Contest The Great Triathlon Challenge Two: Angel's Aerie

Aug 9, 2014

    1. Challenge #2: Angel's Aerie

This is the second of three feats of skill with many amazing and fabulous rewards as announced HERE.

      Description

Build a display niche or vitrine for your doll.

      A classic niche: [X]
      Some other inspirational examples: [X] [X] [X] [X] [X] [X] [X]

      Your display space must:
      • Be self-supporting and sturdy enough to be safe for your doll
      • Surround your doll on at least three sides (it does not require complete enclosure, or a glass front)
      • Be large enough to accommodate your doll while it is wearing the wings made in Challenge One (again, complete enclosure is not required)
      • Have a safety feature built in to keep your doll from falling out (i.e. a doll stand or a seat or a strap of some kind)
      • Be constructed entirely by you for this challenge

      Your display space may:
      • Hang on the wall or sit on a tabletop
      • Be constructed of any type of building materials
      • Be painted, decorated or illuminated
      • Completely enclose your doll

      Your display space may not:
      • Be decorated or furnished with doll accessories not made by you (i.e. transplanting your doll's current "room" into a wall mounted box does not qualify)
      • Be decorated or furnished with doll accessories made by you prior to this contest

      Materials:

      • Any repurposed and recycled goods, plus $20 of purchased necessities. You may cut up your own clothing, you may dumpster dive, you may eat ten cans of beans just to get the tin, and you may find that you don't need to spend very much money at all.
      • Basic tools and adhesives like scissors or other cutting blades, power tools you already own and can use yourself, non-decorative tape and glue, needle and thread, etc. are not counted as part of your materials.
      • Your $20 budget cannot be rolled over into the next challenge if you do not spend it.

Repurposed vs Purchased Goods: Your materials are unlimited if you use items that you already have. If you have to purchase something specifically for this contest, either materials or tool rental, you will need to deduct the cost of those items from your $20 budget.

If you have any questions about materials that may link you to your entry, please post in Ask the Moderators so that you do not accidentally disqualify yourself from the contest!

      Rules

      1. Each member may submit one entry.
      2. The display must have been created specifically for this contest.
      3. Minimal use of photo editing, please. We want to be impressed by your creation, not your amazing use of Photoshop.
      4. Dolls featured must be on-topic dolls.
      5. No posting entries or other photos that are recognizably from the same photo shoot until after the Triathlon is closed. Describing your in-process or finished display or posting pictures before the end of the contest (whether on DoA or on outside blogs, forums, etc.) will result in disqualification.

Who May Compete for the Prizes?

This contest is open to all members who have joined on or before the date of June 30th, 2014.
Participants must be members in good standing. Members may not participate if they have a marketplace suspension, marketplace ban, unresolved transactions or a paging status.
Do not accept the prize if you do not intend to keep it. It is unsportsmanlike to sell the prize after receiving it and anyone found doing this will receive a Marketplace suspension and be barred from future contests. Tick the box "I am NOT competing for the prize" on your submission form if you do not intend to keep the prize.

      Entering for Fun

It is possible to participate just for fun, without competing for the prizes. Tick the box "I am NOT competing for the prize" on your entry submissions. Entries will be displayed along with the competing entries, but will not appear on the voting forms.
Current Den of Angels staff may participate, but are not eligible for prizes.
Members who have won prizes in past Triathlon contests may participate for fun, but they are not eligible for a prize in this contest.
Recast supporters may participate for fun using on-topic dolls, but they are not eligible for the prizes from these donors.
If you have a question about your eligibility, please post in Ask the Moderators.

IMPORTANT: Describing your entries, posting photos, revealing your alias, or soliciting votes (either on DoA or on offsite blogs or forums) before the contest has closed will result in disqualification.

      Submission

You will need to provide the following photos:
      1. shot of recycled materials used
      2. shot of purchased materials + receipts (any paid labor for something like lumber cuts at a hardware store must be included here)
      3. front elevation shot of niche
      4. side elevation shot of niche
      5. collage of details
      6. shot of doll in niche wearing wings

Photos must be submitted in .JPEG format, 600 pixels x 800 pixels maximum.
Oversized photos or photos sent in the wrong format will disqualify your entry.

Please preview your entry submission to ensure that your photos appear, are within the size limit, and are oriented correctly.
If you submit your entry and realize you have made a mistake, please post your correction in Ask the Moderators before the contest entry deadline. Do not PM a moderator.

ENTRY FORM: ENTRIES ARE NOW CLOSED
Your entry will be private. Your photos will be downloaded, renamed, and hosted on the DoA server to maintain anonymity. All voting results will be posted under your chosen alias.

      Important Dates

Deadline for entries is Saturday, August 16th 11:59pm EDT.
If you're unsure of your local time, please check this COUNTDOWN CLOCK. Entries received after this time will be disregarded.

Voting Period: Monday, August 18th, 12am EDT - Saturday, August 23rd, 11:59pm EDT

      Voting, Points and Prizes

This is the second task in the quest for the Triathlon prizes. Please remember that you must complete all three challenges in order to qualify for a prize. You may join for fun at any time, but you can only win if you have participated in all three challenges.

Votes will be submitted and tallied privately using a feature in the forum software. The totals will be made available upon completion of voting for each challenge.

Entries will be posted without the entrants' names to try to avoid this being a popularity contest. For this reason, we must stress that identifying your entry to others will lead to disqualification.

Members will have four vote points to distribute to four different entries based on the following criteria:

      • Aesthetic appeal.
      • Proportion and scale.
      • Creative use of materials.
      • Concept development.

Best of luck and really do try to get some sleep this week! Keep your energy up! You're doing a great job!

    2. Omg, this is... well then. Haha

    3. Looks like I'll be headed to my dad's shop again tomorrow! I have an idea in mind, though where I'll store the thing once it's finished I have no idea. I think I'm going to have to make it collapsible. I wish I didn't work full time, this one is going to be more time-consuming than the last one!

ALSO - can it be more along the lines of a "room box"? Or does it have to be more like a small niche? Because I was thinking of something bigger, more like a room with solid walls on three sides, if that is allowed.

    4. I have an idea! Hopefully I can make it work....

    5. Oh maaaaan... well this will be interesting... I don't even know where I'm gonna fit this thing.

    6. This looks like a lot of fun. I just have to make sure I have a place to put it after I'm done. I can't even find space in my room to store the wings I finished xD

    7. ::blink blink::

Well, this is going to be a challenge for sure... Really gonna have to work the brainmeats for this one!

    8. Oh wow... I am totally regretting the size of my doll's wings right now... I wonder I it's ok if we modify them a bit @_@ like change the folding/position of them... otherwise my doll is gonna look like an ant at 600 pixels haha...

    9. By three sides, do you mean our niche can have a back and two sides but no top? No top would make photographing so much easier...

    10. Interesting….really wishing I hadn't made my wings so big right now though. I'll do my best though this week will be majorly tough as I'm moving this week. Have to find time between packing and unpacking.

    11. Oh man...wishing I had used a yosd!!! Lol time to scrounge up supplies!

    12. I immediately regret the design for my wings. Ha!

I hope everyone had fun surviving the first round. :)

      This cracked me up!

    13. The size of your niche is up to you. It does not have to have a top, though that is traditional. It also doesn't have to have entirely solid walls, should you need wing windows, for example. ;) If you made your wings to be functional/foldable, that will certainly be an advantage in this challenge.

There are many diverse cultural references for putting a small figure on display, so don't feel limited to the styles of the examples posted!

    14. *laughs* Well, despite the cheesiness (in my eyes) of the wings I made. . . I'm kind of glad I constructed them the way I did.

    15. Hahaha, I don't think my wings or doll's size should be a hurdle for me in particular, but after what I remember hearing some people say about their wings and dolls in the other thread, this challenge looks like it'll be a lot more difficult for some people than others ^^' ! Good luck, you guys!

I'm quite tired after another full day of Otakon, but I hope to come up with some ideas at my own pace today and tomorrow. I feel this is a good opportunity to make some kind of custom 'room'/display for my doll(s) like I've wanted for them for ages. However, I must say that for me it won't be like the first project where I had a good concept already in mind and the supplies for it pretty much on hand at the start XD . I'll have to think about it more!

      <3 ali

    16. Hmm... so is it supposed to be like a room/set with the interior appropriately decorated or... is it more about the outside shape of the enclosure? That seems like a double challenge. Is it the display or the display case? *_*

    17. wow... I'm kind of glad I wasnt able to finish my wings now. LOL! I have plenty of cardboard for something like this... but no space/not really much else to work with XD My doll I used for the first part of the triathlon could use a display case or something though since she doesnt currently have a "bed"/"room" at the moment though.. hmmm....

    18. Our wings didn't have to be foldable, right? *panic mode* but I am thinking I have a good design and may not need to spend much if anything!! Wooo! At least this week I won't have GISHWHES going on as well!

    19. well I definitely wasn't instantly struck with an idea for this one like I was with the wings, but I'm up for the challenge.

    20. Sorry, I feel stupid, but what does "elevation shot" mean?

    21. more questions, sorry! I'm sketching mine out right now... does "may not be decorated or furnished with doll accessories not made by you" mean if I already own something that would look good hanging on the wall in the niche, I can't use it at all because I didn't make it? That sounds like "you must make every single tiny thing in it" to me? (I'm having a hard time thinking of an example that wouldn't give away which is mine, unfortunately.)

Also, would it be permissible to print something to be used in the niche - posters, paintings, photos, wallpaper, etc.?

    22. It is not intended to be a room set, more like a museum display case or a curiosity cabinet. If it is meant to be against a wall, there is no need to make the exterior fancy, but you may want to think about all sides if it is going to be a table top centerpiece or cloche style display. A simple clear plastic display box for an anime figure is also a vitrine, and a gold-leafed wall shrine for a Saint is also a niche.

Ultimately, you should make what you want to make. The Triathlon is more about learning that you can get crafty with your doll and, in this case, that don't have to spend money to spoil your favorite. You are welcome to decorate your niche with whatever relates to your doll's wings or personal style so that it has meaning for you. Your doll should still be the focus.

The Raven I hope that you decide to carry on for the rest of the Triathlon just for fun! We'd love to see what you create! :)

    23. It's things like this that make me glad I'm a packrat.

    24. I have a question...the niche that's created...does it have to be set up as a "permanent" fixture? Or can it be pieces of things that are obviously used for other things in daily life that I will want back in their proper places when this contest ends?
And by this I don't mean doll accessories I didn't make. More like...what if, for a wacky example, I decided to use my wiifit board as a wall of the niche?

    25. Can the doll sit in this enclosure? ovo;; My wings are rather sizable.

    26. Eep. Even participating just for fun, I'm giving it my all. This is gonna be a big time consumer o-o;
But worth it if it turns out nicely so *takes a deep breath* here goes! Off to forage through my stash!

    27. Oh I'm thinking about it! Dont worry XD lol. I'm just trying to figure out how/if I will be able to make anything and if so... where I will end up putting it/if I will need to go beg/borrow/steal/buy anything for it XD

    28. Ooh, this sounds interesting. I think I can work with this using mostly what I have on hand...

I do second the question about sitting, though- does the doll have to stand like in the first challenge, or can we pose them more creatively in the niche?

    29. This is awesome and I'm excited, but I'm laughing at my foolish choice right now, I soooooo picked the wrong doll for this. XD I picked the favorite, the one I can't see ever selling or reshelling....but that doll is so wrong for all of this XD I should have picked the gaudy one. He would have been perfect.

    30. question.
the rules say that the doll must be enclosed on at least three sides, is it acceptable if some of those sides are very shallow?
for example. in this niche the platform for something to stand on extends past the "walls" to the sides. some of the example photos did show something similar, but I just want to make sure I'm perfectly clear on what's acceptable.

    31. Thanks :) that makes perfect sense :aheartbea. This challenge sounded scary at first but now I'm kind of breathing a sigh of relief it doesn't have to be a set/room!

Unfortunately all the things I thought are either a.) way too time consuming to finish in one week (unless I worked all day every day and ... I don't want to do that) or b.) not at all suited to my doll's wing design. I think I have the beginnings of an idea though but I'm going to wait until a few more questions are answered in case any of them give more hints about how to go about this leg of the contest :XD: I don't think I'll have to buy much ... maybe a color of paint I want to use but don't have... and tonnnnnnnnns of tape/glue.

Shortly after the first contest started I went back and looked at the triathlons from previous years and promptly decided not to trash/recycle ANYTHING until this year's contest is over XD.

    32. I think I'm going for a room set, since that seems to be allowed. I've been wanting to do one like this anyway, and now's the perfect chance! It'll work great with the wings, I think. I'm just hoping it's not too ambitious a project for one week. I've already got a bag of things ready to use!

    33. lol, yes. My favorite doll has been scoffing at this entire thing. Though they're nice enough to allow me to do this to them. They hate the entire idea, though XD

    34. I would say yes they can sit based on this:

    35. YES! I love this challenge so much! I'm so freaking excited. This is the coolest challenge ever in the history of challenges. Even horrible demons get fantastic niches! I would love to make little themed niches for all of my dolls.

    36. I'm a bit sad. I share an apartment, and this is not exactly apartment-dweller/roommate friendly. My dolls live on two shelves because that is literally all the room I can give them. I'll be thinking about this for a while... :(

    37. Hmmm now I'm confused again. Why would our dolls be falling out of niches? If they had to be able to stand in the first challenge, why wouldn't they be able to stand in the second one @.@? Not sure how I'm going to work in a support feature unless I just go for a chair which doesn't really suit the few sketches I've just done XD;.....

Then again a sitting doll might make for a slightly smaller niche vertically at least... that could be helpful...

    38. I'm guessing that the support feature is because a niche is in some cases meant to be wall mounted, and we wouldn't want our precious dollies falling from such heights.
they're also meant for long term display, and while my exalted stands pretty rock solid for the most part, I wouldn't want to leave them standing unassisted long term and thus the need for some sort of support.

    39. Maybe you can make something that folds up or is collapsible?

    40. I'm glad I'm not the only one, if mine were a real person, there's no way in heck they would put up with this. XD As it is I can imagine eyes rolling so hard they're in danger of falling out.
On making something that I would keep and display- this also makes me say it should have been the gaudy one, the chosen one will probably never go near it again after the contest. but I'll make sure it doesn't go to total waste.

    41. Question: is it okay to have the display sit on the floor? I'm pretty sure I can heft what I have in mind on a table top if necessary, but I'd rather not if I don't need to.

Due to the dimensions of SD and larger dolls I wonder if I'll be the only one with this issue.

    42. Cats? Earthquakes? :XD:

It's nice to have the option that they can be seated. :)

    43. It's so great to see all the excitement in this thread already! :D Thank you, everyone, for your enthusiasm and determination! It really is the thing that makes this all worth the work! :aheartbea

Nope, they didn't have to be foldable. If they are made to be flexible, you can pose them in a more folded position than you had them for the first challenge.

An elevation is something you'd see in an architectural illustration that shows the true proportions of a contructed object. Like this. This will allow voters to evaluate how well the proportions of the niche work with the doll it is meant to house (i.e. does he look squished and uncomfortable? Lost in a corner? Or properly framed like the center of attention?)

Elements you use should be repurposed in some way. So you can scavenge architectural elements from around the house to use as niche decoration, but it shouldn't already be a doll scaled item made for a doll room.

Your niche does not have to be permanent, but it should involve some creativity and some construction, so a wiifit board would not meet the brief. I can think of a few creative ways to integrate a board without actually glueing or screwing anything to it, but you might want to use cardboard or wood instead.

Yes, sitting is permitted! Your doll can relax now. :)

Absolutely! If it is wall mounted like your example, we don't expect you to carve a hole in your wall. (though it is allowed, should you be feeling ambitious!) A tabletop variety should offer more enclosure though.

      Precisely. :)

Yes, you may have it on the floor. You may build it outside. We're not really expecting to see much of the surrounding space.

    44. Also, we increased the photo size for submissions. Please pay close attention! You've had a chance to figure this process out in the first round, so you are expected to get it right the first time in the second challenge. :eusa_naug

Okay, that's the full extent of my chastisement.

      Carry on! :dance

    45. This. All of this. My cat's fave game at the moment is "Push the humans' things off the table", and we are still having aftershocks from the big quake years ago - I have to agree on something to stop them toppling out!

And, excitingly, I know exactly what I want to do for this challenge. Amusingly, I start a 40 hour a week job tomorrow XD I was just about to post that I was going to raid my father's shed, and turned to look at my partner and saw that we had almost exactly what I'd need sitting in the middle of the house. Bonus!! That means I can start right away, I wouldn't have been able to make it to my parents until half-way through the week. Time to search out what else I'll need, and get this started!

    46. *laughs* I guess it's a good thing I wasn't seriously considering gutting an old speaker to use the wooden box it's housed in. ;)

Ooh, yay on the photo size increase! :D That will be especially useful with the collage.

    47. That's actually a pretty good idea! But you might not get very many votes for that....

    48. @cats/earthquakes - Ahh I understand :D. I was just planning to have my doll in the case/niche thing only as long as it takes to take the photos and then not again after (like some others I live in a very space-restricted apartment as well and can't put holes in the walls or even keep something like this around permanently) and since my doll can stand fine with the wings and without support........ hmm. For the "seat" option, it doesn't have to have a back/armrests or anything does it :sweat? Would just a place for doll to park its tush be enough?

Is it OK to ask why something like this might not get a lot of votes :sweat ? From my understanding the structure will be a box-like enclosure (or cylinder, or shallow enclosure like the example image of "Classic Niche" on the challenge explanation).

    49. wow I'm glad I checked in here (at work now)
I can start plotting/planning/scetching. And luckily for me I will be visiting my father - shed raid! :mwahaha

    50. Probably because there would be less construction skill involved, just decoration skill. ;) It's always a good idea to show as many different kinds of skill as possible. But the speakers I have around here are certainly big enough.

    51. Oooo :D dads with sheds = lucky!! Sososo wish I had access to my dad's skills/knowledge/tools... but he's cheering me on from afar and for that I'm just as grateful .

I see :) that makes sense...

I already have 5 sketches done... of course I'm eying the most complicated/time consuming one... :doh. In contrast to some others who worry their dolls aren't "gaudy" enough for this kind of thing... I think mine is a little too much so... hahaha :XD: I'll stop spamming up the thread now and hunt around the house for materials.

    52. Aww yeah! My dad always complains I have to much junk lying around but this contest will be perfect for using some of it up and (fingers crossed) I won't have to go out and buy extra materials. Except for perhaps more glue...we shall see. This is exciting! But I don't get home until Friday so it will sadly be quite rushed...nevertheless I shall try my best! :D

    53. In this time... i don't like pukifees XD XD Go big boys and girls! :wiggle
Fortunately, my wings are not so big :D

    54. I think that just about sums up my reaction. :mwahaha

Wowza. --- especially given my FABULOUS crafting skills and the fact that I'll be away from Friday to Monday. Woohoo, time to see if I can work quickly.

QUERY! I have an item in my home that IS handcrafted, which would be absolutely perfect for a portion of the back wall, but which there's no way I'd ever dismantle or alter. It is handcrafted, just not by me. I'm going to take a reasonably educated guess that it would fall into the same category as the Wii Fit board (which was a brilliant idea, btw!) but I just want to toss that notion out there.

Or maybe I can do something similar if I have time. It just won't be nearly as good. :)

You're so funny. :) I think having fun spamming each other is part of the enjoyment, isn't it?

You and me both! But I'm going to hazard a guess that, knowing your work, you have not yet BEGUN to cheese. I think mine were something just shy of a Roquefort. We'll see ;)

    55. I'm always kindof like this.. XD;

Looking forward to seeing all the entries :D :D

    56. Oh WOW.... I like this challenge and dislike it at the same time! Its going to stretch my creative juices which is my favorite part of this hobby. I just hope I can come up with something that I can actually pull off. :) GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!!!

    57. Don't we all feel like this?!

WOOT!!! now to get some ideas!!!!

    58. I suppose so XD!! It's a bit awkward for me since I'm more of a lurker than a chatter so I feel like I posted waaaay too much haha.

Yuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuup. This is exactly how I feel haha.*_*

    59. Can we give this some kind of award for best humor ever? I just about choked to death just now! Brilliant (and yep, I feel your pain)

    60. Agreed. I am totally regretting my wing choice now too. My wings are very wide and my doll can not sit with them on. She has to stand. This second round is going to be huge! :o
