June 19, 2016 So... Long story here haha When I first got into BJD I saw a Dollmore Narsha on ebay. It was like, I just had to have her. I bought her without really researching at all, I was so in love. Turned out she was kinda old and yellowed because she was french resin. I loved her though. Sadly a few years later I needed money badly and I sold her. Once I bought a normal resin Narsha but she wasn't the same. I meant to get a french resin Narsha again but they were sold out. Fast forward, those smart dolls by Danny Choo (I think) are so so so cool. I looked into getting one but they are A- pretty big B- pretty expensive and C- not on topic/not resin... so... I don't want that. Decided... You know what, I'll make one for myself! I started looking for cheaper dolls to do this with... nothing was jumping out at me. Then I thought, why not a Narsha again. Well, I looked on the DOA marketplace and everything was crazy expensive. On a whim I checked out Ebay... and what happened to pop up but a Narsha up for bid at $25! Well I bid up to $100 on her and finally won her for $75!!! It was fate! She is actually a he (it's the male body but the only difference is a penis instead of a vulva). She is also really yellowed... but I feel like with a lot of love I can get her cleaned up and do something amazing with her. I've always loved Chobits so what better way to do this than make a Persocom! I of course can't make her walking, talking, computing... but why not do a few mods to her to make it seem like she can... I'm actually really interested in this! I loved Chobits too (I got into bjd's from CLAMPS own Angelic Layer) and I even made persecom headphone ears a long time ago that I still have. Please update this when you finally start the modifications!
Seems like a cool idea! Though it seems a little strange a Narsha would start at a $25 bid... That seems really low imo.
Thanks everyone. I'll definitely keep it updated. I'm on vacation right now but will be home Wednesday... and have this weekend off which means crafty time!
At the same time, french resin would be a very interesting choice for a recast xD I got my tan Narsha for under $100, I guess as a start bid for me that doesn't sound too crazy. Also hi, I've been lurking xD This looks very interesting c:
Ah yeah, no I SERIOUSLY doubt she's a recast. She's just very yellowed and it was an emergency sell. I'm sure she had a reserve to meet if no one bid. And as far as I know, Narsha isn't available as a recast. She's only about $200 new so, yeah, didn't sound unreasonable.
Yeah ^ u ^ I've never seen a Narsha recast, I'm not sure if they are popular/expensive enough? Most recasts are soom, fairyland and iplehouse from what I've seen xD
Thank you for clearing that up @Calabri and @Call Me Stephanie. I was very confused how she would cost so little. Emergency sale and low new price makes sense now.
Terrible picture but she's here! She needs a lot of work but I love her too much to mind. I can't wait to get started. Going to wipe her clean tomorrow and maybe start her soak. Too tired tonight though. Been up since 2am flying back home with my two young kids... that wasn't fun haha. She's smaller than I remembered. May have to change some plans a little. But we'll see. I"m buying some computer parts now and once they get here I'll be able to play around and plan better. She's going to be my little steam punk dollie... for my steam punk character to plug into her devices... and if all goes to plan, I'll be able to make her "talk" with a wireless blue tooth speaker. We'll see though.
this sounds like a really cool project. i'll be following with interest. it's great that you found an old doll cheap enough to be able to mod
Yup, it was truly fate that I found her. I wanted a cheap doll to mod but I also wanted something I actually liked. I love Narsha and french resin and I think it'll make an interesting look to have her french resin against apoxy... like flesh and machinery... I ordered the electronics to put inside her. I ordered a few things so I can try them inside her and decide from there. Ordered a mini bluetooth speaker, a mini power bank (use her to charge my phone or tablet, what?!) and a USB hub. I think I'll only be able to fit two but it'd be awesome if I can fit all three. She's going to lose some posibility I think but I'm ok with that. Today I'm going to take some GOOD before pictures, then take her apart and wipe her clean, and soak her in a whitening solution. I'll take lots of pictures. ^_^
Managed to get some free time today. I wiped her (which took more elbow grease than I anticipated!) and let her soak in the peroxide/ baking soda mix. I'm not sure if it made much difference but it was worth a try. Her flickr album is here: Felicity Before picture, the difference between her body blushing and her head cap Head cap difference by Stephanie Guillory, on Flickr Before blushing Sunlight picture by Stephanie Guillory, on Flickr After Wiping After being wiped by Stephanie Guillory, on Flickr Uneven Staining Uneven Staining by Stephanie Guillory, on Flickr Peroxide and Baking Soda Bath Peroxide and baking soda soak by Stephanie Guillory, on Flickr After, all clean! After the soak. Hard to tell but I think there's a slight difference. by Stephanie Guillory, on Flickr She's still in pieces on my craft table. I stopped by the comic book store for Apoxie but they didn't have any (thought they would for war hammer/machine. They were out of "green stuff"). I'll have to go to Micheals or Hobby Lobby. I need a dremel anyway. Going to chop off her little penis. Haven't decided if I'll make her a vulva. Probably not. No need IMO, she's a robot so no need for reproductive parts. I'll have to get sand paper and sculpey to make her ears too.
I have actually but thank you for linking to me. I am a bit nervous to use RIT... I haven't had the best luck before haha Plus she's french resin, I'm not sure how that would react to dye. I don't mind her yellowed to be honest. It doesn't look as bad in person. Just gotta be careful when taking pictures.
I've seen somewhere that there's a different dye that does better for resin--I think it's called iDye Poly? Saw some decent results with it, and it seems to hold up better that RIT.
I am not sure I want to experiment on the french resin with dye. I like her color anyway. But we'll see. Might consider it later. So project update.... Been buying a few gadgets to add to her because I'm really bad at visualizing sizes so I just bought stuff to piece together and make it up as I go haha. Project Parts by Stephanie Guillory, on Flickr Some of the parts I got so far. Project Parts by Stephanie Guillory, on Flickr USB hub was too big with the case. Thinking it'll work without it then it'd fit better. It'll be inside her so it'll be protected. And I could glue it in place. Project Parts by Stephanie Guillory, on Flickr Power bank I bought, clearly too big haha Ordered another, hopefully it's smaller. Project Parts by Stephanie Guillory, on Flickr USB cable that lights up! Project Parts by Stephanie Guillory, on Flickr Eyes. Thinking she'll use the pupil ones but when she's "activated" she'll use the pupilless ones.
This is looking to be interesting so far. Have you seen the LED lights that are available for the eyes? I've seen a doll before (I think in the WOW modifications thread) that had eyes that lit up--and I think that it would be pretty cool for your 'activated' persocom.
Thanks! I'm done with school 8/8 so I shall hopefully have more time then. Friday I"m going to the craft store so I'll look into apoxie and a dremal (sp?) then. I need to do some research on them... I don't know the first thing about them...
@Call Me Stephanie You might want to check Home Depot for a dremel, since it is more of a construction-type tool. Home Depot online has them, so they'll probably be in-store as well.
You may also want to look on youtube for directions or Home Depot or craft store for and instruction book. I know I had one once. You will need to use slow speed so the resin doesn't melt. If you've never used a dremel, you will need some practice pieces.
I agree with @nancy_schroeder_ca. Definitely get some practice things to drill on first. I've used a dremel in jewelry class and if you drill to fast, you can get blow-outs. This can happen on things like glass and rocks, so it probably can occur with resin, too. It happens when you're drilling, and as the drill exits the material too fast, it blasts out an area of material, kind of like a bullet hole in a glass window. This is just from my limited experience with a dremel on a drill press set-up, but just be wary until you know how fast the bit will go through the resin. Slow and steady wins the race haha.
Hand tools are slower but safer. You might want to consider them. Micro-Mark has a good selection of tools for miniature or small scale work. www.micromark.com
Oh wow... that sounds scary... yeah I'll look around and try to go super slow haha. I don't have practice pieces, I guess I could look in the marketplace for something.
I can't wait to see the finished product, I love doing and seeing other people do projects like this.
Thanks! I went to Micheals yesterday with no luck on Apoxie... and no luck at Walmart for a dremel. To the internet! >_< More waiting for supplies.
Aves Apoxie Sculpt is not sold at Michael's. I'm pretty sure it's only available online. That's how I got mine. And a hardware store would have a dremel but probably not Walmart. HomeDepot.com has them: Search Results for dremel at The Home Depot
I found both pretty cheap on Amazon. Just waiting for shipment. The power bank I was waiting on came but it's too big. I may try to pull it apart too and see but I dunno... probably not a good idea. I'm no expert though lol
Oh nice! Yah it seemed like (cheap) dremels were around $25, and I remember Aves Apoxie was something like $20. Not sure if you're aware, but Aves Apoxie is a greyish color when cured. You may be able to add pigment to change it, but painting/blushing it to match might be a safer bet. As for the power bank, perhaps return the too-big one and look for a smaller one?
Yeah I got a dremel set for about that and the white apoxie for like $15. The power bank was one I got from China through Ebay so I doubt there's a way to return it and even so it wouldn't be worth the price of shipping. Can't have to many power banks thanks to Pokemon GO lol
This seems like such a neat idea!! Can't wait to see your progress! 0: Would you mind if I tried something like this too? I know nothing about modification right now, but I'd love to give it a go sometime down the line - I had a chobbits oc way back in the day, it'd be really fun to revive her for a project like this!
That is very true about power banks and Pokemon Go hahaha! Oh man, I'd love to carry a doll around while it's plugged into my phone. That'd be awesome! XD
I'm in the middle of moving (well unpacking from moving) but I'm literally flooded in right now so been working on that all day. Got two rooms left. I'll hopefully finish tonight... then I can start working on my girl some more! I'm excited. ^_^
Ooh this is exciting! And such a cute sculpt to start with! I had a question though, why the peroxide and baking soda bath - was that to help remove stains?
Azael: Yes. She's french resin and I know a lot of people do a peroxide bath to help with staining. It did help some, I didn't expect to work miracles. I may or may not do a bit of a "skin" colored dye bath. Not sure yet.
Ah I see! Thanks for the info! If the staining is really bad then that "skin" colored bath might help. Hopefully you'll figure out something. G'luck!
UPDATE Going to start working on this project a little more. Decided to go a different color route with her. She's going to be black, white and silver themed. I like steampunk but I can't stand brown and bronze/gold. So she's going to be a more gothic steampunk inspired. We have a steampunk and makers fair coming up and I would LOOOOVE to be able to bring her along. Might be a bigger bite than I can chew but we'll see. I'm just excited to work on her either way. I ordered these LED light eyes in blue. I think it'll be a really cool touch. Going to order this wig: https://7m6m5w.bay.livefilestore.co...vcv3igfCQjoq57Y-bYbqVpnHBhZa_l/71.jpeg?psid=1 Today I'm going to work on using the demel some. Get her ears off. Get her penis off. Doing some sanding work on her.
@Call Me Stephanie do you still have a link for those led eyes? I can't seem to find them anywhere... ><
They are actually made by someone here on DOA called foxwind studios. I think I am allowed to place the link here, since it was asked for specifically: /threads/glowing-orbs-led-eyes-by-foxwind-studios.681091/
Thank you ^^ but I will have to wait to be able to see it... If it's in the market place, I have to wait 6 months to access it since I just joined in. Thank you for the information though =^.^=
Hi, Lawrichai, welcome to DOA! I'm a newbie, too! This is a very fun place I just wanted to point out that it isn't a 6 month wait to access the Marketplace. It is only two months - 60 days, and 40 posts (the directions say just to post normally and let the posts add up as the community gets to know you). The 6 months limit applies to accepting commissions in the Marketplace or hosting group orders. Otherwise, I believe you can sell and buy items after you gain the initial access. Here are the rules in case it helps! Marketplace Rules & Access Requirements I just thought you would like to know!
You are very welcome! Also, getting back to topic, I'm looking for to seeing how this doll mod turns out. You have some very neat ideas, Call Me Stephanie!
So. I realized I've had my Narsha for a year... and haven't touched her besides wiping her and taking her apart. The poor thing is still in pieces in a box! Bad dollie Momma... I just moved and once I'm done unpacking I'm 100% starting work on her. Gotta get her done before November for a local Steampunk festival.
