Contest The It's So Basic Sock Extravaganza

Aug 1, 2018

    1. Not sure if this has been asked, but is fraycheck allowed?

      • x 1
    2. What a great theme for this year's sewing contest!:D I'm having so much fun working on this, and I hope everyone else is too. I can't wait to see all your entries...this is going to be so epic!!!:sumomo:Cheering you all on!

      • x 5
    3. Fray-check is allowed, but fray-check should not be used in place of actual sewing as this is a sewing contest. :) No gluing your outfits together instead of stitching them! :whee:

Fabric paint is allowed, as is dye.

@cowpewter and I are loving all the entries so far!

      • x 4
    4. I wish you had specified that acrylic crystals and such need to be sewn on to begin with. Now what I made is not eligible, even though the actual construction is completely hand sewn. I look at the official rules on the front page and assume that anything not specified there is ok; I only saw the "no glue rule" by accident this morning. In the future, PLEASE be more specific about what isn't allowed in the official rules post, so people like me don't end up having to just give up and drop out.

    5. aawww I'm so sorry this happened...
Do you think you could send a picture of your outfit to the Moderators and ask them if there is a way you could salvage it?

We still have a whole week to work on this, maybe you can still make it?

      • x 1
    6. @Audrina Mystique start a thread in Ask the Moderators so @cowpewter and I can go over it. We don't want to prevent anyone from entering with the no-glue; some of these considerations don't come up until a member raises a question and we discuss it.

    7. Time to put out this very important reminder to everyone:

Don't post your entry anywhere before the voting is completed. This means Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr, Flickr, etc. We don't want to have to disqualify anyone, but this rule doesn't bend. If it's posted elsewhere, you've broken anonymity and your entry will be ineligible.

Thanks and let's make this the most basically basic awesome sock contest ever!

    8. I finally went to the store and got my socks for the contest! Now I just gotta get to sewing after work tomorrow.

      • x 3
    9. What are the regulations for the photos? Like:How many photos do you need? What angles? Etc

      • x 1
    10. I want to try *O*

      • x 2
    11. I went through my sock hoard and came up with a fun design. Hopefully I can manage all the hand sewing in time! :whee:

Lol, I knew I'd have a use for all those "holey" socks one day :sweat

      • x 2
    12. Man! I can't believe I did this. I forgot to take a picture of the socks before I started sewing and I've been sewing for five hours already :sigh

    13. Hi there!, this seems super fun! I have a question, do we have to have a doll model our clothes? I wanted to make a 1/6 outfit but I only have a 1/4 on topic doll and a 1/6 off topic obitsu body I could possibly use if we needed the outfit to be modelled.

Thank you for doing this it seems awesome!

    14. My socks came today in the mail and the inhabitant of this fun challenge outfit staring at me and whispers repeatedly "don´t dare to do this to me"

      • x 2
    15. I am in the same dilemma. My whole outfit is hand-sewn but embellishments were glued on before this decision was made. :huh?:

    16. Socks acquired, one outfit piece made so far :D

      • x 2
    17. It is very disappointing. I might still enter as a "for fun" if they refuse to change it back. I understand the need to clarify rules, but inventing a new rule after the announcement is made seems a little unfair. Just saying "Everything must be sewn" to begin with would have prevented this problem. I made an enqiry on the Ask the Moderators forum: /threads/the-its-so-basic-sock-extravaganza-concern.781529/ if you wanted to add your own story.

    18. :pout: No interesting socks in the shops in my area. I'll have to use the boring ones.
I have decided on the doll I will model my outfit on, because of this,I had I funny conversation with my mom yesterday.
Me: Mom, how do You like my doll.
Mom: Oh it looks fantastic. The hair color matches jewelry so perfectly. I love the dress, too. Where did You get it?
Me: Oh, it is not a dress yet, just an uncut sock.

    19. Yes, super disappointing. Thank you for sharing that link! I am going to add my concern there, for sure. I hope they approve your entry!

    20. THERE ARE 6 DAYS LEFT AND I JUST SAW THIS YESTERDAY. And I'm moving. And I spent all night thinking up sock ideas. *cue internal screeching*

    21. First post has been updated, but after consulting our sock drawers for the sockiest of opinions on the matter, we bring you:

For this year's contest, embellishments may be glued or sewn. Seams must be hand or machine sewn.

So get those entries in! :D

      • x 2
    22. Here are the requirements in the entry form:

Front view of your doll wearing the outfit:

Back view of your doll wearing the outfit:

      Collage image showing detail closeups:

One photo of all materials (socks) used:

Style shot of your doll wearing the piece:

All pictures should be .jpg format and no longer than 600px on the longest side. Portrait or landscape orientation is fine, and the materials picture can be a collage. :D

The outfits do need to be modeled on an on-topic doll. Otherwise it's difficult to judge fit and the like. If you know someone who has an on-topic doll in the size you need, you can use their doll for the photos. It isn't required that you own the model doll, only that it be on-topic. :D

    23.

      Hi,

Starting to feel like a problem child lol.

Because of this rule: "2. Lace and ribbon are all right if they are attached to one of the socks that you are using. If your outfit seems to have a lot of this, you may want to take before and after pictures to prove that the lace is from a sock."

I understood that if we were using just basic socks without a lot of lace and ribbon, we didn't need to take before pictures of the sock? Should I include a picture of what is left of the socks? There isn't too much left :nowords:

I hope I can still enter! I appreciate your advice.

    24. Hi there,

Any restrictions on the style shot? For the others, I understand showing the outfit is paramount, but for the style shot, I was envisioning props, setting, complementary posing, etc.- sort of setting the scene for the outfit. I just wanted to make sure I'm approaching this right.

      Thanks!

    25. OH gosh, I have another clarification request. Is iron on interfacing for stability allowed? I looked through the whole thread and nobody has asked that yet??

    26. For the stylized photo, can it be a collage if we have undergarments as well?

    27. Go ahead and include it in your materials shot, please!

The outfit is what should always take center stage, rather than props, but I think you've got the right idea. Setting and posing are up to you and can definitely enhance your style shot. If you think something might be questionable, you can always drop a post in Ask the Moderators with the style shot you've made.

      • x 1
    28. Interfacing is fine!

Ideally the style shot should be a single picture showing the outfit, but if the undergarments can't be shown in that shot you may collage to show them as well.

      • x 1
    29. Very helpful thanks!

    30. For the one photo of all the socks used... can it be a collage? (Say I end up using more socks than planned, can my "one image" be a collage of two images showing the first socks and then the second set of socks?)

Edit: Also, can our doll wear bought shoes? OR only shoes/socks made of socks?

Lastly, the submission... we post it as a new thread in the Entries place? (And they'll all become visible when it's time to vote? How will things stay anonymous then?)

    31. Yes, a materials collage picture is fine to show all your socks.

Your doll can wear bought shoes; however, if you made socks for the outfit, you might not want to cover up your work so that those who will vote can see everything.

Yes, please post a new entry there. They are visible only to you and to the staff at this time. After all entries have been received, the mod team's tribe of ninja cockroaches :cockroach2:cockroach2:cockroach2:cockroach2 will scurry about and assign each entry a number, then create a voting thread. Not to worry, your anonymity will be safe with them. :bcake

    32. Ok I officially hate socks lol! Only one of the three items I've made has been successful, the other two had to be scrapped T_T the thickness and super stretchyness and limited amount of fabric is killing me :...(

      • x 2
    33. Don't give up!
      You can DO THIS !

      :cheer

      • x 2
    34. I will try to limp along to the finish line but I have very little left to work with T_T

      • x 4
    35. Ahaha, I have such an odd collection of socks for this (from my years of hoarding and throwing nothing away) and I think what's actually working best are the brand new socks I bought just for this.... Everything else is like too thick, or too worn in spots I want, or just not working well. Literally fishnet thigh highs are the only thing I already had that are decently working, and even then one is def in way better condition and more usable than the other (luckily, being thigh highs, there's a lot of material to pull from). I swear all my other thigh highs are just way too thick...

      • x 2
    36. I bought two packages of new socks for this based on the colors and prints but one is for little girls so not much fabric there to begin with and I've wasted a ton of it by trying to sew things how I would with normal knit fabrics but these socks are apparently considerably thicker :O unfortunately my regular socks are all like thick black socks so I can't use those lol.

    37. I got into my sock drawer and picked up anything I thought would be interesting... ended up using super old ones but it fits with my outfit theme ;) They are greyed out from too many machine wash and stained by shoes and boots. It's crazy what we can do with so little ! ^^

      • x 1
    38. I'm hoping to finish tomorrow as that's the last day I have available to work on it. I even have to redo the bottoms because I messed up. Ooops...

      • x 1
    39. Do those little shoe liner things count as socks?

    40. I'm so tired today and tomorrow is going to be super busy, I hope I can get something finished too because I squeezed in sock buying yesterday while schlepping my kid all over town, LOL.

    41. I believe if it has the foot part enclosed that it does, @DontShoottheDucks since nylons are OK, as are stockings. But I shouldn't answer as I'm not a mod :doh

    42. @IngieBee that's what i was thinking but i'll wait for a mod to be sure haha

      • x 1
    43. Like the Peds brand or similar, the no-show socklets for slip-on shoes? Yes, those are fine.

    44. I don't get the thing with the style shot XDD sorry if I am dump

I took piccs outside with my doll and the dress- She does not pose much, but it looks nicer with some green around than my messy room with the old carpetfloor and some cupboards...
So do I need another style shot? I think my other two piccs look nice enough XDD I can go ahead and post in Aks the mods...if my piccs are alright. I made a collage for the Close ups and Materials used. I stated (on the material pic) that there are socks in the piccs I did not use in the end but took them on the picc because I wanted to use them in the beginning..I have a pic from front and one from the back... well yes XD

    45. Was not expecting so much curling and unraveling of the sock :barf my back hurts from hemming all the time XDDD

Had to pretend I was a father to get the interesting sock patterns and colors from the kids sock section which unfortunately is also the underwear section so I dont look like a pervert

I more or less almost finished, but it does not look like what I envisioned or hoped it would look like lol

Had to redo the pants because Coconut grabbed it when I went to get a cola and started ripping it apart like Cinderellas stepsisters when they found out the rats made the dress using their stuffs

I dont see how sock dresses were looked down on because its so annoying than sewing normal fabric D:

    46. An outside picture is a great style shot! Basically it's a picture that is more posed or styled than a 'mannequin' shot just to show the outfit. More like how your doll might look if they were taking an Instagram picture to show off their fabulous outfit?

It's never dumb to ask a question. :)

      • x 1
    47. "Sure," my brain said, "this'll be fun," my brain said...

I hate everything and I remember why I quit making sock clothes. I'd forgotten how badly my sewing machine hates all stretchy fabric. Anyone that says line that **** with TP and the TP will easily pull off when you're done is lying. Also, DG all purpose thread breaks like no other (all my good stuff is lost in a box somewhere).

It was going so well too, until it wasn't. ...I may literally burn this when I'm done. XD

    48. Lol this challenge just reminds me how much of a shitty seamstress I am, but I tried T_T, I can't wait to see what the experts came up with *_*

    49. I seriously can't wait to see everybody's entries!
      This is exciting :D
I enjoy so much seeing how other people use their creativity and how much they will challenge themselves for those contests !
      =^.^=

    50. ... i just realised while taking my picture that this was my first sock dress ever. I´m in the hobby since 2012 XD My dolls got selfmade clothes since the first arrived or got a purchased

      • x 2
    51. I'm echoing this sentiment exactly!!! This is really what it's all about for me. Thank you Mods for such a fun and fascinating contest for this year's anniversary! I'm so excited to see everybody's fabulous sock outfits!:D

    52. So can I use the Show off picc as style picture. I really feel unsure about this xD
The picc would be great for insta too XDDD

    53. Yes, it should be fine!!

    54. thank you so much for your help =3
      that helped me a lot
      *hugs*

    55. Sewing machine doesn't work when the power is plugged into the wall but not the machine itself. Sewing machine doesn't work if the bobbin is threaded backwards. Sewing machine doesn't work when forwards if everything else internal unthreaded. Basically, sewing machine just doesn't want to work. Rethreading everything and praying we work this time.

    56. Man, I know I have no chance of winning and I feel sick, maybe I'll just give up :...(

    57. No chance of winning doesn't matter. I'm entering contests I have no chance of wining. It's all for the fun of it! :sumomo:You can do it!

      • x 3
    58. @Nefla It sounds cliche but it really isnt about winning, its about joining the ceremony with other hobby friends and taking part in a group activity, winning is just an added bonus :bcupcake

You can do it! Its better to try than to give up, and at least you will get some new skills and experience

      • x 4
    59. @Nefla - I agree with @GreenTeaSlug, it's really just about doing it and having fun. I'm like 99.9% sure I'm not going to win. And yeah, it would be cool to win, but at the end of the day, this is really just about challenging yourself, seeing what you can put together, and just having fun as a group.

    60. This is your Voice of the Staff reminding everyone that entries for the It's So Basic Sock Extravaganza will close at 11:59 EDT on August 17th, so you have almost exactly two more days. Please be sure to check what time that is in your time zone, we do not want anyone to miss out!

      Good luck and happy sewing!!
