The ^ < v Game! - Part 6

Mar 28, 2019

    1. ^ Face-ups! I can do a basic one but I’d like to get better at it.

      > I feel silly for shelling undeveloped characters instead of developed characters :sweat

v How do you decide names for your dolls? Is it an arbitrary selection of a name you like or do you try to incorporate a hidden meaning?

    2. ^ there’s always a meaning. Vidania, in one forgotten realms Elvish prefix/suffix dictionary Means “the patron saint of pointing fiingers” and in surface undercommon means “stolen by death, or death-thief”—both of these names are pertinent to her story. Usually I go with a name that is situationally apt, and has a meaning that works for the character.

      <I love modding

V passing this down: how do you name your dolls?

    3. ^ Come to think of it, Adhara was the only doll who I named for sentimental reasons (that's the name of my favorite Salamence from Pokémon Pearl back when I still played the franchise -- all my dragons were named after the brightest visible stars in the sky). Unfortunately, it's not exactly a name that you can find in the Japan-esque world of Rokugan in the L5R tabletop RPG franchise, so she ended up getting another name that blends in better: Kaguya (chosen more in irony, because by that world's standards, she ain't the prettiest girl on the block). My other dolls have their names picked for their meaning or were named in honor of a certain preexisting figure. Some of them, like Adhara/Kaguya, had ironic meanings considering the nature of the character.

      > Wow, 3 ventilated wigs in about 4-5 months? My previous record was 1 in 3 months. Jeez, must be my anxiety talking.

    5. ^ I don't have pictures because I didn't like any of them, and never uploaded them anywhere (so who knows where the actual files are) but I once set up a huge Mad Tea Party using my Dollmore Kara Klums as Alice in Wonderland characters. One was Alice, one was the Mad Hatter, the Cheshire Cat and the Jabberwock. There might have been one more at the time but I don't remember XD I used every piece of furniture and dinnerware prop I owned. It was fabulous. But did it indoors and since all you saw was my tv and shelves in the bg the pics were all bad.

      > My tracking hasn't updated....I'm getting worried.

V Since I had no picture, I'll pass the Q along What was the most challenging photoshoot you ever did? Bonus for pic!

    6. ^ Two doll friends and I rented a photostudio to make use of their props. Turns out, trying to juggle 6 dolls, props and 3 cameras between us in a studio that ended up being tighter than we expected was really tiring. I didn't bring a tripod either, expecting that it'll be ok but with the tightness of space, the dust and the number of dolls and all of us trying to get a corner for individual shots, it was not easy to take photos. I got super tired afterwards but I did get some good photos out of it.

Here's the group shots, I have other photos scattered over my instagram. :D

    7. ^ Your group pictures are so pretty! My fav clothing brand is probably volks, I like that it's guaranteed to fit my msd sized dolls and that they have matching outfits!!! The downside is how expensive it is, a couple outfits costs as much as a doll XD

< I've got way too much wigs but for some reason I still feel like I'm missing a lot of doll wigs because my msd dolls from luts and volks has got two different head sizes....

< @Feywildchild I have a bjd YouTube (cian1675) haha (shameless plug lol). That aside I feel like youtube doesn't show everything when I search even I try to type in more terms so maybe that's why?

My favorite sculpt overall, though, is Natalie by Oasisdoll - but Oasisdoll is sadly not as active as Migidoll and they're harder to acquire. They make gorgeous girls, though (and boys now, too!).

    28. ^ All my EID-sized dolls are hard to find clothes for, but right now the big problem children of my group are my M and F Impldoll Idol bodies. I don't know how anyone on earth thought those knees and hips were a good idea. I may be taking them both apart and attempting to mod the hell out of them just so they'll sit and stand like normal people. They might need new knee joints made from scratch, something I've never attempted, but trying to get them to work inside clothes is such torture it'll be worth it.
I have an Iplehouse EID who is easier to pose. His knee joints might be useless, but at least if I don't engage them, he can still function, and I'm not constantly trying to get his thighs into place or pry his legs apart. Just the though of touching the Impldoll knees makes me want to cry in frustration.

      > My doll finally tracked and is in the US!! Someday it might arrive (I will be so happy when/if things go back to normal....)

    30. ^ I think the first BJD I saw was in a shop window in Japan. I didn't know the genre had a name but I was instantly enamored by the realism and natural posing. I never considered buying a genuine doll until I met someone online recently who lives near me and collects them. She shared her passion with me and I felt like, "I can do this!" When I talked to my BFF about it, I learned she already owned a doll and loved them too!

    31. ^ For me, there are usually two ways this could happen. Firstly, I am attached to the characters of my dolls, and not the doll shells themselves. Therefore, if a sculpt becomes available that rings "Hey, this is more spot-on for so-and-so instead of the current incarnation", up in the marketplace the old shell goes. I thought it would be difficult, but after going through it the first time, it really wasn't so bad. Likewise, if a character-less doll has been taking up room space for a long time, I'll most likely just let it go.

Secondly, if my finances mandate that someone has to go in order to pay the bills, my dolls have a "priority rating" as to who gets to stay. Of course, one always hopes that Case#2 wouldn't have to happen.

< Oh Kimchi, it seems you'd be going home at last! Your resin mom and dad would be so happy to have you back~

The more the better (I adore Pong - I have the LTF version!)I used to go for neutral expressions, but it got to the point where, even with different faceups, they all just looked neutral. So many lifeless faces staring at me. Having expressions in a collection makes it more exciting, and I do find having them makes a lot of molds more lifelike.

    38. ^ Ha ha I was telling this story in another thread but here goes:
Why You Should ALWAYS Use A Stand: A BJD cautionary tale.
This was years ago, at a doll meet. The theme was Winter Ball. In my area there are several members who had Soom and Volks LEs and many of them were "dancing" in the ball room area. Like, more than five. Thousands of dollars worth of BJD, right there together.

The ball room also had a bar, where one of my dolls was standing, sans stand. I figured he would be ok, since he was leaning on the bar. I was in the (actual) kitchen and heard a crash. I just knew. I ran to the other room in terror and found that what could have been the greatest doll disaster of all time had just barely been avoided -- my boy laying prone in the middle of all the dancing BJDs who all cost twice what he did easy, among the refuse that was once a food cart. He had narrowly missed all the dolls and hit the cart on the way down. I almost had a heart attack. I'm not kidding, I was shaking and totally freaked out.

Never again will I have a doll with no stand hanging out at a meet. They will be sitting, firmly, somewhere out of the way and harmless if they have no stand. Or I will carry them around.

So that was the most terrifying thing I've ever done, and if I want to scare myself ever again, I think about how much money that fall could have cost me in replacing all those hard-to-find expensive dolls. I'm seriously broke just thinking about it.

      > OMG my doll was just delivered. Must go open box.

I hung her from a branch by a hand, perched her in a bunch of flowers off the ground, and set her on a boulder. She fell out of a tree at one point, which was scary, but she was fine. She is a tough old lady. She's also an irreplaceable limited though, so despite her portability, it is nerve-wracking.

    47. ^ I once ordered a Smart Doll from Japan who was being shipped via DHL. Well, the day came he was supposed to be delivered, never came. Called DHL and the delivery person just drove back to their city (about 2 hours away) without finishing their route. This is a holiday weekend so now I have to wait until Tuesday because he's in some locker in my city and no one is there. Oki, I wait. No doll Tuesday. I call DHL again, now they're claiming I signed off on not having to sign for my doll (which is crazy and I would never do). So now I'm having major anxiety over the whole situation. I wait outside all day Wednesday. The doll finally shows up at about 8pm. That was the most agonizing wait I've ever had. I had so much anxiety the whole time, and even though the wait was on the shorter end it was just horrible. Especially after being told I signed off on not having to sign for him...which meant DHL was no longer responsible if something went wrong on their end and my insurance was basically void.

< I want it to be Monday already, weird thing to say, I know.

v What's the one thing you regret in this hobby?

    48. ^ Browsing doll sculpts while waiting for my doll to ship lol. I went from thinking my collection is complete to adding two dolls to the wish list

      > I also vaguely regret purchasing a doll during a pandemic LOL. But she is almost here!

v Resin, Acrylic, Glass or Silicone eyes? Why?

    49. ^ Resin, all the way. Acrylics always look dull to me, and silicon just doesn't quite do it, either. I like glass, but I'm very picky and only really like higher end eyes from makers like Silver, and they're hard to come by. Resin eyes are beautiful, capture light and sparkle, and they're easily accessible and customizable. I love Enchanted Doll, but like Mako and Vings quite a bit as well.

< I fell and broke my elbow yesterday. :( I can't do much doll stuff right now

v What's been the hardest thing for you to find for your dolls?

    50. ^ Shoes! My dolls have the tiniest fairy feet, it's ridiculous! My SD girl wears MSD size, so that's convenient, but my boys are 7 cm and SD shoes seem to start at 8. I tried to get on a hard to size feet list, but I was booted off because the size was apparently common. But common where?!

      > That being said, I just bought a big shoe haul, including a re-buy of some shoes I effed up. Here's to finally having all the big'uns shod.

v Let's repeat this one, I want to revel in shared frustration. What's been the hardest thing for you to find for your dolls?

    51. ^ A muscular female doll, who doesn't have a slightly exaggerated hourglass figure, is available in a colour somewhere between Iple's light brown, and dark brown, is 65cm tall, and has a face a bit like Hannah John Kamen. She'd be my dnd character's wife, and I've been searching for a Hot Minute, but I can't find anything right. The fantasia doll muscular body is close, but not perfect. Iple isn't muscular enough, Impl and miro are too stylized, Fantasiadoll is impossible to find. NobilityDoll is too short (the modding would be fine with me). I'm almost ready to sculpt my own.

< I just want to know when my current White Whale doll will be available. She's not a grail. I know she's being rereleased and is feasible to own, I just want her nowwww~

V What's one doll you'd love to see rereleased tomorrow, if you could?

    52. ^ I think the only limited doll I’d like to see available again is Dollprika Nival. I was really on the fence when he came out. But I think he’s a cool sculpt.

      > Can’t believe Sunday is already over :(

v Passing it down... Any limited sculpts you would like to see re-released?

    53. ^ I actually might be getting my wish! I have been bummed out that Mishidoll discontinued their Murphy sculpt, since I wasn't in the hobby yet last time she did a pre-order on it, and it seems like she might be rereleasing it next year, although in an updated version. Yay!

< Come on Fairyland, I wrote to you two times since I placed an order with you, I just want a shipping quote so I can pay the entire thing in one go!

v Is there a doll company that you never thought you'd get a doll from, but now you love them?

    54. ^ LoongSoul and its sister company, Charm Doll. While the older sculpts of LS had piqued my interest, they were still a little too stylized for my taste (not to mention how they were notorious for their waiting times, at least back then). However, when they began to rebrand their sculpting style into something more realistic, I finally caved in and ordered LS ZhuZhao. Even though the lanky body aesthetic took some getting used to, they weren't kidding about the posing power! I'm currently saving up to order his sister, who, coincidentally, will be from Charm Doll.

< Oh my lowrd, Kokichi, you're finally back home! A shame I didn't get to make any clothes for you while you were gone. D:

v Have you ever taken the plunge to order from an obscure or new BJD company/artist with no preexisting reviews yet? (If no, do you ever plan to?)

    55. Edit: I wasn't quick enough to post this so I'll answer the next question as well: I don't think I have ever bought from a new company before seeing reviews. And I think I probably won't just because I'm more into older dolls. So I guess this is a problem I'm unlikely to have to think about!

^ Yes! The doll I just got! I think when I first started the hobby I would never have thought that one day I would become obsessed with Dream of Doll boys (I didn't dislike them, I just wasn't interested). But here we are. I have bought one and now I want them all xD

< I have been sewing so many clothes lately and haven't bothered to take photos of my dolls actually wearing any of them. I've got this huge pile of unused doll clothes building up on my sewing table :sweat

v Do you have any "grail" items you're on the hunt for? Like a particular outfit or accessory you really wanted but missed out on?

    56. ^ For me, ‘grail’ is singular, a once in a lifetime thing so I DO already have my grail, UNOSS Aika and fortunately she did come with nearly all the UNOSS accessories from both full sets and then the extra clothing sets offered. A fellow collector who was as crazy about her as I am collected these items and when she passed, I was fortunate enough to buy them as a single purchase, an embarrassment of UNOSS treasure came in the box that day! I opened the box and just cried. There will never be another experience like that.

Some things on my greedy-greedy wishlist that I would love to find are
      • a Dollheart Fer for 1/4 scale dolls,
      • a Male Fer set,
      • rocking horse shoes for 1/3 and/or 1/4 (maybe both if lucky),
      • and I guess the most special item is the Volks balloon/porter chair. I’ll find one, and I’ll buy it! My wallet will cry but that’s what the extra money is for, to enjoy!

< sorting, sorting, working hard on my KonMari. Found my box of doll clothes and we are having a no-holds barred ‘try on everything‘ week. Can I be as ruthless with doll KonMari as I was with my own clothes? I’m thinking...no! :doh

V what is your favorite and then least favorite thing about the doll hobby in your own collecting habits. Not in the hobby at large, just in your own dolls/collection.

    57. ^ My least favorite thing is that I can be quite exacting about things that I want in terms of quality/appearance/etc. I usually have a very specific idea, so it can make me hesitate to buy things (especially in limited windows). This had backfired on me a few times, haha. My favorite thing is that I do tend to love the things I do bring home quite a lot.

< My eyes from Vings finally made it!

    58. ^ Does my Dollshe that I'm still waiting for after a year and seven months count? Of things I've recieved, probably the Dollzone Anita head ordered through a dealer.

< I'm currently on the lookout for another lady to join my group, but while there are a few I like I haven't found one I love.

V Is there any tyype of doll your having trouble finding?

    59. ^ hmm a while back I really wanted to get a pet for my dolls, but couldn't find one I really liked in the right scale. I think I decided they were all too unrealistic. So.. animal dolls. I had the most trouble finding them.

< I finally got my dslr back out the last few days and have actually been using it! (usually I'm phone pics all the way xD )

v What's your preferred kind of camera for doll photography?

    60. ^ I have a very nice DSLR with multiple lens options that I can take decent photos with, then edit the heck out of them in PS to make them marginally better....but lately I've been lazy and just been using my iPhone XS. I have all the editing capabilities at home that I do at work, but I generally prefer taking photos at work, because I have white walls and more light. So....whats the point of using a good camera when the photos will look like crap anyway due to poor apartment lighting? The one thing I miss working from work instead of home....that and my office chair omg
