That one turn-off

Aug 2, 2012

    1. Fangs that are just painted on the lips... That's just not how fangs work!

    2. As much as i love yosd sculpts i wish they had a "slimmer" option, not saying the are too big, just i prefer a little slimmer, a little less chibi.
Same with the yosd hand, i wish they had more realistic hands instead of the chubby chibi looking hands ><

    3. It's usually the nose... I will come to love everything about a sculpt but dislike something about the nose. I know you can sand these things down but I have never really tried modding and I would be quite scared to go straight for the nose! I have seen someone do a nose mod by boiling the resin and just pushing the nose a bit! It was genius! And if you got it wrong you can boil it again and it goes back to the original shape

Also I really hate boy bodies that are really muscled inappropriately, they are usually really skinny but have jagged neck veins that look rather strange!

    4. Big eyes. I used to sort of like them, but anymore it's just not my thing. I like the more realistic, smaller eyes these days...

    5. ~~ This! a hundred times, this! it just drives me NUTS when I see a vampire doll fanged this way. It doesn't make any sense!

    6. There's probably going to be a lot of things that I won't like but for right now, it has to be the nose. If the doll is perfect but I don't like the nose, I probably won't buy it. I'm too scared and lazy to mod dolls right now.

      • x 1
    7. I have a few things that will turn me off a doll.

Toothy dolls. I can deal with just a hint of teeth showing, but a lot of teeth, not fangs but teeth, drives me nuts.

Mouths that are far too small for that face.

Eyes that are set too far apart. Also ones that are overly and unnaturally large, or really oddly shaped.

    8. This is such a good question. Automatic turnoffs:
      -eyes too close together
-too much space between the nose and mouth
      -yellow skin
-"flat" faces, as can be seen in resinsoul and bobobie

    9. Breasts are a pet peeve on bjd dolls. (Awkward to type that) Anyway I dislike it when it looks like someone just stuck on a round ball to the chest, or if they are ultra tiny and perfectly round on an adult doll.

Fangs have to be just right and natural looking not just stuck onto the doll or painted there. I truly prefer them to be inside the mouth for the most part anyway.

Un-natural looking chin to neck ratio. Not quit sure to describe this better... it might be something in my head.

Ultra generic face that correlates to anime, don't get me wrong I see people with anime type dolls and they are fine but for me I prefer facial quirks or unusual to make the doll seem interesting. I get bored with the big eye, little nose, little mouth look very fast.

    10. - I'm not a fan of childish msd and sd heads - those with big eyes and no expresion, like porcelain dolls (volks dolls are good example in my pinion).
      - I'm really annoyed with a dolls with short dewlap like bobobies dolls. From the profile without the wig It looks awful
      - Single joints -I love it when the doll poses like a dream and not just looks, and setting it takes forever.
      - Fingers with no structure.
      - MSD and SD Dolls should looks like a human, not as bland bonded mass, so dolls from dollhouse and iplehouse I consider brilliant.

    11. Well, I'm pretty hard to please when it comes to finding the perfect 'full picture' in a doll, but some things that bug me:

      - Big, boxy, square doll bodies where the doll looks too short compared to their cm height.
      - Single jointed arms (unless the range of movement is still high)
      - Dolls without torso joints
      - Generally poor-posing dolls
      - Dolls that are too big, just not the right size

I actually love dolls with teeth BTW ;-).

    12. I have a few too.
Female bodies for instance. I think I only saw one female doll I liked ever, bodywise.
Pouty lips and chummy faces, and oversized hips. It's just a no go for me.
I allways thought white skin, but I'm in the proces of getting a white skined doll. won't stay that way, but still white to start with^^.
and the biggest peeve of all, the ones that look anorecsic to me. I can understand that people see them as artistic, but me sorry, I do not like them at all.

    13. I feel like I'm going to buck the trend here but...

Male bodies - can't stand them, in the hobby or out of the hobby, particularly muscular ones. I feel sorry for my hubby but it's true.

Childish faces on adult bodies - Rin and Ante in MNF size are my two bugbears right now

Teeth, my Elysia has had hers removed

Female sculpts on male bodies - it's just trippy for me, fair enough if other people like it

Out of proportion anything whether it's the body or the facial features. For me, everything needs to be in proper proportions including the bust. No flat or crazy oversized silicon boobs for me

I feel really picky right now >.< lol

    14. Un-realistic fangs on vampire dolls just irk me...

    15. I have some turn-offs, but they may change over time, since I'm still new to the hobby >.<

I don't really like too childish bodies (unless they are for a childish character or a kid)
      Too small eyes... >.<
Some facial expressions, I like smiles and pouty lips and all, but not too much, and I'm not very fond of frowns etc.
Way too much curves, (for example very thin waist but big thighs)
      Too big head
Unnatural colours like green, purple, red, blue etc., it can look awesome but I'm not sure I want one

    16. For me it's all in the face/head. They can't look like a kid traced a face (I've seen some of those like that, where they look just...off) and I have to be able to see a gender in the face. If it looks too nuetral it drives me bonkers.

    17. Anime faces actually, Id never get one of those, also enormous boobs squeezed together, no torso joint, eyes to close together or to far apart, really muscular guys and single jointed are my personal dislikes

    18. It always bothers me when doll have what I call "stump neck." It's when the head doesn't seem to fit on the body quite right and you can see the rounded end of neck bulging out underneath the head. I'm also not a fan of macaroni noodle knees where there's this big elbow macaroni noodle looking joint piece in between the thigh piece and the calf where the knee cap should go. That and unnecessary parts (Doll Chateau's Adult bodies are big offenders on this) such as weird joints that don't seem to serve a purpose.

Despite my mini rant, I don't necessarily hate these things, I just wouldn't buy a doll with them since they aren't to my personal tastes.

    19. Not counting size (all the lovely dolls I've seen that are the wrong scale entirely, sigh), I think the main thing for me that makes me decide against it is either useless torso joints (ones that I can't see doing anything), or no torso jointing at all. I like my dolls to be able to slump and shift, not to sit and stand perfectly upright like they're trapped in a corset, and when there's no torso joint, or the joint doesn't benefit posing at all, it's a huge turnoff for me. I've got a headless body sitting cast aside on a shelf, in fact, that I rejected in part because the only body joint has a huge resin peg in the middle of it that stops it from moving at all, making it useless and driving me crazy.

    20. Hmm.. You know, I've grown quite a lot in this hobby. Things I used to downright hate I now like. But there are certain things I don't see myself ever enjoying...

      - Wide-set eyes. I see this in Bobobie/Resinsoul, and Dollzone sculpts like Mo and Fairyland MNF Ryeon.
      - Smooth/plasticy resin. I 100% prefer when you can feel tooth on a doll. Obviously I deal with it though because I love my MNF's. But if I feel a doll and there's tooth, it's just great.
      - Dolls under about 15cm. I've tried to own and love them, but they are just too small. When a doll is so small, I just feel like I'd lose it. Feels more like a kelly doll or something than a BJD. I wish I could own then because they are so cute, but they just are not for me.
-Smiley dolls. Some of them I can handle and love, but for the most part, I really don't like dolls that smile. I much prefer the pouty, neutral, sad, or angry expressions. Smiley dolls just often don't do it for me.
-Really really big lips. (For EX: DC Agatha/DIM Laia) I just.. it's not for me.
-Orange-tan. I haven't seen one doll in an orangy-tan resin color that I've liked. It's just not for me. Neither is "Normal skin yellow" I just don't like it. I like pretty much every other skintone though.
      -Huge noses
-Jointed hands. I've tried to like them, but on almost every doll I see them on, they don't look normal.
-Anthros with non-magnetic ears. This really irritates me. I will not let myself have a Pipos doll because I can't stand the thought of having a perpetually bald doll. I wish pipos would just attach their ears with magnets so I could put a wig on them :c
-French resin. I'm not really sure why this is even a thing when it ages so terribly.
-DC extra joints. I don't understand them, and I don't like the look (Especially the neck one)
-Headcaps where you have to attach the string to the headback. My Bluefairy doll is an offender on this one.
-Male dolls with unrealistically large hands
-Pointy nipples. This just annoys me. It makes the doll look constantly cold or something.. I just don't like them.

Huh. That was a way bigger list than I thought I'd produce. I guess I'm more picky than I thought. :P But there are about 1,000 things I love, so it's ok <3

    21. I am not a huge fan of the big anime eyes/faces. Do not get me wrong, I do not hate those faces at all -and I do like looking at the ones that other people have. I just like my dolls to look more real and less cartoonish and would never buy one for myself.

    22. The things that turn me off is nose and lips. Sometimes there some sculpt that making a really unnatural mouth or lips that I feel is too much. Even in the sims game, I tend to tweak the nose and lips to make my favorite character

    23. Hmm. Some very interesting opinions here.

I don't like set expressions. A neutral face is nice and it can say lots of different things from lots of different angles. But smiles and frowns and tongues poking out just get way too much.
Anime heads and eyes. You've got quite a realistic body. Then it's really jarring with the anime face on top. It looks weird in real life anyway. I'm even a bit weird about action figures.
Big noses that spread out on the face.
Childish bodies with mature faces. I often find a really cute sculpt, but then I see their bodies....
Fantasy parts. I know these are really popular. But I'm not a fan at all.
      Small boons and massive hips.
      Skinny bodies with large heads.
Tinies that look more like troll dolls.
      Slitty eyed heads.
      Bazoonga boobs.
Tiny tiny waists that feel like they're going to snap.

      I'm a bit picky. ;)

    24. Too small noses drive me nuts, not just on dolls but in art and when people do plastic surgery. It just looks odd to me. =P

Where have you seen too big noses? I'm not sure I've seen a doll with one!

    25. I love all kinds of stylizations, so none in particular are turn-offs to me, but I need the dolls to look like they belong on the same doll and are positioned proportionate to one another.

      Actual qualifiable turn-offs:

What I like to call "melty face". Where the face is alright, and all of the features are positioned at aesthetically pleasing distances from one another... And the face is just too low on the head, eating the jaw and leaving a massive noggin. Sometimes it IS intentionally done that way, with the big animu babby forehead, and that's fine, because the rest of the sculpt was created to work with the big forehead and the itsy chin. But sometimes it's just like... WHAT are you doing?

Bad profiles. Some dolls have the most adorable faces until you see them in profile. This is particularly true of the more stylized dolls. Some of them almost have a snout. :C

Girl dolls with tiny waists. If her waist is as almost as thin as her head and you DON'T know what you're doing, back off. There are a number of sculptors that have executed exaggerated proportions with masterful precision, and it looks good, because, again, the rest of the doll was sculpted WITH the knowledge that the waist is going to be crazy, unnaturally thin. So the other features correspond to that significant distortion of human anatomy. But I look at some of the other dolls and all I can think of is yikes, she has no organs.

Boy dolls that have no hips. This actually carries over from my real life preferences in real men. Curvature at the waist is beautiful and graceful. I'm not expecting much, but their hips gotta be bigger than their waist or I don't want them. Too blocky and awkward-looking. (It's even worse because I like muscular, broad men and male dolls and they almost always have teensy tinsy little itsy bitsy pelvic girdles and I just get all sad-face. Can I have all this, but with more butt, please?).

Boy dolls with muscles sculpted like they've roided out, starved and dehydrated themselves to dry out their skin, then drank copious amounts of glucose water to make their muscles flare. If the boy doll looks like he's getting ready to go on a stage for body-building competition (regardless of the size of his muscles, by the way), I get grossed out. Normal people have fat under their skin that softens the look of the muscle and gives them a natural and beautiful body shape.

In general, lack of anatomical knowledge on the part of the sculptor, though this is more of a "turn on" when a sculptor demonstrates their knowledge of anatomical detail. I LOVE it when sculptors get female abdomen right - with hip-bones and a bit of a curve sloping down to the crotch.

    26. Ew ew ew! Agreed, just thinking about that gives me the willies.

    27. Dolls that have baby lips.... The only dolls I can think of at the moment that seem to do that a lot are littlefee/pukifee/pukipuki. I really love Fairyland but dem baby lips make me turn away*_*

    28. Not enough articulation. I like jointed torsos, and hip articulation at least.

    29. My biggest turn off is too adult-looklike bodies... big and fake breast look dosen't attract me.
Also yellow skin and long neck..I don't like them also.

    30. Broad shoulders and small head. I can see pictures of a doll's face and think it's beautiful, but then when a picture shows the head relative to the shoulders and the doll looks pin-headed, I completely lose interest. I like things with proportionally large heads...curse you Pullips for twisting my views of reality. (I collected Pullips before BJDs.)

    31. Giant heads. :/

Giant heads make me sad. I wanted a PlanetDoll Roseanne until I realized their heads are bigger than a JID's. So she would look odd with my other MSDs... WHY

      Also TINY BELLYBUTTONS, GRRRRRRR.

Oh, and... single jointed knees. Why do those even still exist? I have seen plenty of double jointed ones that look just as good if not better in some cases, so it isn't really an aesthetic compromise... I don't know.

    32. To small eyes >.< Sometimes I see a sculpt I like with small eyes but not to add in my collection.
Also jointed necks give me the chill.
to small boobs that look like grapes on a body, I actually like big breasted female body's.

    33. It's always the body... If the male/female body doesn't look like I want it to then I just have a little sad fest and then move on. That and hands, if they are too chubby I might not like the doll as much as I would. I love elegant hands, long and slender.

    34. I have two. There are some conditions though!

      1. Big, "fake" breasts on female BJDs. I don't like it when they look unrealistic. It makes me feel awkward when I see a doll that looks like it's undergone plastic surgery. But this really only happens when the doll is nude, so for the most part, it's not so bad. And I can't honestly say I'm "turned off" by this, I'm just not a fan.

      2. Really unique expressions. Now, I LOVE different expressions, like open mouth grins, expressions that show off teeth, winking faces, and so on...but I just wouldn't want a very specialized face sculpt, in regards to expression. I prefer expressions that will be more versatile, so that they always look their best, and so I don't have to worry about them when taking photos. For example, I absolutely love Granado's Hansel. He's absolutely stunning, and I would love to have him. But--I would worry that I'd be quite limited as far as photos went, and he wouldn't look...ideal, at all times. I'd rather have dolls that have more "neutral" faces, or perhaps...just less "extreme." If that makes sense.

    35. I don't really have too many hang-ups. My doll brood is pretty varied and there really isn't one attribute across the board I could pinpoint and say, "Nope, I hate that." That having been said...

      1. The old-style Soulkid girl body had some really weird boobs. I mean, really weird. I've always meant to have mine sanded off and I will someday, because they basically look like afterthoughts and are positioned oddly and are too large for the childlike body.

      2. I have a problem posing double-jointed bodies. I don't hate them or anything, I just find them more challenging to work with and prefer single-jointed.

    36. Head shape; I don't care how 'normal' their head shape looks when they have a wig on, but if it appears like an alien head or cone head when bald, I'm instantly turned off.

    37. Mine is tiny little boy penises on very muscular men. I've seen men with baby faces but please try to sculpt the penis more? It not that I'm a perv, it's just that a super realistic and defined male body with a lump oval for the penis really bothers me. It looks so fake, and no balls?! At that point can I even call them men? Tiny penises are fine, I'd just like a little attention to detail.

Other than that vampire teeth. Because it always looks unrealistic or inbred.

    38. Going to sound weird since these are ball-jointed dolls, but I really don't like the joints showing. I will go out of my way to cover them up.

    39. Pale or very "white" skin. If the sculpt is great but the doll is "fair" - I won't get it.
Just not my thing in dolls :sorry

    40. The quirk that has kept me from buying certain dolls is an awkward neck joint. Either too long, or a pronounced gap between the neck and the edges of the mating socket on the head. Once I notice it, I can't unsee it.

    41. Lately it's been white skin, but as far as features go it really all just depends on what it's being paired with,so it's hard to narrow down.

    42. I only have a couple, but they are major turn offs for me and I am incredibly picky about them.

      - Childish faces on mature bodies. Just... Those dolls that look like baby faces with huge curvy bodies and adult breasts totally make me shudder.

      - Mature faces on childish bodies. Just like my distaste for things the other way round, I really can't stand these mature, often very womanly looking heads on bodies that look like under developed children. I just can't like it, it kina creeps me out.

      - Overly exaggerated thigh gaps. Don't like it at all in real life, utterly detest it in dolls, especially the female ones.

      - Doll breasts. Yes I meant to put that as a general thing. I used to find it so hard to like female dolls enough to want one and I always wanted those really curvy, busty dolls. Now though, I find myself only wanting smaller busted dolls. But they have to be sculpted right. No matter what size they are there has to be no weird round lumps, no oh I'll just chuck this on as an after thought, no look at me I just had plastic surgery boobs... I could go on and on but yeah the boobs have to be done right.

      - Unshapely hands or feet. They just have to be sculpted with definition and care. I like my dolls hands and feet to look as pretty as the rest of the doll.

      - Penis's. Yep I totally said it. Just as some people who I've read before, the whole lump in place of a penis, or tiny penis on a majorly manly body, especially if it's an I'll defined one just doesn't work for me. I keep my dolls dressed at all times, but if so ,such effort is going to be put into making a big, manly sculpt, then work on ALL parts of that manly body!

Um that's all I can think so that must be it, but yeah that all really bugs me so bad.

    43. Does it have to be one? Haha, I have a list.

      1. Elf Ears. I have several dolls that were sculpted with elf ears and I have had their ears sanded to human. I can't stand elf ears.
      2. Vampire Teeth - so I don't own any vampire dolls
      3. Chihuahua eyes. Chihuahuas freak me out, so when dolls are bug eyed, it creeps me out. Plus I hate the too big eyes look. The "deer in headlights" stare. Worst offenders? Minifee Ryeon and Dollga Noella.
      4. White Skin. Once exception to this is my mnf/unoa hybrid and the mnf body is white skin. I tolerate it for him. Normal skin all the way here.

    44. 1) chocolate square abs, many companies give abs to their male dolls especially hound but why do they must look like a bar of chocolate....so square and so.....square
      2) water balloon boobs, why do they must be like that, if for all it's a big boobed dolls i want her boobs to be nicely curved not just two half sphere stuck on the torson
      3) lack of muscle detail on the face or body, i found a lot of chinese company have this problem where the face is so flat with this super sharp chin that can pierce through your soul
      4) body being too stocky... as in square shoulder and really thick wrist and knees

    45. It's not as perverted as it sounds but adult male dolls with a tiny bump for a penis. It just disturbs me. Dolls should look good naked too.

    46. I love these threads, because they show the diversity in bjd collectors! Some of the turn-offs people have listed are my favourite doll features!

My biggest turn off is little baby starfish shaped hands on a doll that looks over two years old. I was so glad 5Star changed to bigger, more detailed hands on their yosds before I bought my Amy.

I skip straight past anything with anime features. I won't buy French resin. No boobs that look like two halves of a rockmelon! And no fangs painted on lips.

All this said, I can often enjoy looking at other people's dolls with these things, I'd just not consider buying them myself.

    47. Finally thought of a more specific turn off. Bulgy veins! Even on people they make me a bit uncomfortable. xP

    48. Well, not to say I have one, a couple certainly

      - Large, wide open eyes. Urgh, creepy >< Have a doll that used to have unnaturally wide eyes, they have been modded to be more in proportion to an actual human face. Eyes do not open wide enough to engulf cheekbones.
      - Torso jointing that is directly under the bust. Since when does a human bend there? Its unnatural, and to me quite horrid. I will happily go around testing on hybridising dolls to avoid it - which is quite a challenge I've found with MiniFees ><
      - Pudgy, childish faces on dolls that do not have pudgy, childish bodies. A clearly teenage body with a childlike face? Nope, no. Get that with some tinies, it doesn't work ><

Obviously, personal no-nos, I know I've seen other people's dolls with these and have liked what they have done with them. But owning them myself, brr, no.

    49. There are a few for me too:

      - white skin - I don't really want to have porcelain-like dolls, although I do like seeing them with beautiful face-ups and in amazing clothes! :)
      - crooked nose - I've just seen a quite nice doll but that super-long nose discourages me from even putting him onto wish list.
      - unnaturally big breasts - curvy and mature dolls are okay, but not these. ><

    50. A common one I've seen is the boys with muscled abdomens but you can still see their ribs, and I agree with that so hard... My AoD boy has a pretty nice torso and I like it a lot EXCEPT for his ribs...

Super thick eye wells and huge ears are pet peeves on a head... As far as bodies go I don't like super odd looking robot joints and hands that are basically a clump of resin with some indentions in it. I don't mean when the fingers are simply in a closed/touching position, touching fingers are fine as long as there's still detail and proportion, I mean when there's barely any detail at all and the hands look like thick shovels...

    51. Biggest turn off for me is eyes too close to each other.

Second is "clunky" body - torso where joints aren't smooth (like the pieces were not quite fitting right).

    52. For some reason I don't like when a doll has an open mouth.

    53. right off the bat i'd have to say i dont like smaller girl dolls with HUGE boobs.
Like MSD sized girls can look like adults but most have small child like faces
and just...+ big boobs? noo thank you.

    54. I've got a whole list, many of which have been mentioned here already.

      Too large eyes.
Ski-jump noses (except on my Rosen-he rocks his!)
Flat-cheeked faces with no definition and no discernible jaw-line.
      Shovel hands
      Lump feet
      Too close eyes
Noses that are set too high between the eyes-this is huge for me, it occurs in a lot of Chinese dolls and they look totally freaky to me. Limwha also did it in her tinies and it ruined them for me.
      Melon/bouncy ball breasts
Bad engineering-I had to customize the lower torso joint on my Doll Family H body with PVC pipe, because there was no interior insert to stabilize it and every time you turned the joint, the whole doll would collapse at the waist. I don't ask my dolls to be gymnasts, but I do think they should be engineered well enough to stand firmly and sit easily erect without leaning back. Many of my much loved crew are lacking in this department, so I'm pickier about new dolls.
Face/body maturity match. Absolutely! With particular emphasis on the part that I find bodies labeled as 7 or 10 year old with breasts, no matter how vestigal, disturbing in the extreme. I've seen a couple that I liked otherwise that I would have had to sand down to be able to live with. I also don't like dolls of that age range that are done up as sexy.
Huge, bulging veins everywhere-it's the fashion now I know, and I don't mind subtle veining, particularly on the hands, but some of these muscle men look like their blood pressure is through the roof and they're about to stroke out.

    55. I must say the over-whelming abundance of child-like boyish faces on 70cm boys is annoying, as is the insistence of childish faces w/mature bodies on certain MSDs.... I do NOT like the big head or the big hip trend at all either.
As for clothes, thank GOODNESS I sew. Floofy frilly lace encrusted - & that's just the boys' stuff LOL
However my biggest peeve is how some people love to just constantly demand that 'these are just toys' blah blah blah. I'm thinking giving a child a piece of poisonous resin to play with might constitute child abuse...

    56. Weird/bukly/unshaped hands.
      Orange tan skin tone.
There are others, but those are the most glaring doll turn-offs I have. Hands will literally sell the doll to me. I could love a sculpt from here to the moon but if the hands are boring and not even remotely delicate, I won't go for it.

    57. Oh - eyes that are too far apart for my liking! I had the most gorgeous doll, but I could not get over her eyes. You couldn't tell in the promo photos that they were like that. So even though she really was stunning I ended up selling her. I just kept thinking she looked like a lizard :(

    58. I love really widely-spaced eyes! I think it's a reaction to finding people with close-set eyes creepy. Luckily it's not something I've seen in bjds, but I do sometimes see it in other dolls and it gives me the heebie jeebies!

    59. I'm not a fan of big busts, but mostly just for aesthetic reasons. And it's easier to dress a flat chested body, ahaha. The big thing that gets me though is "same face" sculpts. I feel like a lot of Soom head sculpts look the same in their Gem line, which is a bummer because I adore their fantasy parts.

    60. I really don't like seeing narrow noses, like, too narrow to look natural. To me dolls with those noses look really creepy, and sometimes the rest of their features aren't balanced with that nose. Like big eyes or large lips.
