Things that annoy you... *Rant Thread* - pt.2

Jul 12, 2017

    1. When "famous" (can you really be famous in this niche hobby?) or well-known/popular collectors accuse people of "copying" their dolls. And I'm not talking about carbon copy dolls (which do exist and I feel bad for the original owner for those).
This happened to a friend of mine today, who chose to switch their doll's gender (I had sent them some wigs and clothes and they liked them better as a boy than a girl). The popular collector (who they had been talking with/looked up to) took it as a direct copy against them, because they're apparently the ONLY PERSON who can have X brand of doll as a boy.

    2. wat.

Small peeve, but still: Hard-to-read fonts / sizes / colours in forums. I just don't get it. If you want a reply from people, why make it extra hard for them to read your post? :huh?:

    3. Cool sculpts and finding their limited.

      • x 27
    4. When people ask if a doll in a listing is legit. And you marked it as legit, posted a picture of the COA, etc. I get being worried, but straight up asking if something's a recast when I clearly wrote legit is irritating. I could understand if they wanted more pics/receipts/whatever, but I've only gotten that stupid basic question. UGH.

      • x 17
    5. I know it's totally irrational but my pet peeve is when so many preorders come out so close together. It is so hard for me to choose.

      • x 15
    6. It's not really a rant, but the most annoying aspect of the hobby for me is the long wait times and difficulty of getting almost everything related to dolls - not only the doll itself but the sealant, clothing, wigs, eyes, shoes, even elastic of the correct thickness, everything must be ordered from far away.

      • x 33
    7. I'm with you on this, and will add exceptionally poor grammar--not ESL, but things like l33tsp34k, txtspk, being soooooooooo speshul that you can't use real spellings, and the like. Similarly to the hard-to-read colors and sizes, it's not encouraging me to take you seriously as someone who wants a real response. The more conscious effort I have to put into reading your cutesy affectations in your posts, the more likely I am to just skip them and move on.

    8. I absolutely agree with this. And when posts have no punctuation. That just...drives me crazy, I hate trying to read posts like that. I know it's just a forum for a hobby, but it's nice to type professionally and show some effort, especially on sales posts.

Another small peeve for me is on sales posts when someone has a bunch of things like "I have pets, I have a varied shipping schedule, I have to have someone else drive me to the post office, etc." and have a bunch of other weird stuff concerning the sale, and their only explanation in the info section is like "I have a dog" and that's it. If there are weird things going on, I want to know about them! When you say varied shipping schedule, do you mean you'll only be able to ship on Mondays and Wednesdays, or that you go to the post office once a month? If you don't have a ride, can you get one easily? Or do you only have a ride to the post office every other week? Details, people! I'm fine with most of these things, but I need to know them before I inquire into a purchase.

    9. Yes I co-sign this! It's so astounding how long everything takes. It's worth it, and lovely and gives me a chance to save money and practice face-ups, but at the same time... so much money spent. So much waiting.

      • x 7
    10. The wait time from companies really annoys me too. It sometimes kills the hype for a doll, especially when you have to wait 6 months or a year. It can kill the hype enough that you find yourself falling out of love with the doll, if that makes sense. Especially if the company puts out lots of promotional pictures of it all up until the release.

      • x 17
    11. I'm sure someone's mentioned it before, but one of the reasons I'm trying to make my own clothes is that so many clothes for sale don't have measurements! What does "msd" or "1/4 scale" mean in this specific instance, because not all msd sized dolls are the same! When a single garment can be $20-$40, I'd like to know it it will actually fit my guys before I buy it.

      • x 34
    12. The scarcity of medieval fantasy clothing for dolls, cloaks are super easy to find but armor? tunics? LOTR inspired adventuring gear? arghhh. You have to comission it and dangit, I just wanna buy something off the shelf, I don't wanna have to design a costume every time.

Those confession blogs, they're just nasty. In fact, all of the tumblr bjd community. There's some really awful people there who are so elitist and judgemental and just.. eugh, sod those people. I have no time for cattiness and looking down on something someone else loves because you don't "see the value". Get out.

The wait times, they kill me. I'm not a patient person, I NEED instant gratification and UK dealers don't keep a lot of stock so impulse buys are tricky. I hate that "i have money and I want a doll but I want it nooooow" feeling, and then you search marketplaces and ebay but nothing you want comes up. *headdesk* the endless struggle lol.

The temptation. Preorder for this head you liked is up. they've rereleased a doll you liked. There's an event for this company you were umming and ahhing on. ARGHHHH. I need infinite money!

      • x 29
    13. I totally feel this. Finding pre-made historic/historic fantasy clothing is such a chore and there's generally a long wait for commissioned clothing, which is understandable, but I like the instant gratification of being able to buy in stock clothing so my dolls aren't naked for a year.

Which brings a mini rant of my own on that topic. All my dolls require commissioned outfits! Many have styles that just aren't easily found pre-made or in stock, the rest have weird body sizes that practically nobody has. It's frustrating enough that many are naked since I'm a weenie when it comes to actually approaching shops/commission-takers about actually commissioning things.

      • x 8
    14. RIGHT!?? And I am a terrible seamstress so IU really would rather throw money at someone to do it for me but the only options seem to be a huge long wait, really unreliable people or a price tag that'd buy a whole new doll erp.

Sorry but I cannot justify £50 for a CAPE. I don't care how nice it is, it's a cape!
      I'm cheap.
      which... really doesn't help hahahaha.

I'm gonna need a fantasy outfit for my new boy and he's enormous (70cm) and I still can't find anything *headdesk* not even expensive stuff.

    15. My biggest pet peeve is waiting. Waiting for everything! Waiting months for a doll I want to work on now, waiting for clothing, eyes, wigs, shoes. Waiting for good weather for face ups. Waiting for monthly payments to save for a doll. Looks like I picked the wrong hobby. :sweat And yet, here I am, still waiting....

      • x 16
    16. One pet-peeve I've recently developed is people not updating their entries on waitlists.

How are folks supposed to get a feel for how long they should expect to wait if no one else modifies the list when they get a shipping notice / their doll is delivered???

      • x 4
    17. Hell yes I agree with everything you said and I totally understand about getting paid once a month!!! It sucks!!! I have one more payment on my layaway for my Unidoll Dalia but I don't get paid until the 3rd. Luckily the store is in the US so once I make the last payment they she be shipping her same day or next day. Then I should have her 2 to 3 days after that.

Then I will have to wait to get money to buy her clothes. I hate being poor!!! Wish I could sell my soul for a few million.:)

    18. Dirty dolls on the marketplace. Seeing this a lot lately. And I don't mean staining, but like, crusty gunk. Yuck. How hard is it to give them a little wipe with a damp cloth?

      • x 8
    19. How long fedex takes to actually deliver a package once it's shipped. Three hours ago, my dolls left a facility an hour away and I'm so impatient, I just want them here before I have to leave.

      • x 1
    20. Yep, this salty bean has yet more to complain about.

I've recently been very annoyed with trying to track packages. In the past six months, I've had at least 3-4 packages for which the tracking number was either copied wrong, or given with the wrong company, or was never updated, or just straight up didn't work at all, and it's super annoying. I'm not even someone that checks my tracking a lot, but if it's been a while and I want to check it, I'd like for it to work. (And now my tracking number from Dollits seems like it's not working... I'm just gonna hope it hasn't been put into the system or whatever yet. I don't care as much for accesstoes, but with $59 shipping for a full doll, this tracking needs to work. :sigh)

      • x 6
    21. Posties who don't knock when they are supposed to deliver your package, even though your package is WITH THEM IN THEIR TRUCK, and just leave the note that says "Whoops we needed a signature and you weren't home so I didn't leave the box, come out to our post office and get it yourself" You slidey snake i was totally home!! You never even bothered to see if I was!! You just dodged your job and snuck off with my package!!

      • x 29
    22. Oh man do I feel this. My old postman used to not even pull packages off the truck, would pass by my door, not knock and just leave a slip. I caught him once, confronted him about it and he sheepishly said 'yeah, I have it, but I didn't pull it off the truck. Uh. I need to finish my rounds before I go back to my truck and deliver it to you.' Boy was I mad :D

      • x 6
    23. When sellers attempt to charge the buyer paypal fees or attempt to convince them to use friends and family by knocking a few bucks off the doll price.

      • x 13
    24. oh gosh I HATE tracking too! There is ONE company, ONE who gives useful tracking. I think it's DPD, they have gps on their trucks so it knows where the truck IS so on their website you can actually see exactly where it is on a map and it tells you "your delivery is number 200, driver is currently delivering delivery 87. your order should be with you by this estimated time" and it'll give you an hour slot.
WHY can't more companies do that!?? We have the technology!
instead you get "your delivery will be delivered some time between 7am and 7pm" and it's like "well, looks like I don't leave the house all day then".
      It's SO UNHELPFUL!

And then you sit around all day waiting, getting more and more annoyed.

      I hate it.

WHY can't we have gps on the dang trucks that tells us if they're close so we know if we have time to pee or put laundry out in the back yard or go get milk from the shop!

As for paypal fees, this seems to be a fairly new one and it seems to be people who don't understand how to price stuff. your price INCLUDES the paypal fee you idiot! If you need the extra few bucks, add them to the price of the doll! it's not hard! It's actually the simplest thing in the freaking world.
      Morons.
      Just.. eugh.
      *headdesk*
Maybe it's an American thing that, you guys add tax at the till right? So you don't pay the price on the shelf, you pay that plus tax. I don't understand that, see, the rest of the world just includes the tax in the price so it's waaaaay simpler. Paypal fees should be like that, just included in the price. Surely? Because to do it the other way is illogical and stupid and confusing and just a great way to con people out of an extra few bucks.

    25. When something literally like an hour away takes ALL DAY to ship and still doesn't get to you that day

      • x 5
    26. ...the waiting IS the hardest part...I have to echo everyone else's sentiment; there seems to be NO aspect of this hobby that doesn't involve waiting...grrrr!!!! And the OOAK nature of BJDs does present SO many challenges/expenses on top of that...good thing we love 'em so much!

      • x 4
    27. This whole Photobucket issue. I don't have a Flickr account and when I tried to sign up today, I never got the activation email. I really want to sell a doll, but I can't list her until I get this straightened out. It's such a pain.

      • x 3
    28. The toxicity of spray sealant and sealant in general. I understand that you can use mask but I still worry about basically everything involved. Like, what if I don't realize that I need to replace the filters? What if the sealant seals the area around me? What if I harm some small creature accidentally?
I live in area with a lot of wild life that's right next to a corn field and I happen to have some very sensitive animals that should live outside. There's this creeping fear in the back of my mind of accidentally disturbing or poisoning some living thing (environment or animal) that's kept me from even trying to spray sealant. Because of that I can't do faceups which is something I've really wanted to do for a while. I feel like if I try it'll be a ride of non-stop anxiety and sleep loss.

But hey, at least there's the alternatives. I don't really want to buy an airbrush just for sealant, but at least it wouldn't contain cancerous chemicals that will destroy your lungs and might kill you :huh?:

Also I recognize that I have a tendency to over think things and I didn't write this because I want someone to convince me and I'm basically surrendered to the fact that I'll probably never be comfortable using sealants unless they significantly change.

      • x 12
    29. This happens to me all the time! We live in a walk-up, and even though it's only the second floor, they don't want to tackle the stairs, so they just sneak away. If tracking is accurate enough and I'm home, sometimes I camp on the steps so I can come down to them and sign in the driveway so they can't make me miss the delivery, the lazy so-and-sos... I cover 13 miles on foot during some work days, surely they can trudge up a flight of stairs with a 5-lb box now and then. >>

      • x 4
    30. @KlanceKlanceRevolutn
I totally agree with you! I don't really plan to do faceups or mods any time soon, but things like this and the toxicity of resin dust really discourage me from trying. I don't think it would stop me completely if I was really determined, but it is something that I'd have to give serious thought to.

Something you might consider is constructing a sealant spray booth (which could be used inside, or outside for even more safety). From what I understand (I could be wrong), you basically make a box with gloves attached on the inside, then you seal the box and use the gloves to spray the sealant inside, where it eventually settles and doesn't leech into the surrounding environment. (Something like an inside sandblasting booth, except for sealant.) Maybe you've already seen something like this, but it might be worth looking into if you'd really like to try faceups!

      • x 3
    31. @KiyoshiSenshi thank you so much! I haven't really seen any sealant spray booths but from the look of the sandblasting booth it definitely looks like something I'll have to research and read more on. This is really helpful, thanks!

    32. My biggest pet peeve would probably be a lack in communication with sellers sometimes. I get life happens but still.
For example, if I am buying a doll second hand on layaway, I have specific days I can make payments. So sometimes there is a decent gap between payment days so I try to send a message or two in the middle to let them know I am still alive and still interested in the doll with no response from them.

      • x 2
    33. Oh man I love threads like this  where to even begin!? I might as well make numbered list.

      1. Sellers on etsy who list their clothes as MSD/minifee. B**ch unless it's a lace up item or it has a lot of elastic it's not going to fit both standard msds and minifee. Minifee already have the lions share of the clothing market on etsy, you do not need to falsely label your clothes msd to get even more views on them. Quit playin'.

      2. Doll companies that use photoshop/wiring/other assorted trickery to make their dolls do poses they can't actually do without 'editing'. This includes artfully arranging items around the doll to obscure the fact that you have to dislocate it's joints to achieve that pose.

      3. Buying shoes for limwha minis and tiny. Girls why you gotta have such weird feet, nothing fits you!

      4. Minifee's owning the market for doll clothes. If it's pretty and handmade chances are it's for minifee. If you have a standard msd and don't want to dress it in outdated lolita or cheap taobao stuff your SOL. :sigh

      5. Bad or non existent photos in sales threads. Seriously I like in a tiny dark ancient house and I still manage to get passable photos of things I put up for sale. And for goodness sake, spend a $5 on a Styrofoam ball and wooden dowl so you can display doll wigs your selling off the floor where they look like a dead rat :doh

      6. People who sell bjd 'clothing lots' that consist of maybe 1 or 2 pieces that were actually made for bjd and a ton of tatty play line doll clothes and ask a $100 and title the listing stuff like '45 pieces bjd clothing lot!' This mostly happens on ebay :|

I've got way more than this but I'll let some others complain for a while

      • x 15
    34. Oh man, I feel this too.

Which leads me to a similar whine, msd sized clothing never being in the msd measurements I need/msd sizes being so vastly different between companies.
I love my dollzone msds, not so much trying to buy bottoms for them, nobody stocks pre-made clothing in their size and the only other size I found that fits also isn't all that easy to find in-stock. My poor boy is still pantsless

      • x 2
    35. I've seen this too about listing everything to fit minifee. I have slim MSD's. Just say "slim" MSD's.

Also why are MSD pants so freaking expensive? It feels like girls clothes are cheaper then the boys clothes too?

      • x 2
    36. Oh man, so you have the 009 MSD DZ body? Those hips are such a pain! I was gonna buy modern clothes for Ilya, but now he only stays in the outfit I made for him because there's nothing in his size and the only thing I ordered custom made turned out...less than great. So yeah. Weird measurements. Annoying.

(Also companies that have dolls with weird measurements and then don't offer "normal" clothing for them. DZ pretty much only has fullsets, which aren't the style I want and are really expensive. Even just some basic jeans or pants would be great...)

      • x 1
    37. I get annoyed when I position the eyes just perfectly, then put the headcap and wig back on just to see that one eye managed to slip just enough to look wonky. Or when I've been taking pictures and really like the poses, etc, just to realize 20 photos in that there is a stray hair going across the face that I didn't see until I hit a certain angle :sigh

      • x 15
    38. Too many dolls intentionally sculpted with severe pelvic tilt and/or lumbar lordosis of the spine.
Unless I need a character who has that problem, I'd prefer if not ALL my dolls were forced by their artists to have what is actually a really awkward and often painful spinal problem. Heavily tilted hips causing an sharply arched lower back and "artistically" turned in knees might be "coy" or "sexy" to "traditional BJD aesthetic" but once you know what you're looking at it's really annoying that they all seem to have it to some degree of severity when it's not nearly so common in actual people, and generally a trouble that requires therapeutic intervention.

      • x 13
    40. @KiyoshiSenshi I do! I have two of them, one luckily has an outfit done, I altered a sd top to work as a tunic. The poor other though, he's a modern dude. eue I swear, everything pink and frilly is minifee only sized

    41. In my old apartment, UPS was exactly like this. They didn't deliver a single thing! I actually didn't order something I wanted, because it had to be kept cool and I never would have gotten it before the package warmed to the point of destroying it.

The post man was like that, too, until the day when I reamed the office and they sent him back. I had a talk with him, and after that, if I was home I got my packages.

I'm not sure that the actual concern is carcinogens as much as it is "this will also seal your lungs," but either way it does disperse rather quickly and is likely going to do less harm to your wildlife than the chemical herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers used in the corn field. :) But if you aren't comfortable, you aren't comfortable. Maybe find another excuse for the airbrush so you can justify it? ;)

And for a rant, I wish I had more TIME. I have a blushing job I need to finish, and some clothes I'm working on, but I'm also working long hours and out of town for two days (I'm in the truck right now, in fact) so I can't touch either one.

    42. I agree completely with this, and also things labeled "SD13" that don't fit my Volks SD13. yes, I understand that Volks standard sizes have become a catch-all for all BJDs in that size, but if it specifically says SD13 or SD17 or another Volks specific size, then I expect it to fit a Volks doll in that scale. I bought something once that was labelled as fitting SD13 and similar, but it was wayyyy too tiny for my doll. Turns out they used a super skinny ResinSoul as a model, but called it SD13 because it was the same height as SD13. Ummm...that doesn't work and it's very misleading.

    43. The worst thing for me is dolls that are fully customized but have no faceups. Especially when there are no plans to get the face made up. Like why go through the trouble of getting everything customized and then just use a blank face? There are people who prefer dolls without faceups but I just don't get it.

      • x 3
    44. I've got another one. Lack of funds! Not just for dolls, but supplies too! I want to get an airbrush system to do face ups. By the time I save enough, it will be winter and too wet and cold for face ups. Looks like my dolls will be blank until next summer. :|

      • x 3
    45. That as time goes on, more and more items/clothing are made exclusively for fairyland dolls. Whargh! Used to be you could only find Volks sizes, and now all I can find are MNF. I don't own either of those!

Further insult to injury: Finally found DC clothes... for the wrong body type. :doh

Oh well, guess I'd better get the sewing machine back out.

      • x 5
    46. Companies who don't give side view of the sculpts in their listings. Like, why!? You have eighteen 3/4 shots at slightly different angles, just move your blasted camera an inch to the right! Don't make me dig endlessly in your listings for the heads. If you've got the heads listed separately and if they have the side shots. It'd also be helpful if you posted at least one image of the nude sculpt. And also had a shot of your available resin colours somewhere, preferably easy to access and locate.

Related, poor site design. (Lookin' at you, Mint on Card.) And a little bit websites that don't hire copy-editors, though I do kinda understand both points.

Being unable to find nice/historical (or, "historical") YoSD clothing, or YoSD sized items. I'm legitimately thinking about upping my sewing game to be able to sell some just so that there's something on the market, but uhm, yeah... Also, totally in agreement about the difficulty of finding sealant. :sigh

    47. Why do so many characters decide to pop up when I decide to get a new doll? I just wanna save up a whole ton just for dolls + doll accessories so I can buy them all en mass and trick them out. Buut I don't think that'd plausible.

And then there's resisting the urge to impulse buy.

      • x 5
    48. -When a company doesn't sell the head and body separately ( Looking at you crobidoll! ... this still might not stop me from buying a Lance though.., XP ) Speaking of, I'd also like a choice as to which M or R line body I can get....
-Lack of fantasy props and armor
-How expensive bjd pets are Q3Q
-Having a hard time finding owner pics of dolls that I'm interested in
-Super limited dolls with a really short order window, I try my best not to make impulse buys so I like to have time to ponder and think about what I would do with the doll.

Honestly these are just little things though haha, more to do with my lack of funds than anything =q=ll

    49. THIS. There have been so many times that I've thought "yes, this doll looks perfect for my character, the nose is just right!" Then I go and google the doll's head because there aren't any side view pictures of it on the company's website. And I go "WOAH THERE what is that nose??" I like big and different looking noses on dolls, but it's super misleading when you thought the doll had an anthill for a nose and it turns out to be a rocky mountain.

    51. my pet peeves are when clothes/wigs/eyes/shoes doesn't fit!! clothes.. well, if you are talented, you can bring your sewing machine, but with eye gaps and shoes, you realize that you just wasted 30-50 dollars...

    52. And then the seller is dumb enough to SAY the PayPal fees are included in the price! That's still ME paying YOUR fee that you have agreed you would pay. I read that and move on.

    53. One that's bothered me for a long time now... People who throw every tiny question that comes to them into General Discussion, regardless of whether it belongs there, whether it already exists somewhere, whether it's already been answered a dozen times. For Pete's sake, do at least a little research before posting, even if it's just to discover forums that exist outside GD.

    54. I am mildly annoyed by the high prices on doll furniture. Like...I know you're paying for materials and the artist's time, but some prices are just so high, it seems kind of ridiculous. And even to myself it's like "Well, if you don't want to pay that much, then make it yourself!" But sometimes I'd just like to buy something that's decently made and not like $200+ for a little loveseat or something. Maybe I'm just whiny.
      ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    55. Wonky eyes, messy hair, rumpled clothes and blurry photos that don't improve over time. It's not maybe a peeve so much as a problem I kept seeing so I'm doing a photography experiment to write an article about it to help people just starting out and only using a cell phone...kind of like others have advised, inspired and helped me to improve with so much too! So what started as a gripe and pet peeve of mine has actually become a really fun project.

    56. Nah your not whiny. I used to pine over stuff like the couches Dollmore makes (used to make? I haven't been on their site in years) until I found the stuff that fit my dolls. I was at a pottery store and found two planters shaped like benches. Some cardboard cut out and covered in felt and then wrapped in fabric according to season and they're perfect for my dolls to perch upon. (They also fold flat so I could put them in my duffle bag for meetups) Found a funky orange lawn chair that's MSD size that is also supposed to be for plants - but it fits my dolls so perfectly. Found a fainting couch at a dollar store that's actually a jewelry box for my yo-sd girls too. It's all about what you want and what your willing to pay for it. My benches cost me ten - for both as they were on clearance. My chair cost me about 8... It was so worth it.

(edit: http://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/LnwAAOSwlXhZYqXM/s-l1600.jpg Something like this. Mine are collapsible and iron looking but this is the rough idea)

    57. Okay... Something that actually pisses me off.

WHY THE HELL DOES TUMBLR NOT REMOVE NSFW OF ACTUAL THINGS BUT INNOCENT STUFF GETS MARKED IT? I just mass uploaded a bunch of doll pics to my tumblr and now I see they've been marked as NSFW.

None of them were naked, nor doing anything crude.

    58. This reminds me of something that annoys me, when you finally find the exact photos you need for some sort of reference and it has an unremovable nsfw filter over it because you don't have an account. It makes some sense why this happens and honestly I think to some degree it's a good idea, but when I'm trying to look at how one doll body compares to another, I really don't want to have to make an account I'll never use just to see that one picture.

    59. Seriously. That drives me insane. Or you find that it's for a profile that's private so viewing it is not an option at all. Just confused me why my pictures had it. It got corrected thankfully but it seemed weird.

(Took me forever to find refs of a doll body I was looking at. It wound up being nothing like what I expected and I switched sculpts completely.)
