Contest The Great Triathlon Challenge #2: Chop Shop Props!

Jul 29, 2013

    1. I have two questions. If we don't use everything in the photo of our supplies, that's okay, right? And, second, do we have to save any material from the first challenge for the last challenge?

    2. Thank you for reassurance about the name process angelynx-prime --

Just for verification from a mod, my doll wasn't posted as "take a look but-don't-vote" [along with the other one]. But was posted on the announcement/instructions thread. If I could complete a project for this challenge, do you want it/would it be posted? I'm still "with ya" at least on the sidelines and cheering. I don't mind being dropped from the triathlon. I picture the circus performers keeping a bunch of plates spinning on top of poles when I think of you mods watching over all these contests as it is. So, if it would be posted, should I
      1) use same doll
      2) wearing what I made for her, or something else
3)...to confirm? My entry will not be eligible either way, in any way, for voting

If you aren't going to post it, I don't see any reason to keep tinkering with this one.
You created NO shortage of interesting things to tackle!
All kinds of contests. You all should get a prize for creative contest design. ;)

I'm going to read back through all the questions and answers again. Using decoupage of one allowed item over another, forbidden use of glue? I understand you don't want commercial items used, like a new napkin. Would images from recycled printed materials be OK for surfaces, applied with glue? Maybe the point is that you want to see the surface of the item used in the creation, with no alterations?

whew. Who knew it could be so complicated.

    3. Can't resist. ~ "...easy for you to say..." ~

    4. Well my entry is either going to be awesome or fail miserably, the only thing that's certain is I will have many hot glue/ heat related burns healing after this month is done.

    5. I took a break yesterday and we went to an art exhibit. I'll be working into tomorrow when I'd hoped to be done today but that's still ok. I'm much less stressed in this second competition because I refined my design early on. This triathlon-style competition is teaching me a lot.

How is everyone else coming along?

I may have time to get my entry in for another competition if my timing is good for the 3rd part and the convention isn't too terribly busy this coming weekend.

    6. It is cool that you are doing well. Sadly I am genuinely worried about running out of time on this I am actually going out tomorrow and so I need to get it done today! Sadly I have to wait for it to dry for long periods. Which is taking the bulk of time. My first idea also went wrong which cost a lot of time also. I really hope I can finish!

Is there any one else still trying to get theirs done too?

    7. mimimontoya and karla-chan, saluting you as we all craft onward! I'm glad I hadn't started cutting my fabric remnant, I had to re-take my materials pic because of a change in plans. I'm gonna have to scramble to finish this tonight so I can take pix tomorrow, but I feel confident of that. :)

I wish I knew if I'll be able to undertake part 3 or not... We're leaving Thursday for a convention and won't be back till Sunday night, so though I'll see the announcement of part 3, I won't be able to tackle it until Monday soonest. It will all depend on what it is and how long we have to complete it. I'm hoping! would hate to bail out after 2 challenges.

      Ouji,
I salute your courage and burn resistance!

    8. Thanks so much, I will do my best! On the plus side this one seems to be going better and it is something my doll will still use afterwards. It is good that you didn't loose your fabric piece! I am gonna have to do the same too. However I am not done the construction yet and it needs to dry! Making it pretty shouldn't take too long though. Although if I don't finish the construction tonight. I don't stand a chance of finishing.

Yikes, I hope you can find out what it is as soon as you can, because from my experience the 3rd part is always the hardest. I would hate to bail out too, so hopefully we can see it through to the end!

    9. Everyone, keep at it, you're almost at the finish line! You all did so well with #1, I'll bet #2 will be equally, or more fun and creative!

kizzie: I never thought that fabric from #1 might be needed for #3. Most of what I have left are tiny pieces. All I can do is hope I don't need any large pieces of fabric. oh well.

Ougi: You described my sentiments exactly! Generally I finished with only minor burns, just one burn that almost blistered. No cuts, surprisingly!

mimimontoya: I'm impressed you were able to refine your design early on. I found myself continually scrambling every day looking for new pieces of recyclables and modifying as my widget grew.

karla-chan: Even though I've had a lot of fun with #1 and 2, I have to admit I'm a little bit apprehensive about #3. Like you say, it will probably be the hardest challenge of all.

    10. You will not need to save your leftover materials for the third challenge, but you will need both of your creations from the first two challenges. ;)

    11. St. James: Thank you for the info! I was trying to imagine a use for my bits, now I don't need to. Yep, you've successfully added to my apprehension. lol!

    12. Sorry, I think my question might have been missed, but I was wondering, if I would like to show a feature of the prop that requires the doll to interact it with it, can I add that photo of the doll/prop interaction into the collage portion of the photo submission?
      Thanks Bunches!!

    13. I feel the same, however I have to finish 2 first! Especially since it has just been said we will need the things from challenge 1 & 2.

    14. Yes, you may include this in your collage.

    15. Thanks a million bajillion St. James!! I wanted to load my pictures sooner than late :P

....aaaaand submitted *phew* Good luck everyone!!!! Forward march with crunch time :XD:

    16. for anyone using Papier-mâché you can shorten your drying time a LOT by putting your creation into an electric oven and putting the fan heat setting to 40C/100F or into your dryer onto a mounted drying rack - be warned that if its around a balloon it will burst the balloon so its best to do it in short bursts until it can hold its shape without the internal support, remove the balloon, then continue drying it out :)

I'm not using it but having kids at home means lots of Papier-mâché activities and night-before-the-pageant gluing!!

    17. It's like secret paper-mache kung fu techniques! ^____^ That being said, to everyone whose projects involve ovens or other such dangerous possible fire-inducing hazards, please be careful and stay awake enough to keep an eye on your project at all times!!!!

    18. Done! Huzzah! :D And it's even kind of cool. Now all I need is photos. (And eight or nine hours' sleep.)

Good luck to everyone still working!

    19. I still have a few things to attach, then photos, so I'm still plugging along and will be tomorrow! But not until 2 minutes before deadline, haha! Before supper time is good.

Eeep, Ougi and Snowleopard, I hope you weren't burned too badly, maybe next time you can keep a large junk pair of blunt craft tweezers handy to poke and push the hot glued things into place to save those fingers! They are my secret weapon.

      Karla-chan,
I hope yours came along well today!

angelynx-prime, we have Glitchcon this coming weekend too. It's local but I'm sweating #3 and the timing too.

My fiancé also 'helpfully' reminded me that leg 3 in a triathlon is often the hardest but...

In for a penny, in for a pound

I WILL finish and enter everything. I hope everyone else can too.
He has been super-supportive but very itchy standing by because he wanted to help me with my entries. I told him we should each enter next year! :cheer

    20. Or as the Japanese saying goes, "if you're going to eat poison, may as well lick the plate". =)

*g* oh yeah, I remember the final competition in the last Tri VERY well. I set myself an insanely difficult task, finished on time but my photos of it were so fail I still flinch to look at them. But I still have the thing I built and am very proud of it; it was the first dolly-related thing I made that came from a genuine dream/vision instead of just being a pair of jeans or the like. That's the great thing about the Triathlons, they really push you to imagine and stretch your skills.

:sweat I hope we're both able to finish part 3 despite having weekend plans...

    21. Well since everyone seems to be thinking about it, I will torment you all by telling you that leg 3 will be really fun! The MOST fun, to me ~ It's my favorite of the triathlon XD..so don't worry too much about it!

    22. I am definitely going to - the other two times I've done the DoA triathlon I've never managed it cause of stuff coming up lol.

*twiddles thumbs* I hate that part of challenges where you're just stuck waiting for glue to dry or something, and you can't do anything else on your entry but you really want to XD Might have to start making a people dress to stop myself checking my entry every five minutes haha

    23. And....it's built. AAAAAHHHH. So much relief! I spent hours and hours just fixing a huge error I made when I grabbed my old pattern instead of my new pattern and cut, ****, ****, and **** over half of the project in the wrong size. I couldn't just change sizes, because the other half of the project was in the new size! But...it's done, except for one little doo-dad I'll put on in the morning. Then photos and uploading.

C'mon guys! You can do it. karla-chan, I am holding my breath for you!

    24. Whooot Whoooot!!! done again!!!! -high fives everyone who's finished-
XD this was such a difficult challenge.... reminded me of doing school projects lol!!!

-sits in the band-aid corner- I have lost count the amount of times i have cut myself during this XD gahhh!!!

Goodluck again to all who are still going~~!!!!!<3

    25. I feel like I'm attempting to run up a hill that's covered in waist deep mud! So much needs to dry so I can start on other parts and just... gah! Thankfully I have no work tomorrow so hopefully I can stay up late and prep hardcore so I'll only have a bit to do tomorrow. Either that or I'll hope a few energy drinks and pull an all nighter on this thing.

    26. I have JUST got it finished now and I only have about 10-15 mins before I have to leave the house! So it is a very close call for me!

I hope everyone gets theirs done in time, best of luck to those who haven't finished yet!

    27. OMG you and me both!!! its crazy!! Add to that blisters from me and my pick-axe and concrete smashing today and I have 2 1/2 fingers left unscathed!!!

    28. Just a reminder that entries are due TONIGHT, in about 12 hours~

    29. Big round of applause to everyone for your stamina on Round 2. It was a toughie! And cheering everyone who are nearing completion. You all WILL get your projects finished! *waving a flag*

I'm intrigued by everyone's vague comments describing their projects. I can't wait to see the results!

A hair dryer on LOW setting can be used for spot drying too. Be careful to keep the hair dryer moving so the area doesn't get melted/burned or overly hot.

      whitewings: "pick-axe and concrete smashing"--whoa! You're scary!

Laelen: the thought of #3 is driving me nuts--and now you say "the MOST fun", for you, huh? Well, fun can be clean or dirty or devious...lol!

    30. Photos taken, will be able to get entry in after work, w00t! :)

BIG cheers to everyone still finishing - it sounds as though literal blood, sweat and tears (and burns and bruises) have gone into the entries in progress! we're suffering for our art =) Go team, go!

    31. I didn't think I'd finish this one. My first idea and half my allotted test supplies went kaput when the idea just didn't pan out :(

But determination and an judgmental hubby got me fired up for round two! Was gluing right up until my last good hour before work. But managed to get it in. I'm scared and excited to see what is in store for the last leg of this contest. It's been so very fun and my baby is enjoy the new toys this is bringing about!

    32. Done!!! Now I am going to work... phew!!! it is a big relief

    33. Finished. Now just to let it dry, take some pictures, upload and submit. LOL :)

    34. Project done, time for a little break, snack and salt soak in the tub, then the photos!

I love glue. I've been a fan since my first minty tub of paste and odd little brown bottle of snotty mucilage.
I love hot glue especially but this was my first time using fabric hot glue.
It is acrid, stinky and smokes, do not like it in use, we will see how the flexibility wears when gluing fabric to a thing.
      I hope the smell doesn't linger...:horror:
If it DOES stay flexi, it may be useful to glue wefted hair track, crin and foam strips/lacing or extension microbraids into wigs to enhance them.

I've learned quite a bit and worked more simply and slowly in this second challenge so later in the wee hours when St. James is likely to pop on to announce the final, I will have actually wound down a little!!

i hope everyone is either entered or very close! Ganbatte ne!

    35. "snotty mucilage"! oh man, that takes me back! I remember the days before Elmer's Glue-All when that crumbly yellow stuff was all you could get, and I went thru buckets of it making endless scrapbooks (and how I cried when they told me it was made from horse hooves...which isn't true!). White glue is a vast improvement on that goo! And this was my first time making papier-mache with white glue-water mix, I'm delighted with how well it works, so that was an experiment well tried...didn't even use any science ninja tricks to dry it, just left it out in the sun. Yay!

Off to choose and size the pix now, then a breather before the reveal of Part 3.....:sweat Ganbatte minnasan! you CAN do it!

    36. XD Just trust me, everyone will have lots of fun! It isn't scary! XDDDDD

Jeez reading through everyone's injuries I'm fairly sure we'll need a new "how I injured myself during the anniversary events" meme XDDDD

Good work, everyone! These entries are looking fantastic so far as well >u< About 7 hours to go now...

    37. Almost the entirety of this challenge it's been gloomy and rainy out, but today it's been better, so I was able to get good lighting for my pics ^^

Good luck to those still working!

    38. OK, this may be a dumb question, but when it says "full-length picture of your doll", does it mean the doll must be standing? or does it just mean the whole doll must appear in the pic?

    39. Bwahahaha, this is a fantastic idea!! "I participated in the Den of Angels Triathlon and all I got were these battle scars...."

    40. Done and entered! Time for delicious candy snacks! :chocoheart:truffle:whitetruffle
I knew I should have ordered that case of virgin sparkling wine, yesh.

Still working? You can do it! :sumomo:

    41. Yes, I am done...time for :chocoheart. Hopefully I submitted it right...for all of you still toiling I second mimimontoya :sumomo::sumomo: GO! GO! GO!

    42. Well after idea number one kinda blue up on itself... well more of an implosion really... it didn't expand but rather collapse in on itself, I tried again with different materials

And actually finished with time to spare. Thank goodnes.

    43. Can't post my entry till I get an answer to my question :atremblin

    44. Done and sent! I now raise a glass of bubbly to celebrate and toast all you hard-working crazy artists who do not give up. Cheers!

    45. Doll doesn't have to be standing, just need to see the whole doll With the prop.

    46. Working on submitting now...this contest is such a cool opportunity! My house is such a wreck while I neglect it to craft doll things, but I wouldn't have it any other way. And I only sustained one serious hot glue burn...success! Good luck to everyone still working. I absolutely cannot wait to see everyone's amazing entries, especially after part 1...there were some beautiful outfits on display!

    47. All submitted. Just want to say, the password to the album is still the same. Now to anxiously await the last challenge. Good luck everyone!

    48. Ugh... hot glue burns. Glad you only got one!

    49. *happy dance* That's two DoA anniversary contests entered well before the cut off time, and on Monday I handed in a uni assignment several hours before it was due as well - this is very new for me, usually I am running very, very behind!

I can't wait to see what everyone came up with for this challenge, it was rather tricky in some ways but also really fun!

    50. I was routinely sticking my fingers straight into the hot glue, but my glue gun is low-temp so it didn't hurt :) I think I became impervious to it after using it for a month in school XD I did manage to draw a wee bit of blood, though ^^; But it was tiny, didn't even need a bandaid.

    51. There! done and sent! and I even made a collage in Photoshop for the very first time :). I am a happy me! MANY thanks to all our super and super patient mods!

Gonna go have dinner and watch some anime--one last flag-wave for those still headed for the finish line, go go go! :sumomo:

    52. Uploaded. *Gasps for air.*
Somehow, I'm panicked that I did something terribly wrong on this submission...I kept double checking for 45 minutes. Finally hit send. Fingers crossed.

      Go, friends, go!

    53. I was camping during the first challenge, and dealt with all sorts of hurdles to enter it anyway because I wanted to compete so badly and was so excited! I figured I would have just enough time after getting back for the second challenge...but I hadn't been aware my work schedule would be completely switched around immediately when I returned, and I have not had any time to complete this at all. D=

After all that, I am just gonna have to bow out. Good luck to everyone still in the running! All the entries in the first round looked great; I bet these will too!

    54. Antorell, it doesn't have to be complicated TT__TT It's too bad that work is getting in the way :( Will you still play along with us, even if you don't get your entry in?

Just a little over an hour to go, everyone!

    55. Glad to see that you were able to get your project done MissEmily. Now for all that are racing, break a leg, but not your doll's!

    56. Woo! Made it! :D Had to go dive through our apartment's recycle bins today for a material I didn't know I'd need at the outset and that comes from a product my fiance and I don't use. XD After the challenge is over I'm gonna add some finishing touches that the bounds of the challenge wouldn't let me add to what I've made and keep it around as a real prop. I'm really happy with how it turned out.

    57. Does our fabric remnant need to be in the materials picture?? :o

    58. I was going to bail on this leg because on our renovations... the tradies think I'm hillarious at the moment!! One minute I'm wielding a pick-axe the next playing with a doll on a work site XD I only just finished/photographed/edited/uploaded/submitted and realized aside from using *censored* and *censored* as my materials I didnt include the scrap of fabric in the before photograph...

    59. So... I just now realized I didn't include which part I used from our last challenge in my materials photo. :c Does this mean I'm out or can I edit my photo? T_T

    60. Wellll. All right, I attempted a last minute entry! But the problem is quality, not really complexity. I'd already sank my available hours into a much nicer idea that it turned out impossible to finish on time. I guess it is better to have a really weak second round than to quit?
