process of falling off.

      Materials used:
Several chiffon scarves and other fabrics from my stash for the base and backdrop.
A green and red scarf to become an extra cloak on one side of the picture to represent the new life of spring flowing from her.
Costume jewellery broken up to give the chains (and suspended in mid air by clear thread) plus the jewels for the Underworld half of the picture.
My smallest dolls to represent her denizens or minions (I wanted them to be smaller than her as she is the Goddess), in dresses made from scraps of lace - black for the underworld and white/light colours for the nymphs of spring.
Tiny fake flowers to embellish her crown and the green cloak.
Real flowers, leaves and branches from my garden to represent spring.

    15. Briefly describe your entry's concept: To give more of an atmosphere i used an orange translucent binder divider over one of my light sources to help give the impression that the room is lit with torches or oil lamps. To make it feel a little more like the room has a lower ceiling i used one of the chains and hung it so it would dangle in the top of the picture. to accomplish this i had to use a bit of string and tie each end to the back of chairs off screen.

      Materials used:
a large wood bead with a partly drilled hole in it
      wire cloths hanger
      armature wire
      apoxie sculpt
      white and black wool roving
      blue green yarn
paper in white, yellow, brown and light tan

      gloss varnish
      black sharpie and permanent markers
      brown cardboard shipping boxes
      large Popsicle craft sticks
      wood dowels
24 inch long piece of balsa wood
various pieces out of the assorted Balsa wood sample pack
      hot glue
cardboard tubes from empty foil and cling wrap rolls

    16. Briefly describe your entry's concept: My siren made an army of mermaid from fish. Her mermaid army must attack ships in the sea and plifer the humanity from the humans or their souls. That is the only way the mermaids stay mermaids. With each soul obtained the siren grows stronger in her strength. Her little human snail helper keeps track of all collected by the mermaids. The siren owns the sea at full strength. Exactly as she wants it to be.

Materials used: large thin canvas, acrylic paint, scraps of scrapbook paper, cut outs out of a vintage fish book, fabric, fish tank rock decor and a fish tank plant

    17. Briefly describe your entry's concept:

Bowie's finally made it into space in his rocket... It's not what he hoped for

(This one draws heavily on the doom-laden and death-centred imagery used in latter day Bowie music videos, including the imagery from Blackstar (the solitary candle, space, old button-eyes) and the musical Lazarus)

      Materials used:
      corrugated card,
      foamboard scraps,
      EL-panel,
      mountboard,
spraypaint (so much spraypaint - my stockpile is basically gone),
      floral wire,
an already used pillar candle to make the 'solitary candle'

    18. Briefly describe your entry's concept:
Unlucky were we when the boy forgot to close the gate through the Hedge.
Unlucky was She when She returned to Her realm to gather Her forces, forgetting the Hedgewitch that had had enough mischief for one Midsummer's night.

I so wanted to take this picture out in the garden where I had an actual hedge and greenery to play with. But once I was done with the witch's outfit the weather turned against me and I had to set up an impromptu stage inside.

      Materials used:
More fabric from the stash, beads for the bracelets, fabric pencil. De-leafed corkscrew hazel branches from the garden, footstool to enable the branches to stand up by tying them to the legs with twine. Salt. ALL the black fabric I could find including two bedsheets.

    24. Briefly describe your entry's concept: Her fathers planned gift of having the steamer trunk sent to her with the message that "to fulfill her destiny she would need it" was the best gift he could have given. He had made sure that the deliverer was Evan who he knew would bring her the happily ever after that she so desired. Evan joined Adelaide as part of the crew and she soon found that he was her biggest asset on board. Sailing across the seas she saw beautiful sights and uncovered many of the treasures her father had told her about. The best treasure was that of true love. Adelaide and Evan decided to stay in the Caribbean and she appointed her first mate as captain. Ripping up the maps and finally being happy together as the ship pulls out to sea is where we find them.

    26. Briefly describe your entry's concept:
"A hard battle was fought and victory achieved, what lies ahead in this reprieve?"
After having slayed the evils that had plagued a small town, the lady returns home before the next battle, what awaits her is but a small wish.

I wanted to have a natural/relaxed feeling, so I opted to use natural sunlight as light source, which proved a bit difficult to execute as the sun moves quickly and the wind was starting up around that time. Nature and flowing streams are things that help me relax and feel at peace, so I tried to incorporate those into a place where it still seemed like it could be a persons home. The flowers were quite a surprising difficulty, while the large tree was surprisingly easy.

      Materials used:
      Cardboard, polystyrene, paper tubes/toilet rolls.
      Clay
      Hot glue sticks
      Paper

    27. Briefly describe your entry's concept:
I wanted to create an alien planet without the use of photoshop so I went with a painted background to add the sci fi element. The rest of her props and clothing are meant to convey the amount of time she's been stuck on this planet. I love the added drama of dappled light.
