      How was the wig made?
I wefted 120 yards of wire into a mesh wig cap, then trimmed and styled it. The process took 15 hours, and the wig weighs almost 3 pounds.

      What was your concept?
She is a cyberchick, sexy but dangerous. There may be weapons concealed in her gold cone bra.

      How was the wig made?
I hand measured and cut strips of various origami papers, and individually glued them to a suede wig cap I also made.

      What was your concept?
I'm in love with Japanese culture, and I wanted to create my image of a beautiful and mysterious Japanese woman, perhaps the goddess of the art of Origami, surrounded by cranes and with hair of origami paper.

      Materials:
Laceweight cashmere yarn ("hair"), Wool/nylon sock reinforcement thread (wig cap), clear elastic beading thread (wig cap inside edge)

      How was the wig made?
I knitted the wig cap from the wool/nylon reinforcement thread to give it strength, then cut double length strands of the cashmere yarn and attached the strands to the wig cap with a mini latch hook. I placed the strands so that the hair could be worn down, in an updo or pigtails without revealing a lot of wig cap, and a part down the back would be centered and even. The latch hook technique knots each strand so that the finished wig can be combed and styled without pulling any hair out. The wig cap had no problem keeping the wig on her head even upside down, but in case it stretched out with further use, I ran some clear elastic beading thread around the inside edge to help it keep its grip.

      What was your concept?
"Definitely Doll" - inspired by (and a contrast to) the "Almost Human" and "Almost Doll" themes of two of the other contests. I wanted a wig that I could actually use for my doll, and I've been wanting to try this technique for some time. This contest was just the kick in the pants I needed to buckle down and try it!

Spanish Moss, Black Dye, Fabric, Thread

      How was the wig made?
I created a cap out of black fabric, then collected and sewed the spanish moss to it in pieces. After the wig was covered with 'hair' I dyed it black and cut it/styled it.

      What was your concept?
I wanted to create a curly wig using a completely natural material that looked and behaved like hair (ie can be cut, dyed, and styled)

      Felt, hot glue, fake flowers

      How was the wig made?
I made a wig cap out of felt, which I wet and then ironed so it would shrink and fit to the dolls head. I took fake plants and used the leaves as a base and flowers as detailing. I used hot glue to stick them to the felt and each other.

      What was your concept?
I worked off the fantasy concept of a dryad; more or less, a plant woman. I decided my dryad would have plants as hair.

      Materials:
yarn, nylon stockings, mesh tooling, wire, plastic lacing, fabric, thread, glue, purple chain, nylon cording, plastic headband base, purple spring coil bracelt

      How was the wig made?
This wig was a definite trial! I sewed a wig cap (after scrapping a crocheted one) first. Then I cut black yarn to length and carefully unraveled the different strands of each piece to get smaller, kinkier looking strands. I also cut strips out of nylon stockings and created a few purple strands for the wig. I sewed wefts of the yarn/stockings and then carefully sewed them onto the wig cap. Then I began trying to style my wig, looping it up on top of the head and creating a bun and wrapped that with the coil bracelet to create an inventive hair piece, then pulled the rest on top. I ended up using a craft headband base to get the height that I wanted. I wound the tooling around the headband to create a "bumpit" sort of fixture and attached it to the wig on the ends and pulled the hair over it and secured it into a ponytail in the back. I wound green craft wire around the top part and created curls at the ends. I also ran silver plastic lacing through the hair and around the back ponytail. I created a fabric kansashi flower hair pin. Last, I used bracelets made from braided nylon cording and purple chains to create hair loops on the sides.

      What was your concept?
I wanted to create a "haute couture' sort of geisha look with this wig. We were told to make it "over the top" so I tried to incorporate as many different materials and ideas as I could. I wanted a sort of high fashion look but with a slightly carefree attitude, hence the fun accessories and the strands hanging down in the front.

      Materials:
Saran wrap (to keep the tape off the head directly) Green painters tape, hot glue, scissors and black spraypaint, a kitchen knife

      How was the wig made?
I originally started making another wig, but I was rushing and getting agitated as it wasnt turning out how I had hopes. Plus the materials I was using were hurting my hands like crazy so I gave up on it. While I was making a base wig cap for that wig, I kinda liked the way the tape looked and one night while dealing with insomnia and watching a movie I started on this one. I covered my dolls head in saran wrap, then taped off a nice shape. Once that was done I took a strip of tape and folded it in half so that I had a strip of tape that wasn't sticky I cut it into pieces then cut wedges out of it to make little spikes. After that I curled the little spikey bits with a knife to make them 'flip up' then cut a small piece of tape and stuck them on going in rows around the head to do the back. Once theose were done and in place I started on the front, which involved even more painstaking busy work of more folded tape then cutting it into fringe. I placed that in spot with tape then trimmed it into shape like hair would be cut. To try and make it neat in the front I cut out some animeish designs and stuck them on with hot glue. Once it was built, I tidyed it up with some extra spikes and fringe filling in empty spots and used some more glue as some of the spikes were too flipped up. After that I removed it from my doll, clipped away the saran wrap and took it outside for painting. It took a few coats to cover as the tape was painters tape ^_^;... heh so it wasn't meant to hold paint. But I got it coated enough. Once it dried I replaced it on my doll and gave it another clipping then took pictures! I really like how this wig came out!

      What was your concept?
Anime/Manga I really like the super preciseness of the hair. So I tried to mimic that look with the various shapes and textures.

      Materials:
Moss, silk and plastic flowers, raffia, ribbon

      How was the wig made?
I started with a basic wigcap base (just a simple sock), and hot-glued moss onto it. I layered longer pieces of moss and paper raffia, then added in different types and sizes of flowers. Finally, I tied in a ribbon and styled the hair around the doll's face.

      What was your concept?
I wanted to make something that would embody
'spring,' something organic and alive like the changing of the seasons. My initial inspiration came from a Mucha print, and I drew on that and the traditional idea of wood nymphs and similar creatures as I was crafting the wig.

      Materials:
ribbon, plastic bag, masking tape, double-sided tape

      How was the wig made?
Lots and lots of patience. Model is a yo-sd so even the thinnest ribbon I had was too thick so I had to cut it in half. After that, I had to cut it to my desired length before meticulously taping it to the wig cap.

      What was your concept?
I mostly went with the flow. I had wanted a longer style, but it looked cute at a shorter length and the pigtails ended up being just a side ponytail.

      Mosses – green and tan
White glue, white tissue paper, and some luck to fasten everything in place.

      What was your concept?
Lammas is the first of the harvest festivals, and if you live in the Northern Hemisphere, it was August 1. This is one of modern Paganism's Sabbats that has its roots in agricultural societies, and is a time to celebrate the upcoming fall harvest. It's the time of year when the first grains are threshed, bread is baked, and people begin storing up for the coming winter months. In some traditions, it's also a season to honor Lugh, the craftsman god; and those celebrating him will put forth items of their particular skill.

Because this challenge was timed for Lammas, I was thinking of the trees just beginning to change and the colors all around our natural world this time of year. This is how I chose the tree as part of his head/being and the colors and shapes for the growth of his hair. I also included 2 feathers in his braid to signify the upcoming bird migration that our feathered friends are preparing for as we prepare for our harvests.

      Technique:

His head was covered in plastic wrap to protect his resin (with a hole for his nose of course) the sculpey was then blended and formed onto his head, texturized, and then baked on a foil form of his head in order to keep the shape.
When the head was cool, I covered the inside with a thin layer of white glue and then tissue paper because sculpey can be brittle and this would reinforce the tree scalp without adding bulk. I also made a very thin cap for his head with tissue paper and glue and left this to harden.
The embroidery floss was separated into individual strands that was arranged on the very thin cap that I had previously formed and pulled through holes designed within the tree scalp and then attached to the tree scalp after it was arranged. This is to protect the resin from any color that may seep from the clay and to secure the strands without much fuss.
After the floss hair was just so, the moss was arranged and attached with white glue. Finally the braid was made and the feathers secured to it. The symbol on his cheek then rose to celebrate the cycle of things and his eyes changed – right to a brownish red within the trunk of the tree, showing the connection to earth and left to green with the growth of the season.

      Materials:
16 gauge wire, 22 gauge wire, seed beads, beads from bracelet, crystal beads, duct tape, silicone glue

      How was the wig made?
I wove a heavy-duty wire frame for the wig 'cap', then strung bead strands down the back, attached beaded wire curls to the front and sides, duct taped the inside of the 'cap' to make it safe for resin and to improve fit, added larger beads for embellishment and filled in blank spots.

      What was your concept?
I love the beautiful updos in bridal magazines and wanted to create something like that but with a lot more sparkle, and I happened to have a ridiculous amount of beads that I never used from back in the day.

      Materials:
Cloth, thread, bugle beads, seed beads, masking tape.

      How was the wig made?
I alternated bugle beads and seed beads to give each strand more movement and drape, and created wefts by sewing and knotting each bead strand together. They started to get too heavy for the cloth wig cap and were pulling it out of shape, so I reinforced it by backing it with masking tape. The masking tape also proved a better, faster means of attaching the bead strands, so I ended up using about half knotted thread-wefts and half masking-tape wefts.

The bead wefts were alternately woven and looped together to style the "hair." Gradated lengths were used and arranged to produced both layered and tapered looks.

      What was your concept?
Sparkle! Lots of sparkle, shimmer, and shine. I thought of bead tassels and how much movement and shine they have, and thought that a bead wig might turn out awesome. And since I had a pack of silver bugle beads and another of silver seed beads, I decided I'd try my hand at making something with some gleam and glam.

I wrapped thread (4 spools) around a stool to get even strands, then I used a sewing needle with the eye broken to poke the thread though the cap that I put on a styrofoam ball. I also made pigtails over small foam balls.

      How was the wig made?
I made the wig cap out of masking tape, which I painted black. For the back part below the bun, I strung the beads on thread and used glue to secure the ends of the strings to the wigcap. To do the side wings, the top "pulled back" section, and the bun, I strung the beads on wire, which I bent to shape and also glued to the wig cap. The silver band on the bun is a small piece of foil, folded and glued into place.

      What was your concept?
I was inspired largely by the hairstyles in Japanese ukiyo-e (woodblock prints), and a little by Dr. Seuss.

      Materials:
Strip of lace, fake yellow carnation petals, thread

      How was the wig made?
I wound the strip of lace around her head and sewed it into a cap then sewed each petal, singly and in small groups, to the cap.
The red bow is mostly for decoration and to make sure a bump doesn't knock the wig off.

      What was your concept?
This challenge is my favorite kind of creation: taking one thing and making it into something else. I wanted to make a wig that is fun and soft and bright; I think I reached my goal. ^_^

      How was the wig made?
Made a base wig cap out of fabric and glued and glued and glued a ton of thread to it till i got the desired look.

      Materials:
Foam, plastic, wire, zip ties, aquarium tubing, jewelry tubing, rubber bands

      How was the wig made?
The wig 'cap' is formed from wire, in a sort of grid. The foam is cut into strips and applied piece by piece to the wire form. Various size plastics and tubing are hand-tied onto the form. The wire wig cap conforms to the doll's head shape.

      Materials:
      Nothing but Yarn

      How was the wig made?
Knitted a yarn "wigcap," and then looped separated strands of yarn through the loops in the knitted cap. Cut the wig to the style I wanted it to be.

      What was your concept?
This was the style of hair my sister's character had. Apparently his "totem" animal is a dragon, so his hair is the colors of fire.

After I made this, I was wishing I'd done the Ancient Egyptian Wig-style wig instead, because these color combinations are not something I would have chosen, and the cut is a little strange, but it came out better then I'd thought it would.

      Materials:
      curling ribbon, hot glue

      How was the wig made?
Glued strands of ribbon to one long piece then wrapped it around the head and glued in place. Made another for the parting. Then styled it by tying up into pigtails and curling the ends.

      What was your concept?
Anime style, bright colours, shiney, and big.

      Materials:
gold and silver jewelry wire and aluminum tape

      How was the wig made?
I made the wig cap out of aluminum tape and bent the wires over it for the main shape then poked wires through for the bangs and made separate pigtail curls and attached them. Added a bow and done!

      What was your concept?
I wanted something that was similar to hair, but could be in a curl and not have a ton of fly aways the way normal wigs do.

Children's cotton tights, elastic, glue, hand spun merino wool yard, vintage mohair, hemp cord, fabric remant, nylon bead cord, branch coral, Venetian glass beads, brass jewelry findings, sea urchin spines, shells, dried starfish, novelty yarn.

      How was the wig made?
Toe of a cotton tight, with an elastic band, Aileen's Flexible Stretchable Glue to hold it all together, macramed all of the yarn strands together, glued and stitched them to the cap, sewed in all of the hand beaded stuff.

      What was your concept?
I've been reading William Burroughs's Cities of the Red Night and it's Burning Man season, so I decided to make her a pirate mermaid burner.

      Materials:
silk/bamboo yarn, onyx donuts, horn points, glass beads

      How was the wig made?
After sewing the wig cap, I cut the yarn and unraveled it into single strands. Then I ironed it so it would be smoother. I wefted the lengths of yarn and stitched the wefts in place on the cap, stretching out the cap as I went. Since he's a white tiger I wanted to leave a long tail in the back, which I wrapped with strings of beads. For the "paws" I left two long tails in front of his ears. The claws are horn points hanging from an onyx donut. For is "ears" I made very long braided strands, made a loop for the ear, and fixed them in place on either side with horn point/glass bead decorations.

      What was your concept?
I wanted something to fit the doll's persona as the Celestial Guardian of the West, the White Tiger. . . even though he is really still a cub. ^_^

Fabric Leaves (Wig cap made from pantyhose)

      How was the wig made?
I fashioned a wig cap then placed the leaves in the desired place and stitched them in place.

      What was your concept?
With the upcoming season I thought the nature concept would be fitting. I felt that the leaves would make an interesting and creative twist compared to traditional materials.

      Materials:
Glow in the dark polymer clay and silk dupioni

      How was the wig made?
I make a wig cap by gluing the silk around the head of my doll and letting it dry. Then I put the new wig cap over a wood shaped like my dolls skull, and cut strips of rolled out glow in the dark clay and sculpted them into "Kelp" shapes and glued them to the wig cap with super glue. Then I baked the wig.

      What was your concept?
My doll is a sea elf. I wanted his hair to look like kelp so that in the ocean, he could fit in with the kelp beds, for natural camouflage. It helps with defence and with blending in while hunting food
