I decided try to to participate this year! I'm excited since it will be my first year! I cannot pass up a volks fcs or Colin he's so cute.... I have three jobs though so I will try my best! I always love looking at these threads!

Gah, I am so unlucky this year! I just signed up for a proper full time job (40hours a week) and I start this week! I am still going to try and compete though, I adore the Anniversary challenges!

The premise this year made me all misty eyed. I'm really excited to see who everybody's favorite most special doll is. Maybe at the end after the last round closes everybody can talk about some of the things they've been through with their dolls and what makes them the most special to each person?

 

That would be awesome ! I've always wanted to participate in one of the anniversary contests but never got around to it. If I'm able to this time I definitely, definitely will. Mainly because of the theme! I do have a very, very special will-never-ever-sell-this-doll doll (well, you know, unless emergency but then as soon as I had the funds I'd get her back ASAP) and I'd love to try challenges with her

 

What does it mean "recast owners may participate for fun"? Does it mean that photographs of a counterfeit doll will be posted on the pages on DoA next to the photos of legitimate doll? I find this extremely thoughtless and disrespectful towards the law abiding doll DoA members, as well as the doll artists. Unless this encouragement for counterfeit dolls to enter the DoA contests is removed, I find it impossible for myself to participate in any of them.

 

It says recast supporters, not owners. I think this just means that they can participate for fun with their legit dolls even if they think recasts are ok. Recasts are still banned from DoA and are not allowed in pics etc. So I don't think they would allow people to use them in the contests, even just for fun.

 

It clearly states if you SUPPORT recasting you are can only join for fun.

 

DoA is not a thought police. There is no way, and shouldn't be any way to read people's minds to establish who supports what, it's between a person and their conscience. However, currently the rule may be interpreted in such a way that a counterfeit doll can be presented in the DoA contest. Until I know 100% otherwise, I will not feel comfortable placing any of my dolls in a situation where they can share a page with fakes.

 

Pretty sure it means just be honest. It's the same way people should be honest about not sharing their entries outside DoA and secretly asking people to vote for them.

 

Doesn't it just mean that a recast supporter isn't eligible to play for a prize? I'm sure they would have to enter with a legit doll, I trust DoA wouldn't allow recasts to be posted under any circumstances

 

Recasts aren't allowed on DoA as a general overarching rule, so I find it hard to imagine they'd be allowed in any picture on DoA even as part of a contest. I suspect the mods didn't think they needed to specify that - but maybe they should consider doing so just for clarity's sake.

By the same token, if they don't know a person is a recast supporter they clearly can't enforce that rule, but there are some quite vocal supporters about. I'd have added that same rule to TRY to avoid a situation wherein someone who falls into that category could legitimately win the prize, then take their nice new legit doll and have it recast. The mods are limited in what they can do on this front, but I think it's nice to say "sure, you can play for the sake of playing but that's all."


I do have one question, though, with request for moderator input. For some of us who have been around since dirt (I think I've only been around since mulch, but you get the idea) our oldest, most beloved dolls are pretty much instantly recognizable as belonging to us. Will using them create a problem in terms of "soliciting votes"? It's kind of a stretch to be concerned about this, I know; but I'd just like to be sure before I enter the fray. Especially since I actually have time to do so this year.

 

Isn't it a little unreasonable to expect honesty from someone openly supporting dishonest treatment of the very people who are the reason our hobby exists, namely, the dollmakers?

 

The mods don't need to say specifically that recasts can't be posted in the contests. It's already against the DoA rules to post images of recasts, links to recasts or even references to owning recasts in your signature or profile. Doing so earns the poster an insta-ban, period.

There are known open "recast supporters" on DoA who use the same username and etc on other sites and don't try to hide their identity and the fact that they support bootlegging. However as long as they follow the DoA rules about not posting these things here they are permitted to stay. This is because they are not technically breaking any rules and DoA admin does not feel it is her place to try and punish people for things done off of DoA. The contest rule is a direct note to these folks that they will not be allowed to claim prizes if they participate. That's all.

 

I see how it can be read this way. I also see how it can be read as a permission to enter a counterfeit doll in the contest.

 

Posting a photo of a counterfeit doll on Den of Angels is always grounds for banning from the forum. The only exception to this is when that doll is posted in Ask the Moderators by a member who is trying to determine, with help from forum staff, if a doll that they have purchased might be counterfeit. (This is something that comes up in situations when members unknowingly buy recasts, usually members who are new to the hobby, and often on eBay.) So to alleviate your concerns, no, the rule does not mean that members will be permitted to post photos of recast dolls in the contests. Any members who are found to have done this will be disciplined accordingly.

 

I'd like to know the answer to this question as well.
There are quite a few "favorite" dolls that I would instantly recognize.

 

This was discussed in an earlier competition here. The upshot is that you won't get in trouble for soliciting votes just by using a doll that people recognise as being yours, so long as you're not posting any images/info about what you're doing for the competition that would let people figure out which entry is yours. I imagine it would be the same for this contest too.

This makes sense to me, cos it's not fair that if someone owns an awesome popular doll that they be unable to enter just because people would recognise their doll. The mods are already going to great lengths to make sure this isn't a popularity contest, which is great, but there's not much they can do about that. And hopefully voters will only vote on whatever the criteria they are asked to vote on, not on whether they happen to like the owner of one of the dolls, if they know who it is.

 

Thanks, vampy, I hadn't seen that one. Obviously I'd seen the thread (just noticed my own post in it... O_o) but hadn't seen the response just above mine. Or if I did... well, it's just old age, what can I say This makes me feel better!

 

Actually there isn't any way to interpret this rule as recasts being allowed to enter unless you're really stretching which you kind of seem to be. Recast dolls have always been VERY publicly again DoA rules. I also think it's a little silly to think that the moderators are in no way aware of members who are active parts and supporters of the recast community. Let's be honest, there are members of this forum who probably run frothing at the mouth to the mods the minute they know another DoA member has so much as looked at a recast.

Yes, realistically there probably are people who will enter despite supporting recasts because they will feel they are unknown enough to slide through, and some of them may even be right. But it is also a heads up to those who will despite being known for supporting recasts so that they can't claim they didn't know because well... it's right there.

DoA doesn't support recasts, never has, and never will. But they're also being realistic in the fact that they know that there are unfortunately forum members who do. And while they do not want to pass along prizes of legit dolls donated from companies that are affected by recasts to people who don't support the original artists, they do also seem to want to encourage as many people as possible to just join in and have fun and be a part of the community. I think you should probably be more worried about that then whose photos are being posted.

Personally I am really excited and looking forward to entering this year. I have zero faith I'll actually win anything, but I think it's going to be crazy and fun, and a chance to do something with the dolls I have left after my big purge this year. And it works out perfectly since you're supposed to pick your favourite doll. The only ones we have left after all are dolls that we really loved and couldn't part with. So my biggest problem will be choosing. XD

I am so thrilled to see excitement about the theme! I think we came up with a good one this year and you'll have a great time! I love the idea of sharing some stories about the favorite dolls you picked, let's do that in September!
As for whether or not your doll is identifiable, there are multiple points for voters to assign in each round and they must be given to different entries. Anyone who votes for the same entry in more than one criteria question will have all of their votes tossed out, so there's no easy way to stack the deck for a familiar doll.

 

I'm so happy, I was worried I might not be able to enter because the doll I've bonded with the most and had the longest is currently a floating head (I wanted to treat him to a nicer body but it hasn't happened quite yet) but a friend of mine has been very gracious and kind and is lending me a body for him for the contest! Can't wait to get the first challenge tomorrow!

I do have a question though - how are we submitting our photos for the contests? Normally when I post pictures in threads here, I am getting them from my flickr, but then people might see the contest pictures on my flickr and know which entry is mine. Are we just sending the image files, or are we expected to upload them somewhere we usually don't?

I don't know about on flickr but on photobucket you can set Albums to private that's what I've done in the past till the contest is done. So see if you can make pictures private on Flickr.

This will be my third time entering the triathlon, and though I am a bit worried about having the time with having a job now, I can't pass this up! Last year was killer, though ^^;

 

I'm so excited about this. I'm determined to try this year. I couldn't do it last year since I was moving but I'll do my best this time! I've been practicing sewing, looking forward to this event of the year. Fighting everyone!

 

I'm hoping to try, even though my sewing skills are not very good. Practice can only help me get better!

I was wondering about the prizes; does the first place winner get first choice, like if they'd rather win the Pola doll they can choose it, or does each place winner get designated their specific prize? If the latter, what if two of the winners mutually agree that they'd rather have each other's prize? Well, I'll consider myself successful if I even manage to get past the first trial on time, haha, but I am curious XD .

I'm kind of curious about that was well cause I'm absolutly in love with that Iplehouse JID Colin and not that I'm going to win first place but I'd much rather have the Iplehouse doll then the first place doll. If I don't win Iplehouse COlin might just be getting added to my wishlist. I'm in love

 

Guess it's sort of like Skee-Ball-- one's luck and skill must be juuuust right. I will get to brainstorming & see if I even have a remote half-chance for ANY of those.

(I have a JID Colin at home... he is a sweet & joyful thing to have around the house. So cute. How wonderful of Iplehouse to offer such a prize!)
