Wearables The Sewing Project! - Sock Couture & Recycle wear [ Round 9 ]

Apr 9, 2013

1. Go here for the next round:
Round 10 : School & Work wear

How does this work?

Every round, you try to make one complete outfit (or more) that fits the theme as you interpret it. It doesn't have to conform 100% to it. During the four weeks, you post your plans, inspiration images, progress pictures etc. It's no contest, there is no winner, we all just try to motivate each other.

This round's theme is Sock Couture & Recycle Wear! Every item this round should be made from human clothes or other recycled materials!

Week 1 - 04/11 to 04/14:

* Pick a doll and post their name, sculpt and picture
* Decide what you want to make and post a description or inspiration images
* If you use pre-made patterns, decide on which ones to use
* If you make your own patterns, get started on that.

If you have trouble finding or making your patterns, ask for help in the thread! :)

Week 2 - 04/15 to 04/21:
* Buy or get done with your patterns.
* Gather your materials (fabrics, notions etc.) and post a picture/pictures of them!
* Get started with the sewing and post progress pictures!

Week 3 and 4 - 04/22 to 05/05:

* Try to get the whole outfit done!
* If you have time left over, make some accessories!

When you are done, make sure to post a picture of the completed outfit, if possible on the doll!

Future rounds:
[ Round 10 : 05/06 - 06/02 ] School & work wear (includes military uniforms)
[ Round 11 : 06/03 - 06/30 ] Fantasy & science fiction
[ Round 12 : 07/01 - 07/28 ] Sleepwear & comfy home wear
[ Round 13 : 07/29 - 08/25 ] Punk, goth & grunge
[ Round 14 : 08/26 - 09/22 ] Basics

3. I will be joining this one again. I have a lot of clothes to be made in doll clothes. I will make pictures later and decide what I will make and for who.

4. I'm in too! Have lots of human stuffs to re-purpose for lots of dolly stuffs. Now, who to pick?

5. I may regret it after not finishing the reious one yet... but I'm ahead on this one already

Two Christmases ago, I spent Christmas day using old cotton men's shirts (and the occasional child's dress or skirt) to cut out (mostly SD10 size) dolls clothes.

Here's some of the shirts taken appart and ready for cutting out the doll outfits:

And here's some of the dresses cut and ready to sew.

I've sewn a few of them, started a few more, and haven't been started the rest.... So I intend to use this sewing project to finsihd some of them for some of my SD girls....

Teddy

6. I'm going to give this a go too, not sure exactly *who* I am going to dress though, it will depend on what I can find for recycling :aninja:

I should probably try for an outfit for Kyoto (LW Iris) and Six (LW Ashley) since they dont have a stitch to wear though :sweat

ETA: Wow thats quite a start Teddy!

7. Thanks

I can't say who until I go throguh the ready-cut outfts to see whihc ones there are still to be done, and which of the girls they'd be best for

As far as I recall, I already made up all the yellow dresses for Elfie (RML/Volks), a couple of tartan dresses for Hannah (RML/Volks), a lilac flowered white suit for Cressida (RML/Volks), a red gingham suit for Edith (AiL/Volks), and have started putting together a wine and pale-sage bustle dress for Nest (RML/Volks), and a white with pink flowers dress for Cressida.... and a red gingham dress for... erm... one of them.

Beyond that I forget what is cut out.

It's possible that I have too many dolls and too many plans for outfits for them!!!

Teddy

8. I think you speak for the both of us.

This is really going to be a fun project. Already I have a pair of old jeans, a grey long john shirt, and old favorite tee shirt of mine and plans for some lounge pants I have been hanging onto for awhile after I finally admitted defeat and put them in the I'can't-wear-these-any-longer pile. I have misplaced them somewhere around here in my attempts to keep them "safe" (always dangerous) until I had the time to cut something out of them. :doh I'll find them. At one point.

I'll be sewing for Jericho, my Iplehouse YID Aaron. I need to snap a pic of him and the clothing I will cut up, which I will do sometime tomorrow if I have a chance. I'm excited to get started on the project! :D

9. OK. Gonna try this again, even though I've failed the last two? Three? rounds I've tried to participate in. I've already got some way cute socks I bought JUST to make into dolly clothes, just need to choose who is going to be getting their new stuff made first, since I've got socks for outfits for a few of the resin kids in the house.

10. I am looking forward to seeing everyone's creations. I'm not in, but enjoy seeing what others do.

11. Teddy: so how many dolls do you have?

12. BJD's or dolls in general?

BJD's, I have... erm... {does hasty mental headcount}... {double-checks it on a piece of paper}... fourty one, ranging in size from a Lusion Diash down to four RealPuki, 12 of them SD size (3 boys and 9 girls).... I've never counted the other dolls and bears but the house is full of them (this is just one corner of our living room: http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f190/guyelfkin/Dolls/PICT0703.jpg)

Of course, they all need clothes and I have more plans for outfits to make them than I have time to sew... hence joinig in with these Sewing Projects.

Teddy

13. Fourty-one?! Wow. You're one lucky guy!

That being said - I'm in! Up for sewing dummy duty are Katie (Elfdoll Yuan hybrid) and my incoming Iplehouse Bianca who is still nameless (but should be here within the week, she's stuck in customs as far as tracking tells me). :)

14. I will be sewing for:

Ava - Unoa Sist hybrid

Julie - Aidolls Sujeong hybrid & Lacey - DC Merlin

[ He is not here yet, so no picture yet! ]
Percy - Souldoll Dudy

Planned outfits:

Ava:
* simple sleeveless blouse with beading and lace (my own pattern)
* balloon shorts (babtarragons tutorial, slightly modified)
* socks with lace
Julie:
* simple sleeveless blouse with beading and lace (my own pattern)
* balloon shorts (babtarragons tutorial, slightly modified)
* socks with lace
Lacey:
* simple sleeveless blouse with beading and lace (my own pattern)
* bloomers (NekoSam's tutorial)
Percy:
* lolita shorts
* shirt with sailor collar
* socks with lace (GraceFaerie pattern, slightly modified)

Here is my inspiration for the sleeveless blouses, only mine will have lace and beading and will be lined instead of being finished with bias tape:

15. am in :D

I will post more information later... but am planning to go for 3 + outfits ;) this is gonna be a huge challenge for me! :D

16. You wouldn't say that if you ahd to sew for them all.... although I don't sew for the really teenie tineis (PukiFee, PukiPuki, Realpuki, and Banjis), so that cuts the number of BJD's I sew for down to 30.

Teddy

17. I know what you mean, Teddy! I've got 36 dolls (although a lot of them share bodies, so it's something like 10 bodies and a whole bunch of heads), and I can't sew fast enough!

18. I envy your ability to do the body-sharing thing . I've tried (for a while I even had one head that was shared by two bodies for the sake of different bustlines for different period costumes)... but I just can't do it, so the floating heads all gradually got their own bodies.

And then ther's all the other dolls and bears clamoruing fo clothes too... {sigh!}

Even body sharing, it still means that you have 36 different personalities to sew for.... just don't think about it too much or it might put you off!

Teddy

19. Now you put it that way ... :nowords:
I tried the body-sharing thing once. Didn't work because I couldn't mod the head to fit and obviously couldn't do anything to the body because the other head wouldn't have fit anymore. :sigh

20. For me it didn't work becuase I wanted the characters to interact and they couln't do that if they were hsaring a body (plus I seldom got aorund to changing the heads over and re-dressign the body for that head, so one would remain on the head for months and the other head just sit unused in a box... so they all ended up with their own bodies.

Teddy

21. I'd like to join in please :3

Except I don't quite know what clothing scraps I got lying around, so I can't say for sure which doll I'd be sewing for! But for sure I'll be sewing for Penny, my Cerisedolls Lyse.

EDIT: Late, but here's a pic of Penny:

And here's my stash of recycled fabrics and socks.
From top left going clockwise, I got
A satin? sateen? sleeve from an old pajama
Grey polyester lining from a jacket I relined with nicer fabric
Pink cotton from a loose double bed sheet
Tartan fabric from a wheat bag
A glove
A denim circle skirt I never got round to finishing
A pair of socks
and a satin/sateen sash thing that belonged to a missing top

I may not use them all, but we'll see how it goes.

For my minifee body I will sew a-line dresses mostly

23. Wow, Latefa, that's organized and quite a numbeer to sew for to

Those girls Emirati outfits are beautiful - so elegant

Teddy

24. To join in on the body sharing bit - I can't do it either. I want my character to just be his character, so it just doesn't work. I do have a couple floating heads though still, and it is frustrating. Keladry and Teddy both have me beat in numbers. I only have a little over 20, but share the same overwhelm at times trying to sew for them all! O.o

Latefa - those are some beautiful clothing that you have for your inspiration pics. It's going to really be fun to see them come together! :D

Keladry - I can't wait to see what you make for your DC Merlin. I almost bought one myself, but got my Jodie instead. Have you sewn anything for him yet? I find my Jodie a challenge with his body shape, but a fun one. :)

I am going to try and sew 2 full outfits for this challenge. To those of you who are taking on even more - the best of luck!

25. Sewing for

Cordelia Valentine: Dollmore Lusion Black Dahlia
Vincent: Souldoll Vito

For materials I have a pair of checkered pajama pants (dress for Cordelia), some bits of an old pair of grey cargo pants (shorts or pants for Vincent) and lots of t-shirt remnants left over from making t-shirt yarn. I'll have to do some rummaging in my stash of things. I'd like to make Cordelia another steampunk outfit at some point as well...

some inspiration for the checkered print dress:

26. EDIT:( I love my camera but damn it makes my photos huge >< I apologize )

I'll be joining in as it seems my second girl is finally on her way home and she'll be needing clothes!
Being a bit of a hoarder and never throwing out those ruined clothes will make fabric easy for this
[IMG]
I'll be using Dove since my other girl isn't here yet and I may make something else for Dove as well time willing.
Dove is a RS Mei WS, My incoming Girl is an Iplehouse Asa Ns.[IMG]

pepperonipizza , Teddy thank you :D I am trying to find a good fabric for them =D

28. I am so excited to see everybody's ideas! This is only my third round of the project, but I think I'm hooked! So much inspiration.

I'll be sewing for my new Dreaming Doll Airi twins. Warning: nekkid dollies in need of clothes.

And this is Minette Brocade--goes by Minnow

I got so excited when the girls informed me that they were Yama Girls, 'cause I LOVE that aesthetic. They are a little nervous about it, because they don't want to look like most Japanese street fashion--like they just spent $$$ on impractical clothing. They are real mountain girls--living on the mountain and only shopping at "The Bright Feather Mall"--which is a joke of a name, they tell me. Bright Feather Mall is a three room log cabin thrift shop, nothin' new or fancy to be found.

These pictures come closest to the sorts of clothes they'd wear.

And fabric (old clothes)!

Minnow wants a flimsy old dress and big boot socks (from an antique newborn dress and baby socks).

I'm trying to stick to these two for now, but if I get done early, I might add some extra stuff.

29. Plans for the twins ae looking good, MissEmily

I had a dig around in mthe chaos that is my craft supplies and I found most of the already-cut and/or part-sewn dolls clothes cut from old clothes:

One outfit, however, appears to have gone into hiding... if I find it soon I'll start with tht one s it's part made an the most detailed design... if not I'll work on these others.

Here are some of the girls I'll be sewing for:
Cressida (RML/Volks SD10 hybrid), Edith AiL/Volks Seirei hybrid), Nesta (RML/long-limb Volks SD10 hybrid) and Nettle (Kaye WIggs/Volks Swarrico hybrid)

Then there's Elfie (RML/Volks Swarrico hybrid) and Hannah (RML/Volks SD10-modded boy-to-girl-body hybrid):

Teddy

30. I have the pics of fabrics and also my doll, but no inspiration photos yet....It's pretty basic what I will make for him.

Here's my fabric:

And my doll, wearing one of the hats I made for him tonight:

The grey long john shirt I will cut up and make him a miniature of it - as closely as I can. I have some knit hats that I will make him mini versions of. The green tee will become an old well loved tee shirt of his, that he won't throw out. Don't know if I can find those lounge pants - they were supposed to be the other half of that outfit, basically his pajamas. But perhaps Jericho would still wear out that old grungy tee. The brown tee shirt I just threw in there in case I want to make another shirt for him. The jeans will become his jeans.

31. I am almost finished with 2 outfits

here is a pic for now.. more to come when I have some sleep. Been awake for almost 30 hours

32. Thanks for organising this marvellous sewing project, Keladry! I've been lurking here, but I'm joining in as well now!
(Looks like I'll be staying here for a while too, as I wouldn't want to miss working on any of the themes planned for the coming months either:sweat)

This time I'll be sewing for:
(1) Sven (for now, might still change his name) - DiM Edmon (SD)
(2) Robin - DiM Alpon (MSD)
[IMG] Ferial and Robin
(3) Ferial - DiM Luria (MSD)
Her body just arrived, so while I'm sewing for her, I'll also finish her face-up and match it a bit better to her PlanetDoll body. (Though the match is better than it seems in this picture.)
Maybe this will even help me fully finish my projects, which I'm not always good at ;).

33. cool I'm not too let for this round.
I'm currently revamping my Grell cosplay coat so I'm going to use the fabric for my aod An girl, Axel.

34. Wow Latefa, that was some quick work!
I haven't even started, but I've got a few things here that I'll most likely use (pics coming soon) ... more may be found more once I raid my wardrobe, but lots of things got thrown out when I moved house last summer, I didn't think of recycling because I've got a huge fabric stash with leftovers from human-sized projects anyway :-/ Stoopid me.

35. I was feeling pretty under the weather today - and experience has taught me NOT to try sewing anything that requires concentration when I'm not feeling well! So instead, I cut something like 24 pairs of socks out of leftover fabric scraps. Oh well!

36. Taz, my IOS S, is shipping!
He will need some more things to wear, so I'm signing up for this round.
I'll go through my closet and see what I can recycle. Will post pictures later.

37. Keladry, Yeah, I know how that works, it's why it took me so long to join, and it's also why I've been knitting socks and armwarmes only the last 2 months or so ;) I hope you feel better soon!
But WOW 24 pairs of socks, still quite an achievement for one day, that's dedication! Besides, you can never have too many socks

38. Hi there :) I'm new to the Sewing Project~
I'd like to make an outfit out of an old shirt.
I'll post photographs and so on

I made some jumpers out of socks not too long ago. The link to my forum post is here, if you have some free time to peruse my few photographs <3

39. Wow!

That's fast work

Teddy

40. I had some friends over for one of our regular crafting-days today. I was busy playing host for a lot of it, but got a bit of work done on one of my outfits, a dress in white cotton with little pink flowers, edged in pink piping... It's looking horribly horribly cutesey.

Teddy

41. I’ve been going through my stash of old clothes, socks etc, and this is what I’ll be using for my 2 boys and what I’ll be making for them:

(1) Materials and planned items for Sven:
[IMG] [IMG]
Have got a very basic casual outfit in mind for him, using“James’ SD patterns” I found a link for a few years ago, and which I altered.
(Think it was here on DoA, if I can find the link again, I’ll post it, but haven’t had any luck so far).
- I’ll be making a pair of jeans out of my favorite pair that’s so full of holes I can no longer wear them myself.
(Great to be able to hold on to them by turning them into something useful for my boy;))
- From the shirt that’s way too big for me, I’ll be making a T-shirt with long sleeves.
- The old baby pants are going to be turned into a sweater.
(Might use some of that white scarf too, not sure yet.)

(2) Materials and planned items for Robin:
[IMG] [IMG]
I'd like to make some clothes for him in a sort of mori style, using my own patterns as well as some from the same source as above,
which I’ve downsized for MSDs and then altered.

Planned clothing from the materials selected (linked to the items in the picture):
A= small girl’s tights that are going to be made into a T-shirt with long sleeves.
B= An old child’s blouse and/or my old kitchen curtain for a pair of trousers that end just below the knee.
C= A moth-eaten sweater I found at a second-hand shop. I really loved the colour, so decided to buy it despite the many moth holes,
it was only about 1$ and has a small zipper at the back that might come in handy for something. And it’s still great for making an
MSD sweater!
D= two belts my Mom doesn’t use will be turned into scarves.
E= My favourite old pair of organic cotton pyjama’s will be used for a t-shirt with long sleeves.
F= baseball shirt parts I already cut out of old t-shirts.
G= either the blue t-shirt or beige small t-shirt scraps will be used for a pair of comfy, baggy trousers.
Tip: Got this lovely beige, thick organic cotton T-shirt material from a small shop for organic clothing. The shopkeeper/tailor couldn’t use
these scraps because they were too small or flawed. When talking about what kind of things I made, I was given what lay discarded
under the cutting table!

H= some extra material like old boxer shorts (sorry if that’s too much information ) for, well, I guess if I get very inspired and come
up with something else along the way.

Some inspiration images I found (http://pinterest.com/dollydandy/dolly-kei-grimoire-and-mori-girls-boys/):

(3) [IMG] For Ferial (the girl in the yellow dressing gown) I’ve still got to work out the exact plans and materials I’ve come up with so far (got a bit overzealous there ), so I’ll post more on that later. But I have already found some inspiration images for what I’ve got in mind for her on the same link as above:

What I’ve (now ;)) roughly limited myself to for her are:
- boots made from an old teddy bear, that I made a few years ago from an old coat, so I guess that’s double recycling!
- coat made from a cream colored ‘wooly’ sock and fabric, like in picture
- baggy trousers
- leggings
- long blouse with a belt

*_* Hope I'll be able to finish all this on time...

42. Wolfboy, your inspiration and materials look scrumptious! And thanks for including *what* you were making everything out of. I always like to know the histories of fabric. Happy sewing!

43. I'm thinking of using this pattern* for a hoodie. (*ahem: pages)

The hoodie will look like this one, but will have an acrylic drawing on the front <3

and this is Anya~
[IMG]
(I made this little playsuit from a SOCK hee hee)

I think I'll use the next project to make something for my arriving doll! I'm veeeeeeeeeeeeeery excited about her!!

44. Also, dear Wolfboy, I think you'll appreciate this link . I'm certain that through your inspiration images you've heard of Dolly Kei. It's marvellous <3 <3

45. Thanks MissEmily, love you're inspiration images. Happy sewing too!

AngellDoll: That playsuit you made for Anya is so cute! Thanks for the Dolly Kei link!

46. hehe, no problem... I've gone through all the older pages of the site and now simply have to patiently wait for it to update TT_TT
I love dolly kei, it makes me really happy~
And thanks for the compliment. No, really - I think only two people in my close vicinity have seen it, so it's sometimes hard to keep up the morale. (you know, it's not enough just looking at it and thinking "I could have done X better; I could have tucked the straps into the fabric... etc.")

47. James' patterns--I can't seem to find them now, either, though I've been searching for a while. Finally found this site, which reposts all of James' original patterns.

48. You're absolutely awesome!:abow: All the links I could find didn't work anymore.

Finished my first item, a sweater for Robin, before going to bed last night.
That's one down and still loads to do...

49. Teddy ya they are basic items that require nothing but good sewing and some impelishments. (Lace/beads/ and stuff to be added later)

wow amazing inspirations I see here ;)

50. Better late than never - materialz!

There's an old grey top I don't wear any more, a pair of socks I found at a clearance sale, leftover scraps from two shirts (teal and black lace) that got combined into a frankenshirt for my sis, and (*sigh*) my favorite pair of PJs whose elastic gave way.

The socks will become a sock sweater which Katie and my incoming Bianca will probably share. The lace and teal scrap thingy will be combined into a skirt for Bianca. If I can find a tiny zipper, the grey top will become a hoodie ... if not, I'll save it for the time being. And my favorite PJs will hopefully become Christine's favorite PJs, so I'm hereby entering her, too. :)

51. Okay.... I got a bit of work done on one of thedresses that needed minimal work to finish it:

This sleeveless dress was cut from an old baby pinafore-dress.

The skirt is made from the majority of the original dress. The bodice is carefully pieced-together from the teensie-tiny bits of fabric that were left of the bib-front-and-back pieces (and shoulder straps) once I cut the skirt piece off from armpit to armpit across the original dress. I also re-used the original lace trim as the decoration on the bodice-front.

Teddy

52. it's lovely - your dolls look so picturesque together too~

53. Thanks

Teddy

54. She's a lucky girl: that's a beautiful dress, Teddy!

55. Is it too late to join in? I have a few items to recycle into clothes for my dolls.

I won't be too ambitious as this is the first time I've tried something like this, so I'll stick to the one outfit, just need to check my fabric stash and patterns for inspiration. I'll make something for my one and only SD girl, my Peakswood Sky on a Custom House body. I've never stitched anything for a SD before so it'll be a challenge for me!

56. Ok so here is my Sky, pattern (one I've had for a few years but never had anyone to sew for) and some inspiration pics. Next to do is rummage through my used fabrics and stuff (the fun bit!). I'm thinking something layered, trimmed with some lace and maybe a bag if I can figure out how to make one.

57. Awwww. thanks.

Happy rammaging to find the fabrics, Kathryn.

58. Thanks Teddy :) I love the dress you've recycled, my Sky is quite jealous as she owns but one outfit ;)
