The first BJD you ever wanted vs the first BJD you got.

Aug 28, 2010

    1. I've always wanted a Fairyland doll but I ended up picking a LUTS doll and I absolutely love her! She fit my budget a lot better and she's a great doll.

    2. The first doll I ever wanted was the one I got!

My first doll was a Unoa Lusis. I was fifteen and happened to run into an old blog featuring someone’s collection. I remember being in shock when I found out the doll’s box wasn’t in fact wood like those grainy pics I idolized. I wasn’t allowed to get a job outside the home so I sold art commissions for a year. It was also extremely hard for American buyers to obtain Unoa back then. I had to win a yjp auction from some third party site...Crescent something. I ended up winning the auction of a 2003 edition Lusis!

i paid out the nose for this doll, triple what it sells for now but you know I wanted her so bad and I couldn’t fly to Japan. :sweat When I received her, she was in really bad shape. Her insides were caked in filth and her faceup had been done with what looked like human makeup! Not exactly a great start. I admit I cried, a lot. But I spent my summer cleaning her and she became my muse.

I would honestly still have that doll if my family didn’t fall on rough times. I sold her to a (then) well known collector who sadly passed away. I hope Lusis went to a good home after that.

    3. The first doll I ever wanted was a Dream of Doll Ducan--I remember stumbling across him somewhere on the internet, and I thought he was just the coolest thing. Wound up getting a Resinsoul Feng as my first doll, though, and honestly, I adore the dude.
I've got very different tastes nowadays, and while I'm still fond of Ducan, I'm not as head over heels about him as I was back in the early 2000s. If I ever got the chance to pick him up, though? I'd probably do it for nostalgia's sake.

    4. The first BJD I ever saw (on the internet) was a Volks Four Sisters--I can't remember which one, but I do remember thinking, wow I wouldn't be able to handle a doll that big! Then I discovered Mini's and legit made plans to get a Volks MSD Sakura back when they sold them in kits that you could put together yourself.

I ended up getting a Dream of Doll Bee-A for my first doll and I still LOVE her! My aesthetic for dolls is so different now that I probably wouldn't get a Sakura even if she showed up on the Marketplace though.

    6. The first doll that I really wanted to buy was a minifee I saw on somebodys video. I kept going back to that video everyday before I really started to look at the fairyland site. Even then I waited more before purchasing my lillycat. Do I have a minifee now? Nope, but I don't think I'll be getting one in the end.

    7. I got the first one I wanted! I fell in love with ResinSoul Mei. My husband encouraged me to buy her same day, he said he'd never seen my eyes sparkle like that for something material before, I'm such an experience person and spending money makes me anxious. I definitely don't regret it! Three years later I'm up to five dolls and have a second ResinSoul!

    9. My introduction to BJDs was when a friend bought a doll from Dream of Doll in like, 2009. At the time I wanted Twing-key so, so badly. I saved up for months to be able to afford her, but the person who was going to order her for me (as he had a credit card and I didn't) changed his mind and wasn't willing to buy her for me.

So I kinda gave up for a long time.

The first doll I actually got was for my birthday a few years back: a Doll Leaves Ida! While I think my tastes in dolls have changed a lot since I was a young teenager (I thirst after pretty much everything Doll Chateau has ever put out), I still love her a lot and I'm glad that I have her.

    10. My first BJD that I almost bought last 2016 is migidoll miho, I remember I am gead over heels with him. That time I only knew about young/baby faced bjds.

I taught of buying him straight from migidoll that time but something helding me back (mostly the price ) so I stepped back.

After sometime that is when I learned about realistic sculpts the likes of dollshe and iplehouse and right there I know that realistic sculpts are more satisfying.

Fast forward this year when I really decided to join the bandwagon and got what I really love, Dollshe and Iplehouse. It's a great ending for a 4 years of undeniably battling with myself on should I get it or not, endless wondering of what ifs, looking at pictures salivating with those gorgeous dolls and wishing to own one.

Truly having been able to buy what you really wanted with value is morethan satisfying .

    11. The first doll I really wanted was Iplehouse Claude (because really I wanted to shell Ares from Devil Maker Tokyo and he would be perfect :chibi).

The first doll I actually got was my Elfdoll Sooah (Hazuki). Totally an impulse buy but she somehow worked out for a character I had.

I still kinda want to get Claude to make Ares (because I had a mad crush on Shoong’s art) but I might work on my own characters first.

    13. The first doll I fell head over heels for was Dollfie Dream Beatrice from Umineko no Naku Koro ni I was just getting into visual novels when I got into Higurashi and Umineko. When I saw that ornate doll of Beatrice, it was all over! I loved it! Not technically a BJD, as she isn't strung, but she got me into dolls as a whole.
My first BJD was a Resinsoul An! I mostly got him because he was affordable and I wanted to be able to experiment. I didn't really bond with him unfortunately and I don't have him anymore. I'm glad I started with him though, I learned a lot about the hobby from having him!

    14. The first ever doll I wanted was a dream of doll Shall but the first doll I got was a supia Hael. I think I connected more with the supia style dolls. I also wasn’t able to find a ‘real life’ picture of Shall that inspired a character in the end. I still thought she was pretty though.

    16. This year I started exploring BJDs again, as I'm older and have my own money now. I dont remember what I used to want, but somewhere along my searching earlier this year I spotted the Rudy doll, by souldoll. I fell in love. Now, I'd been looking for about a month at BJDs contemplating which doll I wanted to get and I just loved her face, body, and shoes (yes I know weird thing to hyper focus on but what can I say). About a month later I finally decided on just getting her. So my first love was Rudy, and she'll be my first doll once I finish layaway.

    17. Dollstown definitely struck me with their realistic sculpts and got me in to the hobby. Being such a large doll, I found a bit intimidating as well as cost. I started out with the tinies. Latidoll yellows were my first bjds, I only have one yellow now. I then ventured to larger YOSD sized that I have since sold followed by Msds. I have finally managed to order a dollstown 18yr girl body recently for my Soi head (which was the very first doll that got me in to the hobby and somewhat of a grail). I really don’t know What I will think size wise once her body arrives but I never would have imagined owning her ☺️.

    18. The first BJD I ever wanted is kinda a tough question?? Like, the first BJD I ever saw I didn't necessarily want, it was an MYou Verna. After looking through their website, I really loved Zuzana's face! So She was technically the first BJD that I wanted, but then I took a two year hiatus from BJD related things. What jump started me into the hobby was seeing a Doll Chateau Barbara, and I fell in LOOOOVVVEEE, she was so beautiful, and not like anything I have ever seen before. So if someone asks me, I'll tell them that the first BJD I ever wanted was her, because she made me want to join the hobby to just have her!
THAT BEING SAID! My first BJD I've ever owned is Doll Chateau Katherine! I funnily enough have a MYou Zuzana on the way, and I have DC Barbara on layaway... so it worked out in the end!

    19. The first doll I ever wanted……hmmm….I can’t even remember when and where I saw the post of the dolls but it was a made to order mold that can look like your favorite jrock band. I saw a photo of a doll that looked like the Gazette boys and fell in love. At that time the prices were way out of my comprehension ( not understanding why they were so expensive and who buys these dolls and what for). But now looking back, that price was a great deal! I definitely regretted never buying one. I strayed and bjds didn’t cross my mind since 2007 until now. I saw a photo someone posted, in a home decorating community, of their dolls that I thought definitely made her office looked beautiful and with characters and yess fell back in love with bjds again. They were definitely handsome boys and resembled kpop idols. Hehe
I couldn’t let this time around pass me by! For some reason I find the bigger dolls to my liking. My first doll (which I should meet in a week from now) is about 63-65cm. I can’t wait to get him. I’m super excited and yeah I can’t even sleep waiting for his arrival.

    20. Hard one, I really can't remember for sure. I ventured into BJD hobby around 2009-2010. I remember first BJDs I saw were Dream of Dolls, but I can't remember if I really wanted one. Probably I would have been wanting one of their bigger SD boys. First doll I ever got was Dollzone Megi, after that I ventured into SD size. One of my grail dolls back then was Dollmore Thinking Larme, which I got. I am little bit sad now that I sold him, because he is limited edition. Unfortunately I don't have any of my dolls from those days anymore.

    21. Like many people here, the first doll company i ever came across, back in 2010, was Dream of Doll. I fell in love with Homme Ducan, but as i was still a teenager with only a summer job income, I couldn't afford him. I eventually came across Bobobie and fell hard for Apollo, so that was my first doll!

I never gave up on my dream of having a Ducan though, and now I have him too thanks to the second hand market.

    22. I had really wanted a Myou Delia when I first discovered bjds. But when I finally came time to purchase my first doll, I wasn't sure about ordering through email and the only dealer I knew about at the time was Denver Doll, who doesn't carry Myou.

So, I ended up with a Doll Leaves Betty instead as my first doll (who is still a lovely sculpt.) I might still get a Myou Delia one day, though.

    23. I fell in love with Souldoll's Lily C back in middle school. She was long discontinued by the time I had funds to order my first doll, but in my opinion MYOU Delia looks quite similar - and she was my first! she's also better at posing than my souldoll girl, so I think she was a very good choice.

    24. Back in the day, I half wanted a D.O.T. Shall. Either the normal Shall or the Tender version. I quite liked the Camine too, but I prefer girls and if it came down to only one, it would have been a Shall (I also was not aware that other companies existed apart from D.O.D., which explain the limited selection XD). But, I knew I didn't have enough money as a very young teen, so I didn't even entertain that thought for very long. I remember briefly trying to sculpt one, though and giving up very fast. I haven't done any further research.

Fast-forward to 2020 and I fell in love with the Maskcat Yaël and she is my first doll!

There is definitely a few similarities between the two sculpts: two women, SDs, about the same size, not too realistic, with a calm and serene expression (to me).

I guess my tastes haven't changed that much in 15 years or so? XD

Yet I don't regret having waited. I would not have been financially responsible at 14. I currently don't want a Shall because they are too "anime-ish" for my current tastes (and I don't really like the bodies). My tastes may not have changed much, but that subtle difference is enough to orient my choices, and when it comes to BJDs and their cost, it's not negligible. XD

    25. When I first started I didn't have any friends in the hobby accept one. And she wasn't all that much of a friend. She only told me of 3 websites which was Dollzone, D.O.D, and Bobobie. So I originally wanted to buy a D.O.D Duncan. But my mother was like. This site is super sketchy and I don't like him. Find something else. Which she didn't know any better and neither did I. She thought it was a scam.

Anyway I was on Dollzone looking at dolls and when I saw the dollzone floy I instantly fell in love. I knew he was meant for me! Looking back at it now and seeing my current style with dolls. I dont actually no why I liked Duncan at all. Lololol

I still own my DZ Floy. He is turning 10 at the end of August. It will be my 10 year dollie anniversary as well!

    26. When I first found out about bjd I fell in love with Lati Yellow but when I started in the hobby my first purchase was an iplehouse b.i.d. Then I couldn’t stand waiting and found a Lati Yellow in stock so in the end the first bjd I received was the first one I ever wanted.

    27. I dont remember the first bjd i saw and wanted. BUt i remember the first one i tried to save up for!
A dollzone Jeremy, I was just so amazed by him. He was one of the first fantasy dolls i saw and i thought that was awsome. So i went to saving up bc little naive me thought all dolls where permanently availble.... When i went to relook at the listing and it was "sold out". I was so upset lol.
Some time passed and i think both due to popularity back then and just me thinking he was cool, i fell in love with Migidoll Ell. I then went on to save up for him and in the meantime i also joined some secondhand groups on FB.

Thats when i found a head. It was love at first sight, a Vanidoll Zoe. Ive never seen it before, and then i saw teh seller was also located in the same country as me. Back then ive never bought anything online and since it was in the same country i asked the seller if i could come pcik it up and give them the money in cash. To this day i have no idea why but the seller agreed. So my granpa gave me a 2 hour ride (wich here in europe is considerd long), The person gave me the head, i gave the money, drove another 2 hour home... And i finally had my very first bjd head! I was so exited and kept showing it to my family and my plans in the future.

In the week i got the head i also went on to look at bodys and saw the same seller was listing a body that would fit the head. SO i showed my family and told themi was gonna save up for it (i was 15 back then with no job and had a monthly allowence of 25 euro, the body was 300euro lol).
My granpa, whos know as a very grumpy man told me he was gonna give it to me as a present... So i sent the person again, that i wish to come pick up the body and again give the money in cash (i had no bank acc let alone a paypal) and they agreed again???
So after another 4 hour on the road i finally had my compleat doll! The seller even gave me some extras (Pants, shirts, underwear).

Its now been almost 6 years (next month its the 6 year aniversary actually lol)
And i still have the head! I came to learn its an artist head and its super rare (ive only seen like 3? other ppl with the head)
I sadly sold the body as with now some experience i realised the head and body didnt fit correctly and it posed like garbage. Im still on the hunt for a good body lol.
I also see the seller at cons from time to time so thats fun lol

So I ended up going with Myou Ling Wei and I’m so glad I did. I just love her to bits and I now prefer Myou dolls to Minifees ^^

    30. The very first BJD I really wanted was a DollZone Yuu. Luckily, he wasn't limited, so I saved up and eventually got him some four years later! Woo! I'll unfortunately never get a tan Yuu like I wanted, but that's okay. I also got the DollZone Yage I wanted as my second doll, even if getting her body was a panic purchase because DZ decided to get rid of most of their bodies for a while and go the way of Doll Chateau.

I don't have any pictures easily accessible (I'm at work, lol) but he is my profile picture! As old and awful of a picture as it is... Everyone say "Hi, Genji!"

    32. Oddly the first BJDs I saw were on a forum for The Sims game. I think it was 2010. A discussion thread was for showing your hobbies besides playing The Sims. One person posted pics of her BJDs. I had been collecting other dolls, and had never heard of or seen a BJD. The photo showed several 1/6 size dolls. The one that caught my eye was a 5 Star Doll Amy. A cute little girl with elf ears.

I googled 5 Star Doll and they were having a Summer Event. I hadn't planned to buy a doll, but thought that if I did, it would be Amy. Instead I ended up with !/3 Tumnus, 1/6 Rex and a blank 1/3 Edmund head.
The Edmund head was a free gift with purchase. I had no idea what to do with that floating head. Several times over the years I thought about selling the head. But something always made me change my mind and keep it. I finally turned him into a whole doll 2 years ago. Now "Ivan" (Edmund) is one of my favorite dolls.

    33. My very first doll was a Luts Elf Raven! Although I've been watching the hobby from afar since some time ago and always wondered how they were called, none of them picked my interest as much as the Romance ver. of Raven from last year (SDF65) did!! I didn't know sculpts were limited at that time so even while looking at it, I thought I was going to be able to save enough to get him... Sadly that was not the case when I found out the sale was closed. When I heard a smaller version of him was going to be available I did as much as I could to order him and not miss it for the second time.

    34. The first bjds I saw were in issues of Haute Doll magazine back in 2009. Two articles caught my eye: a photo style article on someone’s Elfdoll Rainy Girls and one about Dollshe Bermanns and Haute Hounds. There was also an enchanting Volks ad with a Johanna.

I had no idea about limited dolls and that Dollshe vowed he’d never release Bermanns again. Then I found out how much the dolls cost and started researching the least expensive doll I could find with a sculpt I liked.

My first purchase was a B&G Rin. I still love this guy and his happy face. Over the years, I’ve picked up a secondhand Soah, the re-released Hound and Grown Bermann. Plus, a few others. :3nodding:

Years later looking for Dal dolls I found Crobidoll and fall in love with a custom doll, dont remember the mold but it was a blonde SD boy with green eyes... remind me kind of Tei, but it was an other mold (2013) and a year latter I bought my first bjd a Kid Delf Darae from Luts

    36. The first I saw and immediately fell in love with was DOD Ducan. Such a common answer I know I know!! Something about those eyes stole every girl's heart back then.

The first I bought was DOD Black Elf Sha. My mom did not like Ducan's eyes at all and as a teen I was heavily influenced by her opinion. I got some serious FOMO about limited DOD dolls even though I had pretty much decided on Petsha and went for BES anyway. I don't regret the choice I made but it wasn't the choice I should have made  None of the three are my current taste so it doesn't matter anymore that I didn't get the one I liked most back then.

    37. It's not necessarily the first doll I ever saw (I never did find out what sculpt that one was) but the first BJD I really wanted to buy for myself was Little Monica Bear. His sculpt is just so soft and cute, I honestly thought it was the prettiest doll I'd ever seen :XD: I was only into off-topic playscale dolls at that time though, and the size of a 1/4 doll intimidated me, so I decided against getting him and decided to just admire from afar.

I ended up scrolling through Little Monica's website and came across their mature 1/6 line and had planned to save for one of those instead, but I also decided against that a year or two later when I discovered Minifees and looked through the head sculpts available in their a-la-carte system.
At that point I was really invested in my original characters (mainly through illustration) and realized Fairyland had a sculpt that was perfect for one of them -- Minifee Kyle -- so I decided to save up for the head and body (with faceup, but no wig or clothes) through the a-la-carte system. I had to really convince myself that 1/4 wasn't "too big for me", but I've ended up liking 1/4 scale a lot more than 1/6. It's like the perfect sweet spot between really big and really small.

I turned the Kyle into my character Risel and I'm really glad this was the doll I purchased as my first, as I'm super happy with it! She's actually the doll in my profile image right now.

Lately I've lost interest in DC (probably cuz the bodies are hard to sew for and fiddly :doh) and my FL interest has exploded. Kinda tempted to get a Chloe afterall ;)

Later I did obtain a Heliot head and hooves, but not at the same time. Now that Soom did its anniversary release, I was finally able to get unicorn Heliot, in one of my favorite colours.

      Thirteen years.

He released while I was making the decision of which first doll I wanted to get, so he was discounted for an event, which made him much more affordable. That comboed with the fact that I found him absolutely precious and had one of the looks I was wanting made him my choice for my first doll. I got a job as soon as I turned 16 (the age you're legally allowed to work here) and saved up my first paychecks and bought him as soon as I had enough. His name is Finley, and I still think of him as my "first born" and love him lots.

I did end up getting an Island Doll LE., who I named Auden (my namesake on here), at a later point, though. He was a bit expensive for me at the time, but Island Doll had a Christmas event that year that gave you a FREE 26 cm doll with the purchase of a 65+cm doll, and that was too great a deal to pass up. So I got him and Island Doll Honey at the same time.

    44. The first doll I ever wanted was Soom Sabik.
The first doll I ordered is not the same doll that arrived first, but the first one to reach home was Impldoll Sicily, and then two more girls. So yeah, my taste has changed since then haha. I still think that Sabik was cool, but I think I don't have a chance to get him anymore.

    45. Luts Lemon and Dollzone Megi were one of my first doll crushes ever. I was even about to buy Luts Lemon back in the days. I'm so glad I didn't since I was literally a kid back then. I also remember wanting to buy some of Soom's Teenie Gem dolls. That's also something I'm glad I didn't do, since young dolls are not to my taste any longer.

I, however, ended up getting Dollzone Megi as my first doll years after seeing him on a Finnish forum. That makes me nostalgic in a great way. I adored him after all these years.

    48. First bjd I ever wanted was a FL Minifee Sia, but then I realised how much she'd cost and then I discovered Resinsoul. My heart exploded when my very first bjd, a Resinsoul Rong in grey; which I named Meika arrived. She was what started my entire collection and I'm so glad she did.

    49. Super-broke me back then wanted a 60cm Luts (Cerberus Project) El, plus sleeping head.

Super-broke me got a Bobobie Apollo, who I will probably never get rid of because he’s got so much sentimental value~ :)

    50. What was the first bjd you ever wanted?
I saw a Volks Shinku and wanted one, but she is way before I got into bjds or knew about bjds.

Was it the doll that ended up being your first?

      No

Did you or didn't you ever get that doll you originally wanted? (and if not then what made you decide that?)

No, my first doll is Rosen Lied holiday's child. I don't know maybe I will buy it. I am not comfortable with second hand dolls yet. I don't want to make the effort right now to go looking for one.

    51. The first BJD I ever wanted was a Dollfie Dream Yukino Version 2. I loved her melancholic expression :love
Of course, I was around 10 at the time... It was a big no from my parents when I asked :sweat A couple years later I got a Bobobie Sprite from junkyspot for Christmas though :D I still have her and eventually got Yukino with my own money a few years later~

    52. Doll Chateau Gladys! She was so elegant and otherworldly. But I was clueless at the time so I gave up :sweat
Then I discovered Maskcat and I fell in love, ordered a Yael who is now my beloved Mina.
I still want a DC Youth body and I might hybrid if I find a suitable head (namely another run of Unicorn Beetle, please Coral Reef!)

    53. I admired a lot of dolls for a while, but the first ever doll I wanted was a Granado msd (32adagio2) but I kept missing the various releases and I wasn’t sure if I was committed to spending bjd money.

The first doll I bought was a Telesthesia and Dragon 1/4 special boy (Mu YunJun head). I was worried about his size (50cm) but he was too gorgeous to not buy.

I’m potentially interested in buying a Granado msd in the future, but I doubt I’ll get a tiny since I’d need a whole new wardrobe for them and they wouldn’t photograph as nicely with my existing dolls.

    54. The first specific BJD I can remember wanting is Doll Chateau Pluto... I can still remember seeing her and Charon for the first time, on my phone during a car ride...

I was in middle school, so I didn't even bother asking my mom for a $500+ naked doll, but still! :sweat

I continued to admire BJDs, though. Last summer I got my first Dollfie Dream, and my 21st birthday, around this time last year, I got my first resin as a gift from my brother, Minifee Honoka! :whee:

It took me a very long time to decide on a character/appearance for her, so she is still yet to be painted and I need to make her a new wig, but overall I'm very glad to have her and excited to work on the non-faceup aspects of her over the winter.

I still like animalesqe fantasy dolls, and I'd like to get one some day, but I also really fell in love with the Honoka face sculpt, and knew she was about to be discontinued, so I kind of asked for her on an impulse.

    57. The first BJD doll I ever saw, wanted and fell in love with was Soom Gluino. The vampire one in particular. No longer sold, way out of my price range on the second hand market, and I felt at the time, way too big for a doll. He was my first and only grail doll.

The first doll I ordered however was Dollzone Carter. Both dolls have nice sharp teeth, but Carter is much smaller, more affordable and also not limited. I fell in love with his adorably dangerous little smile. Can you tall that I like dolls with teeth? lol

I did get Soom Gluino the company rereleased him at the end of 2023, and immediately without any hesitation jumped on the chance to get him. I never stopped wanting him, I just figured I would never get him. I also no longer think 75cm is too big for a doll. :3nodding:

    58. The first doll I saw and really wanted was Dollzone Rory, or the Soom bear. But the first doll I ended up getting (who I still have and love to death) is Angell Studio Gus! Couldn’t have asked for a better first doll
