The ^ < v Game! - Part 6

Mar 28, 2019

    1. ^ I’m a big fan of “tan” BJDs. Still debating id it would fit for my last two planned characters but I’d love to get a tan skin doll one day.

      > Kinda unrelated to BJDs but I also really love how people can use clear resins for props, dioramas etc. :love

v I see people resin cast stuff for Cosplay all the time. Do you cast any props for your dolls with resin?

    2. ^ no, because it just seems like I'll need to buy a bunch of things to get started... If I ever cast anything in resin I'll probably want to try eyes first though.

< I was searching pinterest to see how people keep their dolls and there are not many display ideas for bjds, unlike blythes, barbies or other smaller dolls :( I just want some inspiration on how SD dolls could be displayed (I dont have the space but I can dream, right? XD)

v Do you prefer displaying your dolls or keeping them away, and why?

    3. ^ I keep mine in a cabinet. Sometimes I forget they're in there lol. But it's safer since I don't really have a way to block sunlight in my room and I've got a cat.

< So tired... no motivation... I hate working from home. At least at the office you're like, OK I'M HERE IT'S WORK TIME but at home it's just like ugh I guess I gotta start calling people but my bed is right there whyyyy...

v How would your favorite doll's character deal with being trapped inside for months??

    4. ^ Hazuki would just embrace it. Chill on the couch and play video games all day.
She's not the most social being out there to begin with and she adores sleeping in.

      > I just found out that IOS is gonna be re-releasing Valentine this week :chibi Why did I look at their schedule again? :frownyblush:

    6. ^ My favorite outfit of my BJD is one that consists of a black turtleneck sweater, black dress pants, and black and white converse!

< I wish I had more motivation to get more into crafts. I really want to make a room for my doll, but I can't bring myself to actually start it :sweat

v Do you make characters for/out of your BJDs, or do you just have them as a fun thing to collect/play with?

    7. ^ Characters. My first dolls were purchased without characters in mind but have since been assigned a character. I find it adds to my enjoyment of the dolls when I can imagine a personality. Even Jewel who was bought just to have a cute small doll to play with has gone through a bit of character development. I'm finding it also helps to limit the amount of dolls I want since I'm looking for particular traits.

      > But backstories? What's a backstory? LOL

v Would you take a doll off the wish list if you couldn't think of a character for it?

    8. ^ My wish list has nothing to do with backstories...so no. I see a doll, I fall in love, I mull for a long time...and if I can't get it off of my mind, eventually I buy it - and create its persona later.

< Too many dogs! Adding a new puppy to the pack was great, and I love him madly...but he is just so...energetic. :sweat

Do you ever get frustrated by not being able to style a doll in the way that you'd originally imagined? The doll is perfect, you love its face, faceup and body...but the freakin' outfit and wig just don't come together as easily as you'd hoped?

    9. ^ for me it’s the eyes. I almost sold Aura until I tried good eyes in her. I’m going to go through that a second time with Myri, and I know that, but I’m hoping shiner I’ve seen how much potential they have, I can make them look right.

<I’m so excited to get Myri back, which is strange, because I sold him?

v ever sell a doll, only to buy it back later?

    10. ^ Not the exact same doll, but yes. I've sold a Migidoll Miho and bought it again, a MNF Karsh - twice! I'm on my third right now. MNF Shiwoo, an Angel of Dream girl body (for the same head lol), Dollshe Saint (how I hated that first head. I love the one I have now)...and maybe there's more, but I can't think of them off the top of my head. For the most part, I've learned, finally. I just don't sell anything XD

      > I hope my cat is better. She's eating and drinking again, but now she's mad I tried to give her a pill....

    11. ^ I have a very small wishlist (usually 2-3 dolls at any one time). One of the dolls on there is kinda just an old project I'm not sure I want to do anymore as well so not a lot to pick from. For the remaining one or two dolls on there, I decide based on how long ago I added the sculpt to the wish list (i.e. do I really want it) and whether or not its on sale.

      > Time to get to work!

    13. ^ I have several projects going on in parallel (I should really work on getting them finished). :aeyepop: First is my Granado Michael's ventilated wig (made up of four different fiber colors), second is a clothing set for my LoongSoul ZhuZhao that needs a helluva ton of pleating, then there are two yumi bows that still need finishing. Don't even ask about a set of cardboard pseudo-shoji screens that I am so close to finishing, but haven't got to doing so because other projects kept being bumped higher on the priority!

      > It's nice to finally overcome the BV from the previous months.

    14. ^ I'm doing the faceup on my Luts Bliss, and I want to start the faceup on my Switch Sohwa but I need to finish modding his neck first. Since I do most of my dolls faceups, I almost always have at least one being worked on at any time ^-^

< Gah i just wanna lie in bed but there's work

v Do you have a doll that you favour over the rest, and what kind of special treatment does this doll have?

      • Creative
    15. ^ I used to think it was Jewel but now I'm thinking Hazuki. She's favored as my first doll and also because of her face-up. Special treatment? A lot of effort goes into buying things for her to get her look just right. The rest of the dolls I own cater more to whatever I like and that is specifically why Jewel has more things. However, Hazuki has a very established tomboy style, specific hairstyle and specific eye color which I am on the lookout for. Getting whatever I liked would break her out of character.

      > IOS' schedule said Valentine would be re-released today but nothing is on the sale page for him yet! :atremblin

    16. ^ For me, if a sculpt is readily available new from the company, I try to buy new these days. I worry about some of my favorite companies disappearing or becoming less active, and they could use the revenue. Otherwise, I really enjoy buying secondhand. It's much faster, and I tend to fall for a lot of discontinued artist sculpts.

    17. ^ There are so many! I'll concentrated on SD size + Animals that could work with them (possibly). At the moment, I am still looking at Dollshecraft Natalie, though the seams are getting a problem, let alone the waiting time! Beyours Pansy <3 regularly comes up. If her body wasn't so basic and hadn't the reputation to be difficult to pose, I would have bought her a long time ago. After coming across Errato by Rugged Realism/Helen Holz, I've decided to wait till she creates a girl BJD rather than trying to sell my Fairyland F60 boy this year. I have recently become aware of Rosen Garden's Cato - I love his face and the bust that was available to buy with it - such a great package! Then, there are Cuartosdolls' various beasts . :doh
Basically, I need a house with lots of rooms for my addiction and several money trees in the garden.

< When will this all finish!

V Which company's and colour resin do you have that blew you away?

    20. ^ I have at least two, though neither is complete at the moment - Juniper Poisonwood (my Harry Potter RPG character - her name happened from a name generator XD ) is Unoa Lusis but has no faceup at the moment.
Olivia Blackwood is an OC who's from a family where all the women have plant-based names. She's had two heads and is sort of in limbo as another doll has her body, but I'm currently working to get her back together, so she still counts.

      > Cat is back to normal and now dog is out for a teeth cleaning. Fingers crossed.

      > Ok. I was seriously sworn off from buying anymore BJD stuff this year lol. Then I proceeded to buy 4 wigs and a floating head. What even? I swear I'm done for the year now!!

    28. ^ Acyra is a Loongsoul 75cm body with a twigling ingenue head, either twigling or iplehouse hands, probably iplehouse feet. She is also going to have posable wings and a tail installed onto her back. Her body is modified to have breasts and I've sculpted her genitals (LS just had a place for the magnet penises, I sculpted a little more than the standard slit over it.) All of her will eventually be dyed, and then will need a custom sword and a set of armour. And also her horns, which I'm torn about whether or not I'm sculpting.

Zariel is a Soom Idealian68 body, with an iplehouse HID small bust chest, possibly IMPL muscle arms, and doll chateau wings, making her the doll comprised of the most companies. She also needs armour.

Vidania has lost 7-8 cm of resin-- 3.5 cm out of her thighs, and two slices of 1.75 cm off her shins--this meant I had to milliput her together, and sand down/build up the parts to reconcile them. I've also broadened her hips, and repositioned her torso joint to un-swayback her. I also want to make her shoulders, and I'm hoping I don't have to shrink her arms to match her new legs. I then have to colour match all of her, and then paint tattoos over all of that.

<Someone stop me. I'm writing vampire stuff.

    29. ^ Not as complex as the previous post, but the most complex doll I've put together is Salt, my Switch Sohwa on an Iplehouse SID male body. When trying to put this hybrid together, nothing I could find could tell me if the NS for both companies would match (they do, mostly), and also, I have to mod the neck hole on the Switch head as well as the neck of the Iplehouse body to get them to fit. I'm still modding the neck lol.

I forgot about her but Pebbles, my Unoa Lilin is also kinda complex to put together: her faceplate is a sleeping Unoa Chibi Lilin that with eyes that I modded open, her body is a Unoa 1.5 girl body with a Buff headback and Unoa chibi feet. To be fair, the headback/ body/ feet combo came that way when I bought it secondhand but still...

< I can't wait for work to end and my long weekend to start (took leave on Monday woo)

    30. ^ canonically, Vidania died once. I won’t go into the details too heavily, but she was blamed for a murder she didn’t commit (of someone she’d loved) and she burned for it, and was reincarnated by a death god.

her doll, well, see above. Ive hacked her to pieces before. At one point, her legs were in 6 pieces. They’re now just a tiny bit scraped up from me dremel sanding apoxie.

    32. ^ I bought a very pretty, miniature porcelain sake set, and was very excited to pose my boy, all decked out in his intricate kimono, elegantly holding the cup and bottle. He was on a carpet so that if he fell over, there would be no damage. As Murphy's Law would have it, about two minutes after I started photographing him, he did fall over...and landed face first on the cup, which immediately shattered and put a fairly deep scratch on his cheek. I really didn't see that one coming...

(Oh, and my dog's fine :XD: I don't think she actually swallowed anything, and she's pretty much indestructible anyway.)

< I want a 50cm/60cm 15/16-years-old tanned girl BJD and I cannot find one that is nice enough to gift to myself. < GEEZ, Isamu. For someone with the largest noggin' in the group, you look plain awful on any of the 70+cm male bodies I currently have. Oh, and your neck opening is so narrow, it's a pain to pull elastics and s-hooks through. Talk about picky!

    43. ^ my Fairyland Littlefee Chiwoo elf girl was meant to be sweet and dreamy in a girly kind of way. When I wiped off her official face-up and tried a short wig by pure chance, I discovered she had a boyish quality to her that suited her more and that she was very much ''awake and aware''. I like her a lot. The elf ears were a big draw when I choose her. So now she doesn't wear dresses that often.

    46. ^least is easy. Acyra is, in my scale, a 7’ obsidian half-devil woman with wings, a tail and horns. She’s super muscular, and worlds a huge sword. So me at 5’3, maybe 115lbs and incapable of lifting a 60lb sand bag—I’m not exactly going to get confused for her. As for most, I think Vidania. Both tiny and kinda pale (she’s ws, so she has me beat), both have dark hair (dark purple for her, black for me), both going for a goth vibe. She is very different from me in the grey eyes, burn scar, and tattoos. She also has the side bonus of looking like me in terms of backstory—I accidentally projected a lot of me into her. She’s also bipolar, also has a bad track record with overcommitting to girls she likes (one really toxic one) and gets out when she’s able to find a proper support network. We’re both stubborn as hell too, and she’d be all over my taste in music. Believe it or not I didn’t know I did all that until people pointed her out. Oops.

<heck. I know what sculpt I want for Illyra. Oops.

v I want to see other people’s answers! Which of your dolls would you say looks the most like you? The least?

    47. ^ Currently I think Hazuki looks the most like me. Black hair, big brown eyes, oriental and somewhat fair skinned. However, she is meant to have brown/auburn hair and heterochromia of the eyes. Her grunge/tomboy style is also quite different from my current style.

Character design wise, Kasumi would look the most similar to me, her doll is just not completed yet :sweat She has all the above features, is around my height (5-2” by design, 5-4” going by the 1/3 scale), and would wear the girly tops and dresses I prefer. :chibi

The one who looks the most different is Asher who is 6 ft tall and a fairly buffed up guy. :abambi:

      > In my opinion, Kasumi is based on a somewhat idealized version of myself (or at least what my junior high self thought was ideal ). She’s outgoing, loud, fun, and a force to be reckoned with.

v Are any of your dolls based on your own image or personality?

    48. ^ Nope. I am neither a cute little kid, a skinny teenage vampire boy, nor a wolf. They're all based on my own characters though, so I'm sure aspects of personality seep in.

< I want to start drawing again, but that means I have to start drawing... you see my dilemma.

v Do you have any dolls who, if you bought them today, you would choose a different sculpt but you've gotten attached to their current doll form and aren't planning to change it?

    49. ^ Wow this is a question I think about a lot.
My big problem is scale these days. Originally when I got into BJDs it was to shell Alex, my favorite OC. I found the perfect "Alex" in Dollmore's Kara Klum. As my first doll it was easy to find dolls to go with him, as Dollmore Adams are very short and skinny, perfect for that character.

My other main OC at the time was David and Migidoll Ryu was perfect for him. And my particular Ryu is special. To me at least lol

Fast forward and both those dolls are now too short for my collection. My Ryu was kind of aged up a little and moved to a taller body, but that leaves Alex even shorter, and not only will his head not work on other bodies, I have three of them (two are very limited) and really, I still haven't found a doll I like as much for him.
But with David it's almost worse...I think Dollshe Arsene would be perfect as a new shell, but I don't want him THAT tall. He'd work better on the Soom body I have for him now, but I don't know if Arsene will fit or look good on it. And that still leaves Alex being too short. lol

So that kind of answered the question. If looking today I'd probably still buy a Kara Klum, but only if I found him! There's a lot more dolls out there than there were back then, and he's buried on Dollmore's site. And y'know. I might not even find Dollmore today if I looked. They're way more known for their bigger dolls. I literally can't think of a better head for him, so hopefully fictional current me locates the doll on their site.
But I'd probably buy Arsene for David and never even look at Migidoll.

      > My cat loves me working from home so much. If I ever got back to my office he's not going to be happy.
@Safira I see your dilemma so hard it hurts.

V Same question because I want to know who else thinks this: Do you have any dolls who, if you bought them today, you would choose a different sculpt but you've gotten attached to their current doll form and aren't planning to change it?

    50. ^ For me that's probably Yin. She's a D.I.M. Honey Alana that I got in 2013. She's way more stylized than most of my other dolls, and particularly tall. But I like how posable she is, and she's irreaplacable, since the line was discontinued not long after I got her and she's a mature tiny, which is not a very popular scale.

< I'm interested in reshelling Lin and Yumiko, as I'm not crazy about the single jointed bodies they have, but mature tinies are pretty rare, and very few have Asian features.

V Is there an ethnicity you wish was better represented by BJDs?

    51. ^ I think there’s still a serious lack of African features, particularly among more mainstream doll companies (Fairyland, Volks, Soom). I try to keep my girls in the 60cm range, so Iplehouse is out due to size/the degree of realism.

< I haven’t had much doll time lately due to work :(

v Are there any accessories you’re searching for?

    52. ^ Not as such. I'd rather make them. Unfortunately, I get waylaid very easily. A long necklace for my 70cm boy has been on the cards for a while and I don't even know if I have a chain long enough for it.

< I've eaten too much though I don't feel full. What's with me???

V What is the first thing your BJDs do when the weather turns cold?

    54. ^ so many self modded dolls!
-vidania: leg shortening, torso repositioning, broader hips/shoulders, third joint getting added?
-Acyra: breasts added, genitals resculpted, tail, wings being made and installed, neck will be nodded for head, dye job
-Zariel: torso sculpted to accommodate a different chest (idealianF/iple hid small bust)—soon to be getting impl muscle arms, doll chateau wings installed into her back.
-shrike: soon to get a back mod to take the wings I want for her
-dacrya: body dyed/spray painted to match head
-Dia: all his joints need redoing, plus his (first hen EID) butt flaps have to go.

This is just what I’m working on now, and there will be a great deal more to come. I mod everything that comes into my hands.

<Shrike is the only mod that scares me, because she’s a twigling in a colour from an old caster.

v Passing this down: which of your dolls are modded?

    55. ^ Just 2:
      1. Pebbles, my Unoa Chibi Lilin sleeping, modded to have tiny but open eyes
      2. Salt, my Switch Sohwa on Iplehouse SID body, who has mods on the neck for the parts to fit together

< I realise I've been buying doll clothes every month this year :0

v For the dolls you have sold, do you wonder what happens to the doll with their new owner?

    56. ^ Not really, because I rarely have any regrets about selling - so I'm just happy that they go to an owner who will love them more than I. Although, I often see them pop up in the new owner's pics on DoA.

< Stop buying dolls, and start styling the ones that you already own!!

v Do you ever berate yourself for not learning enough about one or more of the crafts in particular that go hand in hand with this hobby, like sewing, wig making or painting faceups?

    57. ^ No point ripping on myself for the stuff I can't do. I'm never going to learn if I make it super anxiety inducing to think about. I regret not getting better supplies (my pastels suck!), and I regret not trying certain things, like modding, earlier. I regret not knowing I could dye dolls, for dolls I've skipped over resin colour. But if I make this hobby less fun being mad at myself, why am I even here? School is the thing that I enjoy but also berate myself over, and even there I'm trying to learn to let things go, so I can actually enjoy what I'm doing without deciding, say, 3.8 is terrible because it isn't 4.0.

<LEarning to suck at things was actually a thing I talked about with my therapist, so I'm giving faceups a whirl soon! My first tries were... bad. Like, kid painted with fingers bad.

V What's your favourite of all those little skills we develop in the hobby?

    59. ^ I have the supplies for face-ups and a lot of blank dolls. I haven't actually worked on giving them face-ups for a pretty long time. But I have gotten better at making them decent fitting clothes that look nice.

V If you could have any doll idea custom made to match what's in your mind's eye, what would you have created for you?? (assume money is no object)
