Things about this hobby that you find hilarious?

Apr 30, 2021

    1. Similar to the thread about funny BJD stories: /threads/funny-bjd-stories.782094/

Is there anything in this hobby you never stop finding funny?

There are rant threads and horror stories. I want to start a thread about the more amusing aspects to collecting BJDs. (Please! This is not to make fun of anybody! Just hoping to inspire some light-hearted silliness.)

I'll go first - I think detachable male doll genitalia is hysterical. I read somewhere else that one collector used all of their "extras" as refrigerator magnets, which - I would love to see a picture of that.

Also - the "no splits" when people are listing heads only in Marketplace. I know it's a requirement, but I always giggle at the visual of a buyer and seller agreeing to a split and then arguing over which way to slice a head. With a cake knife, of course.

      Anyone else?

    2. Penis doll. I can't remember who makes them, but they are cute and hilarious!

    3. I find the height difference in different companies hilariously frustrating honestly...
You’d think if someone tells you “my doll is 50cm” from one company and another person from a different company goes “my doll is also 50cm” they would be the same height but no.... not true based on the company...

I’ve seen so many comparisons in height from a simple 4 cm off and how MASSIVELY different it is.

    4. I find it a little funny (and a bit frustrating) how doll clothes and accessories are more expensive than human ones. And the funnier thing is, I’ve reached a point where I don’t even bat an eye when I see the prices (just add to cart, head empty). My sister saw how much I paid for a dress once and almost had a heart attack:XD:

    5. So, so many things...
Mino using her guy-doll's spare "bits" as fridge magnets very much among them.

      "press papilla good feel"...

The doll that looks like anatomy...

      HZ's weird little chibi-dudes...

Ours is a strange hobby.

    6. Yeah definitely the jointed male parts. :XD: I have the extra part for my Dollshe Mystic body in a box with extra hands and stuff, and I laugh every time I'm looking for something and come across it.

    7. @BlackCatNova seriously. $45 for jeans for me? Are you crazy?
$45 for jeans for a 40 cm doll? Add to cart.

@Haru's cat maybe you should put it on your fridge! At least you'd always know where it was!

    8. Often people talking about mods they did make it sound like some kind of horror story, until you realise it’s about a doll. Taking such quotes out of context (or simply forgetting it’s a dollblog you are reading) can be really funny.

Both funny and sometimes baffling is comparing sizes. My 26 cm girl wears the same wig size as a friends 70 cm girl, but her dresses are very similar in size to another doll that is only 20 cm. And then there are the sizing tags here. A 30 cm doll and a 9 cm doll both go into the tiny section even though one is triple the size of the other.

    9. I'm going to expand on the optional/jointed male manbits thing—those crazy/cool hilarious alternative option bits. Trouser snake, elephant 'fountain(?)', a hand acting like an Adam and Eve leaf—those are the funniest ones I can come up with off the top of my head.

    10. Granado's sense of humor kills me. Their April fools posts are the best. Plus "handy" will never be not hilarious.

      • x 19
    11. Agreeing with Enitnerolf, the unintentional body horror that is disassembly and restringing. Spouse's office and my studio/craft room are the same room and they have asked nicely that i cover up the "creepy headless neck stump with a hook in" while I do a faceup on the same doll's disembodied head.:XD:

      • x 11
    12. I crack up every time I'm installing eyes or messing with the head and the eyes end up pointing in wacky directions

      • x 29
    13. Expensive doll clothes really are funny. A long time ago when I was a bit unaware of average BJD prices I remember seeing an $80 dress and thinking, naively, that it was the doll itself...

      • x 15
    14. My BJD's eyes falling out or going in different directions if they’re left in the box for a while. Also, headless bodies being dressed for some reason is funny to me.

      • x 11
    15. I look forward to the Granado April Fool's post every year!

I'll throw myself in with finding detachable/weird optional boy parts hilarious, how can you not? And just every mention of parts is funny, too. Box of heads, spare bodies, jars of eyes...

    16. I find it funny how dolls can have a "personality" of their own. They kick, they swing their arms, they lean, they cuddle, they tilt their heads in ways that feel like they're expressing feelings. Even though I know they're just resin and string, they have personality unlike any other type of doll I've ever owned!

      • x 32
    17. Oh man definitely thirding the funny eyes.

Unboxing my boy was pretty funny, looking back. I was so excited I liveblogged it to my (very patient) mother, and Ara did some funny poses while I tried to squeak him out of the box. Then I got one shot that showed a bit too much hip and had to edit on an underwear emoji to cover him up!

Also, just talking about them sometimes. You get the unintentional horror and then also like "Poor thing is sitting around the house buck naked." Or worse, "I can't take them out! They don't even have a face yet!"

      • x 9
    18. Doll boobs. Sometimes the size and shape perplex me, other times I'm pleased a chest comes with cleavage so no one has to floss the bust clean.

      • x 15
    19. Oh boy, getting pinched by resin joints while moving body parts around and almost crying in pain is hilarious when I think back at it (it wasn't funny when it happened.. my tender finger skin got stuck in some joints and I'm pretty sure I screamed out in shock).

Or just seeing a doll with their arms or legs bent in the most unnatural ways while trying to pose them. Putting a head on facing the wrong way just for giggles. And of course eyes facing in strange directions

      • x 9
    20. Yeah, the removable...ahem, equipment on the male dolls is hilarious to me. My latest addition came with some extras of his own and my mom happened to see and we both got a good kick out of it.

Also, I think intentionally putting the "wrong" things on dolls is amusing. Like when you're experimenting for hybrids and put a head on a body that absolutely does not work... it's really funny seeing the wrong proportions, like a tiny pinhead on a big body with wide shoulders. Or eyes, dolls with eyes that are just a tad too big have a sort of uncanny but also hilarious thousand yard stare.

      • x 13
    21. One of mine has jointed hands and flipped me off whenever I pull her out of her bag. I think the tension straightened itself out or something because she doesn’t do it anymore, sadly.

The out of context comments and terminology/names. Comments like “I need to take her head off to get her into this dress” or pretty much anything relating to splits, sales, or mods.

    22. I once found a doll, like.. 10 years ago? Or rather a pic of the doll. Never found the company, or anything due to all the text being in japanese. But i saw a doll that appeared to uhh... 'stand at attention' so to speak if you poked his nipple. I didnt know if thats how it was or just a poor representation on the image. I was never able to find where to buy it to see. But it, to this day, is one of the main things about the hobby me and a friend joke about.

    23. This, exactly!:)

      • x 5
    24. Okay.

In MP right now, there is an item for sale. I guffaw every time I scroll past it. It is both magnificent and (IMHO) utterly ridiculous at the same time.

I may have to buy it and make it an office paperweight. Assuming no one else wants it for its intended purpose.

      • x 1
    25. OMG, I had no idea there was such a thing as jointed and removable male parts! That is hilarious.

    26. When the Nobility Doll Emotional Boy Body first came out, the advertisement mentioned the "male part" had a "twisting action." Someone on the discussion thread here casually mentioned it, and it came to be christened the "Amazing Spinning Boybits." Page 1, the discussion went straight to the gutter, and it stayed there the entire thread. Every once in a while, someone would try to justify it, saying it "Wasn't that bad, it's just so you can reposition it" for things like saddle stands, but it just made the whole thing funnier.

    27. I *had* to look this up. For anyone who joined after 2009, start here: /threads/nobility-doll-63cm-65cm-70cm-discussion.119519/page-14

Page 15 is when the discussion really starts to ramp up.

    28. Ok, that is hilarious, since I heard about those on Insta, I've been on the look out to buy one. And then I'll get it, and then what, what am I supposed o do with it? No idea, I just think I'm meant to own one :XD:

Now I also kinda want to put all my extra parts on the fridge, I have many horns for my MNF, I'll end up with a horny fridge, badum tss.

      • x 9
    29. @Wraak I'm thinking that the male body you're thinking of just might be the one mentioned further up in this thread (quoting it below for reference):
Something I'd like to add to this further beyond the feel good pressable nipple thing—I believe the Nobility Doll boy body was the one to start off the whole heli-peen (aka helicopter penis) saga. It cracks me up every time I think about it—especially since my Ringdoll RGM-3 has the same kind of...bit that can perform that very same function:lol:

Off the subject of magnificent boybits—I have to admit this hobby has created some interesting, and hilarious, conversation points between me and my mom on more than a few occasions :XD:

      • x 6
    30. I find funny photos of dolls with wooden poses and looking up at nothing :-)))

      • x 3
    31. “Owl” photos with eyes in the hip sockets of a boy doll. Are those still a thing? The “beak” is...well, you can probably figure it out. :XD:

      • x 15
    32. I’m waiting on a Volks boy who still has his eyes glued in. I was talking to a friend, and saying that as soon as Nicky got home, I was going to rip his eyes out.

The type of conversation you should really only have about a doll. Plus the ensuing conversation about buying new eyes!

      • x 6
    33. The injuries. The number of injuries I've sustained from a doll collecting hobby never fails to amuse me. This seems like it would be such a delicate sissy hobby but my hands are just always torn the hell up because of it. I crushed my thumbnail with an s-hook so hard it bled, cracked and turned purple. There's still blood inside that doll... It's like I'm asking to be cursed.

Objectively the detachable penises are the funniest thing, though. Mostly because "lol pennis" but also just the mere concept that people are so... invested... in their dolls' whangs that there's a demand for dolls with a whole arsenal of unique skinflutes. It's just very very funny.

    34. The never-ending pearl clutching about *stage whisper* DOLLY NUDITY and whether or not it needs a warning in any given situation. On one hand, I understand that surprise dolly weenie or boobies probably isn't what you want to see if you open up your instagram during your lunch break at work. On the other, if someone chooses to watch your box opening video, I feel like naked dolls should just be expected.

Also, non-traditional doll weenies in the shapes of snakes and other bizarre objects/animals/items. It feels very "sculptors spent so long asking whether or not they could that they never bothered to ask whether or not they should" to me, and I'd love to have tons of them as general magnets in my office because I've got the emotional maturity of a 12-year-old.

    35. That additional body parts really surprised me at first. So are the multiple stories of body parts 'flying away' while dressing up. Because they are connected by magnets, I also heard story that some people didn't want to put the additional parts on when wearing tight pants, and the magnet on the body keeps attracting metalic accessories '_> '
Also hilarious is soom's brain parts that replaced the s-hook for the idealian line. I mean, their dolls really has a BRAIN inside that empty resin skull! I missed the previous selling period of the doll I wanted so I don't have any idealian dolls yet. But I managed to push my friend into taking photos of that tiny brain part. It is just sooo cute.

    36. Some of the creative "option parts" certain companies make are pretty funny. The fact that someone took the time to make a trouser snake or my Granado guy's modesty hand is pretty amusing. Similarly if someone was to try to blackmail me with the nude pictures on my phone it would be ridiculous since they're all comparison pics of my dolls.

And as someone else mentioned, BJDs seem to project personalities in ways other dolls don't. For example I got a new wig for my Dream Valley Rosa, and she looked happier as soon as she was wearing it.

    37. @SunnyWindy The artist who makes the penis doll has recently opened a pre-order for him. Somebody on a FB group I belong to mentioned it, which made me go WTF?! and have to check it out.

To this day I have no idea what the purpose of the Granado handy part is except to make me (and others who've seen it) go WTF?! I was part of an excellent moment when I was visiting a friend and brought my then new Granado boy with me. We stopped at a Timmies to grab something for her mom on the way back to her house and while in line and talking dolls I casually said Liroshan came with 3 dicks and I didn't get the purpose of one of them. Naturally I say this just as there's a lull in the sound of conversation around us.

I am never not amused to be talking to someone about dolls and have an unaware person hear my end of the conversation about needing to decapitate <insert name here> so I more easily dig the eyes out of his head or what a pain it was to swap the feet of someone else just so they could wear the cool heeled boots I bought him or say his body was driving me crazy and I was thinking of getting a new one for him.

    38. I kind of enjoy the uncanny valley creepiness of some dolls. Especially if the doll was deliberately made to look spooky. It’s like saying, “Oh, you think my dolls are creepy? Well, wait till you see this!” Embrace the valley.

    39. There was a doll a long time ago that had soft nipples. Lol. I STULL TO THIS DAY laugh because I remember the way they worded it. Stuff like a zoomed in picture of the rubber nipple and saying “Touch it, so soft!!” Lol. I’m cracking up now remembering it!

    40. While I sitting at the park with my non dollie friend who is like to hear about my crafting journey and my fails, because I always present it in a funny way. Kind of a serial killer's diary. And the strangers' face who just walk by... It's hilarious. We laugh a lot.
( Something like: They are now all sitting on my bed naked and eyeless. Except the demon cat. But I Don't like his eyes. I Wanna change it)

    41. I'm new and the sheer size difference in the doll sizing cracks me up regularly

    42. For me I think its the the random things I say while I am crafting. Like "Oh no I dropped my irises!" Or " Ugh I think I am just gonna have to drill a hole in her butt" Just...the weird things that sound horrifying out of context crack me up the most. My hubby has gotten used to my weird comments, but I still wonder if anyone thinks I'm a serial killer from things I've said at the craft store.

    43. Tbh if you're a plus-sized person, those prices are *exactly the same* price as your own clothes. Sad but true.

And the dolls with detachable penises (of various sizes?) is funny af. Kind of wish they all had detachable genitals as that's the main issue when buying pants that would actually fit. Doll peens don't squish or move like human junk.

    44. Gotta agree with most people the "eggplant" attachments are hilarious. I also thing its funny seeing people paint the mouth inserts and its just a rod of teeth/tongue. It looks so funky outside of the face.

    45. Doll penises are just funny and bizarre to me. I know...I'm being immature but ehehe

    46. Apparently now there are penis dolls. It's from Mezen Fantasy Dolls.

    47. "I bought him just for his body" - the faces my coworkers had when I casually spit this out at work

      • x 9
    48. I find the reaction of people not involved in the hobby funny sometimes. I go outside to take some photos and some people look at me like I have an alien in my hands. =D

I also find funny some weird dolls and doll parts (regular penises are ok but I saw a SNAKE-PENIS and it's hilarious).

    49. I have a doll with mouth inserts and glossing his tongue is so freaky haha

    50. "Mother SD" will always be both endearing and hilarious to me :aangel:

      • x 6
    51. Dolls have expensive needs. A cheap wig looks cheap. Same with clothes. And shoes? On my goodness, it's crazy. But then you dress them and they preen. Totally Worth it. But have to buy things slowly to not go broke!

      • I've literally held a bag of doll d's.
      • Swiping through pages of detached body parts isn't weird in this hobby.
      • *Searches Vinyl male chest piece on Etsy* -gets bondage. "Hmm.. maybe I should have been more specific"
      • Is $50 for eyes too much? - Ugh, I don't want to spend $5 on Starbucks! :doh

      • x 13

    52. Lol. Unrelated - I couldn't remember what a "jock strap" was called, so I googled "athletic supporter" instead.
      I don't recommend it.

    53. You know, that THING! That holds that other THING!
Yeah, we'll Google that, Certainly nothing bad will come of this. :XD:

I swear, I thought I was pretty self explanatory.

      • x 2
    54. As many others have said, the price of doll clothes being so much more than human clothes "$20 for doll shoes, that's such a good deal! *add to cart*" vs. "$20 for human shoes?! are you crazy?! *puts back and buys nothing*"

My YoSD having a bigger eye-size and the being able to wear the same wig as my friend's SD13-sized girl
Getting double use from mini-hats, bought myself some for lolita fashion and was able to share them with my F-01s as regular-sized hats that actually fit their heads well
Pictures of dismembered doll bodies, doll heads with no eyes/only one eye, disembodied doll parts all over totally not being a cause for concern but interest in what that hobbyist is up to customizing
Switching doll parts for a friend to get a better idea of fit/color

      • x 3
    55. One thing that I will never stop finding hilarious is how creepy it seems to people who aren't in the hobby. Sometimes I forget how psychotic it looks to people when I have various doll parts, drills, and scalpels on my desk like it's normal. Then someone sees it and looks at me like :nowords:

      • x 7
    56. Or the things that are totally normal to say in this hobby, but out of context its just terrifying.

      • x 5
    57. This is what I was thinking of as well. Just thinking about how doll language sounds out of context is really funny, even when we're not thinking about mods, like "time to open their head and get the eyes out".

      • x 2
    58. Please, no one hate me, but I finally looked up Dollmore Trinity dolls, and I think they are HYSTERICAL. They are enormous. Freaking huge. I love everything about them. And they are made only in limited edition sets of 10. TEN!!! People go to regular retailers and buy human clothing for them because they are so big.

If I had one, I would probably get one of those wagons to pull it around in. I would charge people to take a picture with it. I would *pay* to take a picture with one. I want to see one IRL so badly.

ETA - I have been terrorizing my spouse with (joking) threats of getting one and making it a permanent installation in our living room.

    59. I wish I could recall which company it was, but I recently saw a 120cm BJD online. That's literally 30cm shorter than me! Your comment made me laugh because I threatened to save up for one and make an Only Slightly Smaller Me to freak out my partner with.
