Contest The Great Triathlon Challenge #1: Under Glass

Aug 6, 2016

    1. Challenge #1: Under Glass

This is the first of three feats of skill on the road to winning one of three fabulous rewards as announced HERE.

One of the best things about ball-jointed dolls is that they are sculpted with such care that they can be displayed nude and still be a work of art. We challenge you to make a transparent outfit for your doll. You may use a variety of materials - we always encourage the use of non-traditional and recycled materials - but they must allow the doll's body to remain visible.

      Description

Make a transparent outfit for your doll

      • Your outfit can be any style but must cover your doll's torso at minimum.
      • Your outfit can be made from any materials, synthetic or natural.
      • Your doll must still be able to move limbs while dressed.
      • Your outfit must be removable. (no sticking clear tape or cling film directly to your doll)
      • Your outfit must be primarily transparent (at least 75%)

      Materials:

      • Any repurposed and recycled goods, plus $20 of purchased necessities. You may cut up your own household items or clothing, you may dumpster dive, you may drink a liter of water just to get the plastic, and you may find that you don't need to spend very much money at all.
      • Basic tools and adhesives like scissors or other cutting blades, non-decorative tape and glue, needle and thread, etc. are not counted as part of your materials.
      • Your $20 budget cannot be rolled over into the next challenge if you do not spend it.

Repurposed vs Purchased Goods: After you've exhausted your craft stash, scrounged around your house, looked through your back yard, combed the streets for usable materials, failed to beg some recycling from your neighbor's garage hoard, and you still don't have what you need, necessitating that you must go and buy something, those are the things that come out of your budget. The smartest competitors would look around, scrounge with all their might and not buy a thing and turn out something amazing. That way they can have a chance at a prize with no monetary input of their own. The second smartest would make something amazing with found parts plus a small part of their budget spent. We want to encourage contestants to consume as little brand new materials as possible.

If you have any questions about materials that may link you to your entry, please post in Ask the Moderators so that you do not accidentally disqualify yourself from the contest!

      Rules

      1. Each member may submit one entry.
      2. The outfit must have been created specifically for this contest.
      3. Minimal use of photo editing, please. We want to be impressed by your creation, not your amazing use of Photoshop.
      4. Outfits must be modeled on on-topic dolls.
      5. No posting entries or other photos that are recognizably from the same photo shoot until after the Triathlon is closed. Describing your in-process or finished outfit or posting pictures before the end of the contest (whether on DoA or on outside blogs, forums, etc.) will result in disqualification.

Who May Compete for the Prizes?

This contest is open to all members who have joined on or before the date of June 30th, 2016.
Participants must be members in good standing. Members may not participate if they have a marketplace suspension, marketplace ban, unresolved transactions or a paging status.
Do not accept the prize if you do not intend to keep it. It is unsportsmanlike to sell the prize after receiving it and anyone found doing this will receive a Marketplace suspension and be barred from future contests. Select "I am NOT competing for the prize" on your submission form if you do not intend to keep the prize.

      Entering for Fun

It is possible to participate just for fun, without competing for the prizes. Select "I am NOT competing for the prize" on your entry submissions. Entries will be displayed along with the competing entries, but will not appear on the voting forms.
Current Den of Angels staff may participate, but are not eligible for prizes.
Members who have won prizes in past Triathlon contests may participate for fun, but they are not eligible for a prize in this contest.
Recast supporters may participate for fun using on-topic dolls, but they are not eligible for the prizes from these donors.
If you have a question about your eligibility, please post in Ask the Moderators.

IMPORTANT: Describing your entries, posting photos, revealing your alias, or soliciting votes (either on DoA or on offsite blogs or forums) before the contest has closed will result in disqualification.

      Submission

You will need to provide the following photos:
      1. a front view of your doll standing wearing the outfit
      2. a back view of your doll standing wearing the outfit
      3. a collage image showing notable details
      4. a photo of recycled materials used (before use)
      5. a photo of purchased materials used (before use)
      6. a photo of receipts for purchased materials (if you have a photo #5 you must have a photo #6)
      7. a style shot of the completed outfit showing the transparency feature and the doll posing naturally

Photos must be submitted in JPEG format, 600 pixels on the longest side. Oversized photos or photos sent in the wrong format will disqualify your entry.

Entries will be submitted directly to the moderators using the entry form link below.
Do not PM the moderators with your entry; this form is the only way to enter.

      ENTRIES ARE NOW CLOSED

      Important Dates

Deadline for entries is Saturday August 13th 11:59pm EDT.
If you're unsure of your local time, please check this COUNTDOWN CLOCK. Entries received after this time will be disregarded.

      Voting Period: Monday, August 15th 12pm - Saturday, August 20th 11:59pm EDT

      Voting, Points and Prizes

This is the first task in the quest for the Triathlon prizes. Please remember that you must complete all three challenges in order to qualify for a prize. You may join for fun at any time, but you can only win if you have participated in all three challenges.

      • Votes will be submitted and tallied privately. The totals will be made available upon completion of voting for each challenge.
      • Entries will be posted without the entrants' names to try to avoid this being a popularity contest. For this reason, we must stress that identifying your entry to others will lead to disqualification.
      • We will also be employing the same codename system as in past years - pick a good secret identity for this year's contest! You may not use the same code name you used in past contests.

Members will have four vote points to distribute to four different entries based on the following criteria:

      • Craftsmanship and attention to detail
      • Artful use of transparency
      • Creative use of materials
      • Aesthetic appeal

      VOTING IS NOW OPEN!

    2. Me and my points of clarification I swear. When you say doll must be able to move limbs while dressed. are you wanting a full range of motion or is a limited range ok? I guess I'm asking where the line is for limb movement, because I have a couple ideas, and my favorite would partially restrict limb movement, though the other would not.
If the mods want more details I'll happily describe my thinking/plan in ask the moderators, I just felt I wouldn't be the only one wondering where that line was so it may be useful to ask publicly. :) thanks again! I'm so excited to participate!

    3. The range of motion can be limited. We just don't want to see dolls encased in glue or wearing a box. It still needs to find function as clothing, but if you can imagine your doll walking a runway in it, that's good enough. They don't need to be able to do yoga!

    4. First, I really love the idea of the challenge and what I like even more is that we may use and repurpose old items. I'm sure most of us have plenty of stuff waiting to be transformed into something fabulous already at home ^______^

Second, what about shoes? If our doll wears shoes in the final pictures do they have to be made of transparent materials as well or may we use pre-bought (or made) normal shoes?

    5. Never mind posting in ask moderators...

    6. Very inspiring challenge! There are so many possibilities to dig into this.
I also have a few questions:
      - Can the transparency have colors?
      - Does 75% transparency include a mix of transparent and non-transparent materials? (would a shirt with like 80% of holes in in count as transparent?)
-Does the outfit have to be "permanent" or it okay if it only lasts long enough for the photos?
      - How about underwear? A mostly transparent outfit on a completely nude doll might look weird …

      • x 1
    7. Does lace fabric count as transparent?

      • x 1
    8. Im just brain storming ideas and wanted to ask if i wanted to and color to a part of my outfit and I used old markers or paint I've had for ages would I count them as part of my cost. And if I did how could I supply proof on how much a paid for the item.

    9. And another question.
Do we really have to use one of our oldest dolls or is a doll that has been with us for at least 2-3 years already old enough?

    10. I didn't see anywhere that we had to use our oldest doll. Is that true?

    11. Cinderella's glass slippers are a classic example of transparent clothing, but they are not required. You may create shoes or you may use shoes you already own. If you use ready-made shoes, they should only appear in the style shot.

      Yes
      Yes
It will need to survive until the end of the month.
Styling is up to you, but you'll need to make any undergarments the doll wears.

As long as you can see through it to the body underneath, it can be used.

If it's already in your possession, it counts as repurposed/recycled materials. You only need to document purchases you make this week.

The age of the doll doesn't matter, just your ability to think creatively about it. :)

    12. Thank you for clarifying the questions :) @St. James
Guess then I'm ready to start then, I already took the picture of the to be recycled materials and now I'm ready for crafting.

    13. Yeah, so excited! I can hardly wait to get started now! Thanks everyone for asking questions so I didn't have to XD

      • x 2
    14. Can we use embelisments that are not completely clear?

      • x 1
    15. Thank you for the clarification, I'm looking forward to this contest. :)

      • Cake Cake x 1
    16. Can the doll be sewn or fabric glued into the outfit?

    17. Thank you for thinking of this awesome theme, guys!
Been trying out materials all day and feeling both inspired and challenged in the best possible way <3

      • Cake Cake x 1
    18. What kind of closures are allowable? Would clear tape be OK as long as the garment is removable and not sticking to the doll itself, or does there need to be a more "legitimate" closure?

As for covering the torso, can any midriff be exposed?

    19. Is the theme focusing on transparency that "allows visibility of the body" or transparency of materials. I am wondering if there will be points taken off if transparent materials are layered such that the figure underneath are no longer clearly visible.

    20. Do we have to register first? or just do the entry when we are all done?

      • x 1
    21. You enter once your all done! You need your photos to officially enter! :) good luck!

      • x 1
    22. Can the picture of our recycled and repurposed materials be a collage. In case I decided to add or not use some meterials later this week?

    23. Yes, as long as your outfit is primarily transparent, you can embellish it however you like.

Yes, but you might regret that choice later this month.

      Clear tape is fine.
You might want to discuss your design questions in Ask the Moderators.

The purpose is body visibility, not the transparency of the materials. It's entirely possible to make an outfit about transparency using non-transparent materials.

      Yes! :)

    24. Thank you St. James! All your answers are extremely helpful!

    25. How much of the torso needs to be covered? Are you looking for full coverage like a corset or are we allowed to use a crop top?

    26. Just to check - do items I already have in my craft stash but are not previously used count as "recycled" for inclusion in photo 4?

    27. Omg i lost one of my photos of my recycled materials and it makes up alot of my outfit. I have no more of it to take a new picture what do i do!
I have a tiny piece but you cant tell what it is

    28. I don't know who thought up this challenge but it is truly devious! After this first attempt, more thought is needed....

    29. Are you allowed to enter for prizes if you don't yet have access to the marketplace? I haven't been suspended or banned. I just haven't made 40 posts yet, so I don't yet qualify for the marketplace.

    30. I believe so. I saw that answered in the first post made about the events.

    31. The ask the mods isn't working so I hope this question isn't too specific. I know that the rules say that the outfit must at least cover the torso but would it be alright to have an open shirt-like piece or does it have to completely cover the chest?

    32. I asked a very similar question and got the green light ☺️

    33. Thank you

    34. Do things like buttons/snaps/velcro or other fasteners need to be included in our supply pics?

    35. Really can't wait to see everyone else's interpretations of this theme, everyone usually takes these things in such disparate directions!

Mine's progressing - but I'm horribly aware I need to be done by Friday morning myself, so I suspect my entry will be more for the fun of it than anything else!

      • x 1
    36. All these questions are baiting my curiosity too!! I absolutely cannot wait to see everyone's interpretation!! Fight on guys!

    37. YEAH WOOO!!!! Here we go... getting stared tonight! I'm so excited!

    38. So I don't know if I'm just completely technologically inept, or if this is just an oversight issue that other people are running into as well.
I finished my outfit and the photoshoot today, and I'm trying to submit the pictures. But the submission form requires image URLs, a problem since we're not supposed to post the images elsewhere online or risk disqualification. I did a test post after marking an unrelated picture as private on flickr, and the link was broken cause of the picture being private and I'm sure the same will happen if I submit images like that through the form. I'm really stumped as to what to do here? Computers are not my strong suit (obviously), but I'm really proud of the entry I made and would be devastated if this issue kept me from entering... If anyone could help I would be hugely appreciative...

      • x 1
    39. @fairithilien, if you click the "download" option on Flickr and pick "all sizes," you can do a right-click to get the direct URL of the image shown there (just pick the one that matches the requirements in the form). Then you can paste that! It's how I entered two years ago when I decided to give the triathlon a shot. It gave me a lot of appreciation for all the people who go through it every year, so I was sure to vote last year (and will again this year)!

      • x 1
    40. you could also host your photos in a private album on imgur. That's what I use ^^

      • x 1
    41. I'm a bit confused...If we already have materials in our home do we have to spend money? :huh?: Is the $20 just the budget if we do choose to spend money?

    42. You don't have to spend money! You're actually encouraged not to! The budget is really just for people who cant find the materials they want for free so that they would be left with the short end of the stick if they can't find anything.

    43. Ahhh ok thanks so much!! :dance

    44. No worries. It's a nice touch, doesn't give us hoarders too unfair of an advantage =P

    45. Does any fabric (other than lace) qualify as transparent? I was mainly wondering about organza or tulle as I know how to work they a touch better than plastic.

    46. My [recycled item] turned out to made of a poorer quality type of the [material] I need, that didn't hold up to being used in the way I needed it, and now I need to find a new secondhand [item] to cut up. Aaa! There's always setbacks though. Anybody else who's gotta redo some stuff, you have my commiseration, and we can do this!!

    47. If you can see through it counts. Im pretty sure:)

    48. To give you a bit more detail, this is my entry for the visual concepts contest back in 2013 (I'm using it as an example because it's still set to private).

The flickr page is 'https://www.flickr.com/photos/tidenthyme/9572866278' and if anyone else clicks on that link they should get nowhere because of the privacy.

If I click on the curly arrow at the bottom of the picture and choose "share" I get a link https://www.flickr.com/gp/tidenthyme/32qgf8 which you should be able to see, but it's still not a direct link to the picture.

But if I choose BBCode which is how I usually get the code to post in forums I get something that looks like [ url=https://flic.kr/p/fzVrCA][ img ]https://c7.staticflickr.com/4/3808/9572866278_5bf9a4e29b_z.jpg[ / img ][/ url ][ url=https://flic.kr/p/fzVrCA]hero resized[/ url ] by [ url=Tide N Thyme ]Tide N Thyme[ /url ], on Flickr
(I have added extra spaces so it doesn't just post the picture).

The bit that is the actual link to the picture as opposed to the link to the flickr page (and again with extra spaces) is [ img ]https://c7.staticflickr.com/4/3808/9572866278_5bf9a4e29b_z.jpg[ / img ] and if I post that without the extra spaces it gives the picture -
      [IMG]

So if I remove the code, the direct link to the picture is https://c7.staticflickr.com/4/3808/9572866278_5bf9a4e29b_z.jpg and you should be able to follow that link without the privacy being a concern.

      Hope that helps!

    49. Thank you all for helping! I had a friend suggest making a private tumblr post and getting the urls from there, and I tested it with a small unrelated image post and it worked wonderfully without being very complicated, so I did that. Fingers crossed the mods got my entry safe and sound. :)

    50. I'm worried I'm not going to get my entry done in time. I have so much recycled stuff I could use... but my ideas are all over the place. lol. I made a part of it last night (finished in the early hours of this morning), but now I'm not sure if I should take a picture of all the stuff I'm thinking about using and then get to work..... or plan stuff out and take pictures and then put it together. But I tend to do better when I experiment. I'm just super worried I'll forget to take a picture of something XD

    51. I just took a picture of just about everything I was considering using. Maybe group them into sections based on your ideas so worst case you can crop out what you didn't use?
And I'm sure you can get it finished on time!! You've got this!

    52. Yes! :)

      Yes! :)

Please try to include the notions in the description of your materials if you don't photograph them.

As for the other questions, either I've already answered them via Ask the Mods or they've been answered correctly by another member, but I do want to mention several points:

      1. When asking questions about the anniversary events, please use the Contests prefix in Ask the Moderators so your question doesn't get buried! That will ensure you get a speedy answer.
      2. When submitting your entry photos, make sure it is just the URL ending in .jpg. If you paste in the URL surrounded by [ img ] or tags it means the moderator who is processing the entry photos has to do a lot of cleanup to make your image visible. Not fun when there are so many images!
      3. There have been tons of questions about what part has to be covered or uncovered. Imagine that your outfit design is a bubble. That bubble must enclose the doll's torso at minimum but can encompass the entire doll if you choose to design something with more surface area. 75% of that surface area must be transparent enough to see the doll underneath, but it doesn't matter which parts of the doll are visible. A classic example of an ensemble that fits the brief would be a high-collared floor-length Chantilly lace negligee with panties and a bra underneath. The entire body is covered by transparent lace but most of the body is visible with a very small percentage of opaque fabric in use.
      4. We will not disqualify anyone who doesn't meet the brief, it just means that your entry probably won't get very many votes because it either isn't transparent enough or doesn't cover enough of the doll. It is up to the voters to decide which design most successfully meets the requirements of the challenge.

      Carry on! :sumomo:

    53. another question I just thought about and havent seen posted.... if we have something that wasnt meant for bjd use that is transparent... can we use it on our doll if say it was originally meant for a stuffed animal or pet in the same manner? I was thinking mostly for the style shot and not necessarily as an aspect of what I'm making.... but I wasnt sure since I'm not cutting it up and can put it on the doll in the way I want since it was basically made for that purpose but meant for pets/stuffed animals to wear.

    54. You can repurpose anything you have, you just might not get many points for creative use of materials.

    55. Okay thanks :) Not sure if I'm using it yet...not quite the right color since I found something else I forgot I had. lol.

    56. Also, a little inspiration:

This guy is waiting for you at the finish line!

      • x 6
    57. wait, about posting the images anywhere... does imgurl count? since they're not gonna be tagged with anything, I highly doubt anyone will see an image posted there or associate it with the contest...right? /is guilty of having sent the entry with links to imgurl images without thinking about the "no sharing" rule

    58. Your host album must be set to private. If you post your images anywhere they are publicly available for viewing, whether or not you think anyone will find them, your entry will be disqualified from competing for prizes.

    59. oh no i think i messed up my links :O is there a way i can see if my links worked?

    60. If you have concerns about your specific entry, please post in Ask the Moderators using the Contests prefix. Thanks! :)
