Things that annoy you... *Rant Thread* - pt.2

Jul 12, 2017

    1. The lack of a doll community near me. While Denmark isn't the largest place, when you don't have a car, it can be harrowing to take a day trip to meet up swith other doll peeps. it takes a ton of planning and becomes so rare. No fast meets at the local coffeeshop for me. Long trips only.

    2. I wouldn't say annoy me, but these are definitely a niggle for me:

Having expensive taste in bjds : I have deliberately decided to not buy a couple of recent releases due to being out of a price range I would feel comfortable buying from or justifying, these are 1500+ usd for a blank doll. Years ago I bought a blank for over a grand and while I like him (so unique), I prefer those I paid a lot less for as they are more adaptable and feel comfortable modifying.

Not appreciating local doll meets when they were happening : these were over a decade ago (kinda blame them for getting me into fantasy Soom sculpts ;) ). Now there are no local meets (same city and were large) and pre covid travelled fairly far distance which is costly and are smaller meets in places which cost money to attend). And now there don't seem to be any happening at all.

    3. @mini_hime I really feel for people who are on the newer end of the hobby. I was around when the hobby was new, there were fewer of us so everyone was only a few degrees away from one another and you were kind of held accountable for bad behavior. As an old timer, I hope your experience improves. If you love your doll that is the most important thing! it doesn't matter what anyone else has, or does, or says. It's cool that we all like different things and don't all need to have the same thing, otherwise how would we support so many artists? Diversity in what we like is a Good Thing!

    4. Yes this!
spending so long on finding just the most perfect set of eyes or loveliest outfit.. and its not international. I understand it's their right and that it could be a hassle, but mad it hurts T_T I already live in a country that doesn't have that big of a doll-people pool. So getting just the right thing is HARD. Etsy is my friend but even they often have makers that doesn't send internationally.

    5. Waiting for a doll you’re really excited about, and the shipping stops updating, for days. I’m trying to be chill, but it’s just the unknown that’s so darn frustrating.

    6. It seems like there will be a lull in dolls that I like then all of a sudden it will seem like a bunch of dolls that I like are released at the same time! LOL!

    7. More than anything, I’m always annoyed at myself
My taste change consistently and even my grails change every month or so :sigh I’ll often hate a sculpt only to fall in love with it weeks later.

    8. Why the heck was this doll sculpted so that she'd need a bra if she wanted to wear anything other than a chonky sweater without looking like she's freezing to death.

      WHY.

    9. @rebeccag12363 probably the sculptor was thinking more about how they look nude, than the practicalities of dressing them. One of my MSDs needs looser fitting tops than the slim mini t-shirts that need a cardigan over them.

And of course multiple doll companies have limited time events all at the same time! I know its a marketing strategy, but it works. I try not to be impulsive about buying dolls, but limited time tinies are testing how long I can make myself wait. :doh

    10. Trying to get in on a super-short preorder, happening on a different continent. This has happened to me twice in the last few months. I even did a practice run for one preorder. Had all my information ready. Practiced filling out the online form. When the time came for the preorder to open, I got up three hours early to be on time. I had my order done and sent in under 10 seconds. Turns out my order was number 114. The artist was only selling 30 dolls. And within that 10 seconds, a couple of people managed to get two. Like how was that even possible? She ended up extending to 40 orders because people were so upset, but really? I’m assuming it was internet lag times between here and there.

    11. Is it possible buyers set up sniping software like they do for auctions?

    12. I’m not sure. The auction was happening in the Ukraine. The artist showed the screen with all the orders in it, and it seemed a majority were more local to her. I just assumed it had to do with internet connections and such. I never thought of sniping software. It’s quite possible.

    13. Seeing THE perfect prop in the wrong scale. Happens every time... especially when I'm looking for weapons-- I found my dream blade in 1/3, won't work for my 1/4 guys. Then the next one to catch my eye is sized for those 1/6 scale action figures, but nothing in the middle...

      • x 2
    14. This might be where 3D printing is your friend. 3D printers can size up or down an object quite easily.
I'm currently looking for someone who can upsize tabletop gaming pieces to 1/12 scale for my smallest BJDs.
      Good Hunting!

    15. One of my sisters has a plastic 3d printer and my other sister has a resin one, so there are definitely things that I can commission them for! This one just happened to be metal.

... though now I'm getting my first 1/3 doll and if that size works out for me I can buy him a cool sword.

    16. I really wish they would use the term "scale" correctly. Right now it means hight, which is totally not the same thing.

    17. So far the only thing that annoys me is how slow 'air mail' is. Never again will I go the cheaper route, because good god the tracking is a mess, and even though another package shipped out two weeks AFTER this one it STILL arrived faster! Now I just hope the clothes arrive before Halloween so I can get his costume ready in time!

    18. I agree it sounds like a bot or something like that. Because I just don’t think that many people would have gotten their orders in 10 seconds. I don’t know exactly how their computer software works but it seems like anytime that a preorder or order period (or auction), or anytime an exact time is announced, they can set up their computers to bid or buy for them. If the preorder is at a random time it seems like there’s better luck. That is frustrating for sure!!!

    19. I
would really love to know how the bot staytm works. I’ve lost out on so many things, simply because of computer speed

    20. When you think you can buy another doll or more doll accessories to build up a character that you planned on fleshing out, then a ninja limited doll pops out of nowhere and shines the: "HAI, I'M A LIMITED BUY! PLS LOVE ME!" and then all your plans are put on hold

I told myself no more Dollfie Dreams for now, then I swear VOLKS and Square Enix heard that I love buying FFXIV merch and dolls, then teamed up to dangle Y'shtolla in front of me. So naturally my love for FFXIV AND dolls is getting in the way of my previous dollie plans. I don't even know if I'm happy or mad, I just know I need Y'shtolla ._.

    21. Companies not making shoes that fit soom dolls. And when you DO find the right size, they don't make them in boot style, just fancy dress shoes. My boy only wears boots. T_T This is unfair.
Guess it's time to expand my sewing knowledge and learn how to cobble shoes.

    22. Company photos that are so dramatically styled and photo-shopped that you cannot see what the doll really looks like.
I hate it when only half a face is showing, from a weird angle, or there is gauze or mist covering part of the doll. Sure it looks artistic and clever, but if I am going to pay X amount of money for something, I want to know what it looks like before I buy. PLEASE doll companies, show the artsy fartsy photos if you have to, but also include a photo of the doll in its unadorned state.
Its because of this that I spend a lot of time seeking out box opening videos. Often it is the only way to see what a doll really looks like.

    23. Dollshe has me pretty annoyed right now. It was recently revealed that they haven't even done the preliminary 3-D printing work for the mature tinies they sold 3 years ago! I want the doll I ordered, but jeesh what an irresponsible way to do business.

    24. When a new BJD collector just buys all the preorders and new accessories for their dolls that won’t get to them till xx amount of months/ years then post them (or boast) in their social media accounts. Yes, I get that we get all excited and giddy when we get new dolls but geez, to post every single thing you just ordered is such a huge turn off for me. This collector does not even have a single doll in their hands yet and has like 9-10 dolls and counting on pre-order. I don’t know maybe just me but I noticed that they message people asking where did you get this and that.

      • x 1
    25. I'm curious, what are your pet peeves when it comes to BJDs? With the dolls, with the hobby, etc.

Personally, I cannot stand it when a doll can't sit up on its own. This is one of the major reasons why I'll sell dolls, because it bothers me that much. I tolerate this issue in one (1) doll, because she's my favorite :XD:

So what drives you all nuts?

      • x 3
    26. for me, I'd say it's the occasional head flopping. I know how to fix it/reduce it, but I got two dolls where fixes just don't work solidly enough cause of the way the neck joint is shaped.

      • x 2
    27. I'm sure I have more than the ones listed here, but:
      • O-face sculpts displayed in clothing and accessory listings in shops.
      • Chicken Dance arms: when a doll can't keep their arms straight or in another position, and keeps defaulting to bent elbows.
      • My Ringdoll boy's knees: they like to unlock when trying to get the dude to stand (wiring has helped this to a degree).
      • Finding trousers for my curvy girl, since most girl clothing is lolita, cutesy, for more slender frames, or focused on skirts, dresses or bikinis.
      • Discovering something clothing-wise that works perfectly for one of my crew—only to discover it's only available in a different scale than them.

      • x 12
    28. I’ll second the O-face sculpts for clothing models, it immediately turns me off the listing.

Dolls with deep eye walls that make it difficult to seat the eye correctly.

When my dolls are on display, I can’t stand it if a pose is unnatural. I have to fix it so they look comfortable.

      • x 5
    29. Pointy nipples.

I don't want to have to either give my doll a padded bra or take sandpaper to her so she can wear clothes without her nipples saying hello.

      • x 6
    30. YES. This also annoys me so much. I actually just traded for a doll with a sanded bust and it's fantastic. May do that to my others soon.

      • x 2
    31. Listings for clothing that are all "arty" photography and no plain straight-on full-length shots of the whole outfit/garment/whatever.

I want to know if the trousers fit to the waist or are low slung, but all the photos show it hidden an untucked shirt.
I want to know if the skirt comes to above or below the knee but all the shots are angled from above (or are with the doll seated), so you can't tell.... etc.

You are selling a garment - show off the garment not your sodding pretentions to arty-photography!!!

    32. I love Crobi dolls. I hate how unstable my SD boy is. Like, a light breeze will cause him to face plant because his legs are so skinny.

      • x 2
    33. Animal ears and human ears on one doll so the doll has 4 ears. Drives me bonkers. If they have animal ears they dont need human ones. Cosplays are fine, but if its obviosly not, no thank you. I can understand not wanting to cut off the human ears but at least try to hide the human ones with hair or something.

      • x 9
    34. Companies that don't show a blank face version of their doll yet the base price doll does not come with faceup. I especially hate it when the doll is limited so you can't even wait to see owner pictures since by then it will be long sold out.

Or to a more extreme, I cannot find a picture of the body for this doll anywhere.

      • x 10
    35. For dolls:
*Badly constucted joints. Especcially ones where a locking ledge has been put in in order to make the doll work at all. Like dolls with elbows that can only be full on straight of all the way bent, because of badly balanced joints and/or huge locks or dolls who only can stand at the cost of just about every other leg pose. I mind it a lot less on fantasy bodies where there is unusual problems to work around, but for regular humans there is no excuse. It's been done well by hundreds of artists, even me! It's basic ball joints, not brain surgery. I swear it's not that hard to get right.
This annoys me even more when the sculptor has tried to get fancy with the joints, like seriously, if yhou can't even master the basic ones, how does it seem like a good decision to complicate things? I've seen it in artist dolls (fine if it's the first one or two, we all start somewhere), in budget dolls (probably not enough profit made to defend the extra working hours to make it work better) and in higher cost an otherwise very well made dolls (this one always baffles me, but not all artists are good engineers and vice versa). But at some point it gets silly. When you cast a doll you duplicate all your hard work, thats's how profit is made despite the crazy amount of hours involved in the original sculpt, but if it's not well constructed you also duplicate the flaws.
With that said I have knowingly bought a number of dolls suffering from this because there were other redeeming features, but still!
*Sales pages that show a pretty picture of the doll, repeated from just sliiightly different angles about fifty times in huge sizes and then if you are super lucky there is like one straight on blank plicture of the head at the very bottom. And if there are measurements available they will be right there at the bottom too, so if you want to just pop in quickly to check something you have to wait for e-v-e-r-y s-i-n-g-l-e p-h-o-t-o to load before you can check them. And in just one of those pictures were slower to load, well, just when you found the bottom it shows up and you have to chase the measurements even further down the page.
And no undressed picture of the body, unless you are super lucky and you can find those in a separate listing for the body sold on it's own somewhere else on the site.

      For accessories:
*Sales pictures not showing the scale accurately. Most commonly in shoes available in several sizes, but only shown in the largest size in pictures to make it look in scale. And then you find out that the smaller sizes have the same size of eyelets, the same thickness of soles etc. and therefore look like clown shoes.
Or shirts that look fine in lager scale that are made in a smaller scale with the same size of buttons. :doh
Sometimes I am fine with compromises and sometimes I'm not and I want the data I need to make an informed decision.
*Vague and inaccurate sizing and measurements. Again, shoes are the big one, especcially for really small feet. For a big doll a few millimeters is not the end of the world, but if the entire foot is less than 20mm to begin with? Oh, you better believe it will matter.
Shopping online is always a little bit of a gamble, but the more good quality information I can get, the better the chances are for getting something that actually works for the intended doll.

So, to sum it up: I can excuse a lot of things, but I want to know what I are getting, what I am paying for and what to expect.

      • x 7
    36. - Excessive photoshopping on doll pics when shopping

      - ALL pictures being taken at weird angles and cropped weirdly so you can barely tell whats going on.

-Unnecessary parts in joints that make posing hard

-Lack of SD sized round glasses in the shops and easy for me to buy. Like seriously I see them everywhere, but cant find any I can actually buy. >:C

      • x 5
    37. It's so frustrating when the outfit is photographed from the front only. BJDs are cheap, and neither are a lot of clothing lines. If I'm going to pay a pretty penny, I want to know what it looks like from the side and back.

      • x 3
    38. Quite possibly the best typo I've seen in a long while.
I'm new to the hobby so no pet peeves yet!

      • x 4
    39. "Loli/Shota" themed doll sales images. No not Lolita fashion, the "fetish wear and hot pants/bared thighs and sexy faces" on dolls who look.... very underage... It's creepy. No way around it - I find that entire "Aesthetic" as a selling look extremely disturbing.

      • x 13
    40. Dolls sporting eyes that are too large for the sculpt.

Dolls with eyes that aren't placed correctly so--off-centered and/or "dead" eyed.

Sales posts that don't have clear, attractive pictures of what you're selling, and then sellers posting why they're items never sell.

      • x 1
    41. Wow! Lots of 'pet peeves' posted! I suppose when we pay so much, and wait so long, it can be annoying when something goes wrong! I get annoyed when a doll is shown from only one or two angles in the sales photos, or the doll is shown only with the clothes on! I sell on Etsy and it is just the basic, bare minimum to take a photo from all sides ( including the back)! I always feel that the seller must be hiding something if they aren't showing me the doll from all angles. I also get very annoyed if I've bought a full set and the clothing is ill-fitting. Once a jacket in a full set doll I purchased was the entirely wrong size and I couldn't even get it onto the doll! I had to use it on another, smaller doll. But then I don't really have the 'Full Set' I payed so dearly for and waited so long for!

      • x 2
    42. Thought of another one. Secondhand dolls sales where the listing says no clothes/wig/accessories/eyes included but the seller ONLY posts photos of the doll fully clothed. :sigh

      • x 14
    43. Sales where the head is being held in a bare hand. :abambi:

      • x 6
    44. Company photos for their doll's bodies taken in a dark/blurred settings, with next-to-nothing light just to set an unnecessary mood. Or dolls with long clothes like it's a photoshoot, with only a square centimeter of naked resin, and strategically posed limbs to hide a stark joint.
I get that a product's presentation should be as good as possible, but it should be *functional* to the customer's desires. I'm here for a body, let me see it!

      • x 6
    45. Buying a needed item for your new doll and it taking weeks to arrive. I bought a wig, in my own country, and it’s taking forever in the mail. I did another tracking this morning, and the wig just arrived in….Hawaii. I’m in Washington state. My poor bald girl, sigh. It seems that if I need it asap, it takes forever, and if I don’t care when it arrives, it arrives super fast.

      • x 2
    46. .....censoring naughty bits in sales photos. I mean, I understand the reasoning behind why they tend to get censored (it differs from location to location, which is often tied to cultural views on nudity and displaying naked bodies in any form of public venue), but I'd like to see all the details if I'm going to consider ordering the body.

Yes—this can play a factor in whether I'll get a body or not. If I'm looking for a male body that has magnetic/strung/detachable bits—I want to know this. Sometimes it might seem like those optional/detachable bits are available for a particular body, only to discover that the censoring/editing gave off the illusion of it—and that it's sculpted on instead. Also, I'm more keen to go for something with better detailed sculpting in that region over the tictac/Ken-ified effect.

There's a reason I was never fond of Barbie/Ken/fashion dolls in general, but have a fondness for bjds (besides the stringing).

      • x 7
    47. Getting surprises when you aren't expecting it can be either good or bad. Going with the body talk, my RingDoll has a strung peen and it wasn't noticable in the company photos. The photos were shadowed to hide bits... I had a good laugh when I got him, but pants are annoying to get.

    48. I moved not so long ago. Though I've labeled my boxes, there's still That One Doll Thing I can't locate.

    49. For me it’s definitely seeing a really cool sculpt then finding out that it’s sold out and the artist has retired. It’s rage inducing!!

    50. Dolls that are only available via lottery (looking at you, Volks!)

      • x 3
    51. I feel this so much. :doh

It would be really neat if somehow companies could have a video or animated image of the doll's head/body being rotated. I hate how misleading their photos can be!! That's why I always scour the internet for videos of people handling/reviewing dolls I'm thinking of buying.

    53. Tbh the 4 ears things also drives me crazy. Not only on dolls, but on artwork as well. I have SO many questions. Can they hear 2x as good? Do the ears fight for sound dominance? Are a pair of them fake?! But on a more serious note, I'm very tempted to sand off the ears of some of my dolls that the characters have animals ears I've either made or purchased for them but currently have their human ears hidden.

      • x 5
    54. I think my biggest pet peeve in this hobby is when there's a lack of communication in a transaction involving a doll company, dealer, or someone you are trading/commissioning/buying from. I consider myself to be a very patient person, but it bothers me when you're waiting weeks to get a response to an inquiry you made after already waiting months to send the initial inquiry because you were trying to be patient. I'll be happy even if the response is "I need more time," because at least I have the comfort of knowing what's going on.

The above and of course, when you pose a doll perfectly and they decide to move right before you snap the picture. :sweat

      • x 7
    55. Dolls with poor mobility are kind of my pet peeve. Especially if they can't sit up, look up/down, or have janky wrist joints.

    58. One thing that severely annoys me right now: whenever people talk about doll artists or certain dolls here on DoA, everyone and their grandma seems to link to Instagram for pics, and more and more doll artists seem to only have an Instagram and/or FB account where they post news and pics. Half of the time I can't even see the page without an account, most of the other half I can see the front page, but after 10 seconds of scrolling I get slapped with a popup saying "sign in or register if you want to see more". Same goes for lots of facebooks and tumblr accounts btw. I love finding out about new artists and dolls. I don't have Instagram (or any other social media). I don't want Instagram. I feel forced to make an Instagram account anyway just to be able to see the photos everybody links to. Bonus aggravation points if I google the artist in question and find out they have a perfectly accessible website/etsy, aka there was no real need to link (only) to their Insta in the first place.

      • x 10
    59. I didn’t want an Instagram or Facebook account either but I just made a separate doll email and simple social media accounts without using my real name to follow doll artists and companies I like. You can stay logged in and never have to sign in when you follow the links and a lot of artists and companies post on social media first so you never miss out on events or sales.
