Contest The Great Triathlon Challenge #2: Chop Shop Props!

Jul 29, 2013

    1. Challenge #2: Chop Shop Props

      Description

Your doll has something to wear now, but what about something to do? Create a prop that your freshly dressed doll can interact with; i.e. a chair, a sword, a toy, a mechanical minion....

      Your only materials will be:
      • Recycled and recyclable materials: steel, aluminum, glass, or plastic containers; magazines, newspapers and cardboard. All recycled materials must be repurposed (no showing your doll reading a magazine or drinking a beer). All color must come from the actual materials chosen.
      • Your leftovers from Challenge #1. This element should not comprise more than 25% of the completed design.
      • Tape and glue. The tape must be invisible and cannot be used as a design element. Glue must be clear and cannot be used as a design element.

      Rules

      1. Minimal use of photo editing, please, but make sure your design is shown clearly enough for voters to see it well.

      2. The prop must have been created specifically for this contest.

      3. No posting entries or other photos that are recognizably from the same photo shoot until after judging is closed. Describing your in-process or finished prop or posting pictures before the end of the contest and judging (whether in this thread, elsewhere on DoA or on outside blogs, forums, etc.) will result in disqualification.

      4. Props must be modeled with on-topic dolls.

      How to Enter

You will need to provide the following:
      • Your Triathlon alias.
      • A "before" picture showing your doll with your materials.
      • A full-length picture of your doll with the prop. This must be shown using the same doll from Challenge #1.
      • A picture of the prop by itself (this can include a collage of pictures made into one image showing your favorite details).
      • A description of the prop and it's function.

      Who may enter?

This contest is open to all members who do not currently have any unresolved transactions or other disciplinary measures in place. Members must have joined the forum before June 25th, 2013.

The contest is also open to all forum staff, though staff may not participate for prizes. If you have won a doll or part of a doll in a past DoA contest, you may enter for fun but you may not participate for prizes.

      Specifications

You may submit one prop only.

Photos must be sent in JPEG format, 600 pixels on the longest side.
Oversized photos or photos sent in the wrong format will be disqualified.

Entries are due on or before August 20, 2013, at 11:59:59 Eastern Daylight Time. For those of you who are unaware, the US is on Daylight Saving time. Entries received after this time will be disregarded; if you do not know what time this is where you are, use this link.

Entries will be submitted directly to the moderators using a form that will become available in a few days.
Do not PM the moderators with your entry; this form is the only way to enter.

If you are not interested in the top prize or no longer qualify for the prize due to errors in your Challenge #1 entry, please indicate this on your entry form. Do not accept the prize if you do not intend to keep it; it is unsportsmanlike to sell the prize after receiving it and anyone found doing this will receive a Marketplace suspension and be barred from future contests.

      Entry Form

      Entries are now closed.

      Voting

Entries are posted HERE for member voting from August 25th-August 27th. Votes will be submitted and tallied privately using a new feature in the forum software. The totals will be made available on completion of voting.

Entries will be posted without the entrants' names to try to avoid this being a popularity contest. For this reason, we must stress that identifying your entry to others will lead to disqualification.

We will also be employing the same codename system as last year - pick a good secret identity for this year's contest! You may not use the same code name you used in past contests.

      Points and Prizes

This is the second task in the quest for the gorgeous Sadol Love60 Yena one-off! Please remember that you must complete all three challenges in order to qualify for the prize. You may join for fun at any time, but you can only win if you have participated in all sections.

Members will choose the best entries in three not-yet decided categories - so there will be three ways to earn points! Focus on making a great prop and you'll be on your way to earning points no matter what categories are chosen!

The scoreboard will be updated in the opening post at the end of each segment.

    2. I suddenly love where I work because we get so many cool recyclable things!!

    3. aaaaaand the moment to feel relief is over fellow triathletes!!

    4. So random question, are we limited to just one object we can make or if we want to get a little crazy can we go crazy? Also is paper mache alright to use since it's just clear glue and water with some newspaper?

    5. You can go as crazy as you want, but you'll still have to narrow it down to a single item for voting. ;)

Paper mache is the right idea! :D

    6. A couple of quick questions... are we allowed to use multiple recycled materials in our prop? And does the prop need to be for the same doll we used in part 1 of the triathlon? Thanks!!

    7. There is no limit to the number of recyclable items you can use, but it should create a single object rather than an entire set or something.

      Same doll different challenge!

Thank you for all of the great entries in the first challenge! Please note that your time for this one is quite a bit shorter!

    8. This is an interesting idea! I am not sure what I am going to do for this yet! I will have to get thinking.

    9. Is there any restrictions on the tools we can use?

    10. Ack! Recycling left the house yesterday! Blech. Thankfully, I save the most interesting bits for the kids to do art projects with. Sorry kids, mommy's raiding the stash!

      An important question, I think:
"Your leftovers from Challenge #1. This element should not comprise more than 25% of the completed design."
Does this include our leftover THREAD? Technically, it is leftover from the first challenge....so I would assume yes. But I don't want to get started and then have to trash the project. (Holds breath for answer....)

    11. are wooden fruit cases recyclable?
my supermarket had quite some stacked....

oh and when you state all colors must be of the materials chosen....
do you mean if I use carboard it must show the cardboard color or can I stick colorful paper over it?
(just so I won't make the grave mistake i made a few challenges ago with a lightsource and shadow that had no visible lightsource or doll in the picture just a large shadow, lol)

i amalready really busy since I am going on a 3 day holiday Monday, so please have the submit button up before that time else I won't make it, puppy eyes.

    12. Ooooo I need to think on this one. Good thing I have plenty of recycling still sitting around. Yey for being to busy to take it out! *cackle*

      Edit:
Also question. I see that it's mentioned that the color must be from the object, but as long as we follow the 25% guideline can we cover things with our left over materials? Just making sure before I settle on an idea.

    13. This one is a little more challenging. :) I have to think awhile for this one. Things are coming to mind, just have to find the materials for it. Good luck everyone.

    14. I'm at the starting line this time. Yippeee!! YES, I want to stay with you guys to the end. Loving it.

    15. What fun! Are we limited to the materials listed? Can we use hot glue in this challenge?

    16. DaughterofEden: I love your enthusiasm! :sumomo:

Everyone: Good luck and have fun!

    17. Oh dear... I had assumed we could because it is clear. Will have to wait and see the "ruling" on this one.

    18. Since I am already out of the running for the garment part, if I have time, would it be OK if I finished working my plans for it out? The top was only just begun. Had hoped to add some embellishments to it. But not a big deal. They just want to see it at our next local meet up which is next Tuesday. Was still going to stick to the guidelines to use only what was on the dress to begin with.

edit: snowleopard -- thankie. :) -- I'm still running in overdrive from the last 29 hour marathon to complete something for the stage one.

      :dance

    19. Yay! I'm so glad you are all excited by this! :)

      No restrictions on tools.

You may use your thread. Could come in handy in areas where you might have wanted to use nails or rivets or wire...

Wood is not generally recyclable, so no fruit crates.
You may later colored paper over other objects to make them the color you want it to be, but it cannot be fresh store-bought colored paper. Find your colors in the advertisements or bottle labels etc.

We plan to have the entry form ready by Friday.

You can use your leftover material as a color source or surfacing treatment, yes.

      Hot glue is allowed! :)

DaughterofEden, you may commence embellishment! Do show us your final design! This is a competion, sure, but we always hope that the challenges will really be about members proving to themselves that they can make something for their dolls that is worth keeping with a limited budget and timeframe. :) I still use parts of the set I built for a Triathlon years ago! :)

    20. This is going to be fun! I didn't chat in the thread for part 1 cause I wasn't so sure but my 3D design class last semester prepared me for this one! XD *dancydance* Just need to gather my materials :)

Quick question: Should the doll be in the outfit from Challenge 1 or not, or doesn't it matter?

    21. Your choice, it just needs to be for the same doll.

    22. Can we choose not to use the left over pieces from part 1 of the challenge?

    23. You don't have to use all of it, but you must use something from it even if it's simply used as a fastener or support system. If it's just tacked on somewhere it should be integral to the design; if it's not visible in the final result it should be integral to the engineering.

    24. I have a quick question - for the final photo, should our doll be wearing the outfit we made for the first challenge? Thanks in advance!

Edit - this has already been answered. Sorry for the duplicate question.

    25. I'm so happy to see this thread is already at two pages. The excitement is palpable!

    26. Thanks for clearing that up, I am going to have to give it a good think how I am going to use some of it. :)

    27. Does papier mache count as an acceptable use of recycled materials? Either in the traditional torn strips or as a pulped "clay?"

    28. Paper mâché is still okay! :) No store bought stuff, though. You should be making it yourself.

    29. So I'll be using a lot of things to bring my vision to life. However most of it is the same thing repeated. To make the photo of all the before things easier can I do like *insert item here* by "x" amount on the photo itself? I also have no clue how many it will take to complete my vision until it is done so I figured it would be best to ask. Lol

    30. That's fine, suppi. We just want to be impressed by the transformation, we don't need to see the exact quantity. :)

    31. I'm trying not to panic on this one....We're leaving for a 3 day mini-cation tomorrow. Not sure what, if anything I can do while away. Gagh! This triathlon is just too fun and consuming!

    32. The rules state: "A "before" picture showing your doll with your materials." is required.
Because I'm designing as I go and trying to figure out how to make my widget I might not use a few small pieces in the picture. On the flip side, I might find some small item that will work after beginning to construct the thing. Will this be all right? I will make a conscientious effort to use what is in the picture, but wanted to ask to be sure. Thanks!

btw, 'chop shop' is so fitting! Unfortunately, I'm dangerous with sharp tools! lol!

    33. You can make a montage of extra items used, but the bulk of the items used should be in the first photo with your doll.

    34. I'm guessing this also means no going out and buying aluminum foil, right? =)

    35. Good question. No buying aluminum foil. Apart from that aluminum foil isn't easily recyclable so it's out for that reason, too. :) I live in a city that has a huge recycling program and aluminum foil is not on the list of recyclables.

I'd like to reiterate what St. James wrote above about colored paper, etc. Please use paper from commercial products (cereal boxes, magazine pages, direct mail, newspapers), not colored card stock, copy paper, etc. It would be too easy to go out and buy the perfect color of paper, scribble on it and toss it into the recycling bin-- voila! Recycled! But that wouldn't be fair. ;)

    36. Thanks for the clarification. My apartment complex allows aluminum foil as a recyclable, along with pie tins, but I admit I've never seen a big batch of it in the bin.

Anyway, OK, that's out. Back to the sketchboard...

    37. Hmmm i actually have two leftover aluminum bbq tins that i thought of using and since have i used them in yesterday nights dinner, can i actually use those or not?
(Yep i actually use them to cook in my oven for those dutchies knowing bbq weather is over)

    38. An aluminum container, like a pie pan or bbq tin is fine, as long as it's recycled. Just not foil.

    39. (Hokey bouncy Singing)
      OOOOOOh the contest's awesome and the mods are great;
We're all up and we're crafting late...
      (Repeat ad nauseum)

Seriously. This is the endless loop singing in my head as I do chop shoppy prop things. Sheesh I'm strung out excited.

    40. After coming up with a complete blank for ideas all day, I finally figured out what I'm going to do. So excited!

    41. XD I'm actually quite enjoying your verses, MissEmily. Hahaha If you feel like taking a break maybe some triathalon poetry is in order!

    42. Go you, eosthilas! I finally got my idea too - huge relief, I was afraid I'd have to bail out, but I have it. Starting work tomorrow!

    43. I did my mood board and materials list today and gathered the recyclables we have and looked over my challenge 1 leftovers. I'm ready to 'shop' recycling sources in the morning then hit it. I planned this challenge as a more modular undertaking with a priority list. I had too many ideas and possibilities for the first challenge and that plus some materials 'surprises' slowed me in the design process. We are going on a museum day trip to Kansas City on Sunday but I still plan to be done and entered by early evening Tuesday. No last 5 minutes again! Hooray for crock pot cooking, salads and wraps this week! I'm getting 2 convention presentations ready for a local con on the weekend of the 24th too. I may sleep through September!:mwahaha

    44. This may sound crazy (and i may not have time for it anyway, especially with our relentless rain), but could i melt down soda cans and cast some parts from the aluminum?

    45. I like your brand of crazy, sir. ;)

As long as you are taking proper precautions, you can manipulate your base materials however you like.

    46. Question about the deadline. I know that in this thread it says the 20th of August, but in the thread about the triathlon overall, it says that the contestants will have one week. Are we going with five days? Or is it going to be seven?

Another question. If we have decided to do the challenge just for fun, but with the first entry had said for the prize, is there a way to take ourself out of the running for the prize?

    47. The deadline is indeed the 20th, so I guess that's a business days week. ;)

You can take yourself out of the competition on your next entry form.

    48. Oh my goodness, I have the BEST idea for this :D I am going to get started tonight!

    49. Thanks St. James. To those who are aiming for the prize, I wish you the best of luck

    50. The entry form is now available! :D

    51. Ok this is a question about the colour paper, you said only commercial products. Is used wrapping paper, paper bags and napkins OK and things like that OK? I did legitimately pull them out of my re-cycling bin.

    52. Oh no! Super glad someone mentioned this, 'cause I was going with the one week thing too...and I told my kids sure we could actually take a pseudo vacation this summer--I could spare 3 of my 7 days. 4 days was crazy but doable. But now that we really only have five days...and you know I can't tell my six year old that I'm canceling our only summer trip.

I worked so hard in round 1. I don't know what to do. (Goes to stare at project pile and hopes it will give some guidance.)

    53. Until now I had never even heard of making papier-mache with white glue - we always used flour-and-water paste when I was a kid. But this recipe sounds quite do-able and likely not so messy. Yay for learning new ways.

But: Aw, MissEmily, I'm so sorry! are you absolutely sure you can't do your project in two days? maybe with an all-nighter and a lot of coffee? :(

    54. It can be interesting to learn how others do it. I learned with watered down PVA glue as well. :) I have heard you could do it with flour and water but I often wondered how that worked. :)

Although I have not done papermache in several years!

    55. Okay, I have a recycling question - can we use recycled fabric? Or is that a no-no? I'm one of those people who can't throw away fabric, so I have boxes of fabric which would have otherwise been thrown away. Or does it have to be items which are technically recyclable, like papery things?
Also, with the 25% use of the leftovers from the first challenge, are we going with volume or what? I've got an idea for what I want to do, but I'm not sure whether it'll come in at under 25% - should I use the ask the mods forum to check it?

    56. It's been a long time for me too, but I was intending to use the flour method until it occurred to me that it does not dry clear, so probably wouldn't be acceptable for the challenge. It works great though - it just takes advantage of the natural stickiness of gluten (if you've ever made bread dough you know the stuff is plenty sticky) and since you only need about 1 cup or less of flour and half that much water, it's about as cheap as glue gets. You just mix them until the mixture is smooth, add more flour if it's too watery, then soak the paper strips in it. Maybe it'll regain popularity as a "green" craft - you can't get much more organic than flour. =)

    57. That is pretty awesome actually, I might try that in the future. I have found I am liking doing papermache actually, it is kind of relaxing in a way.

    58. Ever had one of those brainstorm moments and think you have the "it" idea, that you think is totally unique and by doing it it will be a landslide in your favour.... then out of curiosity google it only to discover not only has it been done to death.... but has been since the early 1930's.... Back to the drawing board....

    59. whitewings, now I'm so curious! after the challenge closes you'll have to tell us what it was.

    60. I still want to participate either way, but I was just thinking. I posted my doll and her outfit. I didn't know it would build like this. So being anonymous isn't possible for her, nor using part of the original garment unless I camouflage it in some way so it can't be recognized by her costume details already seen. If it is going to be something for HER (dressed like that) to interact with, that greatly affects what I see as a good choice to "prop her" with.

I don't have an anonymous ID set up yet. Do we just enter a name when we turn in the submission form, or is there a formal process for that? It was the extra processes that ruined me the first round. I had everything ready, just fumbled around so long trying to get every little detail right when I was entering. After stumbling around on the computer in a panic attack trying to get my stuff in, I don't want to go through that again. If this is an extra deal, the anonymous name, I want to get it set up now, while I'm in a normal mind. ^^ ...as close as I get anyway.
