For me, it's when dolls have open mouths. A little teeth is ok, like the Unoa Lusis is adorable to me. But when dolls have very open mouths it's just not my preference. Also, when dolls are sculpted to look permanently sad. I have found some that are so lovely! But they are sculpted that they can't look anything but sad, and I find it a little limiting artistically. Last thing is unnatural looking breasts. When they look like they'd be someone who, in real life, has had implants, it's not my preference. Bigger is fine, but personally, when they are very round all around/squished together/very very large in a way that is unnatural looking I don't prefer it.
Male dolls who have a 10 year old face in a grown-looking body (even if it's not muscular). I've seen a lot of companies do this and I just dislike it a lot. Looks uncanny.
Thick ankles… I know it’s weird, but some sculpts have really bulbous ankles and I just don’t like it. Sharp pointy faces are also a bit of a no for me.
Some people say bobble heads but I say tiny heads. I can’t remember the company or doll but it looked like the head belonged on a 1/8 or yosd body but it was on an msd body.
Sculpted on "facial expressions" - specifically like the ones from FL. There's something so off-putting to the faces that have this (looking at you Iset and Lami). I don't really know why, because their more neutral faces, or faces with a slight smile are gorgeous
This actually reminded me of something I won't consider a deal-breaker per se, but is something I find rather obnoxious—ankles/wrists that are curved near the joint area. A mild curve is fine—it's those ones with the pieces jutting outwards that reduce poseability that really irk me. Besides poseability issues, it makes those areas more fragile against tight stringing in a way a more straight wrist/ankle region wouldn't be burdened with.
I don't like dolls that have huge unnatural looking chest, hands that are not that detailed, extremely large eyes or anime features like a nose that looks non-existent. If the doll has somme features i dislike though it doesn't always stop me from buying the doll if overall I like most things about the doll. I saw a male bjd that looked super muscular in an unnatural way I didn't like that. I don't like dolls that have a child face, but a grown up body. Is it a young looking baby-like adult or a child with a grown up body? If it's a child with a grown up body that's too disturbing for me. Those chunky hands for those smaller dolls look somehow unpleasant. I saw a doll on Instagram that had a chest that looked sort of like two large watermelons on her chest on a thin body. That is something I wouldn't personally buy. It's not a doll for me.
The greatest turn-off for me is when a male doll is just so muscular that his head looks super small compared to his body. For female dolls, I'm also repulsed by big boobs taht look fake. But if a doll has a big chest but is also, for example, chubby, and her chest looks realistic, it doesn't bother me.
I am not a fan of grey skin, or super pouty lips. The grey skin is something that I think could look good given the faceup, styling, etc., but I have not seen any doll I like with it yet.
I’m not a big fan of YOSDs, I have one of them that I really like, he’s got the basic YOSD face though. They all have that standard baby doll look with that same expression. It’s fine, nothing actually wrong with it, but boring. A thing that genuinely squicks me out though is strongly sculpted expressions. Like the big smiles that actually open the mouth and wrinkles the cheeks are pure nightmare fuel for me.
I find that sculpts which look too much like a human being are weird. I admire the art in it, but...a doll need to have a "doll aspect" and not to be fully like a human...them dolls are strange (but beautiful)
Hm. I don't like the extremely muscular dolls with body- and/or facial hair. No matter the quality or rarity of the doll, I would not be interested. On the other side of the spectrum, I permanently don't like anything in the 1/6 size and below. They just look too toy-like and have the tendency to be too young-looking.
Usually the size of the doll determines whether I'll be interested in it or not. I've learned that I'm more into 1/3 scale than 1/4 scale, so when I see a doll I like and its MSD 1/4 sized I pass on it. Also the price of a doll can be a turnoff to me as well, not necessarily anything wrong with the sculpt itself.
I’m not fond of dolls with broad shoulders and narrow hips. They feel unbalanced. Also sculpted human teeth. I’ve never liked the way teeth look in drawings either.
Different colour skins on human bodies ( like green/blue/purple) Those dolls with oversized body proportions eg lips like bratz dolls Like pear shape dolls? And like teeth too I do have some dolls I admire with these features actually but in general I wouldn’t really buy them so
Oddly shaped lips that are way too big. I love full lips on a doll but some look like they overdid it with the lip filler. Like two sausages pressed together.
Oh! faces and special genital parts will always be ?? to me, like I just don't get it. Also dolls that are super muscular and then they have a tiny pea head lmao, I'd rather my doll have a big ol' noggin' bobblehead effect if I had to have bad proportions. Sometimes magnetic parts annoy me, like not everything needs to be magnetic, enough already...
Tig ol bitties in general, open mouths or "kissy" faces, impaired arm and leg movement (especially in the knees)
Weirdly long, spindly necks. On some dolls it is stylized a lot and isn't so bad, but I've seen some dolls that otherwise have realistic proportions, but have a giraffe neck. Also, my other big one is male dolls with super wide shoulders, to the point it makes their head look tiny
It's so funny to look at everyone's turn-offs and see dozens people say they hate something that I like or even prefer in a doll. I guess it goes to show how varied the doll hobby is hahaha! In any case, if the body doesn't pose well, it's hard for me to bond with any doll, even one I think is perfectly cute. I guess I just really value posing, it makes my doll feel more alive to me.
Too small feet on big boys, too long legs on any doll, unnaturally posed hands... I'm thinking... No, those are the most important. Found another one: small heads on gigantic bodies. I guess good proportions are important to me.
Just came up with a new one: the newer trend of realistic proportioned bjds that are in actuality quite pin-headed. Impl's newer heads have been especially prone to this. I took life drawing classes, and human heads are not that small (with a few exceptions).
My tastes have completely changed since I entered the doll hobby back in 2016. I first said I'd never own a doll over $200, then I'd never own a doll over $700, never own a resin...you get the picture. I still, however, do not like super skinny dolls, toothy dolls (depending on the face because two of my girls are vampires), and I'm not into plus sized dolls or dolls with huge thighs and boobs. I know there is a general want for dolls of different body sizes and I totally understand that. Coming from someone plus sized, the last thing I'd want to own is a doll that looks like me. My dolls are facets of what I want to be and can't.
My biggest turn-offs are weird hands and feet. I own an old DZ body with weird toes that I somehow have learned to live with but when the hands look like there are no bones inside then that's a pass from me, no matter how pretty the body. I also steer clear of torsos that are too long - it just looks weird to me, exaggerating proportions in the wrong place imo (not every top has to be a crop top, thank you!).
Sculptured strong face expressions, like winking or raising eyebrows, I don't know why. Recently, I saw a doll on second hand marked and I liked it,he had stunning faceup and body blush, but his ears pierced, like, someone drilled the holes in the resin. Pain I would have considering buying it otherwise, I understand some people like it, a pity it bothers me for no reason at all...Especially funny cause irl my ears pierced too
I don't like the pin headed dudes with the massive bodies either, even though that seems to be the style now. Maybe I'm just resentful that the huge dudes made the 62-65cm boys clothing market dry up so much. Other than that: neck joints (weirds me out), cankles, joints that click when you move an arm/leg, legs that lock in place (either sitting or standing), gore mods (this is my weak stomach, they can be very artistic), spider/insect legs on things, eyes where I am not expecting eyes (weak stomach again), legs that are too too long, necks that are too too long, and that thing they do with the knee where it has it's own piece and you can see joint lines above and below (I realize this makes great mobility, but I don't like the look). I used to think I hated visible teeth but somehow I keep ending up with dolls that have them so I guess that wasn't true!
This! I came back to the hobby after a long while to see these gorgeous angelic faces on these hulking bodies, and to me it’s just kinda goofy. It’s not a big deal, bc I’ll just hybrid any head I really want…but sometimes I miss having full sets.
the way most boobs, especially large ones, look on most msd size bodies i've seen bugs me... idk many of them seem a bit too unnatural looking for my taste. but i generally prefer boy dolls, so that's not really a huge issue for me! and teeth, especially defined teeth D: i just really do not like it. i do like expressive dolls, but teeth are usually a dealbreaker for me. i've seen a few dolls with just a bare hint of teeth that i've liked okay, but for the most part... teeth = absolutely no thank you! and super realistic looking or hyper-defined dolls in general, i'd have to say, are not my thing. whether they are just very realistic in the face, or if they have like crazy muscles or something similar (even if it's stylized), i'm probably gonna pass on it. i prefer a softer and somewhat more stylized look.
Pin heads on 65cm and taller dolls. My collection is mostly Volks, so any new dolls have to fit with my existing crew. My Loongsoul Cang Jue is bordering on pinhead with his wide shoulders and big old yaoi hands. It does help me save money though! I can see the most beautiful head sculpt, but if the circumference is less than 22cm, it's not for me
Too big breasts. Too long and skinny shins. Pear bodies. Anime faces. Unrealistic body details. Unnatural posing. Pin heads of cute little boys on giant bodybuilder bodies. Silly faces. Too expressive faces. Breasts that look like the law of gravity doesn't apply to them. Dolls that look like they stepped out of a comic book. A bland beauties... Interchangeable faces... It's not enough for me if the doll is beautiful. It has to have a soul.
My biggest turn off is lack of texture. I’ve seen some lovely dolls but the lack of any muscle sculpture or flow built into the doll kills me every time. I’m also not fond of locking joints. Not entirely certain why.
Really sweet, young looking female dolls. Especially with the small mouths. Chubby MSDs. Duck lips haha. Just not my cuppa!
Very expressive face, especially a tongue hanging out. Or l would want another head with more neutral expression. I mean nobody walks around the whole day like a panting dog. Kids or toddlers with a mouth so small that it looks like they don’t have any at all. Eyes that remind of the trivia fact that ostrich has more eyes in the head than brain.
Asymmetrical face with lots of space between eyes. Very big hips & chest 1/4 of that. Open mouth dolls.
and when you google it: "usually a symptom of a birth defect or genetic disorder". Only good for Avatar blue creatures, not for humans.
I want to apologize - for joking that I want to fight (heavens, it's just dolls), but also... now I totally agree with you. Funny how much your tastes can change, eh? Now, I love sculpted knee caps and seek them out when looking to purchase new dolls. I love all of the new taller girl sculpts that are coming out, but man, the laffy taffy legs are driving me crazy. What I mean by that is, some companies make the dolls taller by streeeeettttcccchhhhing out the legs so that they are super long and skinny - like the calves are made of laffy taffy or something. Another thing that really frustrates me (as someone else mentioned) is a lack of sculpting detail. Legs and arms that are just tubes, or backs with no shoulder blades - especially on more expensive dolls. If I'm dropping $500 and up, I want some detail, please!
Pointed ears on “human” dolls, maybe someday I might like it, but I really don’t right now! I love vampire-esqe dolls but I just can’t get one with pointed ears, they feel like fairy dolls and those just don’t fit my vibe. I also don’t like mouths too close to the nose, I saw one doll like that and I just, couldn’t make myself like it. I also am not a fan of flat chins, I at least need a bit of a shape, it feels like a square without it, but honestly flat chins is lowest on my list of doll turn-offs
- big lips. Seriously, why? I know they look cool and whatever but sometimes they take up half of the face. :/ - overly long elf ears. I know they have to stick out but I want some ears that look like Vulcan ears, just a tad bit. - humungous eyes. I get that the eyes are the mirror of the soul but sometimes they are just too big. - heads that are just too big for the body (looking at you, Dragon Doll) - lack of sleepy, half closed eyes versions. For 20 dolls there sometimes is just one of this variety. - teeth. I just don't like them. But when I draw characters yes, I do a slightly open mouth with teeth, but with dolls - please keep it closed. - three part torsos. I have an Island doll and it's frustrating. T_T I know it's for better posability but I don't need it - I need a nice two part torso. - resin itself as a material used. It's heavy, usually yellows so what's the point of getting any other shade than yellow and is heavy and fragile :/ I picked up my girl today - cheesus, she's heavy, and she's only 1/3 :/
For me, it's the dolls with tongues and defined teeth. It's just not my cup of tea. That and dolls that have ribs showing.
Now I know it's probably slightly more realistic but for some reason the neck size bothers me on most dolls (especially the 60cm+ boys). Some of them are practically the exact same width as the heads and it just looks so... off. I don't want them to look full bobble head but I definitely prefer a slender neck look to that stocky body builder type.
I am not insanely picky when it comes to dolls, but I do have styles and types of dolls that I prefer. I am not big on male dolls because they aren't my style, but I agree with the person who said that the way male bodies are made is weird, unrealistic, and the proportions are strange. When it comes to girl or androgynous dolls I'm not too fond of really insanely proportionate ones like Angel Philia dolls. I don't love it when the whole style of the doll is that they are supposed to be sexy. Angel Philia dolls just have everything that I dislike in a doll style-wise, even though I know they aren't resin dolls they are just the best example that comes to mind for me. I have a Mayfair sweet and that one doesn't bother me because the weirdness of the body has a reason at least, and Pasha Pasha, Popovys, and those kinds of dolls are always in skimpy outfits because they want to show off the sculpting, so they have reasons. I find that I do get put off by bodies that have single jointing and try my best to look for double-jointed bodies, but if I like the head I would just get it by itself and find a body that fits it with good jointing.
- and yet somehow they are becoming popular or at least experimented with by companies As for the ribs - if they are slightly defined - I actually like it, gives a bit more realistic look.
It's so interesting how everyone's tastes are so different! I think that makes the hobby more interesting.
Lack of posability! If a doll body doesn't have double jointes that's an immediate no for me, but when looking at bodies I'm always going to go for one with a 3 joint torso over a 2 joint one. Thigh joints too. I got my first hybrid because while the original body was beautiful, the mobility was so limited, being both single jointed and lacking a thigh joint for the price. Other than that, super ripped (male) bodies in the SD+ scale aren't super interesting to me and I wish softer-looking bodies were more common. For head sculpts, extremely doll-like features are a big turndown. Huge eyes, tiny noses, round face, there's just not much personality in them for me. Beyond that I'm not a big fan of smiling or open mouths. Unless it's an alternative to a more neutral expression, I don't want to be locked in to something extreme, mainly because I don't want to be limited when it comes to photographing them.
That's a new thing, the bigger thighs and I'm seeing it a lot usually described as "pear shaped" dolls. In a way it's not a bad thing but it does make dressing them a bit challenging. So far only one of my minis has that and she wears a looser dress. I think it started in the small fashion dolls and is now making it's way into other dolls including BJDs. It's a step towards inclusivity, trying to give people dolls that might look more like them? The other thing is now I'm seeing a few very muscular girls, like girls who do a lot of gym. For me any Anime looking doll or kid like dolls, especially with teeth, I am not a fan...
This! This so much! A surprising amount of pet dolls even lack any leg joints aside from the connections to the body, that and no joint at the ankle! And lots of regular dolls have completely unposeable tails too. Ugh, I’ve been spoiled by the giant dragons!!
It's not exactly a new thing. I remember when the original Leekeworld Art Body came out and that's quite some time ago (2010 or something?). It was probably the first exaggerated pear shaped BJD body, at least the first well known one. I didn't get it at all at the time, until I saw one in person and it was actually adorable. I believe they made an even more extreme one a few years later? I could remember that wrong, though. With that said, there certainly has been a bit of a new wave of them over the last five years or so, especcially among smaller artists.
My #1 is underbust cuts in the body. I don't like them. I think they look wrong when the joint is engaged. I'd rather have a proper chest cut even if it's visible but it's getting more and more rare. Single joints are a deal-breaker too. I want mobility and natural posing in dolls.
After getting a 65cm female dorrie, her foot is the major turn off. It's a nightmare to find women shoes that would fit her 8.1 - 8.2 cm size. >.<'''
I tend to do for more "natural" looking or sort of realistic dolls so a big turn off would be things that are super unrealistic. So I tend to stay away from dolls with really fake looking boobs or comically big boobs or unrealistic body proportions even though that's really kind of hard. I'm not into gore or scarring although I think it is artistic and cool with other people's dolls. I'm not into tattoos but still think it's cool for other people's dolls. I don't like it if a doll looks too sad as I think to myself, "Who hurt you?" and it would bother me that they are forever in a sad state. Although from an artistic standpoint I like the look of more fantasy dolls (vampire, centaurs, mermaids, animal or mythical creature hybrids, etc), it's not for me but I can still appreciate them and even admire them. Oh! And childlike faces on overly sexualized adult bodies. That bothers me. For me to even consider purchasing a doll, the doll must: have a face-up, have eyes, have a wig, fullset clothing, and shoes. I'm not interested in learning face-ups and I don't have the talent for sewing clothing, so I prefer to have a doll ready to go. If it's like a standard doll that has a face-up option, even random eyes, and either a random wig or I know what sized wig, shoes, and clothes to go for, I'm fine with that too. But I'm old and tired and need to take time to save up money. Hahaha. The least amount of effort for a doll purchase is the best for me.
I thought of another one , that I just noticed on some doll photos recently: wrongly-placed ears, that sit way too low on the face, compared to nose and eye-sockets. Almost like they are melting and sliding downwards. Throws off the whole face sculpt, to me.
Although 8,2x3=24,6 and 65x3=195. For a woman that tall feet would be somewhere in the range of 27 (+/-) or more, so the doll should have around 9 cm feet. Obviously doesn’t help to find shoes for her.
- which is weird, because, ekhm, it's a doll. I know Reborn dolls look very lifelike but it's rather an exception than the rule. Theye ven started to making Monster high with curvy body as if dolls were responsible for dysmorphia. In my whole life I never wanted to look like a Barbie or a bjd, so it's really crazy for me. :/ - yup! A lot of 1/4 dolls' faces belong to 1/6 category, totally agree. I think Volks is especially guilty of this, since their 1/3 (teenage dolls) have very childish faces.:/ But I am still sucker for their Kun model and it's a foregone wish because it's no longer available - wow. I don't mind a naked doll but the face-up is a must, like with you becasue I am not there yet with it. Sewing? yes, much closer and I really enjoy it. Additionally there are really no clothes that I would like for my doll (either too elaborate or not in the style I want - decora style? Nope. Industrial lolita? Also nope. Street wear? Yeah, more or less so, but still not exactly what I'm looking for except for pants/trousers. And don't get me started on shoes. :/ And I've notices how many people here don't like pronounced teeth and yet so_many_dolls_have_them. Why, companies, why? Luckily sometimes teeth are marked by the make up, but still, it's a bit of a struggle to cover them nicely with paint and secure them with varnish. :/ And half opened mouth - doesn't show teeth but it's like the doll is eternally gasping for air - it makes me a bit uncomfortable,
Got another one: Companies listing dolls that are sold out on their site and... no other dolls. Why, though? Where's the sense in that apart from identification help? :/ Why not keep it neatly under: Sold out items? It infuriates me to no end, when I click: 1/3 size and tadaa! sold out, sold out, sold out... ALL sold out. Why do it, though? :/
I'm okay with that for sellers like Foveo, where they open for a limited time and theme a sell every month. One month might be the seasonal dolls, another wigs, another all unlimited dolls, etc. My newest thing that's a turn off is when the artist stretches a face (forehead/chin) to fit the frame of 75cm doll, and once you pose him past portrait, you see that the width of the face is the same or lesser than the width of the neck. And, this is not even "We tried to increase the size of a head for a 68cm body to fit a 75cm body, but now it might fit a 69-70cm body for a 75cm body" category.
- oh yes! I've noticed the same with male dolls. It wouldn't bother me if it was like Iple House does - all of their dolls have more or less human proportions, but to do this with dolls with less human proportions feels weird. And I don't like... trends. Now the trend is full lips, big eyes and aesthetics of porcelain/antique dolls. Many companies do so and I don't mind as much but I really miss the variety of styles and molds. :/ Not to mention that molds became so generic I easily confuse one company with other (Loonng Sould with Ring Doll for example - they are both fantastic companies and I love their dolls it's just they a tad bit similar to each other). I don't know, maybe it's just me :/
Companies using AI generated images to create promo materials. As an illustrator it's a slap in the face. So you don't want us to buy recasts because the recasters are stealing your IP and labour without compensation (which I totally support, btw!) but now you're chill with just using tech bro products that steal other artists' IP and labour (and in the case of disabled artists like me, literal physical pain) because you can't be bothered to shell out a couple hundred bucks for a promo illustration from a human artist? GTFO.
@Lelite I made the same parallel back a while ago. I think I've detested few things as much as AI. Good grief, this is so annoying! I understand that showing sold-out dolls can get people interested in future things, but give me a filter please!
I think I have a lot of turnoffs, but many of them are related to dolls I don't really collect (like unrealistically MASSIVE and PERKY breasts on female dolls) but the one thing that makes me the most upset is a beautiful lithe boy body..... but then he has a pack of hawaiian rolls on his abdomen
