Things about this hobby that you find hilarious?

Apr 30, 2021

    1. While not exclusive to this hobby, as it's quite popular in Japan for general things, the lotteries for the chance to buy a doll. While I do prefer them to the alternatives personally, it's a bit funny to step back and think "I'm getting all wound up over the chance to be able to buy a $800+ doll" which honestly eases my anxiety about some of them.

    2. OK... It was bugging me, so I went and searched and found the doll I mentioned. She was called the Bleu Citron and produced by Notdoll Labs... still disturbs me just a bit...

    3. As a sort of newbie to the hobby, I didn't really think about this until now, but today I picked up the mail and pulled the tiniest pair of underwear out of a box which felt absolutely comical. I had ordered a pair of briefs for an upcoming doll a little bit ago (because I didn't want him to sit around totally naked when he arrives while I decide on his outfits) and I think I forgot about it because I was sitting there baffled for a moment like..., why on earth did I order miniature tighty-whities...

A new experience to get used to, forgetting what you ordered and finding out it's doll underwear LOL

    4. Did you see that Amazon review that went viral, where a couple bought a kitchen table, thinking it was a really great price - but there weren't any dimensions listed? (It was 1/12 scale, lol.)

      • x 4
    5. I totally agree. I see photos of people's dolls which are obviously something they are proud to show off, but the eyes are really wonky, pointing in different direction, etc. Did they not look at their doll before taking that photo and posting it?

I find the cyclops dolls weird and humorous. Makes me think WTF?

    6. So, I was looking through some posts in the projects section on the forum, and 3D printing came up in a few threads. This ended up leading my mind down a rather—interesting rabbit hole...

So—I have a love and appreciation for male bjds with those adjustable manbits. There's been more than a few occasions where I sought out bodies for hybridizing with that particular concept in mind. A couple of the ones I did receive...they're limited with the available options—one a direct from company that arrived with general manbits in two different sizes, another arrived from secondhand with only the default option included. I've thought about ordering sets from DF-H/DF-A (can't recall, maybe both offer them) as replacements, but there's the possibility of requiring mods to make them work—

But then...a thought occurred to me. As mentioned in the beginning of this comment, it arrived to me through the magic of 3D printer conversation. "A 3D printer could come in handy—I could sculpt some of those needed replacement bits myself in a 3D program..." I think you'll get where that train of thought is going.

Manbits make collecting bjds so much fun:XD::lol::sweat:kitty2

    7. What's funny to me are the cutesy food names for bjds. You see this a lot with anime-style dolls, and it really makes me want to get a cutesy anime doll and name her something not cute at all. Forget Momo, Macaron, Cherry. Name your doll Cheeseburger. French Onion Soup. Sardines. Purina Dog Chow.

    8. Every hobby has its amusing traits and it’s eye rolling cringe worthy traits. I’m with the others who mentioned conversations with non BJD people as giving more than a few laughs…..

I was talking to a friend on Skype ages ago whilst changing out the eyes on one of my dolls unbeknownst to her. Suddenly I disappeared from view and all she could hear was me scrabbling about and swearing to myself.

Friend: What on earth are you doing? You ok?

Me: Yes, sorry my eyes fell out and rolled under the desk!

      Friend: Your what?!!

      Me: My eyes….oh hang on, I found one…damn it…it’s a bit dusty now…..

      Friend: How the hell?!….

Me: Oop found the other one…..just stood on it…yup it’s ok. *scrabbles back onto chair and sees rather shocked and confused look on friend’s face* Quick wipe and it’ll be fine to pop back in.

      Friend: *blank stare*

Me: Doll eyes…..I dropped my doll’s eyes as I was changing them and talking to you…….there…done….now to reattach the back of her head……

Friend: You’re a special kind of strange aren’t you *laughs*

    9. oh no!!!!! I feel called out!!! Two of my anime dolls are sister and brother Eclaire and Millefeuille... French onion soup totally gave me an idea though... so now we've just got to have a Potage Parmentier join the gang!!!

    10. Two words for adult male BJD's: removable/replaceable....hooha's (I might get in trouble by saying the correct name:eusa_naug).

    11. We're surely all the same kind of immature because frankly the Detachable Option Parts never stops being funny! *Especially* the April Fools/silly versions one company made, I can't recall who. Or the one that's a "Handy" part.

    12. This thread is great! I'm dying :XD:

So, to add to the topic of magnificent detachable eggplants, I showed a friend my new Dollshe boy and she cracked up at the sight of him... and has since encouraged me to add gloss to his nipples and eggplant to accentuate their qualities... :XD:

As for my experiences handling him so far, he is strung rather loosely I think, and his thighs tend to spread out awkwardly when I least expect it. Always gives me a chuckle, especially considering that the character he is supposed to represent flusters rather easily :XD:

      • x 4
    13. Based on the above, I think nipple-glossing might just be the funniest-sounding activity ever, in the doll hobby or not. :XD:

      • x 5
    14. Also based on the above, I can somewhat tolerate nipple-glossing on male sculpts since it's normal for them to be displayed shirtless. But glossing the....eggplants?

Excuse me while I go rolling on the floor in laughter. :XD::XD::XD:

    16. Apart from the many things allready metioned so... I think unplanned/unexpected movement is one of thos things that never stops being funny.
I had a doll that had a slightly unbalanced elbow (long since fixed now) and she had a tendency to snap her arm into a bent position. A combination of how her hands are posed and the shape and distance of things made it so that she more than once suddenly appeared to be picking her nose. The first time it happened was when I was a very new BJD owner. I had just posed her for a photo, went to get the camera and when I come back, she sits there with the finger up her nose and I swear she looked guilty. :XD:

Another time a friend had their dolls over and one of their dolls constantly snapped her armes upp as if to defend herself whenever one of my male dolls was posed close. There was one time where we left all the dolls posed together as if the were just hanging out and when we came back a little later it seriously looked as if this doll was trying to fend mine off. We had a very good laugh about that.

A third instance of unplanned movement was during the award ceremony during the first BJD convention I ever went to. One of the dolls on display suddenly had a part that came loose from its display and without missing a beat, the ceremony stopped until the owner was located and could go and rescue her doll, then everything continued as if nothing had happend. The non doll people that were there as helpers found that very funny.

I could go on, but I'm sure many people here have similar experiences with dolls that refuse to behave when dressed in clothes they "don't like" or tend to fall over when paired with a certain other doll or similar.

    17. "I have a bunch of floating heads" is a perfectly understandable statement.

      • x 3
    18. Going to agree with the original poster the fact I have some detachable male genitalia because of my dollies does make me laugh.

      Also the floating eyes.

      • x 1
    19. One of my favorite things are purposely bad hybrids :XD: Like a small, baby-faced, bug eyed head on a very big muscular body, or the other way around, a chad head with square jaw on a too small baby body. When their resin match is perfect it's even more funny!

Also trying to put eyes into a doll and getting all sorts of possessed + creepy expressions before I get it right.

And definitely conversations about detaching heads and changing eyes around non-doll people, for example in a public transport. Their side eye and confusion is amusing, but it also makes me want to loudly announce that we talk about dolls, so they won't have to wonder what that was about for days (or a lifetime xD)

    20. On the one hand, I appreciate Dikadoll's commitment to realism.
On the other - why sculpted bum hole?

      • x 6
    21. I imagine there have been many "but why?" reactions in this hobby :XD: I had the same reaction to my Dollshe boy's very detailed pee hole.

      • x 5
    22. I get a chuckle out of the fact that I just have a bunch of eyes sitting on my desk at this very moment. Also, like people have already said, things like, "I have a bunch of floating heads" or "I've got a body in the mail" makes me crack up :XD:

      • x 3
    23. I have a horrible confession to make! I think that the fact that anime BJDs can have sculpted genitalia ALONE is hilarious to me! I don't know why, but I think it's because they are so stylized that I think it's weird in a funny way!

      • x 2
    24. I showed one of my friends the inside of my doll's head, explaining that I had to reglue a magnet, and he said it looked scary.
I asked which part: the backs of the eyes, the s hook, the elastics or the eye putty?
      His answer: yes

At least it was in good humour and not outright fear!

      • x 6
    25. The ability to freak out your friends simply for owning one. x3
The funniest thing is changing clothes of one in front of a friend who's not into dolls, and they flip out in laughter! Oh no a penis! The horror! XD Never gets old!

      • x 10
    26. I may have gotten some wide-eyed reactions to blithely announcing that I got a head in a box in the post today.

    27. Just visited RingDoll website recently and they have a rather interesting set of optional....hoohas for sale (I might be late in the news but what in the bluest of hecks were they thinking!?!) :doh:aeyepop:

    28. ... :XD::XD::XD: I don't even have the words for what this is. What were they thinking indeed. :XD:

    29. Definitely penises on dolls, and those full-body blushes complete with a "happy trail".

      • x 3
    30. Recently it these pictures from fairyland showing their mermaid/seahorse hesitating "which tail to pick".

I mean, that's suppose to be their body right? But they make them look like shopping for cloths. Imagine you are shopping for your legs part and say "Oh, I'd rather have a model leg, let's try swap out my chubby cutie legs"

      • x 17
    31. I saw these too! Though it didn't quite occur to me that way. Now that you point it out, well... :XD: I guess the dollies aren't too fussed about being pulled apart and rearranged?

      • x 3
    32. I find it funny when I write emails or PM to people that the body they bought has been shipped, or when I go to post office back when they knew me better asking what is in this box and I reply, a head only to have other customers look at me weird.

      • x 2
    33. My sister gets a kick out of whenever I ask her If she wants to see the head that I got in the mail.
Talking about dolls and doll parts around other people who have no clue is always funny. Things I've said around others include:
"I'm making eyeballs", "I have all the eyeballs, do you want to see?", "Hold on, I need to remove this head."
And I couldn't resist showing my fiance the literal bag of dicks I received with one of my dolls.

      • x 5
    34. I received a pair of eyes and hands in the mail the other day, the idea of which my partner was pretty weirded out by. He agrees that "foot-ball" sounds just as odd though, if you really think of it, so I guess both of our hobbies involve body parts.

    35. My ex had a bit of a doll phobia. He was ok with me keeping my dolls in a separate room, but when I was sewing doll clothes and the little model was patiently waiting on the dining room table, I got a lot of "Ah!"s and "The eyes look like they're staring at me!"

It's not my fault glass eyes look so lovely and lifelike...

    36. @cleverLC - I am shamelessly stealing this post by @blizzard-of_az and reposting it here:

    37. I have a friend who love doll so much but afraid of the eyes that follow. He's ok with my doll, as long as they are in my house(not his) or in photos I show him though. (I'm... Er, quite a fan of eyes that follow haha)

He end up using only glittering/jewel resin/urethane eyes that's not humanlike so they won't follow. (So, the love for dolls win, and his collection is wonderful in my op.)

      • x 4
    38. So my sister has a Soulkid, and Souldolls come with those dynamic eyes that seem to move so they're always looking at you. My sister and I share a bedroom, and somehow the doll always ends up watching me from across the room with this slightly disconcerting glint in her eyes. What made it even funnier is that she recently got jointed hands, so sometimes I turn around and this doll is glaring at me with her fist raised like she's about to come for me... it's resulted in a lot of laughs. :mwahaha

    40. For real! These moobs (PS. Thanks for the new word! :XD:) suddenly reminded me of that horribly drawn Captain America comics where they are so....un-proportionally big.

    41. Ah, yes—the Rob Liefeld bulging moobs and funky shaped feet (amongst other exaggerated features). If someone really wanted to encapsulate that era into bjd form, this body would be the perfect fit

    45. I freaking love that body. I call it the big bara tiddies body. TD knows wassup. Why get a magnetic snake weiner that no one can see? when you could have mommy man cleavage out on display with the girlies? :thumbup

    47. Speaking of the "Male mum" body... am I the only one who is seeing his hooha attachments? One of them has two different kinds of hoohas in one! He really -is- a male mum!

      • x 3
    48. YES the Rob Liefeld art of that one era in comics! (His more recent stuff is more typical proportions as I understand)

I have seen a lot of art for the Male/Male Audience, as it were, do stylization a bit like this, so clearly there's some people who do want a character shaped like this. ANY variation we can get in body shapes is always great, IMO. Something for everyone.

But does the body also have further options for the Optional Parts? That's actually pretty cool if so. I love anything that lets collectors more easily customize their doll.

      • x 5
    49. Really?? :aeyepop: Come to think of it, the censored part of the picture where the hooha is supposed to be looks kind of...vacant (or maybe, something else can be attached there aside from the regular hoohas).

      • x 1
    50. Sorry... I got the two bodies mixed up. The one I was thinking was the new DZ 77cm body.
He comes with a new set optional JJ parts. And one of them... well, let's just say, it took me way too long to figure out that it's two hoohas in one!

    51. I love how we are a group of adult collectors of dolls with fully rendered anatomy, still almost all of us (myself included) will censor ourselves when we talk about our dolly's personal bits
Why yes, it's perfectly normal to blush the hoo-ha, dingaling collection, and headlights, it's for realism! Because we're adults okay! but please do not say these icky words in front of my resin children :( They are too freshly casted for "the talk" :...(

About the hybrid doohickeys, I have a friend in this special category of m/m fandom, some of her dolls must have an upgrade in their future :thumbup

    52. One thing I find funny is only tangentially BJD-related. For the last few years, around Halloween, Michael's craft stores have been offering plastic doll eyes as "embellishments." They even have (easily removed with no issues) foam adhesive bits for sticking them to scrapbook pages.

I have tested with an OT doll and can confirm that if you really wanted to, you could use them in an SD-sized doll head with no issues. You usually end up with a couple individual eyes that don't have a match, but considering I basically got 6 pairs of eyes for about $5 on sale, you can't beat the price!

"Your doll has such lovely pink eyes, where did you get them?" "Halloween display at the craft store."

    53. Yes dolls losing their pipis is hysterical unless you have to sell them and then how on earth you post blahblahblah sd for sale 1 of 2 pipis or no pipis available cause they just got lost somewhere :doh:whee::XD::XD::XD:
The other thing I find hysterical is the casualty in which we speak about floating heads .... I swear that if I told that I have tens of doll floating heads in house even the most open minded of my aqquintances whould got unnerved but yea it's an everyday bjd thing , floating heads , heads waiting for bodies , bodies waiting for heads etc !!!:lol::lol:

    54. Seeing posts on different social media with titles like "Help me identify this body" lol

      • x 12
    55. Oh huh you're right? You could use it for a transgender or intersex character if they had those parts. That's actually kind of cool to include more body part types if people are into having those, so they don't have to customize.
