Contest Triathlon Round II : Enhance the Chance!

Aug 12, 2017

    1. Vote for round two here!

This is the second of three feats of skill on the road to winning one of four fabulous rewards as announced here.

Building props for ball-jointed dolls adds depth, realism and uniqueness to their custom identities. We'd like you to create a unique, in-scale prop that perfectly suits your doll. Use your knowledge of your doll's personality, goals and ambitions to create an item which promises potential assistance in reaching their dreams.

Make a symbolic prop for your doll which relates to the doll's goals or ambitions.
      • Your item must be in scale with your doll's environment.
      • Your item must be made from scratch (no decorating an existing item).
      • Your item may be wall-mounted, freestanding, or held by your doll
      Materials
      • Any repurposed and recycled goods, plus $20 of purchased necessities. You may cut up your own household items or clothing, you may dumpster dive, and you may find that you don't need to spend very much money at all.
      • Basic tools and adhesives like scissors or other cutting blades, non-decorative tape and glue, needle and thread, etc. are not counted as part of your materials.

      • Your $20 budget cannot be rolled over into the next challenge if you do not spend it.
Repurposed vs Purchased Goods: After you've exhausted your craft stash, scrounged around your house, looked through your back yard, combed the streets for usable materials, failed to beg some recycling from your neighbor's garage hoard, and you still don't have what you need, necessitating that you must go and buy something, those are the things that come out of your budget. The smartest competitors would look around, scrounge with all their might and not buy a thing and turn out something amazing. That way they can have a chance at a prize with no monetary input of their own. The second smartest would make something amazing with found parts plus a small part of their budget spent. We want to encourage contestants to consume as little brand new materials as possible.

If you have any questions about materials that may link you to your entry, please post in Ask the Moderators so that you do not accidentally disqualify yourself from the contest!

      Rules
      1. You may submit only one entry.
      2. The prop must have been created specifically for this contest.
      3. Minimal use of photo editing, please. We want to be impressed by your creation, not your amazing use of Photoshop.
      4. Props must be modeled along with on-topic dolls.
      5. No posting entries or other photos that are recognizably from the same photo shoot until after the Triathlon is closed. Describing your in-process or finished outfit or posting pictures before the end of the contest (whether on DoA or on outside blogs, forums, etc.) will result in disqualification.
      6. You must use the same doll for all three challenges.
IMPORTANT: Describing your entries, posting photos, revealing your alias, or soliciting votes (either on DoA or on offsite blogs or forums) before the contest has closed will result in disqualification.

All entries must also meet the general anniversary contest rules and eligibility requirements.

      How to Enter

You will need to provide the following photos:

      1. a front view of your item
      2. a back view of your item
      3. a collage image showing notable details
      4. a photo of recycled materials used (before use)
      5. a photo of purchased materials used (before use)
      6. a photo of receipts for purchased materials (if you have a photo #5 you must have a photo #6)
      7. a style shot of the completed item with your doll wearing the outfit from Challenge #1
Photos must be submitted in JPG format, 600 pixels on the longest side. Oversized photos or photos sent in the wrong format will disqualify your entry.

Do NOT submit your images as links: please follow the directions on the entry form to insert your images. You will be uploading your images directly to DoA. If you are not sure about this, please view this short tutorial before submitting your entry.

Click the link below to start a thread for your entry. Only you and Den of Angels staff will be able to view your entry. You may title it however you like.

Do not contact the moderators with your entry; this form is the only way to enter.

      Voting, Points and Prizes

      • This is the second task in the quest for the Triathlon prizes. Please remember that you must complete all three challenges in order to qualify for a prize. You may join for fun at any time, but you can only win if you have participated in all three challenges.
      • Votes will be submitted and tallied privately. The totals will be made available upon completion of voting for each challenge.
      • Entries will be posted without the entrants' names to try to avoid this being a popularity contest. For this reason, we must stress that identifying your entry to others will lead to disqualification.
      • We will also be employing the same codename system as in past years – pick a good secret identity for this year's contest! You may not use the same code name you used in past contests.

Members will have four vote points to distribute to four different entries based on the following criteria:
      • Craftsmanship and attention to detail
      • Complementary styling to doll
      • Creative use of materials
      • Aesthetic appeal
      Important Dates

    3. I can't remember. Are we allowed to participate in the second round for fun if we were unable to submit an entry for the first round?

    4. Yes! So excited for this round. I was so so hoping we could make a prop :D

    5. You can join in for fun at any time :)

    6. Awesome! Thanks. Makes me feel better since I wasn't able to participate in the first round, though I really did want to do the whole triathlon. Dx

    7. Aw no I'm sorry! <3 it's still fun to join in though! :3nodding: This one is gunna be so so much fun I cannot wait!! :D

    8. Is this bit supposed to be on this leg of the triathlon? :'D It isn't stated in the challenge description this time around.

    9. Cool I already have an idea of what I'm going to make :whee:

    10. So many potential ideas here... Ooh I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone does, and making my own - I always enjoy the build-a-thing section!

    11. Should this prop match the outfit we did for the first triatholon contest? <3

    12. How is 'prop' defined here?
Can a creature/animal/etc. be a prop, or does it have to be an object? My ideas are going in many different directions ^^

    13. Well my own debate is a choice between something that perfectly matches the outfit, but is so willfully, almost belligerently weird, that no one would actually get it until we're allowed to discuss it later... Or something far more obvious, but less cool - from my perspective at least.

    14. Yes. Under 7. its written that our dolls have to wear outfits from Round 1.

I would go for the one whats need a higher craft skill and look more impressive

    15. Well damn. I know exactly what to make...but I'm really wishing I'd gone down a different route for the last challenge. If I had the time I'd build something a little more crazy.

    16. I know exactly what to make! But I am not good with prop making/props in general so this will be interesting!

    17. Eep, well I've decided, but my thing will involve two processes that I've never actually used before... So it may all go horribly!

    18. Oh question!!!
If the prop is wall mounted do we still need a picture of the back??

    19. I was hoping there would be a prop challenge!
      :sumomo:
I've never actually made any major props before, so we'll see how it goes! I have a plan.

And a quick question! So the info says "use your knowledge of your doll's personality, goals and ambitions to create an item which promises potential assistance in reaching their dreams." Does that mean we can add in some of our doll's actual backstory in our descriptions? I was worried to do that in my last one because I've made my doll's backstory kind of obvious and I don't want to be so obvious that I get disqualified... I tried to keep my last one more general. Maybe this is a dumb question, but I'm just wondering!

(I'm also wondering about the "lucky/unlucky" thing and if it affect this challenge! It doesn't seem to, but some clarification would be great!)

    20. I, too, would like a bit more clarification what is considered a prop for this competition.
For instance, a prop in a theatre usually just copies the appearance of the real thing.
But I understand a prop for a doll can be anything really - because it is a doll's item and it would be a mini copy of a chosen thing anyway :huh?:

    21. So, are we making an item to assist them in achieving their goals? Or are we making a prop of something showing that they have achieved their goals? Because there are two sentences which lead me to believe two different routes. I don't want to make a mistake.

    22. You can join at any time if you are playing just for fun :)

It should at least stylistically work with the outfit from the first challenge.

      It's up to you!

We would need to see the back still, yes (so we can see how it attaches)

The item can work with your doll's backstory but keep it vague if that backstory would allow voters to tie your entry to you.
The lucky/unlucky choice does not relate to this leg of the triathlon

Consider it a prop in the sense of something in scale that would exist in their world and that would meet the requirements of the challenge - for example if your doll was a sorcerer it could be a magical artifact that had the potential to allow them to rule the world.
If your prop is a car for a race car driver (for example), it does not need to actually drive so in that sense it would copy the appearance of a real thing without copying the exact functionality of a real thing.

      Assist them in achieving.

    23. Quick question - If we use left over supplies from the first challenge, do they now count as recycled materials for this round, even if they were purchased materials for the first round?

    24. I really don't wanna keep harping on this, but a point of confusion for me is the "...promises potential assistance in reaching their dreams," verses "make a symbolic prop for your doll which relates to the doll's goals or ambitions."

So...how symbolic is symbolic? Like in the magician example you gave, would we do a magic staff that could literally help them rule the world, or something symbolic of that goal, like maybe a giant crown or something?

I'm sorry for all the questions, but I may have to rethink my idea depending on the answer, so I really want everything completely clear so I don't get disqualified!

Edit: I'm sorry, one more question! Can our prop include some little props with it? Like can we make (for example) a toolbox for our mechanic, with little tools and this and that inside it? Or a bookshelf with spellbooks and crystals and stuff for a magician?

    25. .. And here I had already crafted several props for the "Dress for Success" part... Oh well, I'll have to make some more.

      Question:
Does this have to be a single prop, or can it also be a set of props?

    26. I'm also thinking about 2 probs or even 3 if I can make it.
I'm still not sure which technique it will be

    27. Question 1: it's up to you!
Question 2: if your prop contains multiple components (like tools in a chest) you can make all the parts.
Otherwise this is just a single item (so one important spell book rather than a set of shelves full of them).

Single prop unless that one prop has components (for an archer you can do a bow and quiver and arrows for example)

    28. Can we ask specific questions about the validity of our entries in Ask the Mods? I just really wanna make sure I'm good to go before I start crafting... :sweat

    29. Of course

    30. Great! Thanks so much for dealing with my paranoia.

    31. HI - I think my question may have got lost among all the others - it's just about which photo I should include some materials in.

    32. Sorry I missed yours!
Materials you purchased for the previous challenge are considered recycled for this round. :)

    33. Rather specific question posted in the ask the mods section.

Sorry, I know I'm adding to the busy here!

      Edit: Thank you!

    34. The first entry - No problem! All the time in the world.. This entry - I am already super stressed x'D Drying time is the biggest killer tho..

    35. Well the hardest part is over and done with for me, but there's still lots of refining to do before it can be painted and assembled...so onward to the most tedious part!

    36. All I'm at is sketching. MAN, I need to get on this! But pokemon, and my meet at the end of the week... xD
Thanks to everyone asking a million questions-- I'm feeling good now. xDD

    37. I'd like to finally finish my ''prop'', get it posted and then spend the remaining time looking at the part 1 entries and voting. But it all has to wait a bit more, my prop is taking more time than I would like :]

    38. Well the weather isn't being particularly friendly to the processes that I'm attempting to get finished within this relatively short timeframe. However, I'm enjoying this so far - far more so than the steep learning curve with the sewing. (Though that isn't to say I didn't like the sewing - I fully intend to pick up my own machine and actually start doing that properly in future.)

I just hope I manage to get my concept across clearly with this thing, since I'm not entirely convinced that as a build it shows off too much on the skills side!

    39. Anyone besides me who is guessing (and fearing) the next stage?? Next should be affected by the lucky/unlucky that we chose :o

      • x 1
    40. I have a theory about the next stage, but I hope I'm wrong. :sweat

    41. I so want to kick myself at the moment:eek: I apparently like to torture myself. It's going really well right now, so I hope I won't need to go to the backup plan:3nodding:

Hmmm, next round? I've thought of a few possibilities*_*

    42. Oh, I sure am! xD I can't wait to see what happens though~

    43. Is the choice of lucky vs unlucky supposed to match what we chose in part one, or can it be different?

    44. You don't have a choice in this round: The choice was made in round 1. That choice will impact round 3, not round 2.
The question was included accidentally on the entry form.

But that said, you cannot change from one to the other :)

    45. I really got into the thick of things today with this challenge, and I'm having a lot of fun! We'll see how it goes! This is probably the first prop I've made so hopefully nothing goes horribly wrong. :XD:

    46. Ehehehe! The highly experimental (first time using a technique) part of this thing turned out far far better than I expected it to.

Now to get the more standard, but far more important stuff done... Eep!

    47. I'm scared by this challenge already honestly ^~^ my prop is taking forever
but yeh I'm also scared what the lucky/unlucky thing meant

    48. I have a huge blade in one hand and a lot of materials in front of me. Lets do this.
Im still exhausted from my 10 hrs trip yesterday (it was supposed to be only 5 but they had problems with the train) and it was super hot

    49. You can do it!! Whohoo!!
I was supposed to make most of mine finished today, but then I got sick and spend my day in bed x'D
      Hoping for a better tomorrow..

    50. Ack theoretically, by tomorrow morning all that will be left is the detail work.

I say 'all' - the details will make or break this one!

    51. I didn't done much because I need some materials and our crafting shop is closed u.u I already see me failing becsuse our post deliver on the wrong adress again.
But I had time to play Zelda

    52. Don't give up! Try to improvise or compromise in order to succeed! :D

    53. phew got the all the pieces made and assembled. tomorrow after work i can start painting

    54. I've submitted mine and later realised I'd made a couple of mistakes. Oh well, nothing's perfect :] The prop still looks ok, and I will have plenty of time after the competition to correct it!

    55. Well, I've been saying "I'll have this thing assembled today!" for the past three days... Hasn't happened yet. But today for sure! And then I can start decorating, which will hopefully be the fun part. *_*

    56. I'm actually taking progress pics of this one to post /when I can~/ to my Flickr. It's been something putting it together. xD As soon asI think I'm doing it one way-- BAM-- it changes.

    57. This is my first time truly competing since my son was born. Lemme tell ya, it's a whole new gameplay when Tiny Toddle Hands come around."Hold it please mommy?" "No that's a knife! No that's wet paint! That's a glue gun not a toy!" I should be crafting for his birthday party coming up in a few weeks.....looks like I'll be burning the midnight oil all month long :yawn

      • x 1
    58. I totally understand this i have 2 (a 2.5 year old and a 6 year old) and it's summer holiday so they are both at home and all i can think is:"i wish the little one would go to sleep, he looks so tired, he might sleep, why won't he sleep." (he refuses to take naps since 3 months). So i'm sitting at my computer passing time, while beeing fed :"Mooties with a poon." (it's play doh, please pretend to eat mommy and play along stuff.) My craft room is up in the attic and there is to much stuff around i don't want them to touch. Nope not even the 6 year old, since i am barely able to handle some of the stuff myself (looks at finger,..... yes still two stitches from knife cut, doctor wouldn't take them out this morning since it hasn't healed properly yet.) And i am not going upstairs and leave my 2 year old alone, the 6 year old could do it but not with the 2 year old.

    59. Reading the glimpses of progress in this thread I'm really looking forward to seeing what you guys are making!
