Contest The not-so-secret-anymore Concept Art Contest

I know, my anxiety about the contest is through the roof!

 

I have 2 top choices and I wonder if either of them will be the winner

 

If I remember correctly from previous years during contests where only the mods were voting, the entries that won were among the ones with the most likes. It's not a written in stone thing, but a good way to gauge who are more likely to win. ^.~ (even in the normal contests where DoA users vote, and not just the mods, "likes" are pretty often a giveaway)

 

Then mine truly doesn't stand a chance, mine is one of the least liked ones if I remember right (I've been avoiding that thread like the plague cause it made me feel really bad about my art)

 

Same here, I definitely stand no chance. I do want to know who wins though and if it's one of my favorites ^_^

 

I would hope that's not how they'd do this contest. Some of our entries were up much much longer than others, so a lot of the newer ones never had time to get likes. In other contests they all go up at once, so it's more fair....

 

I also second this. Mine didn't get much likes at all. I think it is one with the least likes. I also keep avoiding that thread because of that.

I'm also curious who it will be, though.

 

Well, it's not like I can read mind's or anything of the sort, or like I am friends with any of the mods. I was just saying that if we look back (I don't know if we can actually do that) at previous contests where only the mods voted, the winners were among the more "liked" entries. I remember the poem one from last year, the winner had probably the most amount of likes. I can't recall what was the one the year before that one, but I also recall it being a popular entry that won -- it might have been a photography one? Regardless, I am not really saying that's how they'll pick them, but more how likely it is hat a more popular entry will win based on past year's winners. In certain groups certain things are just more popular than others, based on aesthetic preferences. If it's popular amongst the users, then it will probably be liked by the people running the forum as well because most mods were also users at one point, not mods. I didn't mean it to be taken any other way, so I do apologize if it sounds negative or judgmental.

Just to make double sure, I want to reiterate that I didn't mean for it to sound like the mods pick the winner based on popularity or likes, instead I meant that if certain entries were well liked by the rest of DoA, there is a high change that the DoA staff would also like those entries. I never meant for it to sound whichever weird way it was perceived by the rest of the people reading my comment. DX

 

I think this is absolutely the case with the likes. Mine was one of the first entries and has more likes than many of the much more impressive entries on later pages, so I think a lot of members who have likes early on maybe didn’t come back and look at later entries.

While likes did somewhat predict other contest winners, they weren’t totally accurate. They give an idea of popular favorites that may predict how people will vote, but lots of people who do vote don’t bother with likes and some people like things they didn’t vote for. And in a case like this where it’s only a small group voting, results could be very surprising! I showed my mom the entries and surprisingly, she wasn’t a fan of my favorite at all, but she loved one that wasn’t in my top five! It’s anybody’s chance!

Maybe you're right. I also voted for entries with lesser likes in these contests. Not taht they won (except one), but it indeed shows that tastes vary. So who knows?

I just feel a bit curious about the likes and the voting and so. I don't check the art thread itself anymore untill we know the winners. This is one way I deal with the suspense of who will win. I have two favourites and a third I found had an original backstory. I'm curious if one of them will end up winning?!

 

I understood what you mean, and though it makes sense, in a contest like this, the mod maybe be searching for something more that users arent and because of this the result differs. Since the votation have some obvious results because of the likes, I was expecting something a little different for this contest, dont know how it will end like though.

 

Ahhh I don’t want to say because I don’t want it to sound like I didn’t like that one!

But she didn’t like the vampire hunters because she’s a huge fan of Twilight and True Blood, which I thought was hilarious because I really like those entries. She admitted the art was good ‘but I can’t vote for one that would be a threat to Edward.’

 

@CloakedSchemer I like how your mom thinks! I think I would get along with her pretty wel, since I tend to think in similar ways when choosing stuff. Anything.

Although.. I like Buffy. So maybe we won't get along that well? Hmmm...

Maybe that's why I had a weak spot for those vampire hunters as well? I thought they were pretty neat.

Edit: also, talking about vampires and such. Was I the only one who thought the company pictures of VinDoll Charles made him look a bit like Angel (from Buffy).

Yes!! That's all I could see when I looked at him. That's actually one reason I chose to portray Udell, I couldn't get my head around Charles being anyone other than Angel.

 

Glad I wasn't the only one!! The wig, the clothes, the eyebrows... only thing off is that his nose is to big. Otherwise, striking image!

I had to stare at his headshot without his wig for some time, just to get the Angel-vibes out of my head

 

I actually thought Charles would make a good young Professor Xavier! That’s how I got inspired for my professor idea.

 

It is a huge relief to hear that! I was replying to your comment, so I at least hoped that my meaning wasn't completely warped in the wrong direction. I can over explain things and end up making them confusing instead of helpful, most of the time. DX

There were a lot of vampire-related entries, weren't there? (mine included, lol. I couldn't help it, as soon as I got a good look at Udell blank, I saw this lonely vampire character reading books in his library, waiting for someone to come into his decrepit home and breathe life into his undead existence)

 

I thought the exact same thing. The nose is too big but besides that, he'd be perfect for Angel
