Contest The Great Triathlon Challenge Two: Angel's Aerie

Aug 9, 2014

    1. *too dead to raise hand yesterday. Today, doing better after sleeping like the dead. And an Ibuprofen.*

Hahahaha! I actually left my aerie out on the back porch overnight, and this morning there was a spider web strand stretched across the front of it!
I figured that meant it was structurally sound enough! :XD:

    2. Eeep.... and done *phew*, my fingers are crossed that the next part of the challenge is small!!

Hey Turynn, did you give the dry-erase marker a try??

    3. Good job you guys! I can't wait to see these lovely niches! *u*
(It's been a rough week, ending with me catching an awful cold, so yeah.. sitting out was a goood idea. Otherwise hopes and dreams would have been crushed. And nobody likes crushed hopes n dreams. Not even over ice-cream, no...

    4. am I missing what size the photos need to be? I just read the first page and I don't see anything is it the same as last challenge? oops nevermind its in big bold print..lol

    5. finally just submitted my form.
I read and reread, so I think I have everything all correct, but submitting is the most nerve wracking part.

now that that's all done though, time to go take care of a couple household chores that I ended up putting off for the sake of working on my niche >.>

    6. and... I've fallen behind like on the last challenge XD I'm still stitching together the harness for my wings and the wings themselves... and I need to get them "mostly" done in order to have proper measurements for the aerie O.o.... and.... so if I manage to get anything made, it is going to be as plain as day. lol.... I have 4 hrs to come up with something and take pics x.x

    7. So true! I previewed mine like 5 times, re-read everything twice, double and triple-checked the image dimensions, and still worry I might have done something wrong!

    8. lol s'okay Amy, at least we can all stress about it together xD

    9. Do the pictures have to be 600x800 or can they be 800x600?

    10. I hope so because I did that *_*

    11. Chriandra: Any orientation is fine, as long as your pics don't exceed these numbers. ^_^

    12. Cool, thanks :)

    13. Yay! My entry is in, I have been hesitant to post anything in these threads because my entries pale in comparison with everyone else's!

    14. LOL, definitely! The first thing I did when the wing entries were posted was scroll through to see if mine was there!

Now I'm looking forward to seeing all the aeries! As soon as mine was done I wanted to see everyone else's.

    15. I gotta agree submitting is the nerve wracking part...did I resize the images correctly, did I include all the details, etc. phew done with step two and have hit submit..now off to work on other projects look forward to finding out the votes for challenge 1 and to see what challenge 3 has in store for us.

    16. Me too! I'm so excited to see!

    17. Mwahahahahaha, done at last! And this time not right up against the deadline, yay! And I'm only bleeding a little bit :) (hope we didn't have to list band-aids as materials bought...)

Does anyone know how the photos are going to appear? Like how part one had the front view in the thread then the back view on the voting form with the others as links, is the main picture in the thread going to be one of the elevation shots or the one with the doll? *hopes for picture with doll since that's my best one*

    18. Submitted! Success! YAY!

Can't wait to see what everyone built, how round 1's votes came out, and what challenge #3 is!

    19. I dont know how everyone is able to get all these done and submitted in a week O.o... I'm still sewing from the first challenge... oh how I wish I had a sewing machine XD And...because o that... I dont have anything done for my aerie. So I think I'm just going to build it later and post pics on the forum when I'm done. I start fall semester of college on Monday so I dont really have time to complete my wings, the outfit I'm making, and build an aerie. I'm hoping part 3 is simpler and that I can at least participate in that ^^

    20. I asked earlier and they said the doll photo would be in the thread, with links to the others, and the front elevation would be on the voting page. I found the doll one the hardest to get right, but hopefully it'll look OK!

    21. Thanks! Phew, that makes me feel better - I actually took pictures with my doll first, and by the end lighting, focus, and hand steadyness was just going. I hope you were able to get a good photo of yours in the end!

    22. Finished and not super happy with the result. I think I was a little too ambitious with this round. Can't wait to see the next challenge though. Good luck everyone!!

    23. I think my front elevation is my best photo on this one... but I hope people look at the detail collage too! Some things don't show well in an overall view, I think.

    24. It would be cool if we could get a form that can detect if your pictures are the wrong size or format and give you a little warning pop up. That always stresses me out, too.

    25. Yeah, I think the detailed shots will be really useful in this round! Km glad we get to include those.

    26. Done and submitted! I'm really nervous about what the final challenge will be. But I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone came up with for this one!

    27. I got mine in. I'm not super excited about it but at least I got it done. When I first read the challenge and for the first couple days I honestly wasn't sure if I was going to be able to do it at all. I'm quite proud of myself.

My doll is sitting in it right now and I'm thinking that I might actually use it in the future.

My pictures are SUPER HORRIBLE though because it's night time and my living room has the worst lighting I've ever seen.

    28. like Amy, I think the front elevation shot of mine is probably the best.
I spent the better part of the day trying to get good pictures and was having a lot of trouble for a variety of reasons.
I do also really hope that everyone will look at the detail collages too because I think that could make a big difference as well.

I'm really excited to see what everyone came up with just like with the wings, I think there are so many different directions that people could have taken it.

I'm not sure what I'll be doing with mine when this is all over with. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out, and it seems a shame to toss it after spending so much time working on it, but I have a pretty limited amount of space for doll stuff so idk we'll have to see I guess.

    29. HAHAHAHA.... The Viking funeral. I was just too tired to take better pictures once the light came around to the best spot -- O. Well. At least the artist kids -- well, they're young adults now but you know -- were giving me big props. (They just didn't see all the blobby hotglue ;) ...and the strings thereof). Proof positive that if you don't look too closely....

I proceeded to die like a champ for about six hours and am just sitting here enjoying not doing housework or any other darned thing. ;)

I am SO looking forward to seeing all the entries! I know we're all pretty hard on ourselves but I'll bet we've got some great ones.

    30. I'm definitely keeping mine, I've been waiting something to display my doll in and take photos. I've even bought some furniture and things to put in there after the contest. Not sure where I'll keep it though! In theory it should fold flat if I want it to but I haven't tried.

    31. Hotglue. Fabric glue. But mostly hotglue, applied in exuberant quantities with great abandon :) .... If I'd tried to actually sew my wings I think I might have ended up inventing a whole new dictionary's worth of invictives ;)

    32. I think most of my photos this time ended up blurry... >.< And now I'm worrying about whether or not I had enough walls.

    33. I'm worried about the walls too. x.X

    34. Hey now. There wasn't one entry in the Wings voting that I didn't think was an impressive show of creativity and hard work. I may not know which wings yours were, but I know they were awesome! :)

Me too (on both points)! I've been really excited to see what everyone else has, especially after seeing the awesome variety of wings in round one. I'm sure there'll be plenty fancier than mine, but once again I'm happy with it and I think it suits my exalted and hir wings. (And first thing I'll do again is scan the entries to make sure mine's there, and see what number I landed on this time.)

Same here, but ultimately it's up to everyone who votes to decide that in the end, and whether some of us were a little too loose in the interpretation of the word "wall." (I feel like I may have been, myself.)

I have a sneaking suspicion which were yours ;) and if I'm right, I really liked them and would not have guessed it was all glue!

    35. I think getting creative with walls will be a very interesting aspect to many of these. I can hardly wait the hour to see everyone's niche!

    36. Finally submitted! I've been so sick lately it really got down to the wire submitting mine *.* Sooo much work, but I'm decently proud of my offering to the contest. Congratulations to everyone who finished their work lol, this was pretty grueling! I'm tired, excited, nervous, relieved, and positively ill (I think I can still taste the paint I used O.o). I can't wait to see the scores for the wings too! Good luck everybody!

    37. Whelp, all submitted for this challenge! I am really pleased, I had great fun making it. I can't wait to find out what the final challenge is!!

    38. Wow... didn't think I was going to make it! I actually wasn't even sure I would be able to do this 2nd challenge. Since I work nights I don't have a whole lot of time to do much of anything before going to work. But after I got off work Friday night (technically Saturday morning) I told myself I would try to get something done. At first it wasn't going very well and I was getting very frustrated. So I ended up going to bed for like 4 hours and waking up again around 9:30am and just got done submitting everything a minute ago ^^;; Even though I didn't get to do everything I wanted I'm just glad I finished it :D Really really hope the 3rd challenge won't be so rough o_O;;;

    39. Great job, everyone! Submissions close in less than an hour. We'll also be closing the voting for the first round and post the third challenge. :D

    40. I can't believe I got mine in on time. I was literally emailing pictures off a dying phone and uploading like the wind, and hit submit 2 minutes before I needed to be in the car for work. I'm actually kinda proud of mine too, though I was proud of my wings until I saw everyone else's!

    41. Omg @_@ I don't even know how I finished, but somehow I made it!! Cut it so close! I have such mixed feelings about this hahaha. I worked so hard on it this week so I'm super glad to be done, but I also kind of feel like I probably totally misinterpreted the challenge and that it looks like a grade school kid's project :doh. The photos are even worse. I don't have a tripod so my heart beating out of my chest from the time pressure was jiggling my camera so much haha!

My motto for the next round is definitely going to be to keep it simple. I hope >_<. School starts back up tomorrow so it'll have to be simple no matter what ^^;. Now... to finish the last 11 pages of homework and exam studying I totally ignored once the triathlon started. After I sleep. After I eat. After I clean.

I'm also seriously hoping the next challenge is downhill in terms of challenging-ness XD!! And I haven't even had a spare moment to try the dry-erase market yet but thanks so much for the tip!! When I get around to cleaning today I'll definitely give it a try ^^.

    42. finally submitted, with seventeen minutes to spare!

    43. Five minutes before deadline, please let everything have submitted correctly.

    44. Submitted mine just in time and I'm excited to see what the next challenge is :)

    45. Oh god barely made that.

    46. Entries are now closed!

    47. I so understand what you mean about the lighting. Aaargghhhh,

    48. Wow! Congrats everyone!!! Time for a deep breath and a good night's sleep before plunging into the next challenge :sweat

    49. I regret everything!!!!!!!!!!!! :horror:

    50. I managed with a minute to spare. *_* Somehow. Slow internet is slow. The first time I previewed it I got a "server is not responding" message. Got through on the second try but I only waited long enough to see if they were the right photos in the right places before I hit "submit."

Just saw the next one. . . oh crap.

    51. Round three has been posted!
Challenge two entries will be on display on Monday!

    52. My computer crashed.

I got the pictures on my flickr with about 2 minutes left.

I had to rush to finish it to even take the pictures on time.

      Then my computer crashed.

By the time it restarted, the deadline had passed and the entry form had been taken down.

I can only pray that the mods allow me to submit my entry late... I feel so heartbroken...

      :(

    53. GUGAFGHGHHH. AGH. This project... The wings contest came easily to me, from concept to finish, and the only problem I had was a serious time crunch, and even after seeing the competition I was really proud of what I'd made. But this niche thing was... out of my depth. Ahaaahhhh. I had a lot more time than last week, but I lacked the focus and confidence in what I was doing from the last contest. So many things I'd never really done before and had no idea if they'd work, didn't know how to fix when they didn't work, et cetera... And then I realized when rereading the rules, that my dad had helped me by cutting out a big wooden square base for my original idea and that outside help was against the rules OTZ .

I didn't want to cut out another base that was exactly the same by myself using dangerous-looking power tools I'd never touched before (especially after glancing at these painful injuries already shared on the thread here, aha... ha), and I wasn't sure if I could even finish my concept on time, so I switched last-minute to one of my other ideas I'd had that was much more, ahem, handleable and I'm hoping I can finish my other nichey-likeish thing on my own for actual use -sigh- .

To be honest, I'm actually not sure my entry even made it on time. When I submitted my entry, it was basically right on the deadline and the entry link button was still there, but when I immediately checked back on the front post after submitting (which it did), it said entries were now closed OTZ . Way too close. Way too close! I'll see if I made the cut on Monday.

Honestly though, now that I'm finished I can safely say I am absolutely completely displeased with my niche, hahaha. I kept telling myself to at least make it work to make it to the last leg of the contest, even if I hated how it was turning out, because I have a bad habit of giving up art projects midway. At least I was relatively pleased with the way my original 'niche' had been turning out, despite the slow and stuttered the progress for it.

Despite all that mess, I'm glad for this week's contest anyway, because I did learn and try a lot of new things, and it's made me more open to attempting bigger types of structures like settings or furniture! I didn't realize just how many useful power tools my dad's stocked up over the years because we don't generally use them!

I look forward to seeing all the niches so I can get even more inspired by this contest for things I can try to make for my dolls in the future! And the final contest looks really great too! I'm really excited to participate in it!

    54. Is that really totally against the rules? I mean, they specifically said you could pay for lumber cuts to be done, so I don't see why your dad helping you with that for free would be against the rules.

My dad helped me by cutting a piece (he insisted) while I was working on another part - I didn't end up using that piece, because it bound up, kicked back and took a chunk out of his arm ending up in 6 stitches! But he did help quite a bit by holding things together while I assembled them, showing me how to use some equipment I hadn't used before, stirring paint, and other minor things along those lines.

    55. Ohgods that sounds awful! Gah, I just, can't handle gore or injuries or pain of any kind, so I've been seriously skimming when it comes to this thread and injury tales >_< ! The thought to attempting my dad's big wood-cutting tools kept prompting images of cut off fingers, so I just didn't want to try that at all this week.

But, well... I'll feel pretty dumb if it turns out that making my base for me wasn't against the rules now XD . But at the time, I felt like it was pretty 'against the rules' when I read that it had to be made entirely by myself, so I spent quite some time sweating it out (like an hour of pacing trying to think of a another simple base) before throwing in the towel, haha. Maybe I was just getting last-minute paranoid jitters though.

-sigh- But it's okay! It's okay, since I didn't really walk into this contest expecting to win anything anyway, hahaha. I mostly just would like to participate, made the deadlines and feel good about making the deadlines, and see how I fall in the voting ranks. My highest ambition would be 4th place with that cute little Pola!! Though with my niche, I feel like I can give up on that dream unless I make a killing on the booklore, hahaha.

    56. I saw your post last night just as you made it and looked at the clock and... WOW you really cut it close! :) Congrats for getting in under the wire! :)

:...( Oh my gosh I hurt on your behalf... I can't imagine.

I knew what I was going to do from the beginning but BOY did I pick the wrong material to work with...and by the time I realized that it was well underway. I loved the part on the entry form about construction technique. I had all sorts of inappropriate things I could have put in there :)

    57. Wow. Crazy awesome entries. So much pretty~! :aheartbea

    58. I totally should have gone with my first idea, even though it'd be just something to collect dust later. :doh

I'm amazed, there are some really amazing entries for this one!

    59. Some of these entries really have me floored- whoa!

    60. wow the entries for this challenge are really something.

as I feared mine is less than impressive comparatively from the shot with the doll, but I think I did capture all the detail in the other photos at least.
I'm only on mobile right now so I couldn't really look at each entry in depth yet, but I'm looking forward to sitting down later and having a good look at them all cause I'm really curious about the materials used for a few!
