Things about this hobby that you find hilarious?

Apr 30, 2021

    1. I'm an occasional doll YouTuber and I get way more downvotes on my doll videos than any other type of content (I also have a fairly large monetized tech channel).

They don't necessarily hurt the channel, but it's disheartening after all the effort it takes to make videos.

    2. I'm laughing about the new Migidoll release, Yusung because I wondered if they were informed of my post involving a certain demon or if they were reading my mind. The "mist" version's styling is giving "son of Dracula", but the "burn" version-. ...? Wait, has the Migidoll creator been visiting me in my dreams, I mean, reading my mind?

    3. Hahaha. @lutke This is my only reason to ever plan having dolls with the same expression, but in different sizes.

      • x 3
    4. I'd buy the Frankenstein doll just to put him in a tuxedo and tap shoes. A cultured, sophisticated man about town!

    5. Give him the chance his father never did.

After getting Baldwin, I swore off ringdoll, but now I'm this close to actually buying a female doll to make the bride of Frankenstein out of spite. If I keep her unstrung, she will be book accurate XD

    6. Obviously the news itself are concerning but just the wording of it has me rolling in the floor :XD: Try deciphering this, non-doll people!

    7. I am now worried about my boys coming without 'ding ding parts'.
I shall hoard my previous bags of parts.
I never know what dolls in the future, might need to borrow them!
      :aangel:

    8. It's a good thing that they could share :XD::XD:
Will we soon start asking about ding ding hybrids?:o

    10. The second hand market [in some places] will now flood.
Eye catching presentation is key, to make the sell.

    11. Oh no what if the magnets are the wrong polarity, then it's a dangerous weapon

    12. Whomever was smart enough to get started on the custom "rubber duck" hybrid idea, is gonna make a killing right now.

    13. Came to see if we were gonna let that announcement go past- I see we are not! :XD:
No free dingdings for dolly. Alas.

      • x 6
    14. I had to look up the latest dolly dingdong news to understand what’s going on. One of my top weirdest Google searches.

Alternative options might get a lot of love now. The rubber duck hybrid could become real.

    15. And lo, the Americans took up the lost art of dick smithing. Kinda wondering now if there'll be baskets of plastic penii at BJDC, commanding premium prices.

    16. A lot of um, lemme put this delicately for a 13+ forum, purveyors of adult items for bedroom entertainments do already make tiny versions of their products, more as a funny novelty item than anything, but if you asked them i am sure they'd make some in the right scale for adult doll owners who wanted their adult dollies to have bedroom entertainments as well. Just sayin. That's a thing that exists already.

    17. A few years ago, someone was making silicone ones. Those might come back into style

    18. Right, they are so good-looking and can be great in doll form.

    19. i always get a kick out of dolls eyes being wonky / looking two different directions esp the ones on sales listings

      • x 5
    20. *sighs* So much for Medongsa. Does this policy affect all BJD sites that sell extra bitties?

      • x 4
    21. As it's a Chinese edict, I would expect Japanese, Korean, and US sites to all still offer intact options, and I've already seen US makers with 3D printers on hand previewing new bits on Instagram. The real question is, will this become a selling point on dolls coming out of those countries?

And of course, if you're buying a Resinsoul, you could likely just ask them to install a magnet in there ahead of even getting modified doll, and save you some dremeling stress. Get a new bit for every day of the week.

    22. Sometimes second hand listings turn out accidentally hilarious and dollyteria made me spit my drink twice today.

    23. Is the second one uncle scale? Is he...dare I say...beefcake?

      • x 11
    24. It was on a 1/2 Spritdoll gal, could definitely fit an uncle in there, too!

Editing to add the listing link, I think the doll+shirt combo is somehow especially funny; a portrait of her tender beautiful face with short ribs on the collar...

    25. @cobaltconduct Secondhand listings can be a real goldmine for laughs sometimes!

I once saw a Volks F-44 one off on Mandarake (listing is still viewable if you search for it, was sold for ¥60000) who jokingly got referred to as Kurt the Frog Prince's cousin on a BJD discord server.
Someone bought Frog Boy, but he was quickly put up for sale again. Last time I saw him, he was still for sale. I guess it really isn't easy being green

    26. So the T&D Mini Moob Man body came today and my roomates' reactions to the ah, level of enthusiasm of some of his accouterments shall we say, ranged from "-mildly horrified- that's so big in proportion, what do you even do with that?"
      To
"Aw :c they won't stick to the fridge. I wanted to see if the landlord would notice."

Always fun to inflict my doll nonsense on the rest of the house.

    29. Something something Arms of an Angel something something for just $350+ you can rescue a doll that looks goofy in their listing photos

(They're all still much better off than fashion dolls on Ebay, who all tend to look rather. Mauled.)

      • x 8
    30. @Cryptid That doll is actually in my bookmarks :( I want to rescue her, but after customs fees at full value including shipping, they'd have to rescue me.

      • x 2
    31. ROFL!
(It is a very cute doll, I hope it sells)

      • x 4
    32. I'm sure in the end I'll just tank the customs fees, but I hope someone rescues her first :sweat
She seems in great condition except "chipping on the hands" which is mysteriously hidden with foam. But it's possible to just buy her new some new hands, worst comes to worst?
This is the listing. Very beautiful doll, faceup aside, and F-33 is one of my favorite Volks sculpts.

    34. My Volks Honoka just got here today and as I am opening her up, I dished out the bubble wrap to my mother and my daughter. Who doesn't like to pop bubble wrap?

So we had the following conversation:

Mom: This is the best bubble wrap I've popped in awhile.
Me: I thought you would have fun with it.
Mom: It beats the other bubble wrap we've been getting hands down.
Me: Yeah, the last few times the bubble wrap didn't pop very well.
Mom: I guess this is what $700 dollar bubble wrap feels like.
Me: (laughing) Volks gives out some fine quality bubble wrap.

I'm still chuckling over this, and in case anyone gets worried the bubble wrap itself wasn't $700 dollars, that was close to the cost of the doll. :XD:

    37. My anatomically correct box, your time has come....

Though, One time, I got msd sized ding dings with a huajing doll that did not have a removable ding ding. So now I have like dingitos with no matching doll XD

      I cannot imagine that's a common problem

    38. @Elomina showed me a photo of their 1/4 doll sitting in a card catalogue drawer. I immediately felt a burning desire to do the same thing.

Elomina's doll in a drawer was terribly cute; I don't know if mine are cute, but they sure are hilarious. I laughed way too hard taking the photos, and looking at them still makes me burst out laughing.

Hmmm I think a drawer makes for a splendid doll jail... :evilplot:

    39. @aihre OMG, they are SOOOO adorable!

And, as far as dolly jails go, I think I want something that looks like a bird cage.

    40. @tinyflame Hehe, thanks.
You ever sit down in a very soft sofa or beanbag, where you sink so deep into the seat and have to flail your arms and legs to get up again? I think of that for a drawer dolly jail. Maybe it's a comfy jail but they can't get out XD

      • x 6
    41. They look a bit like the possum who sneaked into a bakery, ate too many jam donuts and got stuck in the box :sweat I wonder what the bjd equivalent would be... "went to look for all those new, just ordered clothes while the owner was away, got stuck, spent a night sleeping in the drawer"?

    42. Some privacy, please?

    43. I do. And, when you bring a friend, it becomes the perfect excuse for an extra long cuddle. TeeHee.

    44. I saw this today on legenddoll, and the thought how someone outside of this hobby would react to a box full of meticolously sorted and tucked away heads, made me giggle.

Also somehow the image works in the preview but not the actual post, what the hecky XD

    46. Just the old image bug acting up. Probably the image is just to big to be forum appropriate.
In the reply box the image will show up smaller if quoted, and so it is visible there.

    47. Always love explaining to people how the wigs/clothes/shoes are usually around the same price as the human sized version. People usually think smaller item=lower price, but intricate items that are doll sized are understandably priced at a higher cost than doll accessories at something like a Walmart or Target.

      • x 7
    48. True! :XD: I used to think that it is not fair that dorrie clothes are more expensive than human clothes of the same material/style. But trying my hand at handsewing one......yeah, the effort because it is so small that the margin of error is too narrow. *_*

      • x 4
    49. haha when I first got into the hobby, that's what I thought too! The wig costs as well blew my mind, but now trying to sew and even style a wig, I can see it's an art that takes practice.

    50. I've been taking my dolls out on photoshoots and honestly we get gigantically noticed wherever we go.

      Thankfully people are overwhelmingly positive/curious.

Here's Ciel at La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. Yes I did get asked what I was doing with a 58cm doll in public. I usually get asked every single time I leave the house with somebody.

    53. Anatomically correct dolls and body blushing. I get it that a female doll depicting a teen or woman needs breasts, but nipples and the detailed male and female genitals puzzle me. Plus the need to paint any of them makes me want to snort and snicker. I mean why?...I read that Charlotte Johnson, Barbie's first clothing designer argued that Ken needed some molding in the crouch area so that his cloths would fit properly. I wonder if something like that was part of the reasoning with BJDs.

It could also be an Asian esthetic preference that comes across as strange in the west. I also read that the original Barbie dolls were made in Japan, and the Japanese factory engineers automatically put nipples on them. It wasn't until a guy from Mattel used the file from his swiss army knave to shave them off that the Americans were able to communicate that they didn't want the doll to have nipples. So I wonder a little, but seeing the posts about male dolls who have multiple penis options or ones that make holes in clothing makes me think it's an esthetic thing.

      • x 2
    54. Anatomical correctness that isn't sexualized -honestly, this was one of the qualities of BJDs that drew me to them in the first place, back in the mid 00s. I loved that they were realistically sculpted all over including their privates, which is indeed something that one doesn't really find in Western dolls.

Well, I discovered Asian BJDs 20 years ago, and back then, by and large, male penises were sculpted on and not detachable, and silicone boobs and parts were kind of the exception instead of the norm for resin BJDs. Then I took a long hiatus from BJD hobby, and when I came back, I was frankly kind of astounded to find option penis parts including erections to be more normalised. And you can get resin bjds that have silicone breasts built into the chest part. I'm not objecting to these developments but that's not what I'm used to, haha. However, I am rather frustrated that a recent censorship wave has hit Chinese dollmakers, and some companies are releasing male bodies without genital definition at all, sculpted on or detachable. I don't object to 'angel'/sexless bodies but not at the expense of males? I want uncensored anatomical correctness in my male (and female) BJDs, dang it - the rest of their bodies are so nicely sculpted, I feel that it's not right to have no definition in their privates at all. Where else, indeed, can I get non-sexualized realism in my dolls, if not in BJDs? /rant over

    55. I don’t think this is laugh out loud, ha-ha funny, but I think this fits.

A couple of weeks ago, I went down a wig making rabbit hole. Much to both my mild frustration and amusement, I noticed that every tutorial I found contradicted each other. While the basic technique was the same, the suggested materials were always different. For example, one tutorial instructor would say that they like to use human hair dye to color the mohair/alpaca hair, while another would say that human hair dye is awful and that only fabric dye should be used. In fact, the only consistent recommendation I found was that it’s best to use either mohair or alpaca hair for the wigs, though I remember a couple suggesting to start with synthetic fibers first. I guess it goes to show how subjective the wig making process is.

But seriously, thank you to anyone who decided to post their wig making methods to this website. They are very helpful, and made the very idea of making a wig more doable.

    56. I saw this cool t&d biker uncle on mandarake this morning and the posing on the nude images cracks me up: bam, bam, BUM. HOW is this his center of gravity? Could you use his butt as a shelf? Rest a drink on it? :sweat
