- Really crappy joints that don't hold poses whatsoever. I think Sugarble is the only one I can think of off the top of my head. Angel Fantasy too, I guess. Sometimes this is something that you have to handle the doll to figure out, but other times you get a feel for how they look. Some people can make these dolls work, but if I have to wire it to get it to hold a single non-straight pose, then it's not for me. - Lots of veins. This is pretty much exclusive to male bodies, and I know it's technically realistic, but on a solid resin doll it just looks gross to me. - Overly sexualized dolls, of any gender. Girls with giant boobs and massive hips and, er, very pleased expressions. Boys with come-hither faces and really detailed genitals. Tongues that are clearly meant for non-food purposes. No shade to anybody who likes these dolls, they're just not my thing. - Hands or feet that look like boat paddles. If I like the rest of the body enough, I'm willing to change those out, but boy do they bug me. Also, baby hands!! On a childlike YoSD, it's obviously fine, but on any larger size it drives me nuts!
Sculpts with the vacuum-sealed muscle look. Eight pack abs, funky adhesions over the scapulae, layer upon layer of serratus. Give that lad a Gatorade he looks /dehydrated/. Hands that are too large, and their compounding error, arms that are too short.
Oh my gosh I havn't laughed that hard in a long time I agree though, thats literally the only thing I dislike about ResinSoul male bodies is that they're super unnessicerly chisled...especially when the girls look just normal like please >>;;
I don't care for extra-large breasts on adult dolls. Probably because I have extra-large breasts and know what a pain they are. XD The equivalent of a D-cup looks nice, but once it starts looking out of proportion too much, I just wince in sympathy. I love looking at horror dolls, but I don't want one myself. I like for my dolls to be friendly and cute. ^.^ I also don't care for "sexy" outfits on a child doll. It creeps me out. No sexualizing the dolly babies, kthx.
I'm the same way. I enjoy looking at other people's scarred and otherwise horrific looking dolls but I like the pretty ones. I like looking at other people's goth dolls, but would probably never make one of mine up that way. There is a doll from Doll Chateau (I think) that looks normal except for a skeletal arm coming out of her back that I find especially interesting possibly because she looks normal otherwise. If I would own a horror doll it would be that one. I have thought of owning a vampire sculpt but I would want a normal version head also since, in most of the vampire fantasies I read, the character's teeth come down and go back up.
Skinny dolls, tan skin (it just doesn't look natural, especially on caucasian sculpts), large breasts, overly wide hips, super defined abs, teeny tiny genitals on male dolls. If your gonna sculpt them, at least make them worth having!
Teeeettthhh! Any open mouth sculpts just irk me for some reason. There are very few cute sculpts with teeth that I can tolerate but I'm not a fan of open mouthes in general.
Dolls without double knee joints. Especially on SD they sometimes lack leg mobility and it's a deal breaker for me. facial expressions. I don't know why but they annoy me, they just look unnatural. I don't want a constantly screaming or winking doll weird child like bodies with thick thighs. I love my harucasting girls because they are MSD and proportioned to look like a 22 year old. But kid bodies with big thighs look so weird. extremely big boobs or extremely defined abs pure white skin dolls
I stumbled on this thread today. Funny, 9 years later and folks are still keeping the discussion going. Sorry, I did not have time to read all 42 pages though... For me I don't like the macabre. There are dolls with parts missing (designed that way), injuries, and stuff. Not dissing anyone's style, but to me a BJD is a work of Art and I prefer the pretty and happy look. There's enough ugly in this world that a small cute BJD brings a smile to my face.
pretty much that i deeply dislike ass boobs, other stuff that i dont like anything that has disproportions
I don't like sculpts that have sunken cheeks and Pinocchio noses. I don't remember what brand it was, but I saw a sculpt like that once and it just gave me the heebie jeebies. I also don't like thin, lanky, almost skeletal bodies. My dolls need some meat on their bones.
That sounds like you might be describing Doll Chateau's Snowborn maybe? To keep on-topic: I'm not sure if I've posted this before or not, but—eyes that take up a lot of the face. I used to have a phobia of being stared at, and large, wide-eyed dolls tend to bring back unpleasant memories from that time. I also find it unappealing when other facial features (mouth, nose, overall shape of the face) are smaller by comparison to the eyes. I strangely enjoy anime despite this, but anime characters aren't always going to be facing at me, vacantly staring at me. I much prefer all the facial features to be in proportion—and smaller eyes don't give me this whole dead-eyed stare.
Those sculpts with boobs that have NO weight to them, kinda like they are just....full of silicone and floating in space. Never found a big chested sculpt I really like besides Viola! (Doll nudity warning for Violas link!) Also, I despise straight legs! I like the curves of legs on a sculpt, it makes it look more graceful and delicate to me.
Ah yes, OK, I've got a few Dollmore kid dolls, i do love them, but I don't like their arms. Why, I don't know, they seem too big in the elbow?? So much about them is adorable though. But when I fell in love with the mature fashion dolls, many years ago, I just couldn't get past those elbows or their big boobs - but that's a common issue, LOL (I suffered from big boobs until I had them removed) So.... until I realized that I could put a fashion doll head on a different MSD body because someone had done that, I kept looking but not buying any fashion dolls (16") Now I have two heads on the way, and I have 2 sets of bodies (ones I really hope will work and another set I'm pretty sure will work) But now that I broke down, I'm actually considering giving the original bodies a go, if I order more of these dolls. We'll see I really like the boys as they are and hope to get some of them soon. Also, I'm into realistic sculpts or cute, but super anime doesn't work for me. I do like FL dolls, they're super cute, but Volks are not my thing unfortunately.
I have a new one: less stylized supermodel-thin dolls. Popovy Sisters, Pasha Pasha, Stacya Dolls, etc. Seems to happen most with Eastern European artists. Some of them have pretty faces, but it’s just not enough to get me past those bony bodies. And if the faces are also very thin/angular, they look like zombies. Huge boobs used to be my biggest turn-off, but I’d take anime flotation devices over 0% body fat any day.
I'm mostly interested in MSD males so for me, it would probably have to be when you can see the rib cage on the body. That's just too thin for my tastes.
I hear you on this--I used to own dc y-06 which was a body based off that aesthetic, but having lost an unsafe amount of weight being sick, I see them now and I'm like, someone get that doll my meds asap. I've come around to liking the sculpting on some of the larger chests when it's a little more realistic--like I bet the twigling D bust looks great dressed, but it looks pretty good as it is too, and I love their larger proportions, even if their hips have destroyed 3 sets of pants...
omg I just got back into the hobby and there are moooore - Those wiggly eyebrow minifee faceups that give the perpetual look of having just walked in on your grandma using the bathroom - Megamind heads like from Migidoll. I have a smaller forehead myself so large foreheads look incredibly strange - Round youthful faces on long thin bodies, like OK I get that's an Asian ideal and some people are thin with round faces, but with the dolls it's taken to comical heights. - All the ultra stylized kpop male faces. Even when I liked kpop I was most into the guys who looked real and unique. - "fat cheek baby lips" where like... the weight of your cheeks pulls down the corners of the mouth into a frown or pout.
Incredibly disproportionate bodies!! Especially with the really long, thin arms and skeletal torsos and hips. I want a nice human, not a wendigo...
For me a big turn off is how the pieces are cut. Especially in the torso area. It’s a “no” from me if it’s just a straight cut around the area that makes the joint. I like it when they are cut to the form of the body. It’s more natural and looks pleasing when the doll has no clothes on.
This thread makes me so happy.... Missile silo boobs. Can't stand'em. Teeth. No. Just... no. No regular teeth, no vampire teeth. No teeth!!! Tongues freak me out. Anime faces/eyes. Childlike and baby dolls. I was never into babies or little kids. I need at least a teenager. SD dolls intimidate me. So big! SO BIG. Boys. Sorry. I just don't want any male dolls. On the other hand, I have developed a new obsession with the super slim, stylized fashion female bodies, so everyone here who hates them as too skinny, or with ribs poking out, can send them to meeeeee...
As many others have said... big ridiculously unrealistic boobs. I don't always mind if the boobs just have that "invisible push up bra" thing, since it's hard resin and it's not like you can just put your doll in a push up bra and expect their boobs to look different. But that depends on the doll for me, and the character I have in mind for the doll, since if a doll is obviously not wearing a bra, or just going nude, then a push up bra look is a weird choice. I'm also just straight up not into anime faces, as I'm not a fan of how they look in real life, compared to on a screen or other 2D format. Maybe if my collection had started with anime faces I would have stuck with that, but I just prefer more realistic faces (altho I like my faces kind of alien anyway, so not too realistic, lol). There's a few doll companies I completely avoid because their style of doll is just alarming and disturbing to me, but I'll avoid naming them to avoid offending anyone. But they remind me of really disturbingly thin super models and look like they'd trigger someone who has an eating disorder. I'm just solidly not a fan--no offense if someone likes those dolls, they're just not for me. In general, I also haven't been a fan of open mouths, especially the "porno face" dolls, but sometimes I'll avoid getting a sculpt just because of a light tooth-showing smile or gap in their lips. Not sure why, but I just prefer my dolls have completely closed mouths. I'm not even a big fan of the tiny fangs some dolls have. Not sure why, but eh, means I'm not competing with others for those dolls I guess. And as others have said, I'm staying to the sizes I like, so no SD sizes since they're just too big for me.
I don’t like dolls with a very distinct expressing. Unless it has another normal head to be swapped off. It’s just how I feel. Just out of preference a doll that smiles really hard like : D I couldn’t ever own unless it had a resting face. Like a normal face.
No tan option at all. Or only tan resins during events. SOULDOLL. Love the sculpts but tan resin is somehow exclusive. This isn't a turn off, but I wish there were more 50cm dolls. I also hate when the female body is feminine and cute, but then the male version just looks the same with a flat chest. Round or fuller hips on msd boys bother me sooooo muuuuuccchhhh! I'm not saying they have to be ripped, but at least match the teenager or adult look that the ladies have.
- Massive breasts that seem to defy gravity - Joints with mismatched colours - Sexual expressions - Baby cheeks on a mature proportions doll - Strong expressions, unless the doll is cartoony - Sausage fingers - Skin that looks see through
There are several things that make me flip flop on whether I would want a doll or not. As several have mentioned above, chests that are too large and wide necks are my biggest turn off. I also don’t like it when their hips or thighs are too narrow/straight. I like some curviness to the body. As for the heads, I don’t like dolls with really pointy noses from the side (they look small and round from the front but are unnaturally long from the side). I have a big nose myself so I don’t have anything against them. But some dolls look like Phineas from P&F from the side… it doesn’t match the rest of the sculpt
I must profess that I just can't get into anime style faces - the great big eyes, tiny mouths, and miniscule to non-existent noses. Everything else I've been slowly changing my mind about. But anime remains a hard dislike. Which sucks, because I'd really love to own a Volks or a Smart Doll (I know, not on topic, but same idea). I love the vinyl bodies, the amazing history, the excellent quality - but every time my finger hovers over that buy button - those faces. They stop me every time. Urgh.
Honestly, I don't like super realistic dolls much- I think they're harder to work with and I have trouble with eye contact which they fit right into brainwise ^^;; or sculpts that are pretty sexualized.
I do vinyl/resin hybrids all the time! Zaoll heads actually fit on the neck mechanisms of DD bodies!)
this or I was thinking look into doing a custom on a volks 2B or 9S - you can get a lot closer to an SD style look (also Dolfie Icon but harder to get) in terms of my personal turn offs, I don’t like “romantic glance” style eyes and sculpts that are super realistic - also not a big fan of exaggerated busts like others haha
Yes! I mean, I don’t mind a nice rack (I have one of those myself, thank you) but p-l-e-a-s-e give them a realistic looking curve/angle for goodness sake!
Wait wait, hear me out! What if, they are like that Austin Power wife that has machine guns as her breasts. I'll see myself out, thank you
They would be the most magnificent breasts ever sculpted. That would be awesome! (But do they qualify as breasts? XD) I am not a fan of the overly sexual dolls, the anime faces, the super realistic ones, the childish ones, the unrealistically super slim model-like bodies, the fantasy ones, the super big boobs, the unrealistic booty, etc...yeah my collection is pretty basic with one specific aesthetic and I like it that way. XD I can look and appreciate the aforementioned dolls in other people's collections, but not in mine.
Generic bland model faces. Idk how to describe it. I don't mind neutral expressions of the 'simmering pout' but if any and all character comes from just the faceup or clothes I tend to pass. Size. I prefer 60cm+ I've made acceptations lately because I've found some 40-45cm dolls. I tried a super tiny doll. But I tended up painting it then selling it with the new face for profit because I just did NOT vibe with it. So if I see cute tinys I just pass and choose to look at the ones others own.
I have two. First really ripped dudes. They just look so awkward and stiff. Secondly big round eyes. Idk what it is about them I can love everything about the doll but if the eyes are to round it ruins the whole thing.
I really want a more natural adult female body… I ordered the xagadoll 30cm body because i thought it was really cute and chubby. But its really small and babyish. Most female bodies are very thin and young-looking, I just want a mature female body with belly fat and butt dimples!!!! Having realistic boobs with natural weight is a plus! Most bjd big boobs look like inflatable beach balls squished together
Teeth. Teeth. Teeth. Teeth. It just... weird. Im not used to seeing dolls smile and show teeth (except for barbie's one-strip teeth)
Biggest turn off: jointed hands. I cannot stand them at all and they totally creep me out! ...and adding on: knee joints. I don't mind if they're single jointed as long as they're pretty. Actually, just give me single jointed, I prefer it! No knee beans please! I find it funny to see how divisive teeth are! I used to hate them too but now I seek them out. My apologies to any of you teeth haters who see my collection.
Too many overly detailed sculpted veins on bodies. I don't know why but it's a big No for me when looking for a new body. And super pointy anime noses.
From reading this thread it seems like there'd be room for an enterprising sculptor to start offering alternate bust pieces... not just the usual big/small/etc. but supported/unsupported. Y'know... like ordering heel feet. Just a thought.
This! I do prefer a double jointed knee for the posability. However I dislike it if the leg is uniform when straight and bends to reveals a plain knee bean. I love joints where the knee cap is sculpted as the knee bean. My other turn off is unproportional heads. If the head is wider than the doll's hips/butt it's a no from me. I still do find many big headed dolls beautiful, but they're just not what I would add to my own collection.
I never thought hard about turn offs but I think the biggest one is weird side profiles. Dollzone has had this problem for me often where a doll looks so good from the front view but the side profile is just kinda wonky. Unless the intention is a very unique face (like a long nose) sometimes it just doesn't look right.
Hoo boy! We gonna fight! (Not really.) I'm 100% the opposite. I love the hidden beans. Hello, fellow Blythe hater? Same. It's why I keep rebodying a bunch of playline dolls - BIG HEADS, tiny bodies. Drives me crazy!
It's probably repeating what others have said like 50 times but - large boobs, or super push up boobs - I fall in love with most aspects of a doll, but then come across pictures of it nude and can't stand the body anymore. Super muscles or just being large in one area - like super thick thighs but everything else is supermodel thin. Large eyes - to an extent they can be cute, but after a point I just find them creepy. Sexual expressions, teeth, or tongues on dolls - they weird me out. Long necks - I can't think of examples right now, but I've come across a handful of dolls with necks that are 2-3x longer than most dolls. Kid faces/heads on a body that's clearly not a child body, and kid dolls being made to dress like supermodels or put into inappropriate positions/situations - that could be the mom in me coming out, but that stuff just grosses me out
I feel like I have a lot, but here are the main ones: Like you said, boobs that are too big, round, pushed together, and gravity defying. They just looks so weird and unnatural that it grosses me out and makes me uncomfortable. Big boobs that look normal (not too close together, not too round, and abide by the laws of gravity) don't bother me though. Necks on male dolls that are too wide and/or muscular. They make the head look too small. I especially hate this when the face sculpt is a softer one. Male dolls where the shoulders are too wide. I think it just looks bad. To the previous point, shoulders that are too straight across and don't slope downward. It just feels so straight and unnatural, I want to give them a shoulder massage to help them loosen up. Male bodies that are overly muscular. I just think they look gross and they make me uncomfortable. Once again on male bodies, but when the pecs or abs are too flat. They don't look realistic and 3D like how real muscles are, instead they looks carved into a flat surface and it just doesn't look good imo. Chubby baby sculpts. I don't know why, but they make me uncomfortable, especially the short, fat sausage fingers and chubby cheeks. Similar to the last point, face sculpts in general that have chubby cheeks. I don't know why, I just don't like it. Childlike faces on muscular or mature bodies. It makes me uncomfortable. Dolls with long noses. Not big noses, but rather extended noses. Just not a fan of the look. Centaur dolls. I just don't like them. Fantasy dolls that are mostly human but have fantasy legs or hands. I just don't like them. I'm not really sure how to describe this one, but bodies that lack detail. Like they're the correct proportions and all that, but they're kind of just the shapes as smooth resin and don't show any muscle, bone, or body fat. I'm sure there are many more I could list, as I'm quite picky, but I'll leave it at that.
Heads... open mouth, especially mouths with teeth and/or tongue showing. This is pretty much an instant dealbreaker for me. I prefer a doll face to have a neutral or "universal" expression... an open mouth is not a neutral expression and I find it extremely unattractive for a doll (and a human too, for that matter) to be going around with permanently parted lips. Female bodies... big boobs, as mentioned. I always prefer a small-breasted female. (It kinda reflects my IRL preferences, tbh. ) Male bodies... musclebound beefcakes, whether it's the whole body or overly cut six-packs. I like a skinny, lean male. (Also reflects my IRL preferences, lol. Yes, I like slim bodies...) ETA - I thought of one more. Interchangeable man parts are freakin weird to me. Just... no. I don't even want to own a male body that has this mechanism, he needs to keep his junk permanently on where it belongs, kthx. And lastly.... Jointed hands. Oh dear. For some reason I find them a massive visual distraction. Every time I look at a photo of a doll with jointed hands, I end up fixating on the hands so much that I can't focus on or think about anything else in the photo. I don't know why this happens, but I suspect the sheer amount of jointing in a small body part screams "this is a doll, 100% not human" and thoroughly breaks the illusion of realism in my eyes -- and I can't look away from it. Whereas a doll with solid hands, but can't quite hold a prop realistically, can still maintain that illusion - because their hands look humanlike I don't notice that they aren't holding a prop well. I actually wish this wasn't such a turnoff. I've never owned jointed hands, but maybe if I got a pair for one of my dolls, that might change everything? I'm torn between wanting a pair and wary of being disgusted by them.
Like many others have said, unnatural looking breasts. Another one is closed eyes. Don't get me wrong, I think many of the sculpts are beautiful but for myself I'd prefer open eyes.
Weird mid torso joints that also hinder movement Unusually small/large head for scale (and can't find suitable body in another scale) Tiny upper torso with massive hips and thighs; I'm more annoyed at how popular this shape is than me genuinely disliking it Weird breasts Teeth None of the above are exact dealbreakers; I really like some dolls despite them having some of the above, but I find myself eschewing certain dolls and companies due to these. Overly detailed genitals is also one, but that's a pretty easy fix.
I'm pretty sure these two are ones I haven't listed previously: • Legs without a mobility joint, especially ones that are impossible to get into a sitting position. They have a lack of mobility during posing, which I find to be especially frustrating. • Ken doll nether regions, especially on the guys. It makes me think they were subjected to involuntary surgery. In general I'm not a fan of undeveloped/unrealistic nethers, but can be lenient on details to some degree. That last one in particular is one of the main reasons I lost interest in fashion dolls and decided to get into bjds instead
Eye openings that are too large or far apart and start edging towards the temples! Can’t stand this on playline Rainbow High, can’t stand it on BJDs either. It doesn’t look good, even on stylized sculpts, and there are plenty of sculpts with big cartoony eyes that can place them so they aren’t threatening to fly off the face
Male doll bodies that are super ripped like they're in a marvel movie and have been purposefully dehydrating themselves to get max muscle definition, especially for smaller dolls and ones with softer features. It's just not natural looking or aesthetically nice to look at, and with softer featured faces it makes no sense to me. Weirdly babyfaced "mature" dolls. I know that some actual people are baby faced, but there's a difference between baby faced and that is a CHILD and i feel like they fall into the latter more often than not. And are usually paired with the weirdly muscular bodies too which makes it all the more jarring. Sculpted veins also weird me out and I won't buy a doll/ body if they have them or if they're heavily detailed. They just look weird to me
I suppose at the end of the day these annoyances are all relative and down to personal taste. As I’m artistic with my strong points being in drawing animals and people that’ll be where my deal-breaker irritations come from. Ugh, big bulbous Balloon Breasts! I hate them with a passion! Hated seeing them in comic books/graphic novels, hate them on figurines and dolls too. They’re so unnatural looking and tacky! I’ve lost count of the number of dolls I’ve rapidly lost interest in buying, especially second hand, when I’ve seen that they have a large ‘glamour’ bust. Another annoyance for me is sharp pointy or ‘westernised’ noses on soft featured or ethnic featured dolls. It ruins the beauty of the sculpt. I find it particularly annoying on Asian featured dolls, even Iplehouse are incredibly guilty of this. If you’re going to try to celebrate the diversity of human features then stop with the ski-slope noses! My final annoyance is animal legs/feet/claws that sit very unrealistically. I especially dislike paws that just stick up in the air when the doll is lying down or in a stretch pose, paws that may have an ankle joint but zero range of motion so it’s as if there were no joint at all. It’s not actually that hard to design simple practical joints that can make a world of difference to posing. I’ve done it, I drew out designs for kitty paws and a griffon with movable hawk feet (and beak) that Daisydayes used years ago. I’m no dollmaker or engineer yet I could figure it out, so what’s their excuse especially when you can see so much time and work has gone into the rest of the design. :/
Hi You are not alone ! I really dislike big boobs on dolls specially if they have a childlike face! Plus is harder for clothes to fit. I also dont like those really anorexic dolls ( I admire the art ) but I dont find them beautiful.
I actually looove sleeping dolls and I wish I had more than just one lol. That being said, I also prefer natural-looking breasts; the smaller, the better, in fact. And just not shaped like they were squeezed inside an invisible bra. Also, when there's too much legginess and not sufficiently long torso. If I want long legs on dolls, I just get them high heels... Bobble-headed dolls that aim to appear realistic. I mean, to me, a heavily stylised doll with a large head is nothing but cute and loveable. Yet a realistic head on an overly small body just looks weird to me... Like a ventriloquist's dummy with face features that are overt on purpose.
Pouty/sad/scowling faces. Sleeping faces. They can be quite beautiful, but there's only so much you can do with them. Bulging hand veins. Exaggerated body parts. It looks weird and makes it nearly impossible to find clothes that will fit the doll. You're forced to either make the clothes yourself (not possible if you're like me and couldn't sew a button on a shirt) or spend $80+ on "official" outfits from the company. Yes, you can go on eBay and Etsy, but if the model isn't popular, good luck.
i am a huge hater of dolls that have childish faces but completely mature bodies. like dude-they-bro no. i don’t know man. like just give them child bodies! they don’t need big boobs!
Alien proportioned faces. There is a lot of sculpts that I like, but when I look at them next to a photo of more realistic dolls that I own, it looks uncanny valley and alien-like A lot of older Minifees fall into this category, even though I find them pretty and appreciate looking at them in photos. And also eyes that are very small, like on a realistic human face. And extremely slim fashion dolls, because they remind me of skeletons. I'm always looking for a middle ground between realistic and doll-like, so any extreme into any direction is a turn-off.
I actually love female dolls with larger chest options like Luts. But you made some fair points. :> I've got a list of things I try to avoid but not all of them are deal breakers. If I like the sculpt enough and the problem is small, I'll still get the doll. But I digress, probably my biggest turn off is dolls with big open mouthed smiles. A good example of this would be AoD sculpts like Mu Yanzi and Hui Xiang. They just kind of creep me out. I don't mind a doll showing teeth but the huge "teeth baring" grins are a little unnerving for me.
