The Big BJD FAQ - Guide for newcomers

Dec 11, 2021

    1. THE BIG BJD FAQ

Back in 2016 I wrote the Big BJD FAQ, prompted by seeing and answering the same questions again and again that had already plagued me back when I started the hobby in 2008.
It was just a Tumblr post I'd link newcomers to as a kind of beginner guide...or copy and paste out replies from

I updated this now and moved it to a Google Drive file.
It is long, extensive and I tried to really think of all the questions that people regularly ask when they first enter the hobby. It includes questions about Buying, Selling, what BJDs are, Customizing, Socializing and even how to commission something. While it's long, it's also supposed to be used as a starting point for more own research. I still regularly add new things to it, or whenever I stumble upon another common question.

Please have a look at it and feel free to share:

      THE BIG BJD FAQ

      Thanks for reading! :D

    2. It is helpful to have all the basic information in one place. I used the wiki here but still had to research a few terms when I started out.

    8. Thank you everyone, I hope it can help a lot of people entering the hobby!:D

@Amet: To be fair, I do very often just type them out again and again because I'm an idiot...
      I just like helping newbies.

    17. Your guide it so excellent! I was undertaking my own guide to hand out at a presentation I'm giving to a non-BJD doll club the beginning of next month. After reading your guide, I can't imagine creating one that is anywhere near the quality of yours. You offered to allow sharing this with others. Would it be OK for me to hand out printed copies to the club members? I will include your author information and that the information is not to be reused without permission. Is that OK? One other thing I might need to do is add pictures. I will indicate that I've added the pics and include all copyright/source info for any photos. (I was a publishing editor in a previous life, and support creator ownership rights in all instances :-)

    18. Thank you, and I am happy to see the guide shared! Feel free, with the mentioned credit/not to be used without permission blurb.
If you want, you can also generate a QR code to be printed onto the handout, because...the guide is so long, not sure if with images this wouldn't end up being a small novel you have to print and give out to people
I did that here on Instagram, since it's a good way to share a link in places where one can't be shared easily: Login • Instagram
That way people can scan in the code and be straight lead to the original online version as well.

    19. Awesome, Ara!! Thank you SO MUCH <3 <3 <3. Well, I'm afraid the QR code will be outside of the technical capability of my audience. Most of these ladies are "old school" so to respectfully speak. But I will for other uses if the opportunity arises. I will drop a PM with my version for your review, recommendation, and records. Thank you again! You're the best. Lizzy

    42. Thank you so much for this! This is really helpful for people who are trying to figure out decent spaces to buy their dolls secondhand. When I first started collecting I was so lost so I try to pay it forward when I notice someone is new to the hobby and doesn’t know where to look.

    43. I seriously wish I'd found this guide earlier on, because I could have saved myself from several mistakes, and hours of self-questioning on whether I was making a sound choice or not. Thank you so much for putting together such an exhaustive reference, I absolutely appreciate having the overview in areas where I haven't made a mistake I regret yet!
