Contest The Wonderful Surprise Contest ~ Paper Dolls!

Aug 21, 2014

    1. For my entry, I used my Leeke Tiny doll. This was fun and challenging.

And to help understand the pivot points, I am including a pic of the back. These allow her head to pivot, and her legs to attach and move without showing on the front of her dress.

    2. This was fun. More work than I anticipated, but isn't everything?

Here's my lovely foxy girl all in bits. She has 17 points of articulation (some are not visible from the front, for example, her ears are articulated separately from her side-hair), and is put together with tiny scrapbooking brads.

      Now she can be excited!

      Or she can be shy

    3. Here is my Blue Pierrot (David Bowie MNM on Dollshe Pure), faceup and costume by me. Since we can't use embellishments except for brads, I used embelished brads to represent the real life jewels of his costume.;)

      NOTE: I'm participating JFF.

    4. I made a paper doll of my Doll Chateau Debbie, Merino the sheep girl, wearing her lovely Raouken corset, edhelwen bloomers, and tutu by EleanorAnne. This contest was a lot of fun and everyone's entries are awesome!!

Merino The Sheeperina is put together with 14 tiny brads and has a special sheep appropriate grass border on the layout.

    5. Well, I got as far as taking some photos. But with the holiday this weekend, I have too much going on to be able to finish in time to enter. Too bad these contest don't run longer than a week.

    6. Just barely managed to get this done! I was out of town for work until early yesterday. :sweat I used my Volks Lorina (on SD13 body), gave her 15 points of articulation, and assembled her with needle & black thread. :)

    9. I've loved seeing people's creations, and wanted a paper doll of my own!
This is my Doll in Mind Enubi being a steampunk angel, in keeping with this year's theme! She's in 23 parts, and joined by brads with 16 points of articulation (some with multiple parts and a couple hidden behind other parts in some of the pics). All the costume bits (e.g. watch, hat) are an intrinsic part of the outfit being worn by the doll and articulated for movement (i.e. not to be removable).

    10. My paper doll, created with my Soom Turb. He has 14 points of articulation, and is held together with wire. Sorry for the slight glittery effect on the images. It was an unintended side effect of the paper I used, and it's too dark now to take photos with better lighting.

    11. I want to print out all of these <3
Here is my little miss, she dressed up just for this contest :)
She has 16 points of articulation and is strung with black and white thread.

    14. Winners have been announced HERE!

    15. Just popping in to say that the paper doll comp was an awesome idea and that I thoroughly enjoyed looking through this thread and what people came up with. Amazing. I very much want to have a go at this. Anyone got any hints and tips, based on their experience? Not sure where would be the best place for them. Perhaps in here, unless someone wants to set up a thread somewhere for paper dolls.

    16. My tip is to either use thick paper or to mod podge a blank sheet of paper to the back of your printed doll before you cut it out. That way your creation will be sturdier and less likely to rip. <3

    17. Huge congratulations to the winners - your dolls look fabulous! And huge congrats all round in fact for such a wonderful, varied, and creative set of dolls and approaches! Also a very big thank you and well done to whoever's idea this was as a surprise contest - I would have never thought of doing this (or spent the time figuring out how to) and I love having my resulting doll!
MadamMauMau - in terms of tips, my first attempt went badly wrong when I tried doing it off a single photo, so I ended up taking about eight of different parts / sections in close up and resizing and combining them in Photoshop (I was doing this single handedly with a doll who doesn't love posing, so the camera remote control was a must!).
I'm in awe of the people who managed to do it without an editing programme, as I would have been totally flummoxed! I set up the canvas size to be A3, and the resulting doll is about 30cms tall, if that's any help with sizing... I can only print in A4 though and I could definitely made a more efficient layout of body parts, as this took 3 sheets of printing rather than 2...
Another top tip - cats don't make good photography 'helpers' :)

    18. Thank you both for that.

I had thought to print on thin card, so that should do that, I hope.

Shrinkomatic, that's a great start of info. I SO want to make paper dolls of my entire circus. Ambitious? Me?

    19. Definitely print on something heavy like cardstock. I also used a heavy duty sewing needle to pre-poke the holes for the brads, on top of a piece of scrap cardboard so I could just line up all the layers of the cardstock and pierce all the way through in one go.

I took multiple photos (mostly for things like, doll with wig, no ears; doll without wig, no ears; doll without wig, but yes ears) and had my doll on a stand and my camera on a tripod with a remote trigger, so as little as possible would move between shots. I also set my camera to full manual, so it wouldn't decide to change up exposure times between shots. I really wanted consistency.

That fell apart a little when I had to get shots of her legs without the skirt in the way. I didn't want to have to photoshop out the doll stand (it was a saddle stand) so I just sorta had to hold her up, and her thighs were a bit motion blurry as a result. It didn't really affect the paperdoll much in the end, as the legs are under the skirt, but it did make it much harder to cut out the background in photoshop.

I used layer masks in photoshop to isolate the individual pieces onto a white background, then pasted them all on to new layers for each piece so I could arrange them on the page for printing easier.

I also had to run my printers clean nozzle cycle a couple of times before I got a print that didn't have horrible banding across her skirt. I also had to up the brightness and contrast a bit for it to not print dull and heavy on the cardstock. My only color printer is a really cheap epson inkjet. Photo paper might have been a better choice, but I didn't have any handy.

    20. Very handy. Do you think it would work better to lay the doll down? You would have to have artificial light so that the light direction wouldn't be weird. And you might get some reflections off the ground. Hm. I will have a think about that.

Good point about shooting full manual, for consistency.

    21. MadamMauMau ~ I would love to see paper dolls of your Night Circus!! I was thinking it would be cool to have a permanent thread for this too, I really want to make more, and I enjoyed seeing the ones here so much!

I did that for some of the photos. I had to in order to get the feet the way I wanted. I had him on the rolling part of my desk, and his feet were hanging over the edge (he's a little too tall to fit completely on the desk) so that might cut down on reflections from the ground.

I probably used about 30 photos to make mine^^' I'm sure there was an easier way but I wanted everything in as best focus as I could get (and it still wasn't great).

Cover or card stock work great by themselves, and after I did one for the photos I laminated a couple. If anyone else plans on doing that, I recommend thinner lamination lol
The thick stuff I used first almost killed me when I was cutting it out!

    22. I also used several photos for my doll, around a dozen total but all variations of three shots: doll with coat on, doll with coat off and sleeves rolled up, coat laid out sans doll. For the first set, I had to tuck the coat around carefully so that it'd look alright when jointed later. I had my tripod and lighting set up so everything would be consistent: lighting always from the same direction, and the doll always the same distance away so things would be proportional. Then I opened up all my decent photos and picked out my favourite pieces from each: head from one photo, right arm from another, etc. Once I had the good pieces all selected, I carefully cut them out properly with the eraser tool and then did some overpainting to bring up the contrast and add outlines (mostly because my camera is awful, I suspect I could have skipped a lot of that part if I still had access to a DSLR :P)

I'd also love to see more of these, if they're deemed off-topic for DoA I'll try and post some more about my process on my blog at least ;)

    23. We'd love to see more paper dolls in this thread, so post away! :D

    24. Hurrah for the ongoing thread! And I'd love to see an articulated paperdoll Night Circus :) I'd also like to do a few more myself - one of the things I'd find helpful here is some more top tips on scale. Iwasteela mentioned earlier in the thread the idea of a paper doll for her dolls, which was kind of what I wanted scale-wise, but was more luck than planning - so an A3 canvas used not very space efficiently gave me a doll to the scale shown below with my SD girl, but has anyone else figured this out properly / what size did you use to get what scale?!
