Wearables The Sewing Project! - Sock Couture & Recycle wear [ Round 9 ]

Apr 9, 2013

    1. AngellDoll, welcome! You made cute clothes for your girl! Are you going to do the same image on the front of the hoodie?

Teddy, oh, I wish I had friends who are interested in crafting days! And how come you made a dress with pink flowers and piping, I thought you hated pink? The yellow dress is lovely, you'd never guess it used to be a baby dress!

Wolfboy, wow, what an organized post! :) Can't wait to see your progress! Your boys are so cute!

For all of you who asked about James' patterns:
isn't he the guy behind Undead Threads? I'm not sure! If he is, the site is here:
      http://twilightarms.com/dolls/patterns.html

Jany, your materials look promising! The black lace is very nice.

kayjay, oh, that's a nice pattern, I remember thinking about getting it a while ago!

    2. I'm out for this round, but I'll check in and cheer for everyone's progress.

    3. Well, here's your opportunity for her to get more.

      Teddy

    4. Poot!

Better luck with a future round.

      Teddy

    5. {laugh!} I do hate pink... but my dolls don't.

I don't mind it as much in small quantities as part of an overall outfit (they are very small pink flowers on lots of white background fabric... although the piping is pink too, it'a a LOUD and more-bearable shade - not a nasty pastel shade at all).

Two of the other dresses (also recycled from baby-clothes) are pastel pink... {shudder!!!}..., and another of them is white with pink trim... and that may be part of the reason why none of them have been started yet.

      Teddy

    6. I am so into sewing I forget to take pics :S
      hehe

      posting pics tonight! :D

    7. Same here, Latefa! There was an awesome flea market for kids' clothing close to here, and I made out like a bandit! Today I sewed a simple shirt that... turned out not to be as simple as all that, and I completely forget to take a picture of the dress I cut up for fabric. :doh I will at least take a picture of the shirt tomorrow!

    8. Welp, I seem to be doing this all backwards  I'll update all of my posts with pictures tomorrow, as it's ridiculously late!

I'm making pajamas for Penny, out of a sleeve of an old pajama top I chopped up years ago. I got the bottoms done today, but I got just enough fabric left for a very skimpy pajama top lol. I'll have to think what to do tomorrow..

EDIT: For the bottoms, I used ragdoll's tutorial on how to make jeans, I was kinda winging it because I sorted out the tube legs first before sorting out the crotch. I'm so proud of the elastic waist though, doing a french hem AND maching sewing with some old tiny bjd elastic.

      And with Penny wearing them.

    9. The pattern will not be quite the same - here's the actual design :P

      here are my materials:

and, please forgive me. . . I made this wig today. (so I'm pretty excited) And I took pictures of this jumper today. Here's a little photo.
And here's the gallery link. Love to everyone <3

also, today was my birthday ,,. ,,.
      total yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaays v

    10. I will hopefully be able to join for the Fantasy/ Sci-Fi round. I'm away at school for another month, and then instead of being a college student obsessed with expensive dolls, I'll be a graduate obsessed with expensive dolls! I now next to nothing about lolita or Japanese street fashion, so I looked up Dark Mori online. That's something I'll have to do for my dolls. I then stumbled into a listing of goth sub-fashion.:o So I'll need to participate in that round.
Thank you Keladry for making this series! Getting to share should be motivational!

    11. My progress so far - I've also changed my plans some!

      Ava (Unoa Sist):

    12. Kayjay: shame poor little thing! Now is the time to rectify that situation.

    13. The hand-print wrap-around is adorable, Keladry.

      Teddy

    14. Keladry, that little pinafore is adorable <3 <3

edit: hi all - I have managed to sprain my left wrist quite badly. I'd like to complete my project as it should take about a day, but in case I realise I can't do it, I'll say so and have to drop out. I hand-sew everything, so losing the use of one hand is gonna really be a problem. Typing is very painful too, so I'm using one hand mostly. TT_TT so. sad.

    15. Here is my materials pile. I make my own patterns as I go along and for a lot of the simpler pieces I don't use them at all. I have a stash of templates for Lusion size from other projects that I might use for the top of her dress, but otherwise I'm going to wing it and see what happens. I'll probably supplement what you see here with some fabric paint, eyelets, and maybe some ribbon.

Here are a few inspiration pics for Vincent's outfit. Going to take this as an opportunity to stock up on some punk/goth basics.

If for some reason I end up with extra time, here are some ideas for a second outfit for Cordelia. I have lots of old watch bits I could use too, but these outfits take forever to make so might have to post it after the fact:

    16. Keladry: Those are really cute prints :)

ankhensepnamun: Same here, I've been winging left, right and centre.

I've not been very good with this whole planning business, I just go "Huh, I can make XYZ with this fabric" and then off I go and wing it so hard. I think there's also this element of wanting to make sure I finish one doll's outfit before I declare the next one; I know I want to make a tartan kilt for Natalie my Withdoll Girl, but I don't want to 'officially' say I'm making it before I finish Penny's pajamas.

Which won't take too long; I've almost completed her top. Originally I wanted to follow this tutorial on super cute nightgowns, but since I didn't have enough fabric left I changed the pattern to be a normal bodice.

I just need to hem the overlapping front parts and add snaps and fake buttons to it*. At the moment it looks more like Aladdin's vest lol.

*Am I allowed to cheat and say I'm finished when really I need to buy the snaps and buttons to sew on?

    17. Yeek!

I hope you recover quickly - don't push it. Last time I sprained mine, it didn't recover properly until months later, by which point I had problems witht he other hand/wrist because I'd been favouring the injured one so much that I'd overused the "uninjured" one.

      Teddy

    18. update! i fractured a bone in my wrist so it's in a splint.
it may have to be operated on. they'll do a 3d scan soon.
      I have to pull out.
It's infuriating as I already had the sleeve pattern made. it was gonna be mutton-leg like.
and I'd added pockets to the design.
I'll make it when I'm better. focusfocus time for my studies instead, I suppose. ...I was gonna do the project as a treat for myself *weep*

    19. Awww, that's too bad! I hope it won't have to be operated on, but in any case, I wish you a speedy recovery! If you want to, you can always finish this project once you're better and post the pictures here then.

    20. thanks - I'll definitely complete the project ^ ^
I really like the idea, and was super pumped for it, so I'll do that.
I suppose I'll leave this post to be edited for when that time comes ;)

      edit meeeee

    21. Oh no!

Fingers crossed for it not needing an operation!!

At elast there will be future sewing projects for you to join in once you've recovered, and there's nothign to stop you completing this one after the deadline too.

      Good Luck!

      Teddy

    22. Angeldoll - I hope your wrist gets better very quickly so you get back to finishing your project (((hugs)))
Everyone's projects look great so far. I've managed to extract a shirt from my husband (not easy, he's a bit of a clothes hoarder even though half of his clothes are ancient) which is a fine cotton with blue and white checks, so that's going to form the main part of my dress.

    23. Wow! It's interesting activity~
I thinks I missed this round, hope I can joint the new round next time!!
My patterns always put in my locker long time!

    24. thanks, Keladry, Teddy and kayjay.

@kayjay: that sounds like a lovely shirt to work from.
looking forward to seeing everyone's work c:
also I can already type better one-handed now. it's all about dividing the keyboard into separate parts ^-^

    25. What doll is Anya?

    26. ok now I have no idea why I lost all the energy!
I may finish stuff for the round and may not

anyways.. I still check the thread all the time to get me MOVING :/

    27. guh~!

I am super behind due some new furry additions to the family coming a little earlier than expected :sorry

I have decided I'm going to do a wa lolita inspired outfit for my Leekeworld art body Iris "Kyoto" for sure though, I will be drafting my own pattern due to awkward proportions :sweat

ETA: I'll use the stocking pattern I made last time and I am going to try this pattern for the panties

I'm currently eyeing up some old work shirts for fabric but I am going to have a mooch around for some bargain-bin clothes to possibly be used this weekend

I want to keep things fairly simple, maybe something like this

    28. Anya is a Dollmore Kid Girl Sona. She's quite a flexible mold, I think ^-^

    29. Thank you. I have been wanting a child like doll that is not tiny. So will check it out.

    30. Ok.. I finished sewing a dress for my Minifee .. made of my shirt..

Before I post it's pics.. let me show u some progress pics of the ones I did before

Here I was creating the pattern on my Minifee:

By this I will be done sewing for
      Ahmed
      Latefa
And the Minifee (who now has a name Shtazt)

      3 more outfits for:
      Mohammed
      Shamma
      Reem

    31. awww Latefa, looking at your work makes me jelly that I can't sew right now :<
I discovered, however, that at home my mother has a neglected sewing machine (I think it's mechanical rather than electrical), so I'm excited to see it.

    32. I'll get to work today, promise! Life has been pretty busy ... but if I'm lucky, I got into a post-grad programme :) So that would be worth it.

I got the pattern ready for the pyjama bottoms, still not quite sure about the top ... the original one is a bit complicated, so I'll be trying to figure out a pattern for that today.

    33. The pattern beat me big time. I'll have to try a simpler version :sigh

    34. hhhh u guys! I thought the deadline is tomorrow so I stayed up working on one more outfit!

:-D Almost gave up finishing the remaining outfits!!

Ok so it's NOT done.. so that I know that the deadline is May 5th then am gonna go to sleep now ^_^

    35. Seeing everyone's progress is fun! I got some work in on Jericho's tee shirt and jeans. I already made the patterns a good while ago, so I was spared the drafting drama on these 2 items. Though for his long underwear shirt I will have to make the pattern first. I think it'll be simple enough though. I have to finish up Jericho's jeans, and then I will try to take him out and get some pics!

My sympathies Angeldoll on your injury. :( I wish you the quickest of healing!

    36. having my MRI scan tomorrow morning! Eep! Let's hope all is well...

    37. I hope so! Keep us updated.

I got Jericho's pants finished and took him out for a photo shoot. The scary moment was when he did a face plant. :horror:He is okay though - no scrapes on resin or face up! I think I lost about 5 years off my life though.

These are made out of an old pair of my jeans. The back:

      And the front:

And the whole outfit! The shirt is made out of an old shirt of mine that was almost literally falling apart. I wanted it to look like one of his shirts that he should probably throw out but won't. I added some holes/wear on the sleeve hemmed edges and shirt hem. The rest of the holes were already there. :) The hat is out of a knit hat.

Next weekend it'll be his other shirt! :D

    38. Jany: keep us updated please. I feel for you. Nothing more frustrating than when you want to do something and are unable.

    39. Pepperonipizza: I simply love the way you used the bits that have holes in to make his t shirt. It looks so cute.

    40. Latefa, wow, you were productive! Very nice progress. The blue fabric looks hard to work with... Did it give you any trouble?

Jany, keeping my fingers crossed for you for the post-grad! And that's too bad about the pattern... I know how frustrating it is when a pattern doesn't turn out as planned!

pepperonipizza, the jeans are AWESOME! Wow, they look so real! And I love the worn look of the shirt. (My husband has a few shirts like that that I absolutely musn't thrown away.)

The pattern I altered for the balloon shorts didn't work out, I didn't add enough seam allowance... I'll try again today!

    41. Jany: what pattern was it? I can't seem to find a picture. Maybe we can help you out.

    42. Keladry yup! it was slipping everywhere! hehe.. I had to re cut one of the sides.. my mistake for NOT pin it everywhere!

    43. pepperonipizza, I love the shirt (I got the same with my guy; there may be giant holes in the buttock area of his trousers, but darnit, it's still wearable ;) )

I'm really sorry I got too excited last week; I think seeing teddy's and Latefa's work just spurred me on!

      I'd like to add Natalie, my Withdoll Girl to this challenge;

I've decided for all the socks I'm going to do the usual tights or hoodies (using the DoA tutorials found here and here) And for one pair I'd like to try and recreate ira_scargeear's lovely sweater, I really like what she did with the stripy fabric :D

With the tartan cotton I'll try to make a kilt from this GI Joe tutorial for Natalie and with the denim circle skirt I cut out aaages ago I'mma gonna make it all ruffly and cute for Penny. I can't decide between the layered skirt or the fluted hem skirt! But I am planning an ombre bleach effect for it like this:
(I love what KnottiNIKKI did to this shirt; her tutorial is here)

For that yucky polyester lining, I'm actually planning to do a sheer blouse with this Burdastyle pattern. I'm so glad I got fray check!

      Penny gets:
Pajamas - done, kinda (that top was a failure!)
      Sheer blouse
      Ruffly skirt
      Pair of sock leggings

      and Natalie gets:
      A sock hoody
      Kilt
      and some tights.

    44. chrystal, I didn't post a pic because my camera was unable to pick up the details on the shirt I was trying to replicate in doll scale. The sleeves are the problem - the front of the shirt has got a yoke thingy that goes down to just over the *ahem* chest part, the sleeves are raglan cut and ruffled in front and over the shoulders, and attached straight (ruffle-free) and with a regular sleeve cut (armscye? I'm not good with technical terms in foreign languages) in the back. The mixed cut (raglan in front and regular in the back) is enough to confuse me already, and the ruffles aren't helping.
I'm just going to admit defeat and do regular sleeves, and maybe add a collar or something. Won't look as "girly" but still nice enough, and I can practise making collars in doll scale.

Everyone, great work! I hope to even finish one set this round, life has been crazy with the post-grad thing (still waiting for feedback on that one) and my car breaking down on top of everything.

    45. Small update, I got Niamh's skirt done at least:

The lace used to be a shirt's cuff, the waistband is made of sock. Sorry she looks so white in this pic, it was the only way I could make all the black show up :sweat

    46. Thanks guys for the nice comments on Jericho's outfit. I guess I am not the only person loathe to part with the hole-y clothes I love.

Jany - those sleeves do sound confusing. Sometimes it is best to simplify the design so you can make it work for you. Good luck with your schoolwork - and also with your car breaking down! Niamh's skirt looks really nice! Very clever to use the lace from a sleeve cuff. :)

adhara - that is quite a fun list you've got there! :D It's easy to get carried away with these threads. I've still got three things I know I would like to make if I have time. I bet your dolls are loving this thread - they get lots of neat stuff this way! ;)

Latefa - your outfits are so neat. The blue dress - amongst your other ones - is just gorgeous! :D

    47. Thanks guys :D am trying to add more effort and details to my outfits .. used to just cut and sew but not anymore .. thanks to this thread!! :D

here is what I did in 15 minutes XD

    48. Wow Latefa! You're certainly ploughing right through those projects, well done!

      Teddy

    49. Great job, Latefa!

      Thank you, pepperonipizza!

I got the sock sweater done ... only I changed my mind about halfway and decided to make it a sock top thingy, to be worn with or without a long-sleeved top underneath. Currently Katie decided it's warm enough like this.

    50. I think I've got some semblance of a pattern for the pyjama top ... I like the ruffled look, so I'll keep the general idea of a low yoke with a ruffled part attaching to it, but I substituted the sleeves with some regular ones (except they'll have elastic at the cuffs for more ruffly details). We'll see how it works out ...
(The topmost piece of paper is a draft for the collar, but I'll adapt it to the actual neckline circumference so I didn't cut it out yet.)

Thanks to everyone who crossed fingers for me - we're picking up my car today AND I got into post-grad school! :celebrate Today's my lucky day :) So now I've got my head free for doll things again, and consequently got those wretched PJs done! The shirt did its best to resist me, but I beat it:

    51. great work everybody!! *cheers*
also adhara, thanks for all the links to those patterns.

    53. Haha, yeah, it's the first time I've actually been serious about sewing for them and they're loving it as much as I am :D

No problem! I like googling for patterns and tutorials far too much lol.

Today I cut up most of the socks, and managed to sew the 'oversized' hoody in a few hours. I shrunk the pattern down too much, and the hoody is now like it's one dress size bigger than normal. It'd probably fit a normal MSD perfectly!

    54. Jany: I love her pjs.

I cannot wait for the next round :D

    57. I'm running terribly late this time. But my Tassilo (he likes Taz) arrived a few days ago. He's still a little pale, but I love him :aheartbea

Here he's sitting on a pile of old clothes.

He likes the stripy jersey and asked for a long sleeved t-shirt like this:

The pants I made in round 7 were to small and poor Taz had nothing to wear when he got here. So far I knitted a sweater for him and made a new pair of pants. I didn't exactly follow the rules with the sweater, since it is not sewn and only sort of recycled (I bought the yarn to knit a pair of socks).
The pants are from recycled material though. I used an old shopping bag to make them. The pattern is from Inuchick.

Here is the (belated) progress report:

Since the last pants I made were too tight, we had a fitting before I got the sewing machine out. Sorry for the grainy pics. I took these on my cell phone.

And here is the almost finished product. Button and button hole are still missing.

    58. How's it coming along, everyone?

It seems like there's a lot of recycling gettign done - Yaaay!

I'm hanging in here - I have another dress approaching done, but can't share photo's as our camera is terminally ill (the cover holding the batteries and card in place won't stay shut. I tried taping it but there was nowhere to stick the tape without coverig the controls). Once the dress is finished, I'll try for a shot while holding the battery cover in place, since I don't knwo when we'll get a chance to shop for a replacement camera.

I have Saturday left clear for catching up on some more of the sewing, so I may get something else started (and , dare I hope, finished) before this one is over.

    59. Mine's not coming alone very well.... I've not been well, then we've had family stresses and then... well there's always something else to do or worry about rather than sew. So this has enlightened me to why I don't get any sewing done!!! I still have to cut mine out and sew. With the bank holiday coming up though I'm hopeful I can find a couple of hours spare.

    60. Good luck with it Kathryn!

I still haven't finished my planned outfit fromt he previous Sewing Project.
