The Ai : Custom House Boys and Girls

Sep 28, 2004

    1. Yes, Mina was the doll in DollMaster. I don't know where the "St." part of it comes- maybe someone will know (???) I didn't know she had a brother- maybe you mean the boy doll in the movie?

    2. [IMG]

Does anyone have any idea who this girl is? She was an event head, and I put her on one of the $88 old bodies they were selling. I can't remember what this head was called, though. It's very sweet. Sorry about the bad picture.

    3. two of my oldies... Jenna (Choa with mouth modded closed) and Iliana (Ryung). both faceups by the incredible cindy gay. I am still so nuts about Jenna!! All these years later! I wish I had a prayer choa, one of the older ones on the first body. The old customhouse magic seems to be gone... it's very sad.

    4. Beautiful girls! Do you think my girl (see post above) might be a Ryung? I wish I could remember what the sculpt was.

    5. Ryung is an Elfdoll sculpt, not a CH sculpt. Your girl looks like the one who was released at the same time as Hyun, maybe? Was that Ruby?

    6. Thanks- I meant Hyun, not Ryung. But no, it wasn't that, and also not Ruby. I wish I could remember. It was a free event head when I got my Ceebee.

      * * * *
Okay, actually, I just went through the database and she IS Rubi (or Lubi is what she was called by Customhouse). For some reason Ruby with a "y" didn't click, but when I saw the Rubi/Lubi - then I remembered! So...mystery solved! The head I originally received was an Iriya, but then I traded with someone who had gotten the Lubi head.
      :)

    7. CH called them "St. Mina" and "St. Demian" when they were released -- I remember a lot of speculation about why, but I don't think anyone ever got an answer from CH. Maybe because CH wanted to emphasize that their dolls (and even their characters in the movie) were really good, loyal, protective types who cared for their humans? Poor Mina in the movie does get manipulated by the vengeful character who's pulling everyone's strings.

And no, in the movie Mina and Demian aren't related, but I think a lot of us tended to call them brother and sister, because the sculpts are so similar.

That wall of CH dolls in Dollmaster is a thing of unbelievable beauty! I don't even like horror (not that this is a very horrific movie), and I watch it fairly often just so I can freeze-frame the shots of all the dolls and see which ones I recognize.

    8. Ah- I didn't know if there was a "plain" Mina and then a "Saint" Mina. I just love the sculpt so much and was so happy to find one at a price I could afford. It was meant to be!
I love the movie and think it has some interesting points to make about our disposable society. That little girl was a brat to throw her doll out like that. And that wall of dolls.........YUUMMMMMY! I've never freeze-framed it, I'll have to try it.
The life-sized dolls in the rooms...those actually are really creepy.
Interesting if not off-topic to research the Virgin Mary and Kuan Yin in Korean culture, given the statue in the front of the doll factory.

    9. I'm getting a Hyun! He was the first SD sculpt I fell for, and I was really sad when I realized it wasn't possible to buy him any more. So excited! I have two Little Junior heads but he'll be my first SD from the company.

    10. I've read a little about the way Christianity took real hold in Korean culture (in a way that didn't happen in Japan) -- I haven't had the time to follow it up, but I'm sure there's good research out there about the blending/merging/overlapping/tensions among the religious traditions in Korea.

Hooray!!! Hyun is such a great sculpt -- what a way to celebrate all the talk about CH that's been going on in the anniversary forum and here!

    11. Congratulations! These days finding a CH doll that you want takes some doing. You're going to love him!

    12. And he's home!

Now to find a faceup artist. I look forward to having fun with him - he's going to be my first doll with pierced ears, and I'm going to be doing that myself once his face is done.

    13. What a great face! Congratulations! Can't wait to see him all done. :)

    14. Awwwwwww, welcome home!! Does he have a name yet?

    15. Yes, his name is Alex. :) He's going out for his faceup tomorrow!

    16. I got preview pics of Alex's faceup and I'm delighted with it. Can't wait to have him home!

    17. Ohhhh that's gorgeous!

    18. He's wonderful! Who did his face-up, if I may ask?

    19. She goes by Titytetee on here. I have three others painted by her, she does lovely work! :)

    20. [IMG]

      I'm in love. :aheartbea
I did his piercings myself, it was easier than expected!

    21. Oh. My. Gosh. He is stunning. Stunning!! Even though he's an old sculpt, he looks so brand new and fresh! I love what you did with him, solitary agent!

    22. He really is gorgeous and you did a wonderful job on his piercings. There really is something special about the Customhouse dolls.

I love his eyes, what kind are they?

    23. Beautiful eyes! The sparkles give so much life to him.

    24. Thanks, everyone! He came out just as I imagined, I'm so happy with him. His eyes are from Oscar Doll. :)

    25. I'm so excited, there's a "new" CH doll in my collection now!! Lovely Sia with a faceup by Angeltoast. <3
      [IMG]

Sia isn't as old as my Choa, she came on a body with double jointed elbows & nicer hands. But she & Choa have had a body swap so CHoa has the slightly taller more mature body & now they both seem to be getting along just fine. :D
      [IMG]

    26. She's beautiful- congratulations! And your Choa is lovely too.

    27. Congrats on your Sia! She and Choa look so beautiful together. :D

    28. cthulhu, both of your girls are wonderful. I love Angeltoast's work.
      Congrats on your new girl.

    29. I am so happy you got her!!! I saw her and just loved her- I already have a sia by angeltoast otherwise I would have wanted her so badly. I am thrilled to see her!!

    30. :chocoberry for Sher. :) I kept waiting for someone to snap up Sia, to save me from my Angeltoast fascination. :sweat
But I am so glad Sia came to my house. :D Now, with this wig, she's got me sorely tempted to make a "Brave" costume for Halloween...:doh
So glad you all agree! Custome House made some beautiful sculpts.:aheartbea

So when did they make the double jointed elbow bodies? This is info I'd find handy to know.

    31. The Great Body Transition happened between 2006 and 2007 -- it's hard to be more precise, because CH was in a kind of hiatus-stasis for several months in there. They were announcing soon-to-be-released redesigned bodies in early 2006, iirc, and a few Uniques and Limiteds had some of the redesigned body parts in 2006. (My Anniversary Boys Rock from 2006 has new-body hands, though the rest of him is all the original body. The Unique Scarry Baron is also a hybrid of old and new from 2006.)

I don't think the complete new bodies were completely phased in until the very end of 2006 or the beginning of 2007, though. When the new bodies started arriving, it was obvious that CH had changed its resin formula, too; the new-style bodies had toothier, more translucent, and (in NS) pinker resin than the original CH bodies. I owned the Unique Happy Wedding Miya from, hmmmmm, maybe 2007(?) for a while, and her WS resin was soooooooooo paper-white -- very different from the softer ivory-white of the oldstyle CH resin.

All this is subject to my middle-aged memory, needless to say! Correct my mistakes, plz and thankee--

    32. I'm waiting on my first custom house girl!!! I can't wait! Who is your favorite? (I've only ever had fairyland up until now!)

    33. Who are you getting? Did you find her in the marketplace?

    34. I'm so glad you remembered all of this Cynthia!! So probably Sia is from 2007 or after...she's definitely pinker pale NS than Choa's yellowed NS. But in this case both resins seem of a similar recipe as they photograph well together without that glaring difference which can be so annoying. X0
The other thing is the old body is much sturdier, I can trust her to stand alone. WHile the newer body needed hot glue sueding, tight elastic & quite a bit of muttering to stand. I'm sorely tempted to do some sanding on her but will have to decide whether modifying an undocumented doll is a better plan than leaving a pristine undocumented original alone. But, the point is moot until I find myself in a modifying mood! :p

G.G, My favorite CH girl? WHich ever one has been posted most recently! Tho I am partial to the two I have, Choa & Sia. :D

    35. Congrats on your new girl, Cthulhu! Her faceup is lovely.

Alex and I are in Atlanta, getting ready to attend AWA tomorrow.

The brat is trying to steal my chocolates D:

    36. Such a gorgeous boy! Maybe he would be happy with the box when it is empty!

    37. Yes, I definitely think it might make an appearance in a future Valentine's themed photoshoot. :)

    38. The older CH girl body is definitely a sturdy gal and a great poser despite the lack of double-joints and weird cone-boobs. hado is constantly bemoaning that his Choa (on the new body) is always flopping around while my older Sia stands like a champ.
Now here's a dilemma, I finally face-upped my Iriya head I got in one of the last sales and have no idea what bodies she would fit on, due to the spindly CH neck. Maybe DollZone?

    39. astrosnik, my first thoughts would be ShinyDoll and possibly Peak's Woods, fwiw.

    40. Truthfully- I'm not a fan of double-jointed bodies and will take a well-designed single jointed body over most of the double-jointed bodies any way. I seem to be in the minority with that one, though. But I am not above gluing a double joint to turn it back into a single joint.

    41. I've never actually thought of doing that, it's not a bad idea. I put my Iriya head on a different CH body for now and found it quite over-large for her, even the older body is a little stocky. I'm almost thinking a mini or 1/4 body might work better because her head is so teeny. It's not much bigger than the Petite Ai who is supposed to be her 6 yo son!
(Sorry to spam twice in one day, yikes!)

    42. I wonder how the resin would match with planet doll. Their MSD-sized dolls in the larger size seem a bit larger than most MSDs so it might be a nice compromise. Or maybe one of the companies who sell 55 to 56 cm dolls- can't think of them offhand but I know at least a couple do have that smaller, kind of in-between size.
I have my Shinydoll head on an Obitsu 50 cm body and it's a very good match.

    43. If mini proportions seem better to you, then a ShinyDoll body would be a good choice. You might also consider an SQLabs 61 or 53cm body. My partner used the 61cm body for a very small girl head and it works well because it's extremely dainty. It's only slightly taller than a ShinyDoll or Delf girl and that's mostly because she has high heel feet that fit SD16 girl shoes. They have several resin colors (one for each type of Volks resin/vinyl) so resin match would be easy. And they have very pretty hands! :)

    44. Great suggestions, guys, thank you so much! I really like the shape of the Shinydoll but the SQ labs has those amazing hands (and since she needs to use sign language those would be awesome!)

    45. I love those SQLab bodies.

    46. Dollstown makes a 52 cm body (elf girl). I haven't seen it in real life, but the pictures look really nice, if you're looking for a less-mature body.

    47. Ooooh, cthulhu, Sia looks beautiful! The last time Claudine, my Sia, decided to dress up for Halloween, she didn't aim to be a lovely princess . . .

    48. They both look wonderful! :)

    49. You two have such gorgeous Sia girls! I love their Halloween attire. I'm still working on getting my Siwon girl together, but all of you are making the wait so much easier for me!

    50. Cynthia, Claudine would have fit in with my original plans for Halloween. When packing for the trip to KS I brought along all the black doll dresses I have. Then Sia found me & with this faceup & those eyes she's swayed me to the princess side. ;)
How fun to see what Sia looked like before Angeltoast got busy repainting her!

    51. Hey again, guys~ I'm having a lot of trouble finding someone to swap bodies with me. Are there any companies that are currently making doll bodies that might match old CH normal resin? My Siwon is so pale it wouldn't surprise me if I ordered a beauty white body from somewhere lol.

    52. Lolita, I'm not sure which way to steer you...:(
For reference, here is a clear photo of Sia showing 2 of the CH NS shades. They show up pretty well against her white clothes & it is pale but definitely has some color to it. Her head is a pinker NS which came with the 2nd version body so after 2007 while the body came from Choa & is the old style so pre 2006 if I understood Cynthia's explanation. Anyway this would give you an idea what NS could/might look like...

There used to be a couple of shorter SD dolls available thru Mint On Card but I don't see them now. And Dollndoll quit selling their Queen 55cm body...but then the CH head might have looked bobbly on that body...as to resin matches, I don't find any here in my collection of 2nd hand mellowed resins. :( The Elf dolls have more color, the Sr.Delf has less. The Volks is much yellower. & Dollndoll matched the Elfdolls. Of the 2 DT elf bodies I have, the Oriental skin doesn't match either tone of my Sia/Choa tho the fresh skin nearly matches Sia's pinker shade of pale NS...
I hope the perfect body will find you soon!!

    53. My oldest 2003 Sia is actually fairly close to my 2000 Volks, 2003-7 Volks are more yellow than she is. 2009ish CH is slightly more pale yellow than those same era Volks. You may be better off buying an older used body in the marketplace regardless as they seem to mellow over time. Elfdoll was a terrible colour match and fit (very bobble-headed) in 2009 but I don't have that one any more to compare.

    54. Thanks for the help, guys, I really appreciate it! I'll keep up the search, I was just hoping I might have other options for my girl if my search continues the way it has been. My Siwon is from 2004, so maybe I'll try and find a 2000-ish Volks to try it against, though those are pretty rare too. I guess I just need to be more patient!

    55. My Siwon came back from getting a faceup! She's still on the boy body, but as soon as I get a body to switch with it, she'll be complete. I can't believe it. And even though the body is all wrong, I am so in love. I knew this was meant to be.

    56. She looks fabulous! Good luck finding a new body for her. :)

    57. Thank you! I got her about a year ago, so it's taken all this time just to get this far. .__.; But it feels sort of like she's finally come home, you know? And thanks for the luck, I'm going to need it for sure!

    58. I am so glad she is finally coming together for you (even is she does have to be a tall tomboy for a little longer!) ;0 Wishing you lots of good luck with her in the new year!
