Jun 24, 2010

    2. I was LOL-Jointed Doll. XD I mainly did this contest for the LOLs, and my work proves it:

This was such fun. ^^ I would go through all of the entries that blew me away, but it would take too long! Congratulations to all the winners for going the distance!

    3. vicent_nigthmare, is that LumeDoll Saiph wearing your wig? I didn't notice that the first time around. Love that boy.

    4. Maya Cecile, I like your room. It looks like something that would become animated in a BJD stop-motion film.

    5. @phanuel yes it is! one of the last Saiph that was sold :)

And thank you again you guys for liking my entries!! I'm quite pleased with my results even if I didn't win~

    7. All the entries everyone submitted are awesome! It is fun to see the ones that go to each person.

      I was WhosYourLlama ;)

I had a lot of fun and will make good use of all three stages of the contest. I made the tape dress removable, so I can reuse it later and the wig and set are things I can really use as well. Though I sculpt and sell dolls and create doll clothing for a living, this contest challenged me to use unusual materials and to think outside of the box to create things I never would have come up with without a little push in the right direction. What a great way to stretch those artistic muscles :)

Oh, and my wig material, of course, was feathers which were used in the large vase in my set.

      My entries were:

    8. Mistic- I adored your outfit! And the set was gorgeous! I waaaaant it! Great job!

    9. [IMG] Wow! Congratulations to all the fabulous winners! And to the runners-up. And to the rest of the entrants. Just coming up with 3 entries that met all the criteria for each prong of the contest, on time, under limit, was an incredible feat of skill in itself. Coming up with stuff that was GOOD, that went above-and-beyond-the-call. And this stuff was all incredible. Amazing work from everybody.

I didn't have enough free time to enter (or commit to it) this year, but next August might've had a better work-schedule & thus allowed me to enter as I would like... but, so much for that! I can't believe it was only 2 or 3 ungrateful, unsportsmanlike, hideously small-hearted people who managed to ruin a whole forum for 10,000 others. Very depressing.

But happily, now that voting is over, I can finally ask: Who was the one who made the wig out of audio tape? :D That must have been HELL to assemble! The final hairstyle came out great, somehow, despite being of such a bloodyminded material (tape loves to cling to itself, crease, curl the wrong way, rip when you breathe on it, etc.). That one got my vote, hands down.

    10. Well, unfortunately, I can believe it. I've seen competitions on other (non-doll) forums with no tangible prizes at all devolve into petty dung flinging. You go into these things hoping people will at least disguise their stupidity with silence. . . only to be severely disappointed every single time.

Yeah, so much for the fist shaking "wait 'til next year!" I got some useful things out of the competition, stuff I hope to embellish on. . . at some point. Hopefully with time and banishment of terminal laziness. :XD:

    11. I keep hoping that maybe sanity will prevail and over the year we might be able to sweet talk them in to doing it again... I for one have to say, this contest was more than just a bit of fun. As I told a few people, like oh so many right now I have been out of work, and after 10 years of working constantly, its a big ego hit to be laid off for so long. They made this available for even people on a super tight budget and still possible. (At one point I had 21.72$ to my name.. if that isn't incentive to come in under budget nothing is). Even before I saw the scores, I was able to lean back and go.... "Damn... I made that!"

Even when I was chasing my cat around with blue point all over her paws, the other cat that tried to stick itself to the tape... and the one that... I'm not kidding kept stealing the tape flowers off the dress and running off. In the end... I felt like I really accomplished something and that was a great feeling.

    12. Aw, I'm so glad you liked it! I was so happy with how it turned out, and it's a lot of fun to play with, since the bangs are all posable because the beads are strung on wire. :)

    13. Thank you so much! I was so worried that a minimalist setting would look like I didn't put much effort into it, but I really wanted to make a more "public" space for my dolls. I forgot to mention that IKEA catalog listings make perfect gallery cards since the furniture all has names in bold type followed by dimensions and stuff, so all of the cute/mutant animal illustrations are the work of...an IKEA mattress. ^__^ Should have taken some detail shots, but the thing was so big I had it dismantled and disposed of within ten minutes of shooting the photos. :( Keeping the bench though! My poor dead handbag lives on!

:D Seriously, who did that scarf?! That's like the worst novelty yarn nightmare ever! My jaw was on the floor.

So nice of you to mention the dress! I spent WAY more time getting him into that dress than I did on the other two challenges, and I think the most tape was used in getting that Super Gem body padded out so he had any hips and ass at all! It never even occurred to me that I could remove the adhesive and use the tape like paper. Derp!
The glowing pink thing is indeed an electric cotton candy sculpture. :fangirl:

Hee! I'm really glad my cats didn't take an interest in the tape couture. I guess I've teased them by sticking tape on them often enough that they stayed away!
I did feel really good to finish all three challenges, since I am so very good at leaving projects half finished. >_>

fransyung, I was so impressed by the scale of your set and that amazing woven floor! It is woven, right?

And vicent, your wig was my vote for favorite! I never thought a paper wig could be so moody and cool!

    14. Thank you... ^^ Woven? Not exactly... They were created from squares of magazine pages/brochures and old calendars. I cut them in 7cm x 7cm and then put them on top of each other to form a pattern. White, color, white, color... Like this :

Then I began interlacing more squares... moving outward, still holding on to the pattern. ^^ It took me 3 days to make the floor itself. My dolls are mostly SD sized (65-70 cm)... hence the size... >.< It takes half of my room.

    15. Wow!! They all line up so perfectly I thought they were long strips!

    16. Heheheh ^^ I couldn't make long strips because the ads magazines I got were small... >.<

    17. God, I so agree with this. There are so many things on various sets that I was like how did they do that? I am in such awe of all entrants.
I don't know how you didn't lose your sanity with that one. Pretty effing amazing. And thanks for writing your wig material. I noticed and recognised a few in the sets but most of them I had no clue, including yours.. lol I totally didn't notice the little coins on the net.
All I can say to that is OUCH! I can't sit on the floor for more than an hour before I'm in major pain.
I love crime tv.. Your banana pic was my favourite too. I love the whole idea of him being the 'bad guy'. ;)
Bahahaha.. you are a bad girl but I don't blame you one bit. Given the opportunity, I'd probably do the same thing.
Don't kick yourself. It was a wicked awesome set. I squeed when I saw it and gasped "OMG! It's an Escher print!". Very clever and impressive.
Bahahaha.. that sounds like a comedy of errors. Animals are awesome for that and I got a good laugh out of your post here.

I have to say I my favourite set was vicent_nigthmare's. It was so unexpected and right up my alley. You did an amazing job on it. The museum/gallery was also fun. I really loved the look of it, minimalist or not, it looked real. Speaking of real, Sennenrin your back alley was really realistic to me too. I hope you haven't ripped that set apart. And NY_Kitty.. your Puki murder scene was so much fun and appealed to the crime show fangirl in me. And the library, armeleia that was great! I'm a bookworm so my crew would love your set so much. And all the little details you put in there. Just wonderful.

I don't even know how to say how much I really enjoyed all three parts to this contest. The wigs were just so much fun seeing all the different materials people came up with and the sets, I don't think there are many I wouldn't want for myself. I just wish I had a place big enough for something like that. Tape couture.. you outdid yourselves. I do love that people are posting colour pics of them. I actually like them better and feel they give more detail to the outfits. If I had even the amount of talent one of you has in your little pinky, I'd be in heaven.

Again, congrats to you all, winners or not. You're all winners in my book.

      LM

    18. Oh, and also kudos for @Sour_Dotz, codename Gephy, for that AWESOME candy wig. I really really really loved it. And it has been driving me mad since then, how the hell did you put that off afterwards?

Aaaaaaand @Sint, codename Resinparrot! Your eyes wig was my favourite! It was a pity it couldn't be voted, because I just love it!

    19. I will unlurk to reveal who I am:

      Okapi

I really enjoyed this contest. There were so many beautiful entries. I am amazed by the talent here on DoA. :aheartbea

    20. DuckHerd.... I'm demanding a tutorial for that paper-towel wig.... Its AMAZING!!! Absolutely brilliant!!!!

    21. Just want to say how inspiring and beautiful all the entries were! My gossshhh!!! Looking through these really makes me want to try the triathlon events out RIGHT NOW, haha! I would love to try and create a dollroom...! Thanks everyone for posting so much lovely stuff, and so much lovely EXTRA stuff documenting how you made all your pieces! It's fascinating! :D

    22. whitewings Thanks! I think I hurt my wrists and thumbs from twisting so much paper. @_@
I'll find some time and make a partial paper towel wig for a tutorial.

    23. Hello! Just wanted to let you all know, if your scissors got really gummy after the masking tape challenge, it's easy to get off using eucalyptus oil. :)

Is anyone going to try to make their masking tape creations in cloth? If you do, I'd love to see them!

(And I was GlassFingers. So called because I threaded too many glass beads in my wig, and some got stuck in the ridges of my fingers... :) )

    24. I didn't enter this year, I have a million family birthdays in August, but I was impressed with the level of commitment to detail everyone went into and I enjoyed seeing all the entries. I think my favourite challenge was the last one, but I do like in-scale things and that really appealed to me. I'd definitely love to see some tutorials off the back of this challenge in particular.

Well done to all who participated, it's a shame a few unsportsmanlike members have put us off hosting something similar next year. There definitely comes a point when the drama over results outweighs the fun at putting something like this together.

    25. I love seeing everyone's entries side by side! :D There were so many fantastic things made for this contest :aheartbea:aheartbea
      I'm so nervous about posting this... :shudder but these were mine~ ;o;

    26. ichigo-pan43 I LOVE your tape outfit!!! :D
One of my favourites without doubt! It looks like a real one! Very well done <33

    27. Thanks. I really just wanted an excuse to make that hat. I need to recreate it out of fabric somehow now!

And while I didn't make a set, I'm inspired to make mine someday seeing how much can be made with only $20 and a bag of recyclables.

    28. Here's my "collage" As most of you know - I was out of the contest by round three because my entry was late... but Armeleia was gracious enough to add me in at the last minute just for the fun of it... I'm kinda proud that I managed it on under $20!!

seriously guys... (my fellow competitors)... we ROCK!!! LOL

    29.
    30. I love the minimalist look myself. Spare, cool, elegant -- oh yes!!! It's too bad many people think that equals "no effort" and "nothing special", so I'm really happy you got some recognition for it!

    31. Candy kitten- I loved your set! It made me squee so loudly what an adorable set!

    32. Wow - I'm insanely impressed with all the entries. Everyone did so well and congrats to all the winners. Because of medical treatments and icky sickies I didn't even try to participate this year and I'm sad to hear that there might not be one next year. :(

St. James and Sims - your dresses floored me!!! I'm so amazed by the work you put into them.

Armeleia and misticunicorn - I loved both of your wigs! They were beautiful! Armeleia - this is probably a dumb question but what mold is the doll in your wig picture? I adore her.

    33. Ok, here are mine. Didn't get to the set sadly. Life got in the way.
      My wig:

Crayola craft foam. Warning this stuff stains like a mofo:|
      My tape dress:

I wish we could have posted to colour photos. I kinda like it best.

All of you did a phenomenal job. I'm awestruck! I had such a blast doing this and hope we can again, even if it's just for fun-no prizes needed!

    34. wow such grat entrys :D and batman won (lol) nanananannana batmaaan xD <3 gratulations to all winners :D

    35. thankyou Sims! i have to say your tape dress was just stunning....it was funny because i said to my hubby wouldn't it be great if i could do a mary queen of scots dress but then decided it would be so far out of my league...then voila! up it pops on the page...just outstanding work

    36. Here are mine:
I didnt really get to finish my wig. I was going to style it like the witch in tin man with the pig tails coming out the buns and do a bunch of stuff to make it all lighteningy looking. I don't have a shirt for my doll either.. I know, bad me v_v.
Aaand here is my dress. That too I didn't get to finish. I did another skirt but it fell apart so I had to start over and make sure the waves were really pressed down at the top. I wanted to make it full length and do a bunch of tiny roses across the bodice and around her back over to her shoulder as a strap. The top looks like it doesn't fit perfectly because I had to holder her by her hands which pulled up her chest (hence the weird pose).

    37. firefly5003 i thought your dress was beautiful...it was one of my faves

    38. firefly5003, your dress is gorgeous.

Who did the outfit #117? I loved that one.

    39. Mystic Unicorn yours was one of my favorites!
      And that wig is gorgeous!
      ...
      I want it. XD
      You did so well!

      Aww, I liked Frans too!
It did have a great deal of detail!
I'm glad that everyone tried to hard.

      Sheesh, some
of you should take commissions for
those tap dresses and craft wigs! lol

    40. that seems insanely unfair, if batman won the contest why didnt they get the doll.

    41. :fangirl: Yeah! That's the one! So cool. And your girl is a good model for it.

Chibi Tomb Raider also cracks me up. XD Well done!

    42. Sorry, the link doesn't work for me, it's too late?

My entries (the set it's very crappy, but it's my very first set and I didn't have time to work on it :sweat)

    43. Araignette & firefly5003 : I LOVED those outfits :O SO awesome!!

    44. Danke. She started lookin a bit chubby whith all the layers on tho. I guess that's why she pinched me as I was lacin her up.

    45. Araignette, your wig is a real eyecatcher-- sorry to hear the stuff stains. Candy kitten, your wig looks so difficult and the results are great. ReyArkady9, I think your set is very cute-- loved the red walls with the black& white floor. I could just rave about everybody's! Mistic, may I ask how you made the tree and chair? Just beautiful.

    46. Oooh! That was me! It was very sticky and hurt my fingers. I was REALLY glad when I was done!!

    47. These were my two entries, I ran out of time to do the 3rd because my college classes started :( My wig was easter grass and my tape was well... lol i had more time sticking her to the wall for photos than anything XD it will be a few more years before I can compete with the rest of you.. maybe doas 10th anniverssary... lol
      [IMG]

    48. Well, just the concept of knitting with masking tape blew me away. And I loved the whole outfit to boot. You got my vote.

    49. First, getting some admin stuff out of the way...

We made some little image badges for all participants. :) Feel free to put them in your sig (just as long as you don't go over the sig size limit by doing so) or post it wherever you feel like posting it. Even if you only did the first event, be proud of your accomplishment!

(Please upload these to your own webspace rather than hotlinking our images.)

You're all amazingly creative and full of endless potential if you push yourselves. I hope you all realize that! I'm pretty sure that none of you had ever thought you could make a wig out of something completely weird, craft clothing out of masking tape, or build a photo stage for your doll for under $20. Heck, you may not have thought you could build a photo stage for under $100. Or, you know, at all.

Everyone who completed all three trials did an awesome job. Congratulations on your skill and endurance! I hope you leave the event with more good memories than hot glue burns. (I unfortunately have more glue burns on account of making all of those bookshelves.)

There's your pep talk, rah rah rah. Now go build some cool shit and see what else you can do. ;)

(Aaaaaaaand then the rest of the post is just replying to the rest of the thread that I couldn't reply to before.)

She is Lacey, my Everpurple Iris. :) I had been having some bonding issues with her and she was in danger of being rehomed... but working with her on this contest (and changing her into some paler eyes) made me totally fall in love with her. She's not going anywhere now!

It's not too late... let me check the link and make sure it's right. For now, you should be able to access it here:
      http://www.denofangels.com/forums/misc.php?do=form&fid=29

Violent Violet, I really loved your tape ensemble. It was one of the ones I voted for because it was really unique and wonderfully fantasy. I love that kind of stuff. Your set also makes me laugh because I swear I've been in that goth apartment, probably on a bad date. ;)

Shashan, Your wig was very elegant. I do hope you'll use it for other shoots. You should have done a tape kimono to keep your theme consistent throughout!

Audiencekiller, I loved the ruff on your tape dress. VERY impressive and a great look overall.

NY_Kitty, your samarai cracked me up... as did your breakdancing puki!

darthmermer, I liked your entries throughout! All were very unique, though I'm not sure I could have traced a style through them. The candy wig was my favorite of your entries. I thought you did an awesome job getting the look of cotton candy without actually having to use it and get your dolls all sticky.

karla-chan, I was really impressed with your futon. I voted for it for best furniture. :D It's awesome because it's totally adaptable. You can just make new blankets or cushions and have a totally different look. :)

Keladry, I adored your kindergarten. :aheartbea The concept was wonderful and the details were great! I especially loved the little handprints along the bottom edge. Were those stickers, stamps, or did you paint them individually? At any rate, the scale is perfect!

St.James, I loved all of your entries and voted for most of them. :D Your art gallery was AWESOME. I especially liked the way you had your dolls posed to look at the art. In some shots they were pretentious as hell. Loved it. The high art snootiness theme is there in all of your pics! (Also, did not realize your tape model was a dude. Though now that I look, I recognise who he is.)

Vince_Twilight, I'm bummed you didn't make it to the last round! I think you were improving as you went; your second design is much more elegant than your first... and I'm sure a set would have been above and beyond. You should try making one sometime just for the hell of it to see what you come up with!

Vampireanneke, your pimp suit was great. The ruffled/fur collar was pretty awesome.

Sennenrin, your suit was one of my favorites. The details were spiffing and the dit was really rather astonishing considering it was tape!

Piyoko - I love the details in your dress! You're another person who should have done the set because you were just getting better as you went!

vicent_nihgtmare, I really enjoyed your set. I would love to take pics of one of my dolls in it! I also liked your wig a lot... though particularly with that specific doll. I have a total weakness for blushed noses and the way your photographed him in the paper wig was stunning.

Maya Cecile, your set was freaking adorable. The concept (and your doll, geez) were adorable. It reminded me of making forts out of boxes when I was little.

MisticUnicorn - your wig was one of my favorites. It's fantastic. The colors of the feathers are great, but they are made even more amazing by the pale pink flowers. It has a great feeling of balance. (Your outfit reminds me a bit of your profile pic.)

duckherd, I LOVE your wig. I love how ethereal and spooky it looks on your doll, too. The presentation is amazing. Your set was also one of the ones I wanted. It is SO COOL and incredibly elegant.

ichigo-pan43, your wig was one of my favorites, got my vote! You could totally take commissions. The styling was wonderful. Your tape couture was also wonderfully detailed, but still very elegant.

whitewings, the tape feather boa was fabulous. I also loved your room. I would have totally been into that room when I was 6 or 8! (The striped walls are something I would still want in my house as an adult...)

Candykitten, strong entries throughout... but I loved you Tomb Raider tiny the best. The details were awesome and the doll was so cute. The lighting in your shots was also incredibly clever.

Araignette, I really appreciated the detail of your tape dress. I loved how there were so many pieces that were all unique and removable.

Firefly5003, I loved your dress. I was a heartbroken that it couldn't be included for voting because the amount of detail was just completely stunning. I see the same level of meticulous detail in the perfectly even tucks and rubbles that I see in your sculpting (and in your intricate mother molds, geez). You did amazing work, I would have loved to have seen a set from you.

Fransyung, I already commented on your stuff, but I also need to add, wow, I had no idea that was how you made your floor. That makes it even more impressive! I had thought it was a unique wrapping paper or something. Wow.

Rey Arkady9, I liked the straight front and the details in the bodice of your tape dress. You have an eye for those lines, do you sew?

    50. So I can post a pic om my couch I was going to make for the stage set...guys want to see it?

    51. oooh let me answer that one......

Aparently some people needed to complain about the rules after getting their butts whooped in the contest by an admin.... who won after being voted for anonymously by the community. Those who didn't compete but DID complain.... well they are just intent on peeing in the pool when everyone is having a good time. children :|

Armeleia rose above the pettyness and offered up her prize to second place - because she's a rockin good person and bacuae she wouldnt be able to enjoy her prize with all the crap aimed at her FAIR AND SQUARE win....

Anyways..... The other entries were seriously amazing!!! Some of the outfits had my jaw on the floor... and the sets... well Darthmermer knows I think she's a freak *loves you*

    52. Hey guys here is something fun, Sennenrin is actually a real life friend, and after our photos were done and submitted I snapped off a photo of the dapper couple when they were returned. Both dolls were kindly lent out from my roomate for us to abscond with for a week and hang from office furniture.

and also, while cleaning out my camera I found this photographic GEM please note the stack of masking tape half clinging off of the tv tray and the dignified noose. Also the case of dnd books.... could I get any cooler? (insert geeky snort)

    53. That outfit still has me *_*

      Wow.... just WOW

    54. Hehe thank you. I knew it was going to be epicly big... or an epic disaster. I took photos along the way because I was convinced at any time it was going to collapse. I wish I had taken photos of her in the beginning because in order to get the dress to do what I wanted.. I did actually end up having to make a masking tape pannier by making super thick sheets of tape and cutting them to make the under skirt.

Missing are the photos of my wig where during the middle curing time on the apoxie, It was draped over plastic containers on four tv trays, to actually hold the snake shape. Or the fall out pattern of the ends of all the popsicle sticks that were in an arching pattern all the way around my art table.

Also vince I would love to see the sofa! I can' figure out for the life of me how to make furniture so it turns out... perhaps.. a tutorial. *makes big eyes*

    55. Yay! More pictures! I love seeing all of the work in progress stuff. I should have taken some...>.> Then you could have seen Martine's masking tape drag race padding.

Oh, I forgot to mention that I HAD to vote for the bean bag/wood paneled set as most realistic set because I'm pretty sure I passed out on the bean bag in a friend's room just like that more than once in college. Thank god that was a long time ago!! :doh

    56. OH the bean bag/wood one got my vote... that was sooo realistic for me it was the wall hanging. I swear to god that WAS my basement in one of the houses I lived in. All it was missing was the "spool" for a coffee table. That was brilliant.

    57. To all the winners and to everyone who competed, wow, just wow! I'm enjoying finding out everyone's true identities! I feel like I could go on and on about everyone's entries. The tape challenge in particular just blew me away. Interestingly, my daughter, whose feeling about my dolls has progressed from something close to hatred and disgust to a "don't ask don't tell" tolerance actually became interested in the tape challenge. (She is studying costume design.) She even kept asking when the entries would be posted and then, the night they were, actually postponed leaving to meet friends for dinner long enough to look at them. Sims, yours was her favorite, so take that as high praise indeed!

    58. You know, if we have teams next year, I'm totally snagging all of you guys!
      lol.

    59. Aside from the obvious period inaccuracies, they look great together. :) Maybe I should have made him a doublet so they could match. I still could, I suppose, since there's so much tape still lying around, but I need a break from all the sticky.
